Lucia Knight:

You're busy, yeah?

Lucia Knight:

There's never enough time to focus on your future work happiness.

Lucia Knight:

But if you don't focus on it, things just stay the same, don't they?

Lucia Knight:

In these short episodes, I wanna give you some tiny ideas, some mini experiments

Lucia Knight:

to try out this week to either dial down a pain point for you at work or

Lucia Knight:

dial up your potential for joy at work.

Lucia Knight:

Let's dive in.

Lucia Knight:

Envy isn't all bad.

Lucia Knight:

It's a signal, a nudge, from your body, mind and emotions

Lucia Knight:

that something's missing.

Lucia Knight:

At work, envy can serve as a guide, helping you to pinpoint desires, gaps,

Lucia Knight:

and limitations that are holding you back.

Lucia Knight:

Here's a little story to illustrate how envy can fuel joy.

Lucia Knight:

Back in 2019, one of the first participants in the career redesign

Lucia Knight:

program, The Fierce Emporium, was Pete.

Lucia Knight:

He had just celebrated his 50th birthday.

Lucia Knight:

And during our first call, Pete shared something that

Lucia Knight:

has stayed with me ever since.

Lucia Knight:

A recurring, daily bout of envy that shaped his career transformation.

Lucia Knight:

Pete was, and is, A charismatic Englishman with great taste in women.

Lucia Knight:

His wife, coincidentally, is from about 100 miles away

Lucia Knight:

from my hometown in Ireland.

Lucia Knight:

He'd spent decades working in big banks as a project manager.

Lucia Knight:

His daily commute, often a crawl through relentless traffic, provided

Lucia Knight:

him with far too much time to think.

Lucia Knight:

And every day, without fail, Pete would pass road workers in neon vests,

Lucia Knight:

building new roads and repairing the old.

Lucia Knight:

Each time he passed, he was overcome with envy.

Lucia Knight:

Not mild envy, but raging, all consuming, gut wrenching envy.

Lucia Knight:

To Pete, these workers seemed to have it all.

Lucia Knight:

Fresh air, physical activity, an honest day's work for an honest day's pay.

Lucia Knight:

It got to the point where he couldn't stop thinking about it.

Lucia Knight:

Envy was taking over and making him question everything about his career.

Lucia Knight:

Eventually, Pete took action.

Lucia Knight:

He stopped passively stewing in envy and started exploring

Lucia Knight:

ways to redesign his work life.

Lucia Knight:

That's how we met.

Lucia Knight:

You can read his career change case study at Midlife Unstuck.

Lucia Knight:

And what Pete taught me is that envy at work can serve three powerful purposes.

Lucia Knight:

Number one, envy is a vital message from your body.

Lucia Knight:

Envy is a light visceral sign.

Lucia Knight:

It's your body telling you in no uncertain terms that someone else

Lucia Knight:

has something you deeply want.

Lucia Knight:

When you feel envy, pay attention.

Lucia Knight:

Where do you feel it?

Lucia Knight:

A pang in your chest, maybe?

Lucia Knight:

A twist in your gut?

Lucia Knight:

That physical reaction can offer rare clarity.

Lucia Knight:

It's like an internal GPS pointing you towards something that

Lucia Knight:

could increase your joy at work.

Lucia Knight:

For Pete, the envy he felt for road workers was his body's way of

Lucia Knight:

shouting, you need more physical activity, more time in the outdoors

Lucia Knight:

and more purpose in your work.

Lucia Knight:

Number two.

Lucia Knight:

Envy highlights a gap you can bridge.

Lucia Knight:

Often envy is about capability.

Lucia Knight:

If you envy someone else's job, it's usually because they're doing

Lucia Knight:

something you're not yet ready to do.

Lucia Knight:

Notice the word yet.

Lucia Knight:

Envy isn't just an emotional problem.

Lucia Knight:

It's often a learning problem.

Lucia Knight:

Maybe you lack skills, confidence, or the network to do what they're doing yet.

Lucia Knight:

But the good news is you can take steps to close those gaps.

Lucia Knight:

When you reframe envy as an opportunity for growth, it can

Lucia Knight:

become a powerful joy motivator.

Lucia Knight:

Number three.

Lucia Knight:

Envy reveals what you can't change and need to adapt for.

Lucia Knight:

Sometimes envy points to something you'll never be able to fix,

Lucia Knight:

no matter how hard you try.

Lucia Knight:

And that's okay.

Lucia Knight:

For instance, I have a major brain gap when it comes to

Lucia Knight:

numbers involving dates and times.

Lucia Knight:

It's caused everything from missed flights to Sydney, to showing up for

Lucia Knight:

a West End show three weeks early.

Lucia Knight:

So twice a year, when the clocks change in the UK, and my US client's time

Lucia Knight:

zones shift on different weekends of the month, my mind practically implodes.

Lucia Knight:

I seriously envy people who glide through life, unbothered by time zones.

Lucia Knight:

But instead of beating myself up, I've adapted.

Lucia Knight:

Google calendar and my assistant do the heavy lifting and I've learned

Lucia Knight:

to communicate my limitations with my clients up front.

Lucia Knight:

So that we both show up at the right time for each other.

Lucia Knight:

And what's the result?

Lucia Knight:

Less stress and more joy.

Lucia Knight:

But beware the dark side of Envy.

Lucia Knight:

Da da da!

Lucia Knight:

Of course, Envy isn't all sunshine and clarity.

Lucia Knight:

Chronic Envy without action leads to to you feeling stuck.

Lucia Knight:

And it's poisonous cousin jealousy, the bitterness and resentment

Lucia Knight:

that someone else has, what you don't, is never productive.

Lucia Knight:

It just keeps you stuck.

Lucia Knight:

Here's our simple experiment this week.

Lucia Knight:

I want you to pause and take a minute to reflect on what makes you envious at work.

Lucia Knight:

Write it down if you can.

Lucia Knight:

Then identify one tiny actionable step that you can take to get

Lucia Knight:

closer to what you're longing for.

Lucia Knight:

Whether it's a new skill, reaching out to someone new, or simply

Lucia Knight:

adjusting your expectations.

Lucia Knight:

A tiny step can get you on the move.

Lucia Knight:

Envy isn't the enemy.

Lucia Knight:

When used wisely, it can offer you a cracking steer

Lucia Knight:

towards greater joy at work.

Lucia Knight:

Just ask Pete.

Lucia Knight:

He's living proof.

Lucia Knight:

If you enjoyed this, you might also enjoy my Life Satisfaction Assessment.

Lucia Knight:

It's a 30 minute program where I guide you through a deep dive into 10 areas

Lucia Knight:

of your life to assess what's bringing you joy and what's bringing you down.

Lucia Knight:

I call it Derailed.

Lucia Knight:

It's a fabulous place to begin a joy at work redesign.
