We are all perfectionists, who, failing perfection, have gone to the other extreme and settled for the bottle and a blackout. Perfectionism drives us blindly and we willfully demand that others supply us with more satisfactions or pleasures than are possible or due us. There comes a point in our insecurities, at which we depart from the degree of perfection that God wishes for us here on earth. Maybe it’s time to give ourselves and others a “break.” No one among us has been able to maintain anything like perfect adherence to these principles. We claim spiritual progress rather than spiritual perfection. Most alcoholics are bankrupt idealists. The real “ideal” is the perfection of God and we shall need to raise our eyes toward THAT perfection, and be ready to walk in THAT direction.
