Hey guys and dolls, this is Octavia Marie and this
2
:is the Culture Lit Podcast.
3
:I'm so excited to be back with you again
and moving past this hiatus finally.
4
:As you can see, I still have
some kinks to iron out, but I
5
:got this episode posted today.
6
:A win is a win.
7
:If you listened to the last couple
of episodes, then you know I
8
:gave you a little glimpse into
why it's been such a long time.
9
:Life threw me a curveball, but guess what?
10
:I'm a survivor.
11
:I am cancer free.
12
:I've had my final surgery at the end
of:
13
:my new normal, and all that entails.
14
:I'm not sure what my new normal
looks like long term, but for
15
:now, I'm just moving in ease.
16
:As I moved into the second quarter
of the new year, it's a time
17
:where you're probably hearing
that tried and true messaging from
18
:everyone on Beyonce's internet.
19
:You know the one I'm talking about,
the one encouraging you to finish
20
:or start the quarter strong, to
rind out this next quarter of:
21
:But you won't be hearing that from me.
22
:In this phase of my life journey,
I'm not stressing to hurry up and
23
:sprint to some arbitrary finish line.
24
:I know the beginning of the new
year hustle is still moving strong,
25
:but let's take a moment to fill
our cups, especially if, like me,
26
:yours might be running on empty.
27
:I'm choosing ease in this stage.
28
:I'm dreamscaping what that looks
like, I'm mapping out and planning
29
:this next phase of my life.
30
:with the goals of flexibility
and freedom first.
31
:But while I'm doing that,
I'm also nurturing myself.
32
:And one way I'm doing that is by clearing
out some of the books on my TBR list.
33
:During those long hours of
chemotherapy last year, I found
34
:solace in romance novels, more
specifically black romance novels.
35
:They were my companions through
eight rounds of chemotherapy.
36
:With each round lasting about five hours.
37
:So, as you can imagine, that
left a lot of time for reading.
38
:And today, I want to share some of the
lack romance novels I read in:
39
:I know I'm absolutely late in sharing
some of my faves, but I'm okay with that.
40
:These books brought me comfort,
joy, and a reminder that love
41
:and joy truly knows no bounds.
42
:So let's start off with Nikki
Payne's Pride and Protest.
43
:This was one of my favorite recent
romances and retelling of Pride
44
:and Prejudice set in modern day.
45
:Our heroine is Liza B, a radio DJ who
is determined not to let Pemberley
46
:development take her neighborhood and
turn it into expensive condos that
47
:will push out the local community.
48
:So you know the gentrification issue
set the fireworks off in this novel.
49
:But it's still such a hot,
fun, and important story.
50
:Our hero is Dorsey Fitzgerald,
51
:the acting CEO of Pemberley
Development, who finds Liza
52
:both frustrating and alluring.
53
:As he deals with his own uncomfortable
space at the head of the company
54
:when he would actually rather be in
charge of the philanthropic legacy
55
:left behind by his adoptive mother.
56
:Of course, Dorsey and Liza come
to blows when they first meet.
57
:Liza is sneaking into an event and
mistakes Dorsey for a waiter as she tries
58
:to get her handmade protest signs inside.
59
:Right from the start, Nikki does a
fantastic job of portraying cultural
60
:and social classes and exploring
the roles of the Black Bennett
61
:family and Dorsey's experience as a
Filipino man adopted by white parents.
62
:Nikki Payne once said in an interview
that she read research on aesthetics
63
:and power and what we find beautiful,
why we find things in people beautiful.
64
:Some of that research was done
on dating apps and how people
65
:are interacting on dating apps.
66
:What I found interesting, but not
surprising, is that Black women
67
:and Asian men were the least
responded to on these dating apps.
68
:They were seen and perceived to
have the least sexual capital in
69
:these spaces because of perceptions
about femininity and masculinity
70
:that have taken over in pop culture.
71
:People have internalized
what's considered beautiful.
72
:I want to say that I'm
shocked, but I'm not.
73
:Anyway, I enjoyed Nikki's
retelling of Pride and Prejudice.
74
:In Nikki's version, she has transformed
the world of Elizabeth Bennet and Mr.
75
:Darcy, taking it to
modern day Washington, D.
76
:C., addressing themes of race,
class, and gentrification.
77
:Next up on my list of best
black romance novels in:
78
:is actually not a romance novel.
79
:Black Love Matters is a series
of essays about black romance
80
:being seen and happily ever after.
81
:Edited by Jessica Pryde, who
you may know from Book Riot.
82
:It's a collection of essays by Black
Romance authors about a variety of
83
:different intersectional topics and
the publication of Black Romance.
84
:Black Romance is so important and this
is a really cool book that you should
85
:definitely add to your bookshelf.
86
:These are essays and storytelling from
some of the luminaries of Black romance.
87
:It's a great way to frame your
knowledge and understanding of
88
:Black romance and the work that
Black authors are doing out there.
89
:Next up is Mickey Chambers
Shakes It Up by Cherish Reid.
90
:This book is really fun.
91
:Mickey Chambers is in her
early 30s and she's an adjunct
92
:professor teaching literature.
93
:And as you know, with the
life of an educator, it's hard
94
:for her to make ends meet.
95
:Mickey's not a full time employee
of the university or anywhere.
96
:She also has some medical needs,
but that's They aren't the center
97
:of the story, just part of her
life and what she goes through.
98
:As the book starts, Mickey's
at dinner at her parents house.
99
:But you know, you get the sense
that everyone is thinking, why
100
:can't Mickey get it together?
101
:Anyway, Mickey picks up a job
as a bartender even though
102
:she's never bartended before.
103
:And the owner, Diego Acosta,
is a big old ball of stress.
104
:His wife has passed away, and he's worried
about running her bar into the ground.
105
:Diego is in his early 40s, but he's
going back to college part time.
106
:He's basically like, what
the hell am I doing here?
107
:And then you've got Mickey,
who is super sunny and sexy.
108
:And she's a pro at the college thing.
109
:Mickey ends up being the professor for the
online writing class that Diego is taking.
110
:And this is a whole other complication
that neither one of them expected.
111
:But they can't stay away from each other.
112
:This is a delightful
book that I truly loved.
113
:Let's talk about Jana
Goes Wild by Farah Haran.
114
:Jana Goes Wild is probably one
of the best second-chance romance
115
:novels I've read in a while.
116
:Jana and Anil had a brief hot
and sexy fling about 10 years
117
:ago and Jana ended up pregnant.
118
:At the same time that she finds out
she's pregnant, she also finds out
119
:that she and Anil can't be together.
120
:So Jana decides to go back home
to Toronto to raise her daughter.
121
:Anil is determined to be a
part of his daughter's life,
122
:so he also moves to Toronto.
123
:And Anil becomes like this distant planet
orbiting her, always in the background
124
:of her life, which she finds so annoying.
125
:Jana and Anil both end up
attending a destination wedding
126
:in the Serengeti in Tanzania.
127
:Jana doesn't realize that Anil has been
pining for her for the last decade.
128
:He is still very much in love
with Jana and knows he screwed up.
129
:Now, he just wants to figure out
what can he do to get her back.
130
:This is such an amazing book.
131
:The emotional complexity, the way
they interact with the families,
132
:her understanding of who Anil was
then versus who he is now, and,
133
:and then the same about herself.
134
:It's definitely one that
you should add to your list.
135
:Then we have Goal by The
Incredible Alexandria House.
136
:This romance novel centers around
Noah Kennedy, a pro hockey player who
137
:meets his match in the brilliant Dr.
138
:Zoe Broussard.
139
:Together, they navigate not only
their own personal struggles,
140
:but also the challenges that come
with being in the public eye.
141
:Goal delivers steamy scenes, heartfelt
moments, and a very engaging storyline.
142
:It's definitely a must read for all
the romance enthusiasts out there.
143
:And then we have The Build Up
by debut author Tati Richardson.
144
:I initially picked this one up
because it's set in Atlanta.
145
:I always love to read books based
in Atlanta so I can see if I can
146
:recognize any of the scenery.
147
:I'm so glad I grabbed this one though.
148
:Such a fun debut book.
149
:This romance features two black
architects, Ari and Porter, and
150
:baby Tati Richardson manages to
take on all the things in this one.
151
:Colorism, sexism, plus-size girl
microaggressions, and fat shaming,
152
:but she still manages to keep
the book super sexy, fun, and
153
:hilariously funny at the same time.
154
:I love that Porter was feeling Ari and
gone for her from the first glimpse.
155
:And you know I love that Ari
is a plus size and curvy woman.
156
:This is a slow burn office romance but
once the spice kicks in you won't be able
157
:to put it down and you'll love the ending.
158
:Next is Hostile Takeover by Christina C.
159
:Jones.
160
:And if you're into Christina C.
161
:Jones, you know she writes a spicy tale.
162
:If you're into stories that mix business
and pleasure, this one's for you.
163
:Christina weaves a tale of ambition,
passion, and unexpected connections that
164
:will keep you hooked from start to finish.
165
:And then we have The Neighbor
Favor by Kristina Forest.
166
:This book brings together friendship
and romance in the most delightful way.
167
:It's a sweet and charming read
that will leave you with a warm
168
:heart and a smile on your face.
169
:And so there you have it.
170
:That's my list of just a few of the
best Black romance novels of:
171
:These books were a lifeline for
me, and I hope they bring you
172
:as much joy as they brought me.
173
:But don't just take my word for it.
174
:Check out the show notes for
the full list and links to these
175
:fantastic reads and grab you a copy.
176
:Immerse yourself in these
beautiful love stories.
177
:That's a wrap for today's
episode of Culture Lit.
178
:Thank you so much for joining
me on this journey through the
179
:world of Black Romance literature.
