"Importance of Good Photography in Design: As a designer, one of the hardest things is if I'm not working with good photography, especially your profile picture, the graphics could be gorgeous. I could lay everything out, everything looks great. And then when I drop your photo and it's not good, it destroys the whole thing."

Hey. Hey. We are here with
Speaker:the amazing, talented, wonderful Jen
Speaker:Fontania. And we are back with another
Speaker:episode, get Seen with Elani Wells to share with y'all why
Speaker:you want to be, need to be, should be at this year's holiday
Speaker:Entrepreneur Summit. Let's get seen. The Fourth annual
Speaker:Holiday Entrepreneur Summit. And I'm going to just toss it right over over to
Speaker:Jen and tell her to share a little bit about herself and what she
Speaker:does and what she's here to talk to us about today.
Speaker:Hey, Leilani. So wonderful to be here. I'm
Speaker:super excited because this is the fourth annual one. I can't believe where we
Speaker:started and how this started. And interestingly enough, I've been with you
Speaker:since the beginning when we created the graphics. And so even with my own
Speaker:journey with you, I've seen this evolution. And so the people that we help
Speaker:and serve and your clients and the people in the Get Seen community,
Speaker:it's all about how do you create the visual brilliance,
Speaker:how do you create great looking stuff that you put
Speaker:out there. Because it's all about branding. It's about your presence. It's how you
Speaker:show up and how people receive you. And more
Speaker:importantly, that's something we have to pay attention to because it
Speaker:affects if people want to work with you or even more importantly, give
Speaker:you money. Yeah, exactly.
Speaker:Massively important. Right. And a lot of times when we see
Speaker:people, we're looking at them and judging them based off
Speaker:of their visuals and we don't even know what's happening. They can know
Speaker:everything, say everything, do everything, but we don't believe it unless we see it. It's
Speaker:kind of like that hairstylist you go to see. And she's great, right?
Speaker:Everyone that has been with her since 1990
Speaker:or something knows that. Right. But she doesn't take the time to fix her own
Speaker:hair because she's pouring into somebody else all the time.
Speaker:At some point, she's going to need to say, hey, let me take care of
Speaker:me. And then the new business is going to say, oh, wait, look at her,
Speaker:she knows what she's doing because look at her hair. Right. And that's kind of
Speaker:how I see you and your understanding of graphics. And,
Speaker:I mean, your instagram alone says it all. You have
Speaker:the same thing that you share with other people. You're applying with your own visuals
Speaker:and I love to see it. Thank you. You're so right. You made a
Speaker:great point that we are so busy taking care of other people, our
Speaker:clients, the people that we serve, and yet
Speaker:it's that predicament of like, oh, my gosh, I need to work on my own
Speaker:stuff because if anybody's working with clients,
Speaker:you know how that goes. But it's important that we take care of our own
Speaker:stuff, too. It so is. So let's just jump into
Speaker:the next thing that I have to ask you so you all the time
Speaker:see people making mistakes with their graphics. And I didn't
Speaker:want to make this a how to, but I love hearing you talk about things,
Speaker:sometimes funny things that people tend to do. So just maybe just one thing. So
Speaker:maybe somebody that's listening is like, oops, I did that. I'm not going to do
Speaker:that anymore. Oh my gosh. Yeah. I have like two major ones in
Speaker:my brain, but the first one, I think that's super important is
Speaker:you have to have good photography, good
Speaker:pictures. I mean, it's that basic. And I'm not saying,
Speaker:okay, you have. To do a professional photo shoot. That would be
Speaker:best, that would be most ideal. But I get it. If you're
Speaker:starting out or you're on a budget and you can't do that, then
Speaker:I have some photos that came from my camera that somebody else took,
Speaker:or somebody else took it with their iPhone or whatnot. And I have an android.
Speaker:Both of us are team Android. Yes, we are. Well, they actually
Speaker:have the best, highest quality camera. It's not even like a talking point that I
Speaker:make. It's an actual fact. People look at.
Speaker:All the people making fun of us not having an iPhone. Okay, our camera beats
Speaker:you all. So with that said, even if you use a
Speaker:cell phone, take good pictures and make sure
Speaker:the lighting is good. As a designer, one of the hardest things
Speaker:is if I'm not working with good photography, especially your
Speaker:profile picture, the graphics could be gorgeous. I could lay everything
Speaker:out, everything looks great. And then when I drop your photo and it's not
Speaker:good, it destroys the whole thing. So I
Speaker:have to jump in here. Jen, because you and I work
Speaker:with these photos all the know. I
Speaker:know graphics. Not the way Jen knows, but I know graphics as well. So
Speaker:Jen and I kind of bounce back and forth with our graphics,
Speaker:and a lot of times it comes down to the photos
Speaker:itself. And you just wonder because you know that
Speaker:these entrepreneurs, you know them, so you know the high level, you know how
Speaker:well they're doing in business, all of these things. And yet when it comes
Speaker:time to speak, sometimes we have to go back to the drawing board because there's
Speaker:like limbs cut off, there's like head drops, there's like
Speaker:the lighting is bad, all these things. And at this
Speaker:point, yes, it's great to have professional photography, that's
Speaker:fine. But for those headshots, when people ask you to go speak and
Speaker:everything, you can just have a friend take it with your phone. And I find
Speaker:that multiple opinions are best, right? Go to all your business besties
Speaker:and be like, do you like this one, this one, this one, and have those
Speaker:photos ready. Because if you're that amazing, which you all
Speaker:are, then people are going to want to book you at some speaking
Speaker:engagement when it's an unexpected time, and you're going to need that headshot,
Speaker:right, to send off. And they're going to need to put it on a graphic,
Speaker:and they're going to need to not have, like, 40 million objects all
Speaker:around you. Arms cut off, heads cut off.
Speaker:You look into the side because you want to be cute, but you can't look
Speaker:straight on. You know what I mean?
Speaker:All this stuff. That's why you need to be at the summit, the holiday
Speaker:entrepreneur summit, because we're going to be talking about these things. Because I'm telling you,
Speaker:from behind the scenes, when I'm doing this stuff and I don't get a good
Speaker:photo, I'm like, it's so frustrating because I want everyone's
Speaker:graphics to look good, but I can't make your photo look good,
Speaker:because I can't take the time to make a head and an arm and a
Speaker:hand and your shoulder, especially shoulders when everything's so cropped. I
Speaker:cannot make the body parts. You know that. I
Speaker:would friend people on Facebook years ago just based off
Speaker:of their intentionality that I saw with their profile pick, because I
Speaker:was doing it at a fast pace, looking to really network quickly,
Speaker:and I wanted to get the friend first and then
Speaker:go back and network with them later, learn more about them later. Right. And I
Speaker:could tell so much that I needed to know just based off their profile
Speaker:pick. I mean, those people that would have their pick in the car with their
Speaker:seatbelt over them, I would skip that for sure. It's like there's no
Speaker:intention there. It's fine, you just put it in your
Speaker:feed as a fun little post, but things like that.
Speaker:So, yeah, it can mean the world of difference to
Speaker:who you have in your network at any given time. And it's really
Speaker:not something that you have to spend money on to take that. Just one
Speaker:quality pick or two quality picks, literally, with an
Speaker:upgraded cell phone. So it's wild. So I'm so
Speaker:excited that they get to hear from you and hear you talk about these things,
Speaker:Jen, because you know, me, I think you're amazing. I talk about you all the
Speaker:time. So share with
Speaker:everybody one last thing that you find is important, that you want
Speaker:them to know why they need to be at the summit, to know more and
Speaker:where they can find you in the interim. Yes,
Speaker:well, me, one of the things that I love doing is helping
Speaker:people stuff just look amazing online because all the things that you
Speaker:create from one space, it will transcend over
Speaker:what, all the different platforms onto your website, onto your marketing
Speaker:materials online, offline. And the thing that I always talk to
Speaker:Leilani about is that I make sure that we have a cohesive
Speaker:look, everything looks like it belongs to the same person. Everything looks
Speaker:like it belongs and it's in a set, it's cohesive. And that's one of
Speaker:my biggest pet peeves when I don't see the cohesiveness. So that's something super
Speaker:important. So you want to make sure you're at the summit,
Speaker:make sure you sign up. We're going to have amazing speakers. A lot of
Speaker:nuggets are going to be dropped. You're going to walk away with so much value,
Speaker:so much stuff. And this is perfect going into the new year,
Speaker:right? And if anybody wants to reach me, you can find me at
Speaker:jen. MoneyCoach. J-E-N-M-O-N-E-Y.
Speaker:Coach love it. Love it. Thanks for joining
Speaker:us. You want to hear more, you need to hear more.
Speaker:Go to this year's holiday entrepreneur summit. Get your
Speaker:tickets. We cannot wait to see you. We will see you there. Bye,
Speaker:everyone. Bye.
