Anna:

Welcome to another episode of AgTech Digest, your go-to source for the latest in agricultural technology. In today's episode, we're diving into the latest developments shaping the future of agriculture. We'll explore how capital, consolidation, and innovation are dividing the global crop sector in very different ways depending on which crop family you're in, examine a conversation on why the people who build greenhouses need to understand horticulture, and look at a major federal research award, a Canadian agri-food competition, and new autonomous farming software funding. We'll also cover a long-term greenhouse partnership in China, a regenerative agriculture data platform collaboration, a corporate acquisition in agri-food ventures, an ethanol facility expansion, a regional agtech hub expansion in Canada, and a vitamin B12 breakthrough in vertical farming. There's a lot to cover, so let's get started.

Anna:

Let's take a look at what this week brings us. The big theme is segmentation. The twenty twenty-five to twenty twenty-six agricultural technology landscape has moved away from being one unified market — it's now a collection of distinct crop sectors, each with its own capital dynamics, risk profile, and innovation pace. Where you sit in that landscape increasingly determines how much funding flows your way and what kind of future you're building toward.

Additionally, this week's interview features Rob Eddy of the Resource Innovation Institute, who is featured discussing a centralized certification program designed to address a critical gap: the people who design, build, and maintain greenhouse facilities often have no formal grounding in crop science or plant health. The program provides contractors, equipment vendors, and engineers with foundational horticulture education to ensure that facility construction actually aligns with what plants need to thrive. The curriculum went through a trial phase with design-build firm Arco Murray, with extensive feedback used to refine the coursework. Industry partners including Vertical Harvest also shaped the program, pushing food safety higher up the priority list. The course is hosted through the Ohio Controlled Environment Agricultural Center on The Ohio State University's learning platform — giving it both institutional credibility and accessible infrastructure.

Anna:

What's in the news for us? Well, North Dakota State University received a forty-five million dollar NSF award to expand its AgTech Engine, strengthening regional research infrastructure and early-stage agricultural innovation capacity. On the funding competition front, CAAIN launched a nine million dollar open competition to advance Canadian agri-food technology, targeting innovations that can scale within the domestic food system. Shifting to autonomous farming, Nature Robots secured four million euros in seed funding to scale its autonomous farming software platform, targeting precision field operations. In greenhouse infrastructure, Bom Group and HX Agriculture signed a long-term greenhouse partnership in China, combining horticultural expertise with regional market access to scale controlled environment production.

Anna:

Moving to energy and biofuels, Gevo announced plans for a second ethanol facility expansion at its North Dakota site, advancing its low-carbon fuel production capacity. In regional agtech development, La Zone Agtech welcomed Ferme O Menu and Fermes Borea to the MRC de L'Assomption cluster in Quebec, growing its network of agtech-focused agricultural enterprises. On the corporate side, DENSO acquired a stake in FoodVentures and made it a consolidated subsidiary, deepening its position in the agri-food technology space. In data and sustainability, CIBO Technologies partnered with Ingredion to scale its regenerative agriculture data platform, providing supply chain transparency and carbon measurement tools for agricultural sourcing. Turning to vertical farming innovation, LettUs Grow achieved vitamin B twelve-fortified pea shoots at commercial scale — a meaningful step in producing nutritionally enhanced crops through controlled environment systems. Finally to close our news, Casterra reported successful commercial castor field trials in Brazil, advancing its specialty oilseed program targeting industrial and sustainable bio-based applications.

Anna:

Looking ahead to upcoming industry events, mark your calendars for the Animal AgTech Innovation Summit from April 8th to 9th, 2026 in Fort Worth. Following that, Future Fit Asia 2026 runs from May 12th to 13th in Singapore, and Fiber Connect 2026 and Precision Agriculture takes place from May 17th to 20th in Orlando. Then we have Transform Food and Agriculture Europe from June 2nd to 3rd in Amsterdam. Finally, don't miss Greentech Amsterdam from June 9th to 11th in the Netherlands.

Anna:

That wraps up today's episode of AgTech Digest. We explored the latest developments in agricultural technology. From a segmenting global crop market where legumes are pulling $86 million average deal sizes and leafy greens are going through a shakeout, to Rob Eddy's case for horticulture education in the construction industry, a $45 million federal research award, DENSO's agri-food acquisition, LettUs Grow's vitamin B12 breakthrough, and CIBO Technologies partnering with Ingredion on regenerative agriculture data, it's clear that the agtech sector is making strides in sustainability and innovation. The market is maturing — and where capital flows next will depend on which crop families prove they can deliver at scale. Thanks for joining me, I'm Anna, signing off. Stay inspired and keep pushing the boundaries of what's possible!
