Shownotes

Silence is costing men more than we admit.

In this solo episode of The Lonely Chapter, Sam reflects on co-hosting an International Men’s Day event at London Fire Brigade headquarters and the honest conversations it opened around men’s mental health, suicide, loneliness, identity and physical wellbeing.

Drawing on his experience in the fire service and previous volunteering with Samaritans, Sam explores why so many men struggle to speak openly about what they are carrying, and why conversations often begin only when someone reaches crisis point.

This episode looks at low testosterone, gambling addiction, prostate cancer, shift work, sleep loss and the strain emergency service careers can place on mental and physical health. It also considers how isolation, identity and cultural expectations can make it harder for men to ask for help.

More importantly, this is a conversation about what can actually change: checking in properly, building stronger connections, paying attention to physical warning signs and creating spaces where men can speak honestly without feeling judged.
