Shownotes

Somewhere along the line, we forgot that business used to be about relationships. Relationship marketing wasn't a tactic back then, it was simply how deals happened, because people who knew people vouched for people they trusted. Then we built entire systems to replace it, and now we wonder why people buy once and bounce, and why none of it feels like it's compounding.

This is episode 4 of my summer predictions miniseries and it's all about, what I call, the off-market growth strategy. It's the thing the highest-priced, highest-earning businesses have been running on the whole time, and it's what I think we're about to see come back into play.

I'll talk about how to think of referral marketing as a business strategy, how to build business relationships in a meaningful way (while everyone else is trying to outsource it to AI), and the brand building strategies that will move your business ahead of everyone else's in 2027.

Topics covered on Relationship Marketing:

  1. How do premium businesses leverage building business relationships so their client list is always full?
  2. Premium brand positioning works on exclusivity rather than reach, and the private banking model that proves it.
  3. Why should you be doubling down on relationship marketing instead of trying to replace it with systems and AI?
  4. The brand building strategies the smartest businesses are already moving on to.

Transcripts

[00:00:26] So today I want to talk about what I call the off-market growth strategy of businesses that really stand out, that price highly, that earn a lot, and that have always been very focused on relationships. I want to look at what relationship marketing means now and how we can keep developing the scale of our businesses by getting some of these fundamentals back in place.

Before Funnels and Lead Magnets, People Bought From People They Trusted

[:

[00:01:16] It was not about how many Instagram followers you have or how many publications you have been featured in. We have got so caught up, in my view, so caught up chasing money, that we have built entire systems to replace the thing that used to happen, which was that we sold because we liked the person and we trusted the person.

How Established Businesses Win Clients Through Referral Marketing

[:

[00:01:57] It has been an introduction from the person they met at that dinner to somebody else, and it has this domino effect that they are consistently working. They are putting themselves in spaces to be connected with people who can introduce them to more people, and those are places of really high-quality conversation. That is referral marketing in its most original form.

Scale Gets You Reach But Relationships Get You Opportunities

[:

[00:02:44] We have incredible ways to reach millions of people. Social media, podcasts, press, and AI sitting over all of those. We have the opportunity for our businesses to go so much further than they ever could through a relationship alone. So we need both. It is not that we go back to only having solid relationships, it is asking where we have forgotten that relationship marketing sits at the core.

When You Scale Without Depth, You Just Scale Noise

[:

[00:05:09] You are scaling up ads with testimonials on them, but people do not really understand who they are buying into in the first place. When I look back at my career before I came into the online space, the thing I always saw in strong premium brand positioning was the ability to leverage relationships.

What Private Banks Like Coutts Understand About Premium Brand Positioning

[:

[00:05:55] You are invited to events built around networking and building business relationships with people who have similar lifestyles and similar ways of thinking, people who could also become your next business opportunities. Private banking is not going door by door asking, "Would you like to come and bank with Coutts?"

[:

[00:06:42] They are not putting all of their attention into how they scale, because the essence of their business is not scalability. It is exclusive, and it is making sure the clients who bank with them experience a really, really high level of service.

Why You Cannot Industrialise Trust

What I am seeing is that service-based businesses are trying to industrialise trust, because when we industrialise it, meaning when we put processes around it and make it more transactional, it can scale faster than if it were being built with you personally.

Brand Building Strategies That Make People Want to Be Associated With You

[:

[00:09:43] They want people to know they are working with you, because your premium brand positioning already gives you that credibility, and then you scale it. This is what I think is coming back into play. Scalability is incredible, and being able to reach millions of people is insane, but everybody has access to those tools.

AI Can Be Copied, Relationships Can’t.

[:

[00:10:26] That means whatever you scale always has something completely unique and original at its base. I do not know about you, but that is the way I prefer to build, and it has always been the way I have built.

What the Off Market Growth Strategy Means

So this is what I mean by the off-market strategy. I call it that because it is a bit like buying a house that never goes to market, which is how we bought our property. It was through a buying agent, so it was never listed on the market. We got the opportunity to come and see it because we had a relationship. That is one example. We hired those people to get us opportunities on off-market properties.

[:

[00:11:37] So if any of this has resonated with you, it is probably because you have felt it yourself. That pull between doing the visible thing everybody tells you to do, and trusting that the core fundamentals of building a business, the ones that are not always the sexiest things coming up on Instagram, are what have worked for you before and what can work for you again in a really powerful way.

Inside the Small Boardroom Space (Opening This Autumn)

[:

[00:12:38] It is not a mastermind. I have not quite figured out what to call it yet at the time of recording. It is more like a boardroom. It is where I am going to be leveraging my network and the opportunities I have been able to create, sharing within the space how I do this, and also using what I have built to help you in your own business and in your own opportunities.

[:

[00:13:38] Maybe you have just dropped out of trusting yourself in it. What you really need is somebody to reflect back what you are not seeing in yourself, the commercial opportunities you cannot see because you are so close to the business. Things you have not even thought about, where you go, "What? How could I do that?" That is how my brain works. But we cannot just have innovative ideas. We need a commercial strategy, and we need a network that makes this shit happen, and that is what I am very good at building. I have brought it in from time to time with my one-to-one clients and with my current clients in my mastermind, because I can see how good they are and I completely trust the relationship we are able to build and the opportunities that will come from it.

[:

[00:14:57] This is why I describe it more like a boardroom, because it is the partnership, the sounding board, and the network that often happens in these spaces and turns ideas into multi-million-pound businesses. That is what I am really good at doing.

Why This Space Is Invite Only and How to Reach Me

So if you are interested in knowing about this space, as I said, there is no application form you can go and fill in on my website.

[:

[00:16:10] If this has resonated with you, I would love to hear from you and have a discussion about where your vision is and how it aligns with this space, and go from there. You can send me a DM at rachelpearson.co. You can drop me a message on LinkedIn as well, and I cannot wait to have a conversation with those of you who honestly are going to be coming into one of the most innovative spaces out there. I do not see anybody else doing it this way at the level I am going to be doing it.
