The Sacrament – Cult Movie Section Part 2

[:

[00:00:22] Scott: Does this hold up? And just what the hell is a good movie anyway? I'm Frank Roll. I'm Scott Moran. And we're the Last Video Store

[:

[00:00:39] Frank: I'm still not used to the fact that it gets fucking cold here. And then it gets fucking hot again. Like, and I knew it was coming.

[:

[00:00:48] Frank: I knew that it was coming, but I thought we had this already where we felt the cool and it got warm and then it got cool again.

[:

[00:00:59] Scott: cold. And I think you just don't remember.

[:

[00:01:12] Scott: Yeah. I don't like that. I'm going to have a stick shift and I get on three highways. It gets work. Didn't you

[:

[00:01:18] Scott: bought chains though? I did buy chains. Yeah. You could be

[:

[00:01:23] Scott: except I bought them for Kelly's car. Oh, so I'd have to take her car. Well. You can

[:

[00:01:29] Scott: prepared.

[:

[00:01:40] Frank: it's like bad weather

[:

[00:01:53] Scott: Oh, fuck. Shit. Season three. No, I'm on like season two. Okay. I hadn't watched it at all.

[:

[00:02:04] Scott: Yeah. I need to do three. My favorite is the Satanist guy that lives in his house. Oh, yeah. He's

[:

[00:02:10] Frank: Yeah. Uh, I haven't seen it in so long. What's his name?

[:

[00:02:26] Scott: Like, shirt's not as long as you think it is, bud.

[:

[00:02:51] Frank: Yeah,

[:

[00:02:55] Frank: Behaving! Have you gotten there yet? Oh, yeah, yeah. Okay. Um, Snapped. Did you watch any Snapped, or the new episodes of Snapped?

[:

[00:03:04] Frank: Snapped. I tried it a couple weeks ago.

[:

[00:03:09] Frank: I mean Just, there's so much true crime.

[:

[00:03:26] Scott: Oh, we've been watching, uh, Upload. It's a quirky Greg Daniels show. Oh, it's Greg Daniels? Yeah. It's good. I feel like I have. The Cigarette Smoking Man is in it. No, yeah, man, that guy's still around. I mean

[:

[00:03:42] Scott: Morley The fake cigarette

[:

[00:03:47] Scott: map.

[:

[00:03:50] Frank: aren't isn't that what they it's like

[:

[00:04:04] Frank: a horror movie where when they dropped a cigarette, it was an American Spirit.

[:

[00:04:07] Scott: they're always American Spirits now. What?

[:

[00:04:13] Scott: they'll show their pack and then somebody will be, like, be Like a completely different pack. Well that's the thing. It was the

[:

[00:04:21] Frank: And I was like, really? Yeah. Like really? And then whatever it was, we were like, he would be smoking an American Spirit.

[:

[00:04:31] Frank: time. Hey, why don't people just smoke cloves? That's what we used to do.

[:

[00:04:38] Scott: But then your lips

[:

[00:04:41] Scott: Smells like you hate your dad.

[:

[00:04:49] Scott: Just fucking inhaling it, coughing all over the place. They're great for gaming. I like the perique tobacco.

[:

[00:05:00] Frank: It's harsh. Sometimes it comes in a fancy tin.

[:

[00:05:18] Frank: Let me start with this and you can tap it. I went and saw Poltergeist

[:

[00:05:25] Frank: It was like right before, right? That's why

[:

[00:05:29] Frank: Okay. So yeah. I went and saw Poltergeist in the theater. Uh, thanks again, Austin Film Society for having awesome movies at an old, you know, a theater I used to go to when I was a kid. Scary clown.

[:

[00:05:49] Frank: smoking weed on the bed! PG movie. And fucking Craig T. Nelson, he just like, The shake like falls on the bed and he's like, You do this. And he just leaves all the shake on the bed and I'm like, Was that how it used to be with the Reggie?

[:

[00:06:06] Frank: Schwag. So yeah, I saw Poltergeist in the theater. That was cool. You know, I didn't get to see You moved the headstones but you didn't move the bar! Ha ha ha! While the fucking coffins are popping up out of the ground, it was great.

[:

[00:06:27] Scott: year. I saw The Thing at the Paramount a few years back, it was like a dream come true. I had never seen it in the theater before, and man, it was great, it was a great experience seeing The Thing.

[:

[00:06:41] Frank: You know, yeah, and like I see like they're showing Scarface, certain movies are making appearances at bigger theaters. I just got an ad, Scarface is going to be out for a couple days in November, I think. And like, that's cool. I don't know

[:

[00:06:55] Scott: This

[:

[00:06:58] Scott: like old seats. Yeah, it's like a, it's the Lincoln Theater, isn't it? Yeah, Lincoln Village. I saw Rush Hour there.

[:

[00:07:05] Scott: like The Mummy. I think I saw Blade there

[:

[00:07:11] Frank: I saw the Lion King there. No, man, I could keep going on. Did I say Indian in the cupboard? I saw Indian in the cupboard there. Um, No, but that's what I'm saying. It's cool to go back now, have a beer while I'm watching a fucking eighties horror movie. It's great. That's some good shit. Go polder guys. I also watched some sci fi again.

[:

[00:07:29] Scott: attack of the killer tomatoes.

[:

[00:07:48] Scott: with me Oh, she was into it dude this

[:

[00:07:51] Frank: So if you know, it's a turning point Yeah You know like the animu animated movies that are newer elementals a new one that we tried to take her to the theater to watch It she got too scared even Paw Patrol movie. She loves that shit got scared This girl watched Godzilla vs. Kong from start to finish with me, fucking loved it.

[:

[00:08:10] Scott: that's weird. It

[:

[00:08:19] Scott: it. Like

[:

[00:08:31] Frank: Weird. Yeah, and then Paw Patrol is like a kid's thing. It's dogs. Yeah, I know what it is. Yeah, so that movie she went with friends. She stayed, but parts of it were apparently freaking her out a little. She was like chillin Godzilla vs. Kong, and you know that shit is like, it's intense, like monster action.

[:

[00:08:53] Scott: So that's the entryway to, to Frank Avenue. With the monster movies that I like. With the monster movie

[:

[00:09:01] Frank: I'm just like, this is what you're gonna watch, and she liked it. And she understood at the end, she's like, he found his home, and I'm like, she knew that Cobb found his home? I didn't

[:

[00:09:13] Frank: Rampage. Yeah.

[:

[00:09:18] Frank: Yeah, that's got the wolf and the gorilla and whatever the other

[:

[00:09:25] Frank: was like a crocodile, right? Alligator? Yeah, that's it. Um, I watched it. Yeah, I enjoyed it. It was better than San Andreas.

[:

[00:09:38] Scott: Yeah.

[:

[00:09:41] Scott: I think it was Skyscraper. Was that it? Something like that. Fuck. There was a lot of teeter tottering on

[:

[00:09:54] Scott: nowhere.

[:

[00:10:08] Frank: perfect sense. Well, so I watched the two, you know, Godzilla King of the and Godzilla King of the Monsters was second technically the second one.

[:

[00:10:32] Scott: The one where Brian Cranston unfairly dies way too early.

[:

[00:10:36] Frank: Jesus. But then I watched Party fell. Yeah. I watched one I hadn't seen. I watched a new movie. It's newer. I did it. What'd you do? Bones and all. What's that? Timothy Chalamet.

[:

[00:10:53] Frank: It was different. Okay.

[:

[00:10:57] Frank: It's not what I thought it would be. Okay. But it's also set in, like, I feel like the 80s. Okay. So, you know, there's a lot of that going around, but they

[:

[00:11:09] Frank: He's like, uh, a while back. I mean, the

[:

[00:11:13] Frank: Yeah, I mean, Dune, the next one's coming out. The next movie's coming out sometime. I can't wait for that. That's my shit. Yeah. Um, I don't look up. He was great in that. The kid.

[:

[00:11:25] Frank: I like him. I haven't seen the king yet. That one, uh, who else is in it? Like Robert Pattinson, I think it's on Netflix.

[:

[00:11:50] Frank: All the way through for the first time. I'm like, this is what this is what this is about. That's

[:

[00:11:55] Frank: cool movie time We asked did you like Godzilla or Kong better? Which

[:

[00:12:08] Frank: Godzilla looks hardcore in that one.

[:

[00:12:17] Scott: Dude, check that out. Yeah, there's some shit I'm waiting for. Uh, I'm excited to see that, uh, Zack Snyder Rebel Moon movie. It's a Netflix movie. It's gonna come out soon.

[:

[00:12:30] Scott: huh?

[:

[00:12:39] Frank: Anthony Hopkins. There you

[:

[00:12:45] Frank: wanted to see in the theater. Yeah, I wanted to see you in the theater. I just was a lazy ass I didn't go see it fucking it's gone.

[:

[00:12:53] Scott: still in theater. Is it? I mean, who knows if it will still be in theaters when this episode comes out, but yeah Well, we almost come and go I would really like to see that movie though. That movie looks like a lot of fun And I'm starved for an original sci fi movie, just like a new story.

[:

[00:13:11] Frank: I'm pissed I didn't go see it. We almost saw the new Leo one in theaters. But it's three and a half

[:

[00:13:21] Frank: listened to the book and said it was

[:

[00:13:29] Scott: And, uh, She wanted it to be, so, We've gotten to a high standard of, like, Uh, historical fiction. At this point, like, if it's just non fiction, we're a little bored. There's a minimum you gotta meet. You know, The Indifferent Stars Above, which is about the Donner Party, has really just, it kills it. It's like, it's like a novel.

[:

[00:14:04] Frank: Ugh, I got Game Pass, man. I've been playing fucking

[:

[00:14:11] Scott: Did I tell you I

[:

[00:14:19] Scott: I could see that happening to you. Yeah, my friends wanted to play that, uh, it's like a game where you run a restaurant.

[:

[00:14:30] Frank: Well, yeah, there's um, I know what you're talking about, I think, where you make the plates.

[:

[00:14:38] Frank: Dude, there's a car detailing simulator. There's a mechanic simulator. There's a barista simulator. They used to come out with these every now and then. It's conditioning the young folk to work in the service industry.

[:

[00:14:54] Scott: What's weird to me when somebody really enjoys Doing something that like, people get paid not enough money to do, that's hard. There's a car detailing simulator. I mean, that is how it starts, like, dudes are into flight simulators, they become pilots. Yeah. Chopping tomatoes.

[:

[00:15:19] Scott: Fruit Ninja training people to do? Flick their bean?

[:

[00:15:28] Frank: could move that fast.

[:

[00:15:44] Frank: Aid. Okay. Yes. So this is, uh, the sacrament. Not Sacramento.

[:

[00:15:50] Scott: Found footage movie. Found footage. Not necessarily horror. No, I don't know what to call this one. It's by a horror director. I enjoyed it. I thought it was a good movie It was fine. It was intense. It had a nice pace and I

[:

[00:16:11] Frank: I

[:

[00:16:19] Frank: score it, I would score it in the 4s IMDB range. Really? I would give it a 4 ish. That low? Yeah. Because, was it supposed to be based off the real shit?

[:

[00:16:32] Scott: not far at all.

[:

[00:16:36] Scott: did like the, the Vice documentary aspect of it. It was a good

[:

[00:16:44] Scott: joint. I mean, he's just the producer. Close enough.

[:

[00:16:48] Frank: He touched it with his tip.

[:

[00:16:57] Frank: like a found footage rookie.

[:

[00:17:05] Frank: so. There was a lot of potential there. I think they could have made me even more uncomfortable.

[:

[00:17:09] Scott: there. Why? In what way would you like to be made more uncomfortable? Like, you wanted it to be gorier? Or you wanted it to, like, go even harder? With the death of children?

[:

[00:17:28] Frank: You're just killing kids. Of course it's gonna strike a different nerve with people. But, where's the effort there? You can kill kids all day and it's gruesome and people are like, what the fuck? That one scene, that was kind of, you know which one I'm talking about. Like that, that's fine. That's, that's graphic.

[:

[00:17:47] Scott: couldn't give it a four based on the fact that like, some of the performances in this movie are fucking good. Yeah, let's not get too deep into it before we do the summary, but like Yeah, let's

[:

[00:18:05] Frank: Like if I could make the number move. I'd say like a 4. 4

[:

[00:18:18] Frank: stars I'd give it 2. 5 maybe 3. 2.

[:

[00:18:30] Frank: really hard to trust. Well, see, that's why it wouldn't be a 4 even.

[:

[00:18:37] Scott: 5? Or a tug tug and a reach? Yeah, with extra Okay. Okay. Tell us about

[:

[00:19:01] Scott: gate.

[:

[00:19:03] Frank: Africa? South America? Is it an island somewhere? Maybe? Vice documentary filmmakers Sam and Jake accompany Patrick to the commune, referring to its location only as being in a remote part of the world. And it, it, it, it made it, it had that vibe. It felt very Tropic Thunder to me.

[:

[00:19:22] Scott: people?

[:

[00:19:37] Scott: Everybody's usually dead Theme cool with it. She was

[:

[00:19:52] Frank: The organization is formed around a man They call father and seems based in Christianity It's all very blatantly inspired by the people's temple mass suicide Massacre and the latter half of the movie is almost an identical retelling of the events with a smaller

[:

[00:20:08] Frank: That's a lot of fucking extras, man. The catering bill is gonna be huge on that one. They

[:

[00:20:16] Frank: said over, what, 60 elderly, 7 kids born that day, so how many kids, you figure that that's like at least 100, 120. How many cabins were there that slept 8 to 10

[:

[00:20:25] Scott: They gave a body count at the end about it being like one of the largest mass suicides on record and I was like yeah but people's temple was like 900 fucking people and granted a lot of them had to be coerced

[:

[00:20:43] Scott: I felt like there was maybe some stuff trimmed Like some development that was kind of trimmed off the movie here and there.

[:

[00:21:10] Scott: He just gave him some money. It was like, go do it, man. Make this happen. Yeah. Uh, the film stars A. J. Bowen as Sam, who's the reporter for Vice. Joe Swanberg as Jake, Sam's cameraman, who's been in a lot of things

[:

[00:21:27] Scott: sure. Kentucker Audley as Patrick.

[:

[00:21:55] Scott: That's not his name in the movie. What the fuck?

[:

[00:22:05] Scott: guy's in a lot of stuff. He's the, uh, store clerk in, uh, No Country for Old Men. No shit. Yeah. That's him? That's the first thing that comes to mind.

[:

[00:22:41] Scott: So that's her, AJ Bowen, Joe Swanberg. Amy Sumits, they were all in your necks. And ti west was in your next as well. I can't picture her in that. She was having sex with the dude in the, the neighbor's house with the, the record. But, but, but that was her. But, but

[:

[00:23:03] Frank: But that would make sense.

[:

[00:23:11] Frank: creepy ass little kid just popping up out of nowhere. I

[:

[00:23:22] Frank: needed something that supernatural really like blow it out of the way.

[:

[00:23:30] Scott: Yeah, I did feel a little bit like it wasn't enough that it was just like People's Temple knockoff. I wanted something like, uh, You've never seen Red State, but something like that.

[:

[00:23:45] Scott: State? We don't know. See, I've shown you the trailer I've shown you the cover of the movie.

[:

[00:23:51] Frank: It was iffy. I could have seen Red State Let's say that was a maybe.

[:

[00:24:03] Frank: do One Bedroom? I think that's still floating around out there. Yeah, for sure. And you haven't seen

[:

[00:24:07] Scott: No, not yet. It's a culty one. Joe Swanberg was given the role because of his background as a filmmaker, though. Mm hmm. But that's why he's like the cameraman guy. They could actually have him carrying the camera, you know, some of these movies like this, yeah, that's not necessarily like, there's probably like following him around like with a mic like,

[:

[00:24:29] Scott: He was good. He had the full skill set to be the cinematographer and the

[:

[00:24:37] Scott: a lot. Yeah, these guys are a group. Yeah. And I like him. I like AJ Bowen there. Yeah,

[:

[00:24:50] Frank: That's all. I said, well say 4. 5 for me.

[:

[00:25:22] Scott: I gotta give it to Gene Jones, though The guy fucking killed it. He was really

[:

[00:25:31] Scott: interview scene he apparently did in a single take. That's amazing. Doing like the bible verses and everything. Yeah,

[:

[00:25:39] Scott: Uh,

[:

[00:25:45] Frank: And that's just what somebody in that position would do. Like, there was a plan there. He knew that there was going to be a thing. You know, that he was going to attack him. You know, criticize their ways. You're just the

[:

[00:26:10] Scott: Like this one felt like legit. Yeah, like that's kind of the like way those guys would be in the beginning of like old Vice documentary from 10

[:

[00:26:23] Scott: dicks like oh you're wearing those shoes and stuff like that.

[:

[00:26:27] Frank: there was always a thing with the Vice guys I liked

[:

[00:26:43] Frank: Something that I noticed about this one, and there was another one that I'd watched recently, um, The Pyramid.

[:

[00:27:05] Scott: mean? When did that happen in this? I don't remember seeing that.

[:

[00:27:09] Frank: did, it did. There, uh, there was like one in the cabin, one outside. There were a couple in this one, not as many as the pyramid. The pyramid was really bad about it though. There's a couple of them though where it's like that's not one of the cameras in play. That one's not a piece on the board. You've got your own game piece.

[:

[00:27:37] Scott: it's like you're really watching for that though

[:

[00:27:43] Scott: It's weird cuz you watch really low budget found footage movies that you'll you'll be like this one Yeah, and I'll be like she's the fuck this one is like kind of got a budget behind it

[:

[00:27:59] Frank: What, really?

[:

[00:28:05] Frank: Max. Okay. Pretty sure it was max. Well, and what got me was the mummy the Tom Cruise one is out on Netflix right now Watching the pyramid almost made me go straight into the mummy with Tom Cruise

[:

[00:28:20] Scott: I was like we should do this fucking mummy movie with Tom Cruise It was just coming out.

[:

[00:28:27] Scott: it. Oh, really? Yeah Oh, wow.

[:

[00:28:33] Scott: Yeah, I think I'll watch it. It looks terrible.

[:

[00:28:41] Frank: Yeah. Ha ha ha. I'm gonna say yes. Okay. Alright. I'm gonna say yes. It's, you know If you say so. Look, I don't hate this. I don't. I'm just like If you know about Jim Jones Like, cause I don't even know that I don't know all the details. I haven't And I know all of them.

[:

[00:29:03] Scott: close. It is very close. That I, I think that it needs some twist.

[:

[00:29:11] Scott: You can have people Well, it wasn't even that, like, I don't even think that was necessarily for shock value. Well, no,

[:

[00:29:19] Frank: Well, I mean, I guess they're part of the group, the ones that are armed. Yeah, they were. I

[:

[00:29:32] Frank: Yeah, like these weren't like white

[:

[00:29:36] Scott: It was very much came from like a, oh yeah, okay, kind of a pure idea. It's just, you have this fucking guy.

[:

[00:29:50] Scott: I think so. They were trying to discuss whether or not she was, like, was she fucking high? Yeah, she was acting kind

[:

[00:29:59] Frank: And so was like, she has weird little like play thing that he like, here's, here's some of this, but it's okay, darling. Just one more time. We'll be fine.

[:

[00:30:10] Frank: little. And that was, she tells him because yeah, out of nowhere, Patrick, the brother, that one part, he's like making out with the two chicks.

[:

[00:30:19] Scott: What the fuck? I kind of saw that coming a little bit, you know, midsummer has this same sort of plot. Yeah. You know what I mean? These guys that come to like see the but even

[:

[00:30:33] Scott: was just a yeah it had the hard twist like the At least the hard knife twist at the end and

[:

[00:30:40] Frank: Um that like older feel you know, we're Where things that were culty or supernatural, a little bit of both, with the weird sensual stuff going on at the same time. Like, there was, the only sensual stuff in this one was the two chicks trying to get with Patrick, and what happened? Did he get

[:

[00:31:00] Scott: You think he did? I mean, you don't see him till the next day.

[:

[00:31:08] Scott: what I really wanted was a little bit more development of A. J. Bowen's character, Sam. Like, we got that, like, he was, like, gonna be a dad and stuff like that.

[:

[00:31:44] Frank: whenever this came out 2013 or 14 depending on where you looked up the year and why is it that's different

[:

[00:31:59] Frank: What is it? Why can't these people agree on what your movies came out anymore? I don't know. It's weird It's happening. The more that we watch movies the more I see it and I'm like Why the fuck doesn't IMDB agree with Netflix or

[:

[00:32:36] Scott: But either way this one came out in 2014 in both cases Festival premiere and theatrical premiere both like in the first half of the year. So get on the fucking page Hulu

[:

[00:33:00] Scott: life, huh?

[:

[00:33:11] Frank: Until you piss somebody off or, yeah. Freak out the locals when you start getting weird shit in the

[:

[00:33:17] Scott: Yeah, it's, it's uh, startling when you go do that in the middle of a jungle and like, Those people were clearly like going to run out of resources.

[:

[00:33:42] Frank: There's this mixed group of people in the woods. Not from here. We're going to fuck them up and take their shit.

[:

[00:34:05] Frank: That was Or the mom taking out the daughter That was fucked up Then taking the bullet Not like the mist at all, but Laughter Just saying Uh, I mean I could appreciate some of the stuff they did.

[:

[00:34:34] Scott: Yeah, I wanted it to take like a strong Lovecraft turn or something like that Where he was like and the elder gods are gonna come, you know Like when he was doing his sermon like it took a weird turn and people were like wait What the fuck and that's why they were backing out or he

[:

[00:34:49] Scott: Or getting away, like the place turns into like a hellhole sinkhole in the ground.

[:

[00:34:59] Frank: was like, uh,

[:

[00:35:05] Frank: carved in trees that triangulated an area.

[:

[00:35:11] Frank: something

[:

[00:35:12] Scott: When was Green Inferno? Was it around this time? Oh, well, 2014, Green Inferno, maybe,

[:

[00:35:23] Scott: Yeah, that, that goes a little harder. You know what I mean?

[:

[00:35:36] Scott: Well, Green Inferno has a 38 percent on Rotten Tomatoes.

[:

[00:35:47] Scott: so Green Inferno's 2013. Eli

[:

[00:35:55] Frank: What's the earthquake one? It's Eli Roth. It's like the same guys from Green Inferno. Like that same cast is in an Eli Roth one about an earthquake in Brazil, I think.

[:

[00:36:11] Frank: think it's called The

[:

[00:36:16] Frank: I directed, I think it's, uh, Aftershock 2012. He was a producer.

[:

[00:36:26] Frank: but I swore he was the director. Director is

[:
