Dr Emma Barrett is Research Fellow in Psychology at Lancaster University, a Chartered Psychologist and science writer. Her research interests include the psychology of exploration and adventure - why people choose to spend time in extreme and challenging environments, and how they survive and thrive in harsh conditions. Emma is passionate about making research accessible to a non-specialist readership, and is the co-author (with Paul Martin) of Extreme: Why some people thrive at the limits (Oxford University Press, 2014). She presents regularly to diverse audiences, and has talked about Extreme at NESTA's FutureFest, the Hay Festival, the Edinburgh International Science Festival, and Words by the Water. Emma is currently engaged in research collaborations with the Royal Geographical Society, Women's Adventure Expo, and Voluntary Service Overseas.
