Why do so many adult children of dysfunctional families struggle with anxiety, people-pleasing, overthinking, and feeling like they can never truly relax?
In this episode of Tammy's Takes, trauma coach Tammy Vincent explores one of the most powerful lessons from her conversation with Holly Haag: healing begins the day you become your own safe person.
Growing up in dysfunction teaches us to survive by reading the room, keeping everyone else happy, and ignoring our own needs. Those survival strategies may have protected us as children, but they often leave us feeling stuck, overwhelmed, and disconnected as adults.
Tammy explains why your nervous system continues to react long after childhood is over, shares a simple exercise you can begin using today, and offers practical steps to start rebuilding self-trust from the inside out.
If you've ever wondered why you struggle with boundaries, anxiety, or constantly feel responsible for everyone else's emotions, this episode will help you understand why—and show you where healing begins.

Hello everybody, and welcome back
to another episode of Tammy's
2
:Takes, where we take powerful
conversations with our guests and
3
:turn them into practical strategies
you can use right here, right now.
4
:So first of all, I wanna talk a
little bit about Tammy's Takes,
5
:because a lot of people are like,
"What the hell is Tammy's Takes?"
6
:Every time I have a guest on, I lay
in bed at night and I think about
7
:our conversation, and things just
come through my head, and I'm always
8
:constantly thinking thinking, thinking.
9
:And what I realized is those thinking
things that I'm thinking about are things
10
:that I wanna teach you guys, are things
that I wanna put into simple strategy,
11
:simple techniques, simple things that
you can do on a daily basis to make your
12
:life a little easier, a little simpler,
and maybe move forward in this whole
13
:healing game a little quicker, right?
14
:So that's what Tammy Takes
it- Tammy's Takes is.
15
:And I think there's about 40 of them
now at this point, and you can literally
16
:go back and binge watch all 40 of them.
17
:They're only five to seven minutes.
18
:They're real quick, but it's just
something that I wanna teach real quick
19
:from the episode that happened before.
20
:Today's episode actually comes
from the conversation that I
21
:had yesterday with Holly Hague.
22
:And if you did not listen to the
conversation yet, I encourage
23
:you go back and listen to it.
24
:Holly shared an incredible story of
surviving childhood abuse, living with
25
:autoimmune disease, and ultimately
rebuilding her health by healing
26
:both emotionally and physically.
27
:But there was one sentence that
she said that I haven't been
28
:able to stop thinking about.
29
:She said, "I had to become
my own safe person."
30
:And I thought, "Oh my gosh, that
might be one of the most important
31
:lessons that any adult child of
dysfunction will ever learn."
32
:'Cause here's what no one tells us.
33
:The reason that you struggle with
anxiety, the reason you overthink
34
:everything, the reason that you have
a hard time setting boundaries, the
35
:reasons you say yes when you wanna say
no, the reason you feel responsible
36
:for everybody else's situations is
because your nervous system is still
37
:waiting for someone to tell you that
it's safe, that it's safe to just exist.
38
:Most people think people are looking for
confidence or motivation or happiness,
39
:but really what we're looking for is
just simply one word, and that is safety.
40
:Think about your h-
childhood for just a minute.
41
:Just a minute.
42
:Who was your safe person?
43
:Was it your mom, your dad, your
grandma, your grandpa, your
44
:aunt, your uncle, a teacher?
45
:Who was it?
46
:Maybe you never had one.
47
:But if you're anything with like the
clients that I work with, it doesn't
48
:matter you- you can find one, right?
49
:And if you can't find one, maybe you just
have to be that safe person for yourself.
50
:Because honestly, maybe a lot of times,
and this happened in my case, the people
51
:that were supposed to protect me and
the people that were supposed to be
52
:the, the safest in my world were the
people that I needed protection from.
53
:And I look at my dad, like my dad was not
abusive in any stretch of the imagination,
54
:but he was emotionally unavailable,
so he still wasn't my safe person.
55
:Sometimes you're struggling with things.
56
:You're growing up with addiction.
57
:You grew up with parents that struggled
with mental illness or depression It's
58
:not your fault, and sometimes your
parents or your caregivers or the people
59
:that were supposed to keep you safe
were so i- wrapped up in their own pain
60
:that there simply wasn't room for you.
61
:So your nervous system adapted.
62
:It did what it had to do.
63
:It survived.
64
:It became brilliant at surviving.
65
:It learned a couple things, though,
and a couple things, if these
66
:resonate with you, let me know.
67
:How many times have you thought to
yourself, or how many times have you
68
:say it to yourself, "If I can just make
everyone happy, things will be good.
69
:If I don't make anyone
mad, things will be safe.
70
:If I read the room before I walk
into it, no danger can come to me"?
71
:What about when they asked you who you
are and you say, "I can become whoever
72
:you need me to be," because it feels safe?
73
:How many times have you told yourself
or thought to yourself or even put
74
:yourself in a situation and you
thought, "That might make me feel safe"?
75
:The problem is your nervous system
has not gotten the message yet
76
:that you're not seven anymore.
77
:You're not five, you're not three,
you're not two, you're not all of
78
:those ages at which you learn these
adaptive skills of staying safe.
79
:So it still feels as if there's
danger around every corner.
80
:That's why healing isn't about
just changing your thoughts.
81
:Healing is teaching your body a
new, safe experience, a brand-new
82
:experience some of you may never
have even thought about experiencing.
83
:One where … And I guess the easiest
way to put it is you need an experience
84
:where you become the safe adult your
younger self needed and never had.
85
:I tell my clients all the time:
healing begins the day you stop
86
:asking, "Who's going to rescue me?
87
:Who's going to save me?"
88
:Start asking, "How can I
show up for myself today?
89
:How can I not abandon myself today?"
90
:Because every single time that you do
that, every single time, whether it's
91
:setting a boundary, whether it's saying
no without guilt, whether it's nourishing
92
:your foo- yourself with proper food,
nutrition, exercise, whatever it is.
93
:Even the times that you have that little
critic sitting on your shoulder and you
94
:decide to, instead of entertaining their
thoughts, just speak kindly to yourself.
95
:How about every time you
just apologize for existing?
96
:These are the things that we
do, and it's because our nervous
97
:system doesn't feel safe.
98
:But every time you change and every
time you stop abandoning yourself in
99
:those situations and you help yourself,
you're sending one very powerful message
100
:to your nervous system, my friends.
101
:You're saying, "I got you.
102
:I'm not going anywhere.
103
:I'll protect you now.
104
:I know the things that happened to you
weren't your fault, but I'm here now."
105
:And let's go.
106
:That's really what you're telling it.
107
:That is how you build trust with yourself.
108
:Not overnight, not one decision.
109
:This is gonna take time, guys.
110
:This is gonna take time, but
it's one safe choice at a time.
111
:So today, you know I give exercises.
112
:Everything's all about an exercise, and
I'm gonna give you something to do today.
113
:The next time you feel overwhelmed, do not
immediately jump in to how you can fix it.
114
:Just pause, put your hand on
your heart Take a deep breath
115
:and ask yourself three questions.
116
:First, one, what am I feeling?
117
:Not what am I thinking,
but what am I feeling?
118
:What am I actually feeling in my body?
119
:Two, what do I need right now?
120
:What do I need?
121
:What do I need that's gonna
make me even just 1% better?
122
:Maybe it's a glass of water.
123
:Maybe it's going for a walk.
124
:Maybe it's phoning a friend.
125
:Maybe it's letting yourself
cry or beat up your pillow.
126
:Whatever it is, just do it.
127
:Ask yourself, "What do I need?"
128
:And then honor the answer that you get.
129
:And number three, ask yourself, "If the
wounded little child version of myself…"
130
:And it doesn't matter whether they're
two, three, four, five, six, seven,
131
:eight, whatever they are, "If they
were standing right in front of me at
132
:this moment, what would I say to them?"
133
:Because I guarantee you wouldn't
tell them that they were stupid.
134
:You wouldn't tell them to get over it.
135
:Of course not.
136
:You wouldn't do that.
137
:You have to start treating
yourself like your own best friend.
138
:So ask yourself, "What would I
say to my little self right now?"
139
:Think about that.
140
:What would you say?
141
:You're gonna say, "It's
okay, baby, I got you.
142
:We're safe.
143
:We're here.
144
:You don't have to do this alone anymore."
145
:So here is the important part, though.
146
:Say those exact words.
147
:Say them to yourself.
148
:Feel them.
149
:Feel that love, because your nervous
system doesn't know whether the words
150
:are coming from a place of forced…
151
:It doesn't know if it's coming from a
place of your seven-year-old self, or
152
:it doesn't know if it's coming from you.
153
:It only knows one thing, and it
knows that the message feels safe,
154
:and that is what we're trying to do.
155
:We're trying to get a safe
message out there to your
156
:body, to your nervous system.
157
:So when Holly was talking, one of the
things that I absolutely loved that she
158
:said, and it again reiterates everything
I'm always trying to say here, is that
159
:healing doesn't happen in one moment.
160
:It doesn't happen in one choice.
161
:It doesn't happen at…
162
:There's no one big aha, hit
in the head with a two-by-four
163
:transformation when it's healing.
164
:It is literally about making
small, tiny choices over and over
165
:again, and I agree 100% with that.
166
:You probably, if you've listened
to any of my other episodes,
167
:you know that I say this a lot.
168
:Healing isn't a breakthrough.
169
:It's a thousand tiny moments where
you choose yourself over abandoning
170
:yourself, or you choose yourself
over those survival patterns that
171
:you have so beautifully adapted, but
we need to work on getting rid of.
172
:So it's a deep breath.
173
:It's setting a boundary.
174
:It's a healthy meal.
175
:It's just being kind to yourself.
176
:It's going for a walk.
177
:These are the moments that are
going to start telling your
178
:nervous system that you are safe.
179
:You just need a moment, a no-
a moment where your body says,
180
:"I am worth taking care of.
181
:I'm worth it."
182
:And you know I'll tell you
all day long you're worth it,
183
:but you have to believe it.
184
:You have to truly believe it in your heart
or you are not going to act like you are.
185
:So If you're thinking about
that, and you're thinking,
186
:"Oh my God, that is so me.
187
:I say these things to myself all the
time, and I'm constantly abandoning
188
:myself," I'm glad you're here,
because you're in the right place.
189
:Because awareness is where healing begins.
190
:Awareness is the first step.
191
:So if you're saying, "Oh
my goodness, what do I do?"
192
:you need a road map.
193
:You need a road map, right?
194
:It's not an A to Z plan, but
it helps to have a road map.
195
:That's exactly why I
created a course I have.
196
:It's called Trials to Triumph.
197
:It's an adult child's beginning
road map to your healing journey.
198
:So I created literally specifically
for people who are just starting to
199
:see, "Oh my gosh, my dysfunctional
childhood did have a big impact on me.
200
:It did change the way I look at the world.
201
:It did change the way I'm showing up in
the world," and you wanna change, right?
202
:So it's not about fixing you,
because you're not broken,
203
:and I want you to hear that.
204
:I- it's not about fixing you.
205
:It's about helping you understand
why you became the way you became,
206
:and giving you practical tools
to get back to the were you…
207
:the you were before life lifed on you.
208
:So I want everybody to have
access to this program.
209
:I think it's incredibly valuable.
210
:It's an eight-week g- self-guided program.
211
:You go through it on your own rate time.
212
:You have constant access to me
to talk about, to ask questions,
213
:to get whatever you need.
214
:But right now I'd like to offer
it to you in the show notes
215
:at 90% off the normal price.
216
:So for just pennies, literally
pennies, you can begin on your healing
217
:journey, and you can start to get
some of those tools that might just
218
:jumpstart that journey for you.
219
:If you'd rather hit me up personally
and talk to me personally,
220
:I'm 100% cool with that, too.
221
:Schedule a call.
222
:It's a complimentary clarity
and call c- comm call.
223
:We just get on, we chat about whatever
you wanna know, and the next steps.
224
:Because, like I said, a little guidance,
a little help, a little road ma- map along
225
:the way will never hurt anybody, right?
226
:So it doesn't matter whether it's
working with me, taking the course,
227
:just staying on my podcast and
listening, looking up other podcasts,
228
:reaching out to other coaches.
229
:Whatever it is, just keep taking the
next step, because you so deserve it.
230
:Like I said, and I've mentioned 1,000
times, Holly talked about it again,
231
:healing doesn't happen all at once.
232
:It happens one safe choice at a time.
233
:So thank you so much for spending time
with me today, these three- few minutes.
234
:I know these Tammy Takes are very quick,
but if you get one thing from them, if you
235
:get one little thing, I've done my job.
236
:So if this episode spoke to you, please do
me a favor: share, subscribe, and pass it
237
:along to someone who might be struggling.
238
:Pass it along to someone who might
be interested in what we have to say.
239
:And until next time,
remember you are enough.
240
:You always have been.
241
:You are worthy of every good
thing that is coming your way.
242
:You all have a blessed and amazing
day, and I will see you back soon.
243
:Take care.
