Shownotes

Today, we’re diving into the concept of servanthood and what it really means for us as church communicators. At the heart of our discussion is the idea that our core identity is rooted in being servants, which can sometimes feel challenging given our human nature. We often crave recognition for our creativity and contributions, but true fulfillment comes when we embrace our role as servants, even when that recognition isn't there. We’ll explore several biblical verses that highlight this theme, reminding us that serving others is not just a duty but a pathway to peace and satisfaction. Join me as we reflect on how we can carry each other's burdens and serve with joy, making a real difference in our communities.

Week 14 Verses on Servanthood

Servant, bondslave, one with no rights of our own, one whose purpose in life is to serve another.

That is our core identity as church communicators. Just hearing those words, how our human nature wants to fight them. We want to be recognized for our brilliance and creativity.

Sometimes we grouse in private that we just aren't appreciated. And we probably aren't. Not being appreciated is what being a servant means. We can't change that reality.

But when we stop fighting it, when we submit and serve, we find peace and satisfaction in our work. The following verses may help us get to that place.

The first one is in Mark:

The next one is in John:

I tell you the truth, no servant is greater than his master, nor is a messenger greater than the one who sent him. Now that you know these things, you will be blessed if you do them."

Next Matthew:

And then one of what I think is one of the most extraordinary passages in the Bible, in Philippians 2:5-9 it says "That your attitude should be the same as that of Christ Jesus, who, being in very nature God did not consider equality with God something to be grasped, but made himself nothing.

Taking the very nature of a servant, being made in human likeness, and being found in appearance as a man, he humbled himself and became obedient to death, even death on a cross."

In Galatians 6:2 it tells us, "Carry each other's burdens, and in this way you will fulfill the law of Christ."

And in Ephesians 6:7 it says, "Work with enthusiasm, as though you were working for the Lord rather than for people."

Because remember, in Matthew:

Let me pray for you this week.

Lord Jesus, we so rebel against the idea of thinking that we're servants. But that's what we are.

And Lord, I just pray that we would serve the people well that you've given to us, that we would do it joyfully, that we would do it quietly, that we wouldn't complain, that we wouldn't think badly of people.

But Lord, that we would remember that you who were in very nature, God, that you humbled yourself and served, Lord Jesus, help us to do the same in your name. Amen. ortant work.
