If it promises to make your life easier, it's probably not good for you!
"Forever chemicals," scientifically known as per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS), are a group of synthetic compounds that are used in pretty much every type of household product imaginable. Non-stick cookware, waterproof clothing, food packaging, and even firefighting foam.
PFAS have garnered long overdue attention due to their persistence in the environment and potential health risks. PFAS have been linked to serious health issues, including hormone disruption, immune system suppression, and an increased risk of certain cancers. These contaminants have the ability to migrate from consumer products into the environment and food chain, ultimately reaching human beings.
In today's episode, I'll share with you some common household items that contain PFAS, some of which may seem to be quite innocuous on the surface, as well as healthy alternatives to them.
Here's a bit of what you'll hear in today's episode:
-A short history of PFAS...01:30
-Is it worth it to use chemical-infused clothes, bedding, even toothpaste?...03:30
-Non-stick pans are not non-chemical!...05:00
-Healthy products might be more expensive, but they're worth it in the long run...07:30
-Chemicals found in our water supply...09:15
-Perfumes, deodorants, makeup containing PFAS...13:40
