Welcome to Animal Posse, the podcast dedicated to the
2
:people and rescues making a
difference in the lives of animals.
3
:Today on the show, we're talking
with Nikki from Parish Pets.
4
:She started out as a hobbyist and
an animal lover, but her vision
5
:grew into something much bigger.
6
:She's proven that business can be a force
of animal welfare and community support.
7
:We're so excited to sit
down with you today.
8
:Nikki, welcome to the show.
9
:Nikki: Thank you so much for having me.
10
:Dixie: Yeah, I wanted to talk to
you because I got to meet you a
11
:couple of weeks ago and I got to
tour your store and you were telling
12
:me the story of how you got started
and then also how you give back.
13
:I wanted to talk more about that because
I thought it was very interesting.
14
:I love that you're in a business
for animals, and then you're
15
:also giving back to the community
and helping animals in need.
16
:Nikki: Awesome.
17
:Yeah.
18
:We loved having you at the store and
thank you guys so much for visiting.
19
:And I love to share our story
with anybody who wants to hear it.
20
:Dixie: Yeah.
21
:I know a little bit about it.
22
:So tell my audience how you got started
and what your store is like today.
23
:Nikki: So basically I used to
work in the medical field and I
24
:had to take some extended time
off of work because of a surgery.
25
:And I bought a sewing machine
with the thought of just.
26
:Filling some of my time and taught myself
how to sew dog collars because I wanted
27
:my dog at the time to have something fun
and interesting that nobody else had that
28
:was just, off of the shelf at any store.
29
:And basically.
30
:Friends and family started asking
me for some, and then I opened
31
:a Etsy shop and then I started
doing local markets around town.
32
:And after a couple of years of
that, I made the decision to take
33
:a leap of faith and do that as
my full-time job out of my house.
34
:And after a few years outta my house
it started taking over my home.
35
:And at that time I started making treats.
36
:I was in about 13 different retailers.
37
:Around Baton Rouge and Gonzales and
Prairieville and surrounding areas.
38
:And I just decided if we had a
storefront we could offer other things
39
:like treats and toys and but also
with the thought of they could be.
40
:Good things for animals.
41
:Healthy food, healthy
treat things like that.
42
:Dixie: I met you because you were able
to do the grant check presentation from
43
:the Mission Meow Grant that I received.
44
:Yes.
45
:You are a partner with Mission Meow.
46
:How did you come to partner with
them and how did you find them?
47
:Nikki: One of the things that I'm pretty
passionate about in the store besides
48
:just having good options for pets is
having local or handmade and other small
49
:businesses because that's how I started.
50
:I definitely wanna highlight.
51
:Them.
52
:And at the time I was carrying
a brand called for Mu Cat toys.
53
:And my customers loved her toys.
54
:They were always so cute.
55
:And cats went crazy for 'em.
56
:And she actually introduced
me to Mission Meow.
57
:And there's.
58
:Usually a lot more opportunities
to give back when it comes
59
:to dogs for the most part.
60
:And I wanted to make sure when I
started Parish pets, that's why I
61
:made sure to include the name pets
and not, dog or anything like that.
62
:'cause I wanted to include
cats and other animals.
63
:After she explained mission meow to
me I really loved what they were doing
64
:and how they were going about it.
65
:And reached out to them
about partnering with them.
66
:And that was probably, I think about I
feel like it's been at least three years
67
:that I've been a partner with them.
68
:Dixie: That's amazing, and I know it's
because of people like you that they
69
:can afford to give these grants out.
70
:Nikki: Yeah, I'm just, honestly thankful
that my customers continue to shop
71
:with me and I'm able to donate to them.
72
:I think their organization
is so important.
73
:What they're doing, they're
helping so many different rescues.
74
:Just their whole entire platform and
how they go about it is so amazing
75
:to me just because their reach is
so big and they can do so much.
76
:Dixie: What kind of pets
do you have at home?
77
:Nikki: I have two dogs.
78
:And, but we're excited because we are
talking about partnering with one of
79
:our local rescues and having some foster
cats available in the store as a little
80
:bit of a shop pet for us but also so
they can get a little more exposure.
81
:And hopefully, find a good home for them.
82
:Dixie: That's awesome.
83
:Now I know the place that I
visited, it was really spectacular.
84
:Like you have the most amazing yard.
85
:Thank you.
86
:You had some incredible ideas of
what you wanna do with that yard.
87
:So can you tell everybody a
little bit about your new place?
88
:And I thought the story on how you
got your place was interesting too,
89
:if you wouldn't mind sharing that.
90
:Nikki: Yeah.
91
:So I was in another building for
almost right at four years at,
92
:not far from our new building.
93
:It was basically not even
a mile down the road.
94
:But I really needed to expand.
95
:I wanted to be able to just offer
more to my customers and be a
96
:little more visible because I've.
97
:Wanna hold events, wanna
hold adoption events.
98
:And where I was, it just wasn't, didn't
have the visibility I wanted for that.
99
:And there was this one building
that was probably sitting empty
100
:for a good three to four years.
101
:And I really loved this building.
102
:I just loved, it was a mid-century
modern looking building.
103
:It's one of my favorite time
periods for stuff like that.
104
:And I just always really liked it.
105
:And I was actually supposed to go look
at it for a showing finally, the week
106
:I was supposed to go someone else put
a contract in on it and bought it.
107
:And I was super devastated.
108
:Could not get over it because the person
who bought it ended up not doing anything
109
:with the building and it sat empty
for another, almost a year and a half.
110
:And so that hurt my feelings way more.
111
:And.
112
:We kept looking.
113
:And I just happened to be at another
place one day looking with my real
114
:estate agent and I wasn't even inside.
115
:I was outside looking around and the
guy who was in the current building I
116
:was looking at, just randomly happened
to mention to my real estate agent
117
:that he had a friend that had a piece
of property that he was about to need
118
:to get rid of and put on the market.
119
:It was on Government Street
somewhere around the post office.
120
:And , this building is right next to
the post office on Government Street,
121
:and I had to go to work, so I left.
122
:And as soon as my real estate agent left,
he called me and was like I think it's
123
:the building you've been waiting on.
124
:And so he ended up
doing some research and.
125
:We figured out who owned it and
the rest is kind of history.
126
:We ended up with it.
127
:But it just almost feels like
we were meant to be there.
128
:It's crazy how it worked out.
129
:And we've been.
130
:Opened there since the end of
November last year . It has a yard
131
:that we fenced in to make secure
and we're super, super excited.
132
:We actually have our first pet centered.
133
:Vendor market this weekend on Sunday.
134
:So we partnered with a market
that was already established in a
135
:different city and we're bringing
them to Baton Rouge in our space.
136
:And we're gonna have like vendors but also
keeping it pet centric with the vendors.
137
:So we have some local treat makers,
dog food some boarding places coming
138
:out, some vet clinics some trainers.
139
:We're gonna have adoptable dogs out there
from apaws the rescue that we're working
140
:with to have the foster cats in-house.
141
:And, we're, we'd love to keep the
space open for events and just over
142
:the next year or so, wanna kind of
figure out what we want to do with it.
143
:We have, thoughts of possibly turning it
into a really nice neighborhood dog park.
144
:We have thoughts of just really not
doing anything with it and leaving
145
:it like it is so we can continue
to host pet friendly events.
146
:And, we have plans with some of the local
yoga and Pilates studios to eventually
147
:do yoga and Pilates with adoptable pets.
148
:So many.
149
:I feel like the possibilities are
just so endless in that space.
150
:And that's what we're super
excited about with being there.
151
:Dixie: Yeah, that's amazing.
152
:And congrats on having your first
event too, 'cause I know you were
153
:telling me a little bit about it.
154
:How many vendors are you
gonna have out there?
155
:Nikki: I think we have.
156
:Between 12 and 13.
157
:And then we have the adoption
agency on top of that.
158
:We're super excited to have that many
people out 'cause it's definitely a
159
:trial to see, how it all goes, how
everybody fits in the backyard and
160
:and it's gonna be a beautiful weekend.
161
:So also very thankful for that.
162
:Dixie: Yeah, I did hear it's
supposed to be really nice
163
:this weekend, so that's great.
164
:Another thing that you did in your
store too, you have a section where
165
:you had pet food for the community.
166
:Nikki: Yeah.
167
:Honestly, I took that idea from the
community fridges that we have in a lot
168
:of different places around Louisiana.
169
:We have a we have one in Baton Rouge
that's pretty close to our store.
170
:And I do, a few things with the place that
the community fridge is located at the
171
:Red Shoes and they're great organization.
172
:And I just wanted to take that same
model because they even told me they
173
:had some people asking for pet food,
sometimes looking for pet food.
174
:And I donated to it a few times.
175
:But it's hard.
176
:It's like I don't wanna bring a.
177
:Whole bag, a 30 pound bag of dog
food and only one person gets it.
178
:And unfortunately at our last
location, we just didn't have the
179
:space to do anything like that.
180
:So we just made sure when we moved,
we kept a little area and made a
181
:little shelf and we, put everything
in Ziploc bags, label it and people
182
:can bring unopened stuff to us
and we'll, put it on the pantry.
183
:We've even had some customers that
are in the store and they've bought
184
:a bag of dog food right off the shelf
and told us to put it, towards the
185
:pantry which was extremely touching.
186
:That people just really care in the
community about things like that.
187
:And we have, a little.
188
:Basket where we'll take gently
used toys, people have brought
189
:blankets, all kind of things.
190
:And it, it gets used a good
bit and everybody, everyone
191
:is super respectful of it.
192
:They take what they need,
leave enough for others.
193
:It's been, a really, I think it's just
really awesome to have it in the store.
194
:Dixie: Do you have a lot of
people coming in to get it then?
195
:Nikki: We do honestly, we
have a good bit of people.
196
:I've even had customers that come
in and regularly buy dog food from
197
:me and, there's a little bit of
a tight month and they need to
198
:grab a couple bags off the shelf.
199
:It's you just never know
when somebody might need it.
200
:The one thing I will say, we
usually have a lot more dog food
201
:available on there than cat food.
202
:So we're usually, a little more
short on the cat side, but we
203
:do have quite a few people.
204
:Who use it.
205
:And we put a sign at the Baton Rouge
community fridge letting people
206
:know that it's at our store in
case they're looking for pet food.
207
:Dixie: Yeah, I was just gonna
ask you that, how people were
208
:finding out that you had that.
209
:Nikki: Yeah, the the, we spoke, with
the red shoes and like they let us
210
:put a little sign 'cause they have.
211
:A shed built around their fridge.
212
:So we have a sign with our hours and,
where we're located about the pet pantry
213
:in their community fridge, and then
we, try to post it on social media and
214
:have it up there as much as we can.
215
:Dixie: Yeah, I think that's such
an important thing to have too,
216
:because a lot of the times when it
comes to people having to rehome
217
:their pets or keep their pets.
218
:It's a matter of being able to feed them.
219
:So having that resource for them
is so incredibly helpful because it
220
:does allow them to keep their pets.
221
:Nikki: Yeah, for sure.
222
:I mean it.
223
:And like I said like we
definitely have some people who,
224
:are regular customers of ours.
225
:I mean there are definitely people,
it comes down to sometimes it's
226
:just a few weeks that you know they
need help and yeah, I mean there
227
:are people that definitely have
had to rehome a pet or something
228
:to that, just because they can't.
229
:Feed 'em at that time.
230
:And that's terrible.
231
:People love their pets.
232
:They're a part of the family.
233
:I think it's definitely important
if we're able to help people in
234
:any kind of situation like that.
235
:Dixie: Had you always
helped pets prior to this?
236
:Nikki: I've always loved animals.
237
:We had animals growing up.
238
:We always had dogs and cats.
239
:My best friend growing up, her family
always had everything, all the dogs,
240
:all the cats, all the reptiles.
241
:And I actually, when I
was younger, wanted to.
242
:Be a vet tech and I wanted to be in
an animal related field because I
243
:wanted to do something helping animals.
244
:And I was also interested in the.
245
:Surgery or medical part of it or whatever.
246
:And I ended up taking a turn
and going into the surgery
247
:world with people instead.
248
:And that was great and it was
a very interesting career and
249
:I loved my job for a long time.
250
:But it's funny how when I had to step
back from that, I ended up, taking a turn
251
:back towards animals without even really
meaning to or trying, just by making
252
:my own dog a dog collar at my house.
253
:So it was crazy how that worked out.
254
:Dixie: Yeah.
255
:Yeah.
256
:It is.
257
:And I think that's what
I liked about your story.
258
:When you were telling me just
about how you started and then how
259
:you got the building, it was like
everything fell into place so that
260
:you could, in a way help animals.
261
:Nikki: Yeah.
262
:I love thinking about it that
way, I hope honestly, if that's
263
:the only way people think about
parish pets, I would love that.
264
:Obviously we want to be here, given.
265
:People, fun toys and, good
treats and those sort of
266
:things to give their animals.
267
:But I also want people to think about us
as a staple in the community of, giving
268
:back and helping and doing things for the
betterment of animals around our city.
269
:Dixie: Since you did start making dog
collars, do you still make your collars.
270
:Nikki: I do.
271
:So that's the one hill that I'll
die on in the store is I feel like
272
:since that's what started it all
like I still carry my collars now.
273
:They're the only place.
274
:In town that they are at.
275
:I don't have them in any
other stores or retailers or
276
:anything like that any longer.
277
:But basically I don't carry
many other collars in the store.
278
:I pretty much only carry collars
that like, I can't make myself like
279
:I don't do any kind of leather.
280
:Or anything like that.
281
:So I may have a few leather
options and stuff like that.
282
:But as far as everything else,
the majority of the collars in
283
:our store, probably a good 90%
of them are all made by me.
284
:Dixie: That's pretty cool.
285
:With the foster kittens that you
have coming in the store, when do
286
:you expect to get those kitties in?
287
:Nikki: Not sure about that.
288
:We literally just started
talking about that.
289
:So we're gonna get through this weekend.
290
:And then I also have a, another
busy weekend next weekend.
291
:Myself and one of my dogs are actually
on the Furball court which is an annual.
292
:Basically dog friendly ball that's held.
293
:It's a fundraising event for our like
big like Baton Rouge, like city shelter
294
:here, companion Animal Alliance.
295
:So myself and my dog Manny are
on the fur ball court this year
296
:and the ball is next Saturday.
297
:So we have a lot of fun.
298
:Planning to do right now.
299
:So I think once we get through these next
two weekends, we're gonna pick out a good
300
:spot for the cats and then hopefully get
them in the shop in the next few weeks.
301
:Dixie: That's awesome.
302
:What about for your little pet
show that you're doing too?
303
:Do you have any plans of doing
like more dog adoptions or
304
:more events using your yard?
305
:Nikki: We definitely do.
306
:We are talking with a couple
of people trying to get some
307
:rescues on a a schedule.
308
:And also one of the things that I
used to do at my old location, we
309
:used to have a yappy hour monthly.
310
:And I'd really love to bring those back.
311
:We just basically had a big dog party
once a month and we had a different
312
:theme every month and usually had an
activity for pet parents to do with their
313
:pets, a painting make an ornament around
Christmas time those sort of things.
314
:So hopefully I really wanna
work on bringing that back soon.
315
:Dixie: That's awesome.
316
:That's awesome.
317
:Thank you so much for coming on the show
to share all of this and I wish you the
318
:best luck too with your new building
and like I said it, it is awesome.
319
:The yard was so spectacular and
I'm so glad that you can use
320
:it to help animals in need too.
321
:Nikki: Thank you so much and
thank you guys for having me.
322
:It really means a lot.
323
:Dixie: Yeah, I'm just trying to spread
the word and see if we can inspire other
324
:businesses to do something similar too.
325
:'cause I do think it's important.
326
:A lot of the times people go into business
and they just think about that money
327
:aspect of it and they don't involve the
other side of it, which is giving back.
328
:And I love that you do that.
329
:Nikki: Yeah.
330
:I tell people, I'm like, if you're
trying to start up a small business,
331
:to make money, you're in a wrong reason
I feel that way about a lot of things,
332
:but yeah, it's such an easy platform
to be out in the community and be seen
333
:it's really should be used for good.
334
:Dixie: Absolutely.
335
:That's it for today's
episode of Animal Posse.
336
:If you love what we're doing,
please consider becoming a member.
