Shownotes

What do you get when two ‘Zipper Brothers’—both survivors of open-heart surgery—sit down to talk? An episode filled with heart (pun intended), resilience, and a whole lot of wisdom. In this inspiring conversation, I’m joined by Ronn James, a 40-year real estate veteran, coach, and mentor who’s not only survived the operating table but also built a legacy of success and impact.

Ronn and I share a unique bond, having both gone under the knife and emerged stronger—literally, with scars to prove it. But beyond the shared experiences of surgery, we dive deep into what it takes to not just survive life’s toughest moments, but to thrive. Ronn brings wit, wisdom, and plenty of real talk as we explore:

  • The life lessons that only open-heart surgery can teach you.
  • How to build a sustainable business (and life) with passion and purpose.
  • The secret sauce to overcoming adversity and coming out stronger on the other side.

If you’ve ever needed a reminder that life’s greatest challenges can lead to its greatest triumphs, this episode is for you. Ronn’s story will leave you feeling inspired, motivated, and ready to take on whatever comes next—with a few laughs along the way. Trust me, you’ll want to hit download on this one.

Speaker:

2

:

we have got a fellow 'zipper brother' of mine

3

:

Ronn James another survivor of open heart surgery

4

:

and a man with

5

:

not just 40 years of unbelievable experience

6

:

a mentor a coach

7

:

all kinds of stories but spoiler alert

8

:

he even gets me singing on this episode

9

:

so you're welcome and I'm sorry all at the same time

10

:

this is just a number

11

:

Hello once again

12

:

it's Daniel here it's just a number

13

:

and I am pretty freaking excited today

14

:

to be joined by my special guest

15

:

I have Coach Ronn with me today

16

:

Ronn James

17

:

respected authority in the real estate industry

18

:

he's got a deep passion for helping others thrive

19

:

he's got 40 years of hands on experience

20

:

a track record of success

21

:

and you know what he's not just a coach

22

:

he's a mentor

23

:

and he's focused on growth and success of every client

24

:

now I've known Ronn

25

:

I've been getting to know Ronn

26

:

we are going to get to know Ronn a lot more today

27

:

he's got a story that goes back a couple years

28

:

couple more than me and that's a

29

:

that kind of lends itself well

30

:

to talking about how age is just a number

31

:

and how you can really take

32

:

you know a story

33

:

you can take wins you can take losses

34

:

you can be resilient and you can make an amazing career

35

:

and continue to power forward

36

:

I am so excited to learn more about how he blends

37

:

strategy how he blends compassion

38

:

how he empowers real estate professionals

39

:

how his coaching business has grown from a media career

40

:

this man is a media Mogul folks

41

:

and we're gonna learn all about that

42

:

uh and so I'm just really excited to

43

:

to speak to you I'm kind of

44

:

unexcited about continuing to talk about you

45

:

and not yet giving you the mic

46

:

so once again everybody

47

:

I'd like to welcome Ronn James

48

:

thanks for coming on the show

49

:

my absolute pleasure uh

50

:

this was uh

51

:

an honor as I've watched you

52

:

champion your journey over the last

53

:

year with your health at this point

54

:

I have become a big fan of you and your family

55

:

and certainly how you have pivoted

56

:

for something that was life altering

57

:

folks a bypass is not light surgery

58

:

it's not like going to the dentist

59

:

it's a pretty serious thing

60

:

so when I actually see people

61

:

go through that particular procedure

62

:

that process and then of course the recovery

63

:

I'm right there I

64

:

I wanna be their shadow just to remind them that

65

:

you know they can do it

66

:

they're gonna they're gonna get

67

:

they're gonna see the light at the end of the tunnel

68

:

and I promise it won't be a train yes

69

:

so I'm very very happy to be here

70

:

happy to be asked to this particular podcast

71

:

cause it's not just real estate focused

72

:

it's about life it's about the cool things that we do

73

:

and the uncool things that we do

74

:

and how to fix those absolutely

75

:

well and hey

76

:

it's it's

77

:

it's uh

78

:

poignant that you're wearing a zipper

79

:

cause we are zipper brothers haha

80

:

right so I

81

:

I should have

82

:

we are for those when the mother ship lands

83

:

if you're just listening to us right now

84

:

just know that I've got my zipper

85

:

it's just under my shirt right now as well

86

:

so yeah I know that's I

87

:

I appreciate that and

88

:

and you know what I think um

89

:

sometimes you know

90

:

the things that

91

:

that hit us in the wrong way lead to really good things

92

:

and I think us getting to know each other better

93

:

is one of those really nice outcomes

94

:

from what was kind of a a shitty experience

95

:

but it is what it is right

96

:

I think uh

97

:

like you said we come out better

98

:

and there is a light at the end of the tunnel this

99

:

this is part of it and you're definitely not a train

100

:

haha so uh

101

:

the question is

102

:

do you have an arm zipper or a leg zipper?

103

:

as well as the one on your chest

104

:

I've I've got an arm zipper

105

:

which is well hey

106

:

that really makes us brothers oh

107

:

you got mine mine is here

108

:

I don't know if the camera on my arm yes

109

:

it's there oh

110

:

and yeah it's there

111

:

uh yeah

112

:

no the arm zippers there

113

:

it's healing up nicely and uh yeah

114

:

no it's uh

115

:

it's been an interesting journey

116

:

I guess I'm now what

117

:

seven months removed and feeling good

118

:

feeling good so

119

:

so that was the scariest

120

:

scariest day of my life going in

121

:

knowing that you're going into theater

122

:

and you're gonna come out with new plumbing

123

:

and not knowing what that journey

124

:

over the next 24 hours is gonna look like

125

:

whether you're gonna see anybody that you love

126

:

ever again yeah

127

:

and even though they say oh

128

:

we do it all the time

129

:

it's like changing tires on my car

130

:

not to me that's right

131

:

that's right it's

132

:

it's the unknown and

133

:

I made a concerted effort

134

:

not to do any more research than I needed to

135

:

I didn't want Doctor Google to give me any

136

:

any unnecessary expectations of what could be

137

:

probably the better move not for everybody

138

:

I know it's important to know what you're getting into

139

:

but I don't know

140

:

I think people please heed Daniel's advice

141

:

I did watch the procedure

142

:

that was videotaped on YouTube

143

:

not mine but one like mine on a quad bypass

144

:

and had I would have seen that before

145

:

I was in theater at this point

146

:

I would have been even more nervous than I was going in

147

:

it is sick a team of

148

:

you know two

149

:

2 teams of three doctors

150

:

each working on you simultaneously

151

:

and it is pretty uh

152

:

pretty scary to see

153

:

when you watch a video of it after the fact

154

:

and I'm absolutely really happy

155

:

I didn't I

156

:

I I couldn't wait to be

157

:

it's strange and ironic

158

:

maybe that I wanted to go under as quick as possible

159

:

because I didn't want to be in that period of

160

:

of anticipation if that's the right word

161

:

nervous anticipation of what was to come

162

:

cause once you're under yeah

163

:

you wake up again and it's done

164

:

but until then it's a lot of curiosity

165

:

and a lot of worry for the people around you

166

:

as well I think I was the most anxious about

167

:

everybody who knew what I was going through

168

:

and was nervous for me you know

169

:

they care but it still

170

:

it increases your own nerves

171

:

when you know that people are

172

:

are kind of going through the scenarios in their head

173

:

as well it gets you thinking a little bit too much

174

:

and you never want to be alone with your thoughts

175

:

you want to be surrounded by

176

:

you know yeah

177

:

good vibes but you wanna be done

178

:

and we're done you know

179

:

and we are we made it

180

:

we are made it so

181

:

I have a story though

182

:

I have a story that's pretty poignant yeah

183

:

especially to you know just a number so uh

184

:

about a week before my surgery I had my kids out

185

:

we were at a diner having

186

:

you know burgers and fries cause you know

187

:

with the gravy if you're gonna have a bypass

188

:

make sure you get the full extent of it

189

:

log it as much as you can before they clear it yeah

190

:

oh yeah I was already there anyway

191

:

but you know

192

:

what's what's another little bit of poutine

193

:

that's um

194

:

and we were talking my kids and I

195

:

were talking about the fact that our local library

196

:

had just gotten a 3D printer

197

:

so we were talking cause we

198

:

we joke and we fool around and

199

:

and we were talking about all the crazy things

200

:

we would 3D print if we had a 3D printer at home

201

:

so it was like you know

202

:

bookcases and iPhone cases and that kind of idea

203

:

and then my 10 year old son looked at me and he said

204

:

I'd print you a new heart

205

:

so you don't have to go for the operation wow

206

:

done that's that's that's it done

207

:

done wow that is just

208

:

I'm sure it still chokes you a little bit

209

:

even thinking about it

210

:

that is just 100% gets me every time you know what

211

:

it's it's

212

:

it should never take such a life event

213

:

to remind us how much the people around us care for us

214

:

you know but hey

215

:

I mean those those are the moments that

216

:

I don't know the right way to put it

217

:

it doesn't it doesn't make it all worth it

218

:

that's the wrong way to put it

219

:

cause we'd rather

220

:

not have to go through it in the first place

221

:

but wow is that a

222

:

a really cool kind of byproduct of a bad situation

223

:

where you know

224

:

it reminds you

225

:

if you didn't already know how much your kids

226

:

you know care for you

227

:

love you and wanna see you okay

228

:

so that's awesome and yeah

229

:

I think we need to go find ourselves a 3D printer

230

:

and just start making

231

:

making hearts for people and bringing them out to

232

:

to folks let's do it

233

:

so how how long ago was that

234

:

it was over 10 years ago now right

235

:

it was yeah

236

:

just about 11 years um

237

:

and then I I did have a

238

:

a good friend a client and good friend

239

:

uh Rob McKichan

240

:

who's a

241

:

a TD mortgage specialist out of the Burlington area

242

:

um I had posted one of my anniversaries

243

:

I I can't remember which one it was

244

:

but um

245

:

he he corrected me

246

:

cause I had said it was the anniversary of my

247

:

my bypass and

248

:

you know it means a lot to me

249

:

cause it's not everybody gets a second chance

250

:

there's a lot of people on this planet that are here

251

:

just by luck and I'm one of them

252

:

you're one of them that's right

253

:

and uh

254

:

Rob basically said it's not an anniversary Celebration

255

:

it is a Life Day Celebration

256

:

it is the this day is bigger than your birthday

257

:

this is your second chance

258

:

your second round and it's yours to

259

:

you know grow and flourish or waste

260

:

so you decide what Life Day means to you

261

:

but it is your Life Day Celebration

262

:

and I know you and I've talked about it on

263

:

on text at this point in time that

264

:

you know

265

:

you're coming up to an anniversary in five months

266

:

um and it will certainly take over

267

:

you know uh

268

:

what your birthday means to you

269

:

your life day will be even bigger than that

270

:

absolutely so it

271

:

it really it

272

:

it's it's true when they say today's

273

:

you know the first day of the rest of your life

274

:

and we've got yes

275

:

we've gotta live every minute

276

:

that's a big reason this is here

277

:

this is a big reason we're talking to you about

278

:

you know your journey and how you continue to do that

279

:

I mean I

280

:

I'm not kidding when I say you're one of the

281

:

the most active whether it's social media

282

:

whether it's all these things

283

:

people might acquaint with

284

:

all that's on that's only for the teenagers right

285

:

that's all you know

286

:

I'm seeing I'm seeing constant engagement

287

:

um and it not only puts a smile on my face

288

:

but it reinforces how much effort

289

:

and how much you're really taking every day

290

:

for everything it's worth

291

:

and putting it out there and sharing uh

292

:

which is why it's so good to talk to you here today and

293

:

and to learn more about where you've been and

294

:

and what got you to where you are and

295

:

and where you're going cause like you said

296

:

this is you know

297

:

every day is a life day now right

298

:

and it should be for everybody absolutely

299

:

you don't need bypass surgery to

300

:

to feel that way yeah

301

:

uh and

302

:

and so many people you know

303

:

don't get those those chances so

304

:

you know when I get a chance to

305

:

you know not have people go through a bypass

306

:

just to kind of be appreciative of gratitude for

307

:

you know the rest of their life at this point

308

:

but it's like let's put you in that position

309

:

and when you realize like

310

:

I'm older than you at this point

311

:

there is a best before date

312

:

like it's it comes to an end

313

:

so the point of that situation is

314

:

what do you do with the rest of your life

315

:

that's right like uh

316

:

you know one of the

317

:

I'm gonna pivot here if you don't mind um

318

:

as a coach I'm

319

:

I'm great and I have been doing it for years

320

:

helping people build a business plan

321

:

they can tell me what they're gonna do on the day

322

:

12 months from now three years from now

323

:

five years from now in some cases 10 years from now

324

:

I have people that

325

:

are that far out advanced at this point

326

:

that they can tell me you know

327

:

in 2035 on Christmas what they're doing with who

328

:

where and when at this point however

329

:

when I take their career

330

:

so if it happens to be real estate

331

:

if I take I say okay

332

:

this is the last day you can talk about real estate

333

:

as of tomorrow you know nothing

334

:

I'm I

335

:

I blank you like you know

336

:

men in black and you know nothing about your career

337

:

and people kind of well

338

:

then I'll live for my kids excellent

339

:

your kids are all married

340

:

they're all settled they all have their own lives

341

:

you did good mom and dad right

342

:

here you go what's left

343

:

what's the life business plan

344

:

I've never written one

345

:

I can tell you what I might be able to do next Tuesday

346

:

but if you ask me a month from now

347

:

I don't know I have nothing past next Tuesday

348

:

and even at that's a stretch cause what do I do

349

:

who am I I was defined by a career for most of my life

350

:

so in this particular case

351

:

when you have a reset like we've had right

352

:

and you don't need like you said

353

:

a bypass surgery to reset your

354

:

you know your frame of reference

355

:

but the point of that situation is

356

:

what does the rest of your life look like

357

:

you know I

358

:

I they call it the Zen

359

:

you know Zen wittiness right

360

:

it's from The Shawshank Redemption

361

:

I'm stealing that from Brian Buffini

362

:

that's his favorite movie

363

:

but he talks about the fact that this guy

364

:

Andy Dufresne one of the main characters in the film

365

:

right

366

:

he's not living for prison

367

:

like he might be there for 20 years

368

:

40 years he's planning for when he's out

369

:

when it's his life when it's his time

370

:

and it's very indelible

371

:

so what's our indelible life plan

372

:

I've I've never built one

373

:

I've never built a vision board for life

374

:

I've done them always for business

375

:

but I'll tell you

376

:

I'm pretty keen on doing them for life

377

:

I would love to do some kind of workshop on

378

:

let's build a life plan and it yes

379

:

it has actuaries and yes it's got dates

380

:

and yes it's got goals

381

:

and yes it's got milestones

382

:

cause it should

383

:

right but that's it

384

:

you're right you've got to look beyond the immediate

385

:

what everybody tells you

386

:

is the way you're supposed to plan

387

:

cause that's not really the way it is and

388

:

and I think people out there need to take a step back

389

:

and look at the big picture

390

:

we're we're with

391

:

for everybody just joining us

392

:

we're with coach Ron Ron James plus the truth

393

:

he's here this is uh it's

394

:

it's kind of a good segue here

395

:

into talking about how you got into coaching

396

:

I mean you just dropped some

397

:

some really deep stuff that when we think about coaches

398

:

in any type of business I think to your point

399

:

people immediately jump to the okay

400

:

I wanna make a quarter million dollars next year

401

:

you know I'd like my marketing plan to be more sound

402

:

yada yada yada

403

:

but you're right

404

:

I don't think it's very typical

405

:

that they peel back the layers of what really

406

:

lies beyond the immediate

407

:

stuff that you could maybe find in a textbook

408

:

so what got you is it sort of life events of yours

409

:

that got you into coaching

410

:

have you always been interested in that

411

:

and in bringing people to their best selves

412

:

and making them think a little bit deeper

413

:

uh the answer is yes

414

:

and it was a road of discovery

415

:

so I I want to just maybe

416

:

perhaps touch on something before I pivot on that is

417

:

I just got off a coaching call

418

:

where a business owner worked very

419

:

very hard uh

420

:

put in personnel

421

:

to offload a lot of the responsibilities

422

:

the day to day responsibilities and if you will

423

:

the administrative tasks that were bogging her down

424

:

and it freed up a six hour window of time for her

425

:

and her plight with that is

426

:

what do I do with the 6 hours right

427

:

and sadly for me cause as a coach

428

:

I know what she's gonna do with the 6 hours

429

:

she's gonna go back and reengineer

430

:

all the things that she just

431

:

engineered to put in place

432

:

she's gonna micromanage everybody doing their

433

:

job that she hired them to do

434

:

and told them how to do it

435

:

and she's gonna go back in and try to

436

:

fix it with her free 6 hours

437

:

you know interesting

438

:

cause I'm I'm a new passion guy for car camping

439

:

and I'm on a bunch of Facebook sites

440

:

of people who go camping

441

:

so whether you camp in a tent or a trailer

442

:

or whatever the case is

443

:

here's the saddest thing that I see on those posts hey

444

:

we're all excited we bought all this new gear

445

:

Amazon has got our credit card on speed dial

446

:

at this point in time we're up at you know

447

:

the Piney Park with our 3 and 5 year old

448

:

what do we do

449

:

how do you keep a 3 and a 5 year old

450

:

entertained for a weekend

451

:

and it's like

452

:

that is the saddest story I've ever heard

453

:

because they don't know how to play

454

:

and the reason why

455

:

we're very good at scheduling ourselves

456

:

because people said if you're idle hands

457

:

you're lazy so we've decided to kind of

458

:

you know bequeath that to our children oh

459

:

they got soccer here

460

:

but we got to be back by 6 cause they got Coomand

461

:

then they have a piano lessons after that

462

:

so it's like oh great

463

:

we've taken our business model

464

:

and the fact that we just kind of energize ourselves

465

:

and now inflicted it on our children fantastic right

466

:

when is there that time for play

467

:

because they forgot you forgot

468

:

that's right

469

:

but they have generators and big screen TVs

470

:

so bring the Xbox

471

:

and we'll do it in front of the campfire

472

:

that's right the machine has grown

473

:

they've got their process

474

:

but where's the creativity

475

:

where's the spontaneity things like that

476

:

I I had the pleasure of meeting a 10 year old kid

477

:

this past weekend on my my

478

:

my first official car camp

479

:

where I was on a raw piece of land

480

:

and my Kent was on my car

481

:

and here we go I meet Austin

482

:

Austin's 10 years old and I'm watching

483

:

I'm like Austin what grade are you in

484

:

he's like Grade 4 and I'm like

485

:

alright excellent

486

:

I said what's your favorite subject

487

:

he said science

488

:

not on that you know

489

:

a little unusual for a 10 year old boy to say science

490

:

and I'm like what do you like about science

491

:

he goes it's science

492

:

it's like yeah

493

:

I guess yeah

494

:

it really is

495

:

it's a good point and you're not you're not wrong

496

:

so uh it's funny

497

:

I'm watching uh Austin and Austin's gonna build a fire

498

:

so he's gathering rocks

499

:

he's making the pit right's get all the sticks

500

:

he's got he's got a real good fire game going

501

:

and I'm like Austin I'm really impressed brother

502

:

you've got this thing down

503

:

I'm like you know

504

:

does your family camp

505

:

and is this where you've Learned this

506

:

he goes come on man

507

:

outdoor boys

508

:

and I had just been introduced to it the day before

509

:

so Outdoor Boys is a YouTube channel

510

:

a guy who lives up in Alaska

511

:

he's a lawyer but he is he is he's Jeremiah Johnson

512

:

like he is a woodsman right

513

:

he is a bushcraft hunter fisher

514

:

like he does this for real

515

:

and his channels are really entertaining

516

:

but he's got three young boys

517

:

and they all come with him

518

:

so they're all being exposed to this situation as well

519

:

nature and what nature has to offer

520

:

so I said really you watch Outdoor Boys

521

:

and he goes well you know

522

:

I get up and it's like a Saturday morning

523

:

and I'm kind of bored

524

:

so I go watch what they have on the on the channel

525

:

and they say hey

526

:

today we're gonna kind of you know

527

:

on this 30 minute episode

528

:

we're gonna go build a fort at this point

529

:

so I watch the video

530

:

and then I get my ass going and I go build a fort

531

:

that's exactly word for word

532

:

what 10 year old Austin told me amazing

533

:

and he lit the fire you know

534

:

one match in the whole thing just like perfect

535

:

and I'm like Austin that was amazing

536

:

and he's he's got this knife and

537

:

and it's this really ominous looking knife

538

:

and he goes it's not sharp

539

:

and I'm like it looks crazy sharp

540

:

he goes you couldn't an idiot couldn't cut your hand

541

:

I'm like you haven't met me haha yeah

542

:

let's try so I'm like

543

:

could you sharpen it he said

544

:

I could

545

:

but that would kind of conflict with my other knife

546

:

and I'm like oh

547

:

you have another knife he goes

548

:

oh I have a camp knife

549

:

and I'm like all right

550

:

I'm like do you know how to sharpen the camp knife

551

:

he goes of course

552

:

I'm like when did you learn to sharpen your knife

553

:

he goes when I was 4

554

:

I said I Learned yesterday

555

:

right I'm 63

556

:

he's 10 right

557

:

he wins

558

:

and I'm like hey

559

:

uh haha Austin

560

:

can you spit in this cup I want to sell your DNA

561

:

and sprinkle it on other people's children haha

562

:

honestly like he

563

:

he had it dialed in like

564

:

he didn't need the external world

565

:

to tell him how to live a life

566

:

he decided to kind of get off his ass

567

:

his words right

568

:

and figure it out for himself yep

569

:

like holy crap man

570

:

I really I need your story

571

:

well you know what I

572

:

I find curiosity is

573

:

is a dying quality in a lot of people

574

:

and he seemed to have that and still has it

575

:

like that drives you to learn to ask questions

576

:

to not do what everyone else is doing

577

:

and that's uh

578

:

I kind of wanna meet Austin

579

:

I kind of wanna go camping with Austin haha

580

:

I feel like you could help me out too

581

:

I don't know if we're worthy

582

:

yeah I know

583

:

it's true he

584

:

he he could be our camp leader maybe maybe

585

:

oh for sure

586

:

for sure we're giving him the whistle

587

:

honestly so

588

:

so what do you do to to stay ahead of the game and

589

:

you know whether it's through curiosity

590

:

whether it's just trying to keep yourself

591

:

always learning like do

592

:

do you find that that's what drives you

593

:

is just to stay curious and like the car camping

594

:

like where did that come from for you

595

:

well and

596

:

and you know

597

:

interestingly enough you're right

598

:

so

599

:

uh the revelation of

600

:

you know it is uh

601

:

this is your life day this is the second chapter

602

:

this is the second chance

603

:

so uh

604

:

you know we

605

:

I've done a few things in the last couple of years

606

:

that have really just focused me

607

:

so uh

608

:

I got married a couple years ago to my lovely bride

609

:

and we went to Greece on our uh holiday

610

:

she's Greek and we went to Sparta

611

:

which is her family's village

612

:

although she's never been back

613

:

and none of her siblings have at this point

614

:

that's where her parents were from

615

:

they both since passed at this point

616

:

so we were there for really for about a 10 day junket

617

:

and because we're both real estate agents

618

:

and

619

:

I swore that I would never marry a real estate agent

620

:

but here we are who knew

621

:

um

622

:

who knew yes

623

:

and so we got there and we were looking at real estate

624

:

her uncle was the the the driver

625

:

you know

626

:

you can come out here and buy something for 25,000 yeah

627

:

missing a zero there champ anyway

628

:

so we saw an apartment fell in love and we bought it

629

:

now it's still two years and we're not closed

630

:

so

631

:

Greek real estate is a little different than Toronto

632

:

real estate

633

:

and she's my lovely wife Antonia

634

:

Andonia for all the Greeks that are on the call uh

635

:

she said why do you wanna do this

636

:

I'm like your uncle took me for a walk

637

:

and 10 minutes away from where we have a condo now

638

:

right we walked to this park and the

639

:

the road

640

:

went from a road with sidewalks on either side

641

:

down to just a road down to a dirt road

642

:

down to a path and all of this in about 10 minutes

643

:

and we get into this park

644

:

it's gated at this point

645

:

there's a woman in in that's sitting on a lawn chair

646

:

she speaks Greek to the Uncle Theo and uh

647

:

we're walking through

648

:

and I see a sign written in Greek and English called

649

:

you know Acropolis and I'm like no

650

:

no Acropolis is in in Athens anyway

651

:

we walk and I'm starting to see ruins

652

:

like

653

:

columns that are broken and just lying on the ground

654

:

and amongst the grass et cetera and I

655

:

he comes up and he stops and we're on these

656

:

you know kind of broken

657

:

what look like tiles that

658

:

are big slabs of stone and granite and stuff like this

659

:

and I'm like what the hell is this

660

:

and he said this is Sparta I'm like okay yeah

661

:

I've seen the movie he goes no no

662

:

this

663

:

this is it where the guy says that we're right there

664

:

it's actually it like we are right where he said it

665

:

you know 25 years ago and I'm like

666

:

what what are you what are you talking about

667

:

and he goes yeah I'm like

668

:

I can see your house from here and uh he said yeah

669

:

he said 10 minutes down the road 5,000 years ago

670

:

like actually 25 years ago to be exact at this point

671

:

were Leonidas stood there and said

672

:

this is Sparta wow interesting

673

:

when you're sitting in your condo

674

:

watching the movie 300 and they ride into Sparta

675

:

and I pause the film as they're riding in

676

:

kind of going where the TV is

677

:

is like 10 minutes from this balcony

678

:

I'm liking it

679

:

that's this real juxtaposition of you know

680

:

where things are so my wife she asked me she said

681

:

why would you buy a property in in Greece

682

:

especially Sparta I'm like

683

:

you're related to a third of the city

684

:

like literally if there's 25,000 people

685

:

you're related to personally 8,000 of them

686

:

so we kind of get our own fan base here

687

:

but number two is right outside my apartment

688

:

right outside my apartment

689

:

like literally across the street where there should be

690

:

somebody else's house

691

:

is a building that's set of ruins that's 25 years old

692

:

I've watched for the last two years

693

:

an archaeological team take it apart

694

:

like dig it bring it down

695

:

bring up all of the stuff

696

:

and I'm fascinated by it riveted to the whole process

697

:

and I went down and I spoke to the archaeologist

698

:

who's a woman

699

:

and I'm like oh

700

:

my god this is

701

:

you know I'm from Canada

702

:

this is like looking at the moon close up

703

:

like we have we have zero reference point

704

:

the oldest you know

705

:

piece of the oldest building in North America

706

:

not including Mexico is 450 years old

707

:

you know it's like 450 years old in Quebec City

708

:

our oldest city in Canada

709

:

and she goes 450

710

:

she goes

711

:

we have streets where they're thousands of years old

712

:

and they're still standing and still

713

:

you know habitable and

714

:

and our people's residences

715

:

and she said for sure 600

716

:

you know years old is new

717

:

and it's like wow

718

:

and she said did you notice anything

719

:

looking down from your balcony about this dig

720

:

and I'm like what's the pipe at the back

721

:

she said indoor plumbing

722

:

this is Roman built 25 years ago with indoor plumbing

723

:

I'm like are you kidding

724

:

and she said nope

725

:

and she said by the way

726

:

to you it's the moon

727

:

to me it's Tuesday

728

:

I have several of these sites going on

729

:

at any given time at this point in time

730

:

this is just what I do like to her it was nothing to me

731

:

it was mythical yeah

732

:

so my point is I'm like alright

733

:

I'm 63 I might have 20 years left in the planet

734

:

maybe less with my heart issue at this point in time

735

:

and it's like I wanna die with an adventure

736

:

I wanna die with someone saying

737

:

what the hell is he up to now

738

:

that's what I wanna do at this point

739

:

and that curiosity has pulled it out

740

:

I you know started paddle boarding two years ago

741

:

fell in love with the sport right

742

:

do it I live in Welland

743

:

so I'm surrounded by canals and waterways

744

:

so I paddle board a lot am I really good at it

745

:

no but do I really love it

746

:

yep does it like me

747

:

depends on the day

748

:

but it gives me something at this point

749

:

to do something that I can't do on my own

750

:

somebody says hey

751

:

we're gonna go and just sit and do nothing

752

:

and listen to nothing

753

:

yeah

754

:

a little hard for a guy with ADHD at this point in time

755

:

who is used to programming every microsecond of his day

756

:

to do nothing is beyond my scope of comprehension

757

:

paddle boarding puts me in that space

758

:

just kind of goes you can only be one with the water

759

:

hopefully out of it instead of in of it

760

:

that's it at this point

761

:

and then then the car camping and where that came from

762

:

is my good friend fellow realtor Dave Chomitz

763

:

he retired out West Vernon

764

:

BC and he bought a sprinter van

765

:

not I think the Dodge version of it

766

:

not the Mercedes version of it

767

:

just as a work van and he had tricked it all out

768

:

and Dave's a millwright by trade

769

:

so his van is literally the millennial Falcon it it is

770

:

it's got all these he can

771

:

you know live off this thing if there's an apocalypse

772

:

Dave's good for like a next month at this point

773

:

and he's just worked on this van and he

774

:

he uh

775

:

the beginning of the summer mid summer I get a call hey

776

:

uh you wanna meet for coffee

777

:

I'm like I'm not in Vernon BC and he said neither am I

778

:

I'm in Cobourg uh

779

:

but I'm gonna come in on this particular date

780

:

and we can have breakfast alright

781

:

fair enough so I asked him where's your wife

782

:

he said oh still in Cobourg

783

:

I said

784

:

you drove from Cobourg to have breakfast with me

785

:

in Burlington and he said

786

:

hell no he said

787

:

I like you not that much he said I'm staying local

788

:

I'm like where

789

:

he said Bronte Creek Provincial Park I'm like

790

:

that's a trailer park and he said

791

:

and I have a trailer or a van so he said

792

:

what I do is I line up all my

793

:

my dates

794

:

cause I still have a bunch of people I love to see

795

:

and come to visit when I'm here

796

:

I just bring my

797

:

my bedroom on wheels with me wherever I go

798

:

so I can go into the middle of the city like Bronte

799

:

you know Bronte Creek Provincial Park and set up space

800

:

so I have a breakfast with you I have a lunch with

801

:

you know somebody else

802

:

and I have a dinner with somebody else on the way out

803

:

at that point I'm like really

804

:

and he goes

805

:

when you have a bedroom on wheels

806

:

you can go wherever you want

807

:

he said when I go to Vancouver weirdly enough

808

:

and it's just kind of you know historic

809

:

they have a trailer park

810

:

right in the middle of Vancouver

811

:

so I book a spot there and for 40 bucks

812

:

I can stay per night right in downtown Vancouver

813

:

in my own bed

814

:

so to speak because I built the damn thing yeah

815

:

so he said

816

:

I can go to places that most people can't go

817

:

or afford to go in my van of action

818

:

that's what he calls it that's the website

819

:

that's the YouTube channel Van of action right

820

:

it's Dave Thomas so

821

:

we actually have a camping date

822

:

coming up in the next week or two

823

:

where Dave and I are gonna go sleep out

824

:

sleep over

825

:

right on I can't wait

826

:

and you got

827

:

you got you got to invite Austin if he's available

828

:

oh I I wish yeah

829

:

if he's um

830

:

but you know and it's funny because my son is 20

831

:

he's military has been for about the last four years

832

:

he just shakes his head

833

:

he thinks the old man's just lost it at this point

834

:

he's like

835

:

I could take you to Canadian Tire for 100 bucks

836

:

and you could sleep outside

837

:

he said you wouldn't last

838

:

but you could do it and I'm like yeah

839

:

well I have a car

840

:

I can have more stuff than that

841

:

he said you have a bunch of shit that

842

:

you know you don't even need to camp you

843

:

you're gonna cut yourself on the packaging

844

:

let alone the sharp bits at this point

845

:

so he's like you are the worst car camp candidate ever

846

:

yeah I'll show you

847

:

I'll show you he said

848

:

I'll take you camping

849

:

but we're leaving the damn car behind

850

:

and it's like uh

851

:

you'll never see me again

852

:

hopefully this is got you know

853

:

some kind of legacy video here

854

:

this is it this

855

:

this lives on yeah

856

:

exactly forever for everybody

857

:

like let let this be in memory of Coach Ronn

858

:

yes he's

859

:

he's great he was great while he was here

860

:

and he went on that last car trip and it was

861

:

went out smiling um

862

:

but yeah so we're here with coach Ronn

863

:

Ronn James and we are talking all things

864

:

we are talking car camping

865

:

we are talking paddle boarding and uh

866

:

you know it's interesting when you talk about even

867

:

even the paddle boarding it reminds me about something

868

:

uh part of this recovery I'm going through as they

869

:

they get me in with a social worker

870

:

and we have some talks about stuff right

871

:

um one of the things that she talks about is

872

:

something that's always been a bit of a

873

:

a weird thing for me

874

:

cause I haven't been able to wrap my head around it

875

:

which is mindfulness because I'm not a meditator

876

:

I'm not somebody who can be alone with my thoughts

877

:

too much

878

:

but she brought up something really interesting

879

:

which is as you know you're a guitarist

880

:

I'm a drummer

881

:

which is something we haven't even talked about yet um

882

:

but she pointed out to me that if I'm when I'm drumming

883

:

she said that's mindfulness

884

:

she said that is when you're in your thing

885

:

and you're just kind of lost in not being

886

:

kind of taken aback by the world around you

887

:

everyone's got their own version

888

:

like meditation is not what people picture of them

889

:

sitting and kind of closing their eyes um

890

:

kind of thing and that really opened my eyes to

891

:

almost appreciating the things we do

892

:

that we love a little bit more

893

:

that it's not just a hobby

894

:

it's actually a way to kind of re center ourselves and

895

:

and and disassociate ourselves from the noise

896

:

that surrounds us all the time

897

:

like do you when you go paddle boarding

898

:

I don't know if if

899

:

if maybe that's a little bit too leading of a question

900

:

but is that sort of an element of

901

:

when you're doing these things

902

:

or when you're playing guitar

903

:

like do you find that

904

:

that helps you kind of get away from everything

905

:

or is that

906

:

not something you've ever found to be a problem

907

:

in the first place no

908

:

no always

909

:

you know it's interesting

910

:

at 63 there was no such thing as adult ADHD

911

:

we didn't even know what the hell ADHD was

912

:

add that kind of situation

913

:

that moniker it was for kids yep

914

:

and uh

915

:

for me you know

916

:

I went like

917

:

that's how the whole heart thing kind of came about

918

:

my son was diagnosed with ADHD

919

:

I mean if your pencil falls off your desk

920

:

at this point in school oh

921

:

you're ADHD

922

:

so they're really quick to medicate children and

923

:

and put them into program

924

:

put them on a spectrum and and rightfully so

925

:

I mean I'm sure they

926

:

you know uh

927

:

they deserve to be there

928

:

and way to go for early detection however

929

:

it comes with a whole bunch more confusion um

930

:

in my case I wanted to follow my son's journey

931

:

he was 6 when he was diagnosed at this point

932

:

and I'm like you know

933

:

I think I have this my wife thinks I have this

934

:

like put me on the same smarties you're gonna give him

935

:

and that's how I went to a psychiatrist and he's like

936

:

oh yeah for sure you're raging ADHD for sure

937

:

you're like you're the poster child

938

:

so he said but you know

939

:

you're a you know

940

:

early 50 year old you know

941

:

fat white guy and uh

942

:

this will kill you if I give you these med meds

943

:

these medications so

944

:

you go get a cardiologist to sign off

945

:

that I'm not gonna take you out

946

:

and we're good to go and the cardiologist

947

:

you know a very long story short right

948

:

he looked at me blessed the pills

949

:

I started taking

950

:

the same medication that you take for ADHD

951

:

as my son was taking at this point in time

952

:

and literally in 3 months

953

:

my cardiologist fired me

954

:

part of the firing process was a little bit more in

955

:

in depth invasive

956

:

making sure they did little checks and balances

957

:

and in the checks and balances

958

:

they found out that there was a blockage

959

:

turned out to be five arteries I have

960

:

and all of them were deathly blocked

961

:

and it was a fluke

962

:

was the fluke everybody that was involved

963

:

all of the specialists all the team

964

:

my surgeon they were like

965

:

how did you know and my cardiologist went

966

:

was a hunch was a guess

967

:

wow we

968

:

we we lucked out

969

:

and you wouldn't have seen him in the first place

970

:

if it wasn't for the referral from the wow

971

:

yeah hundred percent

972

:

the world works in very mysterious ways

973

:

doesn't it yes

974

:

yes it does

975

:

and like I said who knew

976

:

my son's illness right would be what saved me

977

:

and he couldn't print me a heart

978

:

but boy did he save my life 100%

979

:

so yeah but to your point so uh

980

:

you know I've always kind of been dabbling uh

981

:

you know with music from the time I was about 9

982

:

my mom stuck a guitar in my hand

983

:

and the only reason why I never understood

984

:

her kind of zeal for making me a guitar player

985

:

um and I'm a

986

:

I'm a I'm a three chord campfire guitar player

987

:

a good one but that's where I am

988

:

I you know I don't play lead so to speak

989

:

uh my my biological father I'm I'm adopted from

990

:

you know at age of 4

991

:

but my biological father is a country western

992

:

on the Canadian charts

993

:

he's a you know known guy Ross Allen is his name

994

:

and uh

995

:

they were my mom was a groupie apparently I guess

996

:

and you know I'm part of the groupie crowd now

997

:

but um all the way through

998

:

I was always kind of picking up the guitar

999

:

I I did it just to meet girls

:

00:37:04,433 --> 00:37:06,400

cause that's what you do when you're a guitar player

:

00:37:06,666 --> 00:37:08,566

um when I was thirty

:

00:37:09,366 --> 00:37:12,100

I met a man who played in a bar and and you know

:

00:37:12,100 --> 00:37:14,400

if you watch the movie I think it's called uh

:

00:37:14,533 --> 00:37:19,766

Broken Heart with um Bo Bridges are Jeff Bridges

:

00:37:19,766 --> 00:37:21,000

excuse me his brother

:

00:37:21,033 --> 00:37:23,100

Jeff Bridges plays this kind of broken down old

:

00:37:23,100 --> 00:37:24,500

country guy who's

:

00:37:24,500 --> 00:37:26,300

you know an alcoholic and stuff

:

00:37:26,300 --> 00:37:28,533

that's the guy I met him I I

:

00:37:28,533 --> 00:37:30,366

I met you know

:

00:37:30,366 --> 00:37:33,233

a real life incarnation of that character

:

00:37:33,700 --> 00:37:34,733

when I was 30 years old

:

00:37:34,733 --> 00:37:38,466

who played music in a little tiny bar in Pickering

:

00:37:38,633 --> 00:37:42,133

I lived on a boat at the end of my dock was that bar

:

00:37:42,666 --> 00:37:44,533

so I would go in there Friday nights

:

00:37:44,533 --> 00:37:47,533

and I would be just singing my ass off

:

00:37:47,533 --> 00:37:49,133

to this guy's set list at

:

00:37:49,133 --> 00:37:50,166

to the point where I'm sure they're like

:

00:37:50,166 --> 00:37:50,633

hey man

:

00:37:50,633 --> 00:37:51,733

drink your beer and shut up

:

00:37:51,733 --> 00:37:53,300

like keep it down over there

:

00:37:53,300 --> 00:37:54,100

honestly

:

00:37:54,900 --> 00:37:56,133

he was my mentor

:

00:37:56,133 --> 00:37:59,500

I actually had breakfast with him every day for a year

:

00:37:59,500 --> 00:38:03,833

he taught me how to be a bar entertainer

:

00:38:03,833 --> 00:38:05,100

he never taught me a song

:

00:38:05,100 --> 00:38:07,600

it wasn't like this is how you play Brown Eyed Girl

:

00:38:07,733 --> 00:38:10,066

but he taught me how to be an entertainer

:

00:38:10,066 --> 00:38:13,433

I had breakfast with the guy every day for 365 days

:

00:38:13,566 --> 00:38:15,200

we had breakfast together

:

00:38:16,066 --> 00:38:19,100

and he taught me about our life

:

00:38:19,100 --> 00:38:19,933

weirdly enough

:

00:38:19,933 --> 00:38:23,233

he played on my biological father's first album

:

00:38:24,500 --> 00:38:26,133

before you had ever met him

:

00:38:26,300 --> 00:38:27,266

before I had ever met him

:

00:38:27,266 --> 00:38:28,300

yeah when he was a kid

:

00:38:28,300 --> 00:38:30,000

like he was like uh

:

00:38:30,133 --> 00:38:31,700

he kind of quit school in Grade 10

:

00:38:31,700 --> 00:38:34,533

so he's like a 15 16 year old kid playing piano

:

00:38:34,533 --> 00:38:40,533

like drums he's a drummer by craft who could play keys

:

00:38:40,733 --> 00:38:43,066

who was also an amazing guitar player

:

00:38:43,066 --> 00:38:44,700

bass player et cetera

:

00:38:44,700 --> 00:38:46,533

if it had strings or keys

:

00:38:46,533 --> 00:38:49,733

he could play it and self taught

:

00:38:49,733 --> 00:38:51,433

no music education like

:

00:38:51,433 --> 00:38:53,933

he doesn't have a degree from anywhere at this point

:

00:38:53,933 --> 00:38:55,200

he just had a talent

:

00:38:55,733 --> 00:38:58,633

so I Learned you know

:

00:38:58,633 --> 00:39:00,066

how to entertain in a bar

:

00:39:00,066 --> 00:39:04,166

so I was a paid to play musician for 30 years

:

00:39:04,700 --> 00:39:08,100

and while I was doing all of my other career work

:

00:39:08,100 --> 00:39:09,533

so uh

:

00:39:09,533 --> 00:39:10,666

whether it was uh

:

00:39:10,766 --> 00:39:12,633

real estate and then

:

00:39:12,633 --> 00:39:16,533

I spent 10 years in the financial services industry

:

00:39:16,666 --> 00:39:18,366

as a coach as a specialist

:

00:39:18,366 --> 00:39:21,566

as a Realtor I'm working with mortgage people because

:

00:39:21,566 --> 00:39:23,733

who are their clients realtors

:

00:39:23,866 --> 00:39:26,466

who don't they know how to talk to realtors

:

00:39:26,466 --> 00:39:28,466

my job was to teach them how to talk to realtors

:

00:39:28,466 --> 00:39:30,066

how to actually get involved

:

00:39:30,066 --> 00:39:31,566

to become a partner with a Realtor

:

00:39:31,566 --> 00:39:33,866

as opposed to just servicing them right

:

00:39:33,866 --> 00:39:37,133

so a lot of that was coaching

:

00:39:37,300 --> 00:39:40,366

bankers on how to work with entrepreneurs

:

00:39:41,066 --> 00:39:42,933

so and I loved it

:

00:39:42,933 --> 00:39:45,333

it was it was a handmade career for me

:

00:39:45,333 --> 00:39:46,500

I love you know

:

00:39:46,500 --> 00:39:48,233

to tell stories I love to educate

:

00:39:48,233 --> 00:39:49,366

I love to teach

:

00:39:49,533 --> 00:39:51,966

that comes through the entertainment side as well

:

00:39:51,966 --> 00:39:57,200

from being a musician but the music was the Yin Yang

:

00:39:57,300 --> 00:40:00,533

it was the juxtaposition from corporate blue suit

:

00:40:00,533 --> 00:40:04,333

bank world to entertaining on stage

:

00:40:04,333 --> 00:40:06,433

and I tried to blend the two together

:

00:40:06,433 --> 00:40:08,533

they don't always work but when they did

:

00:40:08,533 --> 00:40:10,233

they were absolute magic

:

00:40:10,933 --> 00:40:11,900

people said I

:

00:40:11,900 --> 00:40:14,266

I thought you were an asshole when I when I

:

00:40:14,266 --> 00:40:15,866

you know saw you training in the bank

:

00:40:15,866 --> 00:40:18,166

and then I heard you play and all of a sudden

:

00:40:18,166 --> 00:40:20,900

I'm your biggest fan now you got street cred

:

00:40:20,900 --> 00:40:22,633

I take it all back yeah

:

00:40:22,633 --> 00:40:23,433

I go man

:

00:40:23,433 --> 00:40:24,166

it's uh

:

00:40:24,166 --> 00:40:24,533

you know it's

:

00:40:24,533 --> 00:40:26,500

it's interesting that you know

:

00:40:26,500 --> 00:40:27,466

not in every case

:

00:40:27,466 --> 00:40:30,366

but I'm a firm believer that all these things we do and

:

00:40:30,366 --> 00:40:33,566

and the willingness to just jump into stuff

:

00:40:33,566 --> 00:40:35,100

because you only live once

:

00:40:35,100 --> 00:40:35,933

and because you know

:

00:40:35,933 --> 00:40:38,666

there's opportunity and maybe even slight interest

:

00:40:38,666 --> 00:40:42,166

like when something even slightly interests me

:

00:40:42,166 --> 00:40:43,633

I at least want to taste test

:

00:40:43,633 --> 00:40:45,666

even just to learn that I don't like it

:

00:40:45,733 --> 00:40:49,233

and in a lot of cases in almost every case

:

00:40:49,833 --> 00:40:53,966

it may not be a direct line or link to the next thing

:

00:40:53,966 --> 00:40:55,866

or to whatever you know your

:

00:40:55,866 --> 00:40:59,066

your career path is or things like that

:

00:40:59,066 --> 00:41:02,833

but you've totally touched on the fact that there is

:

00:41:03,033 --> 00:41:06,066

there's no mutual exclusivity from anything that you do

:

00:41:06,066 --> 00:41:08,366

right whether music in a bar

:

00:41:08,533 --> 00:41:11,066

seems a world away from coaching

:

00:41:11,066 --> 00:41:13,566

mortgage professionals and how to speak to realtors

:

00:41:14,366 --> 00:41:15,266

I I

:

00:41:15,266 --> 00:41:17,700

I'm sure you could connect any two phases

:

00:41:17,700 --> 00:41:19,633

or experiences in your life

:

00:41:19,633 --> 00:41:22,266

in one way or another whether it's direct

:

00:41:22,266 --> 00:41:23,366

or whether it's just sort of

:

00:41:23,366 --> 00:41:26,000

in theory of things you Learned along the way

:

00:41:26,233 --> 00:41:27,166

and that's

:

00:41:27,933 --> 00:41:29,566

to me that's such an interesting thing

:

00:41:29,566 --> 00:41:30,933

as I learn more about people

:

00:41:30,933 --> 00:41:32,900

I learn more about myself about

:

00:41:32,900 --> 00:41:33,233

you know

:

00:41:33,233 --> 00:41:35,666

why do we do the things we do and what do they lead to

:

00:41:35,666 --> 00:41:35,933

right

:

00:41:35,933 --> 00:41:38,833

nothing I don't think happens for complete by accident

:

00:41:38,833 --> 00:41:41,966

I think we make our path we chart our path

:

00:41:41,966 --> 00:41:43,466

but you know

:

00:41:43,466 --> 00:41:46,366

the decisions we make are all for something

:

00:41:46,366 --> 00:41:49,000

even if they don't seem like it when we're doing them

:

00:41:49,466 --> 00:41:52,200

oh 100% and uh

:

00:41:52,833 --> 00:41:55,533

a good friend of mine used to have a showcase

:

00:41:55,533 --> 00:41:59,300

so he would have a networking night um

:

00:41:59,300 --> 00:42:00,766

Barry Lebo uh

:

00:42:00,766 --> 00:42:04,033

did these on the regular and um

:

00:42:04,766 --> 00:42:07,100

uh he had one and I said I

:

00:42:07,100 --> 00:42:08,833

I want a time slot

:

00:42:08,833 --> 00:42:10,566

like figure out what your calendar looks like

:

00:42:10,566 --> 00:42:11,766

I want a time slot I

:

00:42:11,766 --> 00:42:14,866

I worked for a year on a program that I introduced

:

00:42:14,866 --> 00:42:16,300

at his uh

:

00:42:16,300 --> 00:42:17,966

event and then subsequently at a

:

00:42:17,966 --> 00:42:19,733

at a coaching event uh

:

00:42:19,733 --> 00:42:21,933

and it was called Sing Song Cell

:

00:42:22,566 --> 00:42:25,133

and it was talking about musicians

:

00:42:25,166 --> 00:42:28,233

so you're a musician I'm a musician right

:

00:42:28,233 --> 00:42:31,666

if if we go and we get a gig

:

00:42:31,666 --> 00:42:33,066

so we're gonna play Daniel you

:

00:42:33,066 --> 00:42:33,966

you're the drummer in our band

:

00:42:33,966 --> 00:42:35,566

and I'm the guitar player in our band

:

00:42:35,700 --> 00:42:38,333

at this point we're gonna play uh

:

00:42:38,333 --> 00:42:40,400

a month from now well

:

00:42:40,733 --> 00:42:42,366

we're gonna rehearse like

:

00:42:42,366 --> 00:42:44,500

there's gonna be two or three rehearsals per week

:

00:42:44,500 --> 00:42:46,366

for the next four weeks right

:

00:42:46,366 --> 00:42:49,933

we're gonna have 20 hours more

:

00:42:49,933 --> 00:42:55,266

24 hours of rehearsal to play three 45 minute sets

:

00:42:56,166 --> 00:42:59,033

right we've played these songs a million times now

:

00:42:59,033 --> 00:43:00,866

we just played them a million and one

:

00:43:01,466 --> 00:43:05,766

so we will put that kind of effort into right

:

00:43:05,766 --> 00:43:09,466

the event to be great for one show

:

00:43:10,133 --> 00:43:12,266

and I when I bug real estate agents

:

00:43:12,300 --> 00:43:14,433

it's like okay

:

00:43:14,433 --> 00:43:15,966

you do a buyer presentation

:

00:43:15,966 --> 00:43:17,100

I call it a plan

:

00:43:17,100 --> 00:43:18,500

cause I don't like the word presentation

:

00:43:18,500 --> 00:43:19,966

sounds like a pitch right

:

00:43:19,966 --> 00:43:21,566

when you're gonna do a listing plan

:

00:43:21,566 --> 00:43:23,633

not a listing presentation right

:

00:43:23,633 --> 00:43:24,700

when do you practice oh

:

00:43:24,700 --> 00:43:29,233

I know it good go show me right

:

00:43:29,233 --> 00:43:30,666

you don't know it as well as you think you do

:

00:43:30,666 --> 00:43:32,766

cause you you did it once you built it once

:

00:43:32,766 --> 00:43:34,633

you built a slide deck in a way ago

:

00:43:34,866 --> 00:43:36,933

and you can't do it the same way twice

:

00:43:37,066 --> 00:43:38,600

because you don't practice it

:

00:43:38,866 --> 00:43:41,466

and you can't also prepare it

:

00:43:41,466 --> 00:43:44,566

and present it in a way that the client will listen

:

00:43:44,933 --> 00:43:45,300

right

:

00:43:45,300 --> 00:43:47,633

I love the song Brown Eyed Girl you change the words

:

00:43:47,633 --> 00:43:49,500

it's not the same song I can't sing along

:

00:43:49,500 --> 00:43:52,966

so I don't like your version and at the same time

:

00:43:52,966 --> 00:43:54,366

I really like reggae so

:

00:43:54,366 --> 00:43:56,966

unless you can do Brown Eyed Girl with a reggae beat

:

00:43:57,100 --> 00:44:00,866

at this point in time I'm not listening right yep

:

00:44:00,866 --> 00:44:03,466

I know the song yep yep you did it really well

:

00:44:03,466 --> 00:44:04,333

not interested

:

00:44:05,466 --> 00:44:07,166

and when I looked at that

:

00:44:07,166 --> 00:44:08,933

I looked at the fact that people said well

:

00:44:08,933 --> 00:44:10,900

I don't like scripts I can't learn scripts

:

00:44:10,900 --> 00:44:13,866

I can't learn how to repeat things and you kind of go

:

00:44:13,900 --> 00:44:16,700

yeah you can it's actually hardwired into your DNA

:

00:44:16,700 --> 00:44:17,766

do you know why

:

00:44:17,866 --> 00:44:21,266

because long ago when we were grunting over a fire

:

00:44:21,866 --> 00:44:23,700

somebody started looking at our legacy

:

00:44:23,700 --> 00:44:24,666

our lineage

:

00:44:25,233 --> 00:44:26,633

and they trusted

:

00:44:26,633 --> 00:44:29,800

just the shaman to remember our history

:

00:44:29,933 --> 00:44:31,833

and eventually the shaman got old

:

00:44:31,833 --> 00:44:34,500

his thing got a little bit kind of gray and foggy

:

00:44:34,500 --> 00:44:36,900

and he didn't quite remember it the same way

:

00:44:36,900 --> 00:44:39,700

every time same story sorta

:

00:44:39,700 --> 00:44:43,033

but like a bad game of telephone he would basically

:

00:44:43,766 --> 00:44:45,866

you know tell the story and every time there

:

00:44:45,866 --> 00:44:48,433

there was a new version of it people would say

:

00:44:48,466 --> 00:44:49,233

wait a minute that's

:

00:44:49,233 --> 00:44:50,833

there's a new character in this one

:

00:44:51,033 --> 00:44:52,466

so what they started doing was

:

00:44:52,466 --> 00:44:54,033

somebody started tapping a log

:

00:44:54,033 --> 00:44:55,566

you'll appreciate this as a drummer

:

00:44:55,566 --> 00:44:59,366

they gave it a beat Boof boof boof

:

00:44:59,366 --> 00:45:01,033

when the story had cadence

:

00:45:01,366 --> 00:45:04,433

it actually was able to be replicated every time

:

00:45:04,433 --> 00:45:07,133

the same way the same information

:

00:45:07,133 --> 00:45:09,300

the same storyline the same characters

:

00:45:09,300 --> 00:45:12,600

no deviation based on a beat

:

00:45:12,933 --> 00:45:15,600

so the two sides of your brain

:

00:45:15,766 --> 00:45:18,366

work in a capacity where lyrics are on one

:

00:45:18,366 --> 00:45:19,666

and music's on the other

:

00:45:19,666 --> 00:45:22,266

so my test is when we'll use the word

:

00:45:22,266 --> 00:45:24,633

you know we'll use the song American Pie

:

00:45:24,833 --> 00:45:28,233

when I do a test with people I say do you know the song

:

00:45:28,233 --> 00:45:28,700

oh yeah

:

00:45:28,700 --> 00:45:28,966

yeah

:

00:45:28,966 --> 00:45:31,300

I love the song and they all start singing the chorus

:

00:45:31,300 --> 00:45:32,233

so I'm like okay

:

00:45:32,233 --> 00:45:32,933

stop stop stop

:

00:45:32,933 --> 00:45:34,133

stop right

:

00:45:34,133 --> 00:45:36,800

start with the first verse

:

00:45:37,100 --> 00:45:40,433

but you can't sing it you can speak it

:

00:45:40,533 --> 00:45:44,366

talk it to me and they usually get

:

00:45:44,366 --> 00:45:46,066

I can still remember yeah

:

00:45:46,066 --> 00:45:47,866

let's see how far you can go this will be fun

:

00:45:47,866 --> 00:45:49,766

how far can you go let's see okay

:

00:45:49,766 --> 00:45:51,333

a long long time you can't sing it

:

00:45:51,333 --> 00:45:53,000

I can still remember you can't sing it

:

00:45:53,300 --> 00:45:55,466

how the music it used to make me smile

:

00:45:55,466 --> 00:45:57,466

and I knew if I had my chance

:

00:45:57,466 --> 00:45:59,133

I would make those people dance

:

00:45:59,133 --> 00:46:02,133

and maybe they'd be happy for a while

:

00:46:02,366 --> 00:46:03,700

I I I really like this song

:

00:46:03,700 --> 00:46:06,200

but February made me shiver uh

:

00:46:06,466 --> 00:46:08,366

with is it okay

:

00:46:08,366 --> 00:46:11,066

so now good good good stop stop stop alright

:

00:46:11,066 --> 00:46:13,300

Daniel so sing it oh

:

00:46:13,300 --> 00:46:15,100

well I'm a terrible singer but hey

:

00:46:15,100 --> 00:46:17,133

a long long time ago

:

00:46:17,133 --> 00:46:19,833

I can still remember how the music

:

00:46:19,866 --> 00:46:21,800

used to make me smile

:

00:46:26,033 --> 00:46:29,233

those people dance and maybe they'd be happy

:

00:46:36,166 --> 00:46:38,833

bad news on the doorstep I couldn't take one

:

00:46:38,833 --> 00:46:40,633

I can't get that high one more step

:

00:46:40,633 --> 00:46:42,233

there you go wow there you go

:

00:46:42,233 --> 00:46:42,933

and it kept you just

:

00:46:42,933 --> 00:46:45,666

you just brought two sides of your brain together

:

00:46:45,666 --> 00:46:47,166

so one side knows the lyrics

:

00:46:47,166 --> 00:46:49,100

it's the library at this point

:

00:46:49,100 --> 00:46:51,333

and the other side knows the beat and the rhythm

:

00:46:51,333 --> 00:46:52,900

and the case of what happens

:

00:46:52,900 --> 00:46:54,733

and when you brought them together

:

00:46:55,133 --> 00:46:57,300

the length of memory you had

:

00:46:57,300 --> 00:46:59,366

you would have finished the song yeah

:

00:46:59,366 --> 00:47:01,766

I mean even the tough verses that people gonna go man

:

00:47:01,766 --> 00:47:02,766

I don't know that you know

:

00:47:02,766 --> 00:47:04,266

the fifth verse on that yeah yeah

:

00:47:04,266 --> 00:47:05,533

yes you do yes

:

00:47:05,533 --> 00:47:07,633

you do because if I play it in the car

:

00:47:07,866 --> 00:47:08,733

you're right there

:

00:47:08,733 --> 00:47:10,933

you're all over I think the audience

:

00:47:10,933 --> 00:47:11,533

the audience

:

00:47:11,533 --> 00:47:13,733

might be unhappy that my brain just met each other

:

00:47:13,733 --> 00:47:14,566

in the middle there

:

00:47:14,566 --> 00:47:18,233

but but that that that was a very useful test though

:

00:47:18,233 --> 00:47:20,633

that proves a point I'm I'm yeah

:

00:47:20,633 --> 00:47:22,333

and I'm gonna be singing it the whole way home

:

00:47:22,333 --> 00:47:23,333

and throughout the day yeah

:

00:47:23,333 --> 00:47:27,566

I I I'm responsible for the earworm but you know

:

00:47:27,566 --> 00:47:28,900

if you looked at that and

:

00:47:28,900 --> 00:47:31,000

and what I tried to get people to understand was

:

00:47:31,033 --> 00:47:35,066

the purpose of sing song cell was the the um

:

00:47:35,366 --> 00:47:40,433

the mindset that we go through when we're looking at um

:

00:47:40,900 --> 00:47:41,700

uh

:

00:47:42,166 --> 00:47:43,266

trying to have memory

:

00:47:43,266 --> 00:47:45,366

trying to do things by script or by wrote

:

00:47:45,433 --> 00:47:47,366

at this point and if you remember

:

00:47:47,366 --> 00:47:49,266

I don't know if your parents were one of these people

:

00:47:49,266 --> 00:47:50,666

but I was one of those ones

:

00:47:50,666 --> 00:47:52,366

if my parents heard the stereo

:

00:47:52,366 --> 00:47:54,933

while I was supposed to be doing homework

:

00:47:54,966 --> 00:47:56,266

at this point I may be like

:

00:47:56,266 --> 00:47:57,333

if I come up there

:

00:47:57,333 --> 00:47:59,633

turn that thing off blah blah blah blah

:

00:47:59,633 --> 00:47:59,766

what

:

00:47:59,766 --> 00:48:02,933

they didn't realize the neuroscience of what that is

:

00:48:02,933 --> 00:48:05,066

I would have more retention

:

00:48:05,133 --> 00:48:07,333

while having music in the background

:

00:48:07,666 --> 00:48:10,133

by doing my homework it would be sticky

:

00:48:10,133 --> 00:48:12,133

because I'm associating what I'm learning

:

00:48:12,166 --> 00:48:14,166

with what I'm hearing yep

:

00:48:14,266 --> 00:48:16,466

so to all the parents out there who kind of go

:

00:48:16,466 --> 00:48:18,866

turn that crap off get those earphones off

:

00:48:19,066 --> 00:48:21,033

put them back on mine

:

00:48:21,133 --> 00:48:22,733

mine happens to be Tony Braxton

:

00:48:22,733 --> 00:48:24,633

if I have to kind of learn something

:

00:48:24,633 --> 00:48:26,833

I have Tony Braxton in my headphones

:

00:48:26,833 --> 00:48:27,700

I love it it's the weirdest thing

:

00:48:27,700 --> 00:48:29,233

I know it's a crazy thing

:

00:48:29,300 --> 00:48:30,933

but that's what I listen to

:

00:48:30,933 --> 00:48:32,766

when I actually have to learn something

:

00:48:32,766 --> 00:48:34,666

or have to read and learn something

:

00:48:34,766 --> 00:48:36,300

Tony Braxton's helping me out there

:

00:48:36,300 --> 00:48:36,900

I love it I

:

00:48:36,900 --> 00:48:37,966

I don't know if you've heard it

:

00:48:37,966 --> 00:48:40,066

but I'm a big fan of the Weezer cover of

:

00:48:40,066 --> 00:48:42,066

Unbreak My Heart so oh

:

00:48:42,466 --> 00:48:43,666

there you go it's a

:

00:48:43,666 --> 00:48:44,733

it's a pretty good one if

:

00:48:44,733 --> 00:48:46,233

if you haven't given that one a listen

:

00:48:46,233 --> 00:48:48,733

that one's a good one it's a Spotify

:

00:48:48,733 --> 00:48:50,466

yeah exactly

:

00:48:50,833 --> 00:48:53,366

so so you

:

00:48:53,366 --> 00:48:54,533

you kind of touched on

:

00:48:54,533 --> 00:48:56,766

when people think they can't do things

:

00:48:57,166 --> 00:48:58,533

more often than not I mean

:

00:48:58,533 --> 00:49:00,500

notwithstanding people in our position

:

00:49:00,500 --> 00:49:03,100

or people who have been explicitly told they shouldn't

:

00:49:03,100 --> 00:49:04,266

or can't do things I mean

:

00:49:04,266 --> 00:49:07,033

I shouldn't be running so right now I can't run

:

00:49:07,233 --> 00:49:09,700

but do you have an

:

00:49:09,700 --> 00:49:11,700

or have you seen your attitude evolve

:

00:49:11,700 --> 00:49:14,766

or has it always been one of can't isn't a thing

:

00:49:14,766 --> 00:49:18,133

or is that something that you still sort of are

:

00:49:18,133 --> 00:49:19,633

are are growing with

:

00:49:19,633 --> 00:49:19,933

like

:

00:49:19,933 --> 00:49:22,600

where are you at with can't as a concept for yourself

:

00:49:23,500 --> 00:49:26,366

yeah you know and

:

00:49:27,633 --> 00:49:32,466

in in my orientation growing up

:

00:49:33,066 --> 00:49:33,866

uh

:

00:49:34,266 --> 00:49:37,233

you know Kent was always met with watch me

:

00:49:37,866 --> 00:49:40,466

um people who kind of you know

:

00:49:40,466 --> 00:49:43,933

had disbelief in me I had a well

:

00:49:44,500 --> 00:49:47,700

I'm gonna show you type of behavior

:

00:49:47,700 --> 00:49:50,433

so that motivated and sometime to my own my own peril

:

00:49:50,433 --> 00:49:52,266

most of the time to my own peril

:

00:49:52,700 --> 00:49:54,333

but but you're still here

:

00:49:54,466 --> 00:49:59,200

you're still here I'm still here 100% and uh

:

00:49:59,966 --> 00:50:02,766

you know it was one of those situations and again

:

00:50:02,766 --> 00:50:06,533

maybe one of the byproducts of ADHD at that point right

:

00:50:06,633 --> 00:50:08,366

you become an autocrat like

:

00:50:08,366 --> 00:50:10,633

I don't just know something a little

:

00:50:10,633 --> 00:50:11,766

I know everything there is

:

00:50:11,766 --> 00:50:13,466

to never know about that particular thing

:

00:50:13,466 --> 00:50:15,266

I may know shit about everything else

:

00:50:15,466 --> 00:50:16,566

but if it's this

:

00:50:16,566 --> 00:50:19,733

and now you're gonna take me on on this oh

:

00:50:19,733 --> 00:50:22,300

hold my beer this is gonna be fun right

:

00:50:22,300 --> 00:50:23,766

I do this for a living and I really

:

00:50:23,766 --> 00:50:26,400

really really know a lot about this

:

00:50:26,633 --> 00:50:30,100

now I have grown and matured at this point

:

00:50:30,100 --> 00:50:33,966

where if I am corrected or improved or

:

00:50:33,966 --> 00:50:36,133

you know reeducated on something

:

00:50:36,133 --> 00:50:38,466

I always say thankful I'm really good

:

00:50:38,466 --> 00:50:41,266

at eating crow with some dessert of humble pie

:

00:50:41,566 --> 00:50:46,133

at this point because I'm keen to sharpen my skills

:

00:50:46,133 --> 00:50:48,533

even if I think I know it all

:

00:50:48,566 --> 00:50:51,366

so in real estate as as an example

:

00:50:51,433 --> 00:50:53,633

there are things that you know

:

00:50:53,633 --> 00:50:54,900

were the truth

:

00:50:54,900 --> 00:50:59,166

were how we did things in the 80s in the 90s

:

00:50:59,166 --> 00:51:00,933

in:

:

00:51:00,933 --> 00:51:04,900

et cetera at this point that evolved once upon a time

:

00:51:04,900 --> 00:51:05,566

believe it or not

:

00:51:05,566 --> 00:51:08,766

on the third year anniversary of a five year mortgage

:

00:51:08,766 --> 00:51:10,633

your mortgage popped open

:

00:51:10,866 --> 00:51:12,766

it allowed you to pay off the entire amount

:

00:51:12,766 --> 00:51:14,333

with no penalty

:

00:51:14,433 --> 00:51:16,966

talk to a banker today with even 25 years experience

:

00:51:16,966 --> 00:51:17,866

they're like that's bullshit

:

00:51:17,866 --> 00:51:20,066

that's never that's never been the case never

:

00:51:20,066 --> 00:51:20,833

yeah yes

:

00:51:20,833 --> 00:51:24,466

it is talk to a banker who's 40 years in the business

:

00:51:24,466 --> 00:51:25,833

and they'll correct you

:

00:51:26,133 --> 00:51:28,933

because it was once upon a time

:

00:51:29,500 --> 00:51:30,266

right so

:

00:51:30,266 --> 00:51:32,700

there's a lot of once upon a times

:

00:51:32,700 --> 00:51:33,866

in our business today

:

00:51:33,866 --> 00:51:35,766

in real estate at this point in time

:

00:51:35,766 --> 00:51:36,933

that I still have to kind of go well

:

00:51:36,933 --> 00:51:39,066

once upon a time this is how they used to do it

:

00:51:39,333 --> 00:51:41,966

so I reach out to my mentor circle and kind of go

:

00:51:41,966 --> 00:51:43,900

once upon a time like

:

00:51:43,900 --> 00:51:47,166

one recently was home inspectors

:

00:51:47,166 --> 00:51:49,366

being able to take off the front face panel of a

:

00:51:49,366 --> 00:51:51,533

of a panel hydro panel in a home

:

00:51:51,533 --> 00:51:54,666

16 years ago they went around and said

:

00:51:54,700 --> 00:51:55,933

listen home inspectors

:

00:51:55,933 --> 00:51:59,566

like we will not enact errors and omissions insurance

:

00:51:59,566 --> 00:52:04,166

if you've taken the panel off the front of the panel

:

00:52:04,866 --> 00:52:07,166

like the homeowner can do it or a licensed electrician

:

00:52:07,166 --> 00:52:09,133

as a matter of fact a master electrician

:

00:52:09,133 --> 00:52:11,066

would have been the only person that could have done it

:

00:52:11,766 --> 00:52:15,033

at this point now I have a fast forward situation

:

00:52:15,033 --> 00:52:17,733

and I talk to somebody who I trust with the wisdom

:

00:52:17,733 --> 00:52:18,900

and I'm like hey

:

00:52:18,900 --> 00:52:20,666

16 years ago I did a video

:

00:52:20,666 --> 00:52:24,033

and this was the national awareness of

:

00:52:24,033 --> 00:52:25,266

what they can and can't do

:

00:52:25,266 --> 00:52:26,966

has that changed and she's like

:

00:52:26,966 --> 00:52:30,533

uh huh it's changed they can do it

:

00:52:30,533 --> 00:52:31,333

they can't touch it

:

00:52:31,333 --> 00:52:32,966

they can't work on the panel at this point

:

00:52:32,966 --> 00:52:34,866

they have to put it back exactly the way they wanted

:

00:52:34,866 --> 00:52:37,033

or they found it at this point in time

:

00:52:37,033 --> 00:52:39,666

but they can take the panel off for the purposes of

:

00:52:39,733 --> 00:52:43,166

inspection oh okay again

:

00:52:43,166 --> 00:52:45,566

what used to be what is today

:

00:52:45,566 --> 00:52:48,333

and now I'm smart enough to kind of go hmm

:

00:52:48,700 --> 00:52:50,166

I better just double check that

:

00:52:50,166 --> 00:52:51,800

cause I know this

:

00:52:51,900 --> 00:52:55,200

and I wanna make sure that that's still the answer

:

00:52:55,500 --> 00:52:57,533

right so yeah

:

00:52:58,033 --> 00:53:00,100

that that actually leads me to an interesting question

:

00:53:00,100 --> 00:53:01,833

and we're with we're with for those of you joining us

:

00:53:01,833 --> 00:53:04,200

we're with Ron James right now Coach Ron

:

00:53:04,633 --> 00:53:10,466

survivor like me of a bypass surgery media personality

:

00:53:10,566 --> 00:53:13,466

real estate coach all around great guy

:

00:53:13,466 --> 00:53:15,333

I've got a question for you

:

00:53:15,333 --> 00:53:17,733

building on what you just said uh

:

00:53:17,733 --> 00:53:19,766

for those people out there who are listening

:

00:53:19,766 --> 00:53:23,466

who may consider themselves on the older side

:

00:53:23,733 --> 00:53:26,966

and they're telling themselves a story

:

00:53:27,166 --> 00:53:29,266

that some of these new ways of doing

:

00:53:29,266 --> 00:53:30,700

things are beyond them so

:

00:53:30,700 --> 00:53:32,733

they grew up learning a lot of these things

:

00:53:32,733 --> 00:53:34,300

and have a way of doing things

:

00:53:34,300 --> 00:53:35,733

that has served them well

:

00:53:35,866 --> 00:53:38,733

but the world continues to change around us

:

00:53:38,733 --> 00:53:42,033

for better or for worse and you've really

:

00:53:42,033 --> 00:53:46,733

I think balanced the ability to take in the new stuff

:

00:53:46,733 --> 00:53:48,700

that's useful retain the stuff that

:

00:53:48,700 --> 00:53:50,633

you know that gives you an edge

:

00:53:50,633 --> 00:53:51,766

like you were just talking about

:

00:53:51,766 --> 00:53:53,400

of the way things have been

:

00:53:53,833 --> 00:53:54,466

um

:

00:53:54,466 --> 00:53:57,133

what would be your advice to people who are just saying

:

00:53:57,133 --> 00:54:00,533

this stuff isn't for me or

:

00:54:00,533 --> 00:54:01,866

or it's beyond me

:

00:54:01,866 --> 00:54:05,066

and I just am going to ride this wave

:

00:54:05,100 --> 00:54:07,666

until I'm overtaken by the new stuff

:

00:54:07,666 --> 00:54:09,066

cause I don't wanna deal with it

:

00:54:09,433 --> 00:54:12,000

yeah and that's a good question

:

00:54:12,333 --> 00:54:14,133

um you know

:

00:54:14,166 --> 00:54:15,566

it's interesting every

:

00:54:15,566 --> 00:54:19,566

every new agent and I'm talking both ways

:

00:54:19,700 --> 00:54:21,733

you know new and well

:

00:54:21,866 --> 00:54:23,800

here's our our TREB stats

:

00:54:24,133 --> 00:54:25,366

you know the average age of

:

00:54:25,500 --> 00:54:27,500

a real estate agent in the Toronto

:

00:54:27,500 --> 00:54:30,133

Real Estate Board is a 54 year old woman

:

00:54:30,166 --> 00:54:32,233

that's the average age right

:

00:54:32,233 --> 00:54:35,766

but a team leader is a 32 year old male

:

00:54:37,500 --> 00:54:38,766

interesting so

:

00:54:38,766 --> 00:54:40,866

you know you need both uh

:

00:54:40,866 --> 00:54:41,966

Dave Chalmers uh

:

00:54:41,966 --> 00:54:44,100

my my van of action guy

:

00:54:44,100 --> 00:54:47,266

and I have been talking about doing an old new

:

00:54:47,266 --> 00:54:50,466

having a panel having the used to be's

:

00:54:50,966 --> 00:54:51,666

dare I say

:

00:54:51,666 --> 00:54:55,666

has been's at this point time with the new gunslingers

:

00:54:55,966 --> 00:54:58,966

right that have it AI dialed in right

:

00:54:58,966 --> 00:55:01,833

you should see my inbox it's filled with leads

:

00:55:02,433 --> 00:55:05,933

and you know I always like the guys and I'm like okay

:

00:55:05,933 --> 00:55:07,233

let's go let's have some fun

:

00:55:07,233 --> 00:55:09,733

you know if you're all great on leads and conversion

:

00:55:09,733 --> 00:55:11,566

let's go let's see if you can convert me

:

00:55:11,566 --> 00:55:12,733

yeah right

:

00:55:12,733 --> 00:55:14,633

cause I guarantee you can right

:

00:55:14,633 --> 00:55:15,533

and the reason why is

:

00:55:15,533 --> 00:55:17,833

because you're just trying to get me into the door

:

00:55:17,833 --> 00:55:18,500

at this point in time

:

00:55:18,500 --> 00:55:20,500

I'm trying to make a kind of living for you having

:

00:55:20,500 --> 00:55:23,133

build a house for you at this point in time

:

00:55:23,133 --> 00:55:24,866

that you're gonna talk to your kids about

:

00:55:25,100 --> 00:55:27,833

so really at this point

:

00:55:28,833 --> 00:55:30,066

uh it's

:

00:55:30,066 --> 00:55:32,700

it's too easy to dismiss our history

:

00:55:32,700 --> 00:55:35,666

it's too easy to dismiss our historians

:

00:55:36,166 --> 00:55:37,333

there are people that did real estate

:

00:55:37,333 --> 00:55:38,066

you gotta appreciate that

:

00:55:38,066 --> 00:55:40,833

I did real estate without internet right

:

00:55:41,166 --> 00:55:43,933

my closing weapon of mass destruction

:

00:55:43,933 --> 00:55:45,666

was a gold cross pen

:

00:55:46,466 --> 00:55:48,733

back in the day I didn't even have a pager

:

00:55:49,433 --> 00:55:51,333

right let alone a cell phone uh

:

00:55:51,333 --> 00:55:52,533

I had a mentor

:

00:55:53,700 --> 00:55:54,500

uh

:

00:55:54,766 --> 00:55:57,100

who challenged me he

:

00:55:57,100 --> 00:55:58,700

when I first started in the real estate business

:

00:55:58,700 --> 00:56:01,333

he was 10 years my senior and he would say

:

00:56:01,333 --> 00:56:03,100

what do you see and man I

:

00:56:03,100 --> 00:56:07,633

I came to absolutely hate what do you see right

:

00:56:07,633 --> 00:56:08,933

he'd go uh

:

00:56:08,933 --> 00:56:10,466

where does that bus stop go

:

00:56:11,533 --> 00:56:12,833

I don't know he'd say

:

00:56:12,833 --> 00:56:14,766

find out like someone's gonna ask you

:

00:56:14,766 --> 00:56:16,466

they're gonna move to Hart Lake in Brampton

:

00:56:16,466 --> 00:56:18,233

when it was like you had to go through

:

00:56:18,300 --> 00:56:21,366

10 miles of farm field before you got to Hart Lake

:

00:56:21,533 --> 00:56:23,466

at this point someone's doesn't have a car

:

00:56:23,466 --> 00:56:25,900

cause somebody takes one to work at this point

:

00:56:25,900 --> 00:56:27,533

they're gonna need the bus to go somewhere

:

00:56:27,533 --> 00:56:29,000

where does that bus go

:

00:56:30,100 --> 00:56:32,700

I don't know today we pull up on the phone

:

00:56:32,700 --> 00:56:33,433

what is it uh

:

00:56:33,433 --> 00:56:34,933

okay it's the 9th line okay

:

00:56:34,933 --> 00:56:37,800

we're gonna go on the where's the 9th line bus go

:

00:56:38,566 --> 00:56:40,733

back then it was shoe leather

:

00:56:41,333 --> 00:56:43,833

right I had to go to the Brampton Transit system

:

00:56:43,833 --> 00:56:44,700

find out you know

:

00:56:44,700 --> 00:56:47,466

the map for the bus routes and where I was

:

00:56:47,466 --> 00:56:49,433

and what that looked like and how it worked

:

00:56:49,433 --> 00:56:51,666

and yeah the whole bit

:

00:56:52,133 --> 00:56:56,266

what do you see I miss having that kind of challenge

:

00:56:56,300 --> 00:56:57,233

I remember

:

00:56:57,333 --> 00:57:00,133

he actually physically taught me how to show a house

:

00:57:00,300 --> 00:57:02,966

I talked to realtors on a regular basis at that point

:

00:57:02,966 --> 00:57:04,800

who showed you how to kind of show a home

:

00:57:05,900 --> 00:57:06,933

nobody right

:

00:57:06,933 --> 00:57:07,666

do you work with the brokerage

:

00:57:07,666 --> 00:57:08,766

oh one of the best broker

:

00:57:08,766 --> 00:57:09,466

a record oh yeah

:

00:57:09,466 --> 00:57:11,100

he's awesome love him right

:

00:57:11,100 --> 00:57:12,966

nobody showed you how to show a house

:

00:57:13,866 --> 00:57:15,400

so how do you know you do it right

:

00:57:15,500 --> 00:57:17,166

well I've made deals uh

:

00:57:17,166 --> 00:57:18,900

that's you know

:

00:57:18,900 --> 00:57:20,533

you get somebody a set of drums yeah

:

00:57:20,533 --> 00:57:21,766

maybe they can figure it out

:

00:57:21,766 --> 00:57:22,933

you give them some instructions

:

00:57:22,933 --> 00:57:23,966

some leadership and actually

:

00:57:23,966 --> 00:57:24,466

some tests

:

00:57:24,466 --> 00:57:26,533

to get them understand that they can have some growth

:

00:57:26,533 --> 00:57:29,600

right even professional drummers have drummer teachers

:

00:57:29,933 --> 00:57:33,166

yeah because you were taught some bad fundamentals

:

00:57:33,166 --> 00:57:34,666

with some bad you know

:

00:57:34,666 --> 00:57:37,000

habits nobody corrected you

:

00:57:37,866 --> 00:57:39,100

right you thought huh

:

00:57:39,100 --> 00:57:41,033

sounds like the record close enough

:

00:57:41,333 --> 00:57:44,266

so in the same thing with real estate at this point

:

00:57:44,266 --> 00:57:47,733

you should have somebody in your circle of influence

:

00:57:47,766 --> 00:57:48,933

who's old

:

00:57:49,666 --> 00:57:52,233

they did it different you can make fun of them sure

:

00:57:52,233 --> 00:57:53,533

absolutely they are

:

00:57:53,533 --> 00:57:55,900

you know Mennonites and it comes to

:

00:57:55,900 --> 00:57:57,800

you know they don't know AI

:

00:57:58,100 --> 00:57:59,366

on the flip side

:

00:57:59,866 --> 00:58:02,366

I would turn it around for the aging and there are

:

00:58:02,366 --> 00:58:04,733

we are the majority not the minority

:

00:58:04,733 --> 00:58:06,733

it's the young kids you know

:

00:58:06,733 --> 00:58:09,100

people under 40 that are the minority

:

00:58:09,100 --> 00:58:10,266

not older

:

00:58:10,833 --> 00:58:12,566

no one ever kind of grew up

:

00:58:12,566 --> 00:58:15,066

maybe today they do but back then right

:

00:58:15,066 --> 00:58:17,766

real estate was a second third or fourth career

:

00:58:17,766 --> 00:58:19,266

it was after the parachute

:

00:58:19,266 --> 00:58:20,833

that you got your real estate license

:

00:58:21,166 --> 00:58:22,500

parachute being your corporate

:

00:58:22,500 --> 00:58:25,066

you know pension plan and now you have an income

:

00:58:25,066 --> 00:58:26,800

so you might as well dabble in real estate

:

00:58:28,033 --> 00:58:29,733

today people are growing up

:

00:58:29,733 --> 00:58:30,866

kids are growing up kind of going

:

00:58:30,866 --> 00:58:32,666

when I grow up I'm gonna be a real estate agent

:

00:58:32,666 --> 00:58:35,766

not in my lifetime no one ever said that right fireman

:

00:58:35,766 --> 00:58:36,933

police officer nurse

:

00:58:36,933 --> 00:58:40,966

doctor not realtor at this point

:

00:58:40,966 --> 00:58:43,266

so there are people with all

:

00:58:43,266 --> 00:58:46,200

I mean there is a team I know of in the Windsor area

:

00:58:46,300 --> 00:58:48,733

a lady was doing 80 transactions a year on her own

:

00:58:48,733 --> 00:58:52,333

she was definitely in her late 50s at this point

:

00:58:52,333 --> 00:58:55,800

that a young team bought her book

:

00:58:55,933 --> 00:58:57,100

over a five year period

:

00:58:57,100 --> 00:58:58,466

we're going to give you this much money

:

00:58:58,466 --> 00:59:01,233

20% of all of our sales over the next five years

:

00:59:01,233 --> 00:59:06,200

you just have to migrate your CRM to us was beautiful

:

00:59:06,233 --> 00:59:07,666

old met new

:

00:59:07,666 --> 00:59:11,033

and I remember hearing her on stage kind of going

:

00:59:11,033 --> 00:59:13,966

this is great I used to do 80 transactions on my own

:

00:59:13,966 --> 00:59:15,666

all the paperwork all of the

:

00:59:15,666 --> 00:59:16,933

you know due diligence

:

00:59:16,966 --> 00:59:18,733

all the stay in touch etcetera

:

00:59:18,733 --> 00:59:20,033

it's almost unheard of

:

00:59:20,033 --> 00:59:21,733

with the amount of work that she put in

:

00:59:21,766 --> 00:59:23,766

and she said now do you know what I do

:

00:59:23,766 --> 00:59:25,533

I go lunch for a living

:

00:59:26,033 --> 00:59:27,433

I just go network with my clients

:

00:59:27,433 --> 00:59:28,966

bring one of the people from the team and kind of go

:

00:59:28,966 --> 00:59:30,966

have you met Bob right

:

00:59:30,966 --> 00:59:32,266

and that's the now the connection

:

00:59:32,266 --> 00:59:35,466

that's her job is to be the ambassador for this team

:

00:59:35,466 --> 00:59:37,966

with her client base yeah

:

00:59:37,966 --> 00:59:40,166

and I go wow guys

:

00:59:40,166 --> 00:59:42,433

if you're having trouble kind of doubling your database

:

00:59:42,433 --> 00:59:44,066

tripling it quadrupling it

:

00:59:44,066 --> 00:59:45,700

cause you need to right

:

00:59:45,700 --> 00:59:46,800

I look at it and figure

:

00:59:46,933 --> 00:59:48,633

you got 100 people in the database

:

00:59:48,633 --> 00:59:50,766

you're gonna do $25,000 a year

:

00:59:51,300 --> 00:59:53,733

so you wanna do more right

:

00:59:53,733 --> 00:59:54,733

you're gonna need more

:

00:59:54,733 --> 00:59:56,833

wanna do quarter million dollars a year in real estate

:

00:59:56,833 --> 00:59:58,633

good you need a thousand person database

:

00:59:58,633 --> 01:00:00,433

oh no you don't yeah

:

01:00:00,433 --> 01:00:01,233

you do

:

01:00:01,766 --> 01:00:02,533

right keep in mind

:

01:00:02,533 --> 01:00:04,900

that only 20% of your database actually moves

:

01:00:04,900 --> 01:00:06,366

every year right

:

01:00:06,366 --> 01:00:08,500

20% so that's 200 people

:

01:00:08,500 --> 01:00:10,133

you have to kind of go in there and fish out

:

01:00:10,133 --> 01:00:10,833

all the deals

:

01:00:10,833 --> 01:00:12,766

that are just going to pay you a quarter million bucks

:

01:00:13,733 --> 01:00:14,033

yeah

:

01:00:14,033 --> 01:00:16,633

but you need a lot more people and people kind of go

:

01:00:16,633 --> 01:00:19,533

it took me seven years to get 100 well

:

01:00:19,633 --> 01:00:21,333

unless you have another seven

:

01:00:21,333 --> 01:00:23,100

you're gonna have to have something more creative

:

01:00:23,100 --> 01:00:25,166

to add another hundred that's right

:

01:00:25,166 --> 01:00:26,033

and quick

:

01:00:26,900 --> 01:00:28,633

it's right and they don't know how

:

01:00:29,033 --> 01:00:31,900

so this is where no substitute for hard work

:

01:00:31,900 --> 01:00:32,866

I think you know

:

01:00:32,866 --> 01:00:36,766

people people do talk a little bit too much now

:

01:00:36,766 --> 01:00:38,833

like a I fine it's a thing

:

01:00:38,833 --> 01:00:41,633

but it's not it doesn't replace I

:

01:00:42,033 --> 01:00:43,200

you know like

:

01:00:44,100 --> 01:00:47,700

the artificial that's there is artificial for a reason

:

01:00:47,700 --> 01:00:49,333

and you know whatever you want to call it

:

01:00:49,333 --> 01:00:51,366

experiential intelligence whatever

:

01:00:51,366 --> 01:00:54,466

I mean people who have been there and done that

:

01:00:54,833 --> 01:00:57,833

that is worth a ton that's worth more than anything

:

01:00:57,833 --> 01:00:59,100

any computer can tell you

:

01:00:59,100 --> 01:01:00,933

I mean the computer can help you organize

:

01:01:00,933 --> 01:01:02,266

it can help you know

:

01:01:02,266 --> 01:01:03,766

maybe get your thoughts in order

:

01:01:03,766 --> 01:01:06,100

but you still need to have some tangible thought

:

01:01:06,100 --> 01:01:09,400

and experience and hard work to get the job done

:

01:01:09,566 --> 01:01:11,866

and so that's a really important message

:

01:01:11,866 --> 01:01:12,666

yeah

:

01:01:12,933 --> 01:01:14,033

and again if we

:

01:01:14,033 --> 01:01:17,966

you know if I if I go pop culture on this Iron Man

:

01:01:18,133 --> 01:01:18,700

you know you

:

01:01:18,700 --> 01:01:20,366

you needed you know

:

01:01:20,366 --> 01:01:23,600

Tony Stark to run Jarvis that's right

:

01:01:23,666 --> 01:01:25,733

right Jarvis didn't run Tony Stark

:

01:01:26,366 --> 01:01:29,366

so that's a that's a good point

:

01:01:29,366 --> 01:01:30,333

that might be the

:

01:01:30,333 --> 01:01:33,066

the that's gonna be like the tagline for this episode

:

01:01:33,533 --> 01:01:35,500

haha Jarvis didn't run Tony Stark

:

01:01:35,500 --> 01:01:38,066

listen to Ron James there you go

:

01:01:38,066 --> 01:01:40,233

he's dropping some truth bombs today

:

01:01:40,700 --> 01:01:43,133

yeah because he is Ron James plus the truth

:

01:01:43,233 --> 01:01:44,866

he is that's it

:

01:01:44,866 --> 01:01:48,366

so why don't you give us some

:

01:01:48,500 --> 01:01:50,200

some like serious

:

01:01:50,933 --> 01:01:54,133

parting words of wisdom and advice

:

01:01:54,133 --> 01:01:56,733

for people listening there's people listening who are

:

01:01:56,733 --> 01:01:59,066

the younger folks who think they're not there yet

:

01:01:59,066 --> 01:02:02,266

and feel like they're in a can't position

:

01:02:02,333 --> 01:02:04,066

I can't yet do this

:

01:02:04,066 --> 01:02:06,166

the same way that there's some older folks

:

01:02:06,166 --> 01:02:07,566

who are thinking you know what

:

01:02:07,566 --> 01:02:09,066

my opportunity passed me by

:

01:02:09,066 --> 01:02:09,933

and I can't do it

:

01:02:09,933 --> 01:02:12,366

because I didn't take advantage way back when

:

01:02:12,433 --> 01:02:13,900

and it's not just in real estate

:

01:02:13,900 --> 01:02:17,000

it's it's across whatever they might be doing

:

01:02:17,133 --> 01:02:19,266

what would be your advice

:

01:02:19,266 --> 01:02:21,366

from someone who continues

:

01:02:21,433 --> 01:02:23,166

to kick ass at everything you do

:

01:02:23,166 --> 01:02:24,333

and has been through that

:

01:02:24,333 --> 01:02:26,600

been through all sorts of things

:

01:02:26,633 --> 01:02:27,066

you know

:

01:02:27,066 --> 01:02:31,466

good and bad and continue to really kill it as you go

:

01:02:31,533 --> 01:02:35,433

what would you say to those people as their sage

:

01:02:35,533 --> 01:02:38,433

wisdom master that's gonna drop something on them now

:

01:02:40,433 --> 01:02:41,933

there's there's an old Greek saying

:

01:02:41,933 --> 01:02:43,333

and I can't say it in Greek

:

01:02:43,333 --> 01:02:44,833

not yet well

:

01:02:44,833 --> 01:02:47,300

but it basically says a couple years you'll be able to

:

01:02:47,300 --> 01:02:48,966

yes hahaha

:

01:02:49,533 --> 01:02:50,900

if you haven't got a smart brain

:

01:02:50,900 --> 01:02:52,366

you better have strong legs

:

01:02:53,166 --> 01:02:56,866

so what they mean by that is sometimes like

:

01:02:56,866 --> 01:02:57,233

you know

:

01:02:57,233 --> 01:02:59,433

you forgot something up at the hotel room right

:

01:02:59,433 --> 01:02:59,700

oh

:

01:02:59,700 --> 01:03:02,900

forgot my sunglasses so up you go and in the meantime

:

01:03:02,900 --> 01:03:03,966

by the time you got back down

:

01:03:03,966 --> 01:03:06,366

you forgot your keys or you forgot your wallet

:

01:03:06,366 --> 01:03:08,533

or you forgot sunscreen or whatever

:

01:03:08,533 --> 01:03:10,066

so up and down the elevator

:

01:03:10,066 --> 01:03:12,133

you go three or four times at that point

:

01:03:12,133 --> 01:03:15,366

so they talk about that in Greece where they say right

:

01:03:15,366 --> 01:03:16,366

if you have a soft brain

:

01:03:16,366 --> 01:03:18,933

you better have strong legs at this point

:

01:03:18,933 --> 01:03:21,766

cause you're gonna do a lot more work than you have to

:

01:03:21,766 --> 01:03:23,833

if you would have figured it out in the first place

:

01:03:23,900 --> 01:03:25,433

so in the case of you know

:

01:03:25,433 --> 01:03:27,100

some wisdom so for people that are

:

01:03:27,100 --> 01:03:29,933

you know plus 40 years at this point in time

:

01:03:29,933 --> 01:03:33,100

find some young legs you will need to trust

:

01:03:33,100 --> 01:03:33,833

somebody

:

01:03:33,833 --> 01:03:36,633

that can actually do the stuff that you used to do

:

01:03:36,633 --> 01:03:40,966

that you do still but really slow and not as often

:

01:03:41,266 --> 01:03:43,233

so find young legs to do that

:

01:03:43,233 --> 01:03:46,266

and if you're under 40 find somebody with an old brain

:

01:03:46,433 --> 01:03:49,166

they can save you a whole bunch of time

:

01:03:49,166 --> 01:03:51,433

you don't have to figure out all the mistakes

:

01:03:51,433 --> 01:03:52,700

you don't have another 40 years to

:

01:03:52,700 --> 01:03:54,133

kind of go and screw it all up

:

01:03:54,133 --> 01:03:56,633

at this point find somebody who's already done it

:

01:03:56,766 --> 01:03:58,766

like when I tell people hey listen

:

01:03:58,766 --> 01:04:00,866

he real estate business since:

:

01:04:00,866 --> 01:04:03,866

th,:

:

01:04:03,866 --> 01:04:05,100

I tell you that to tell you that

:

01:04:05,100 --> 01:04:07,133

I have made more mistakes

:

01:04:07,133 --> 01:04:08,433

more failures

:

01:04:08,666 --> 01:04:10,766

with all of the things that you're doing now

:

01:04:10,766 --> 01:04:12,066

I love when they say hey

:

01:04:12,066 --> 01:04:14,466

look at this this is brand new yeah

:

01:04:14,466 --> 01:04:17,100

it was in:

:

01:04:17,100 --> 01:04:19,966

then that's my point like it's not new

:

01:04:19,966 --> 01:04:21,933

you're not new you are new

:

01:04:22,066 --> 01:04:24,166

so the point of this situation is

:

01:04:24,166 --> 01:04:25,833

if you have a soft head

:

01:04:26,133 --> 01:04:28,166

basically means you don't have knowledge of this

:

01:04:28,166 --> 01:04:30,900

or you're not organized you better have strong legs

:

01:04:30,900 --> 01:04:33,166

because you're gonna do a lot more heavy lifting

:

01:04:33,166 --> 01:04:36,166

than you have to that's that whole work smart

:

01:04:36,166 --> 01:04:37,066

work harder

:

01:04:37,100 --> 01:04:39,666

find some people at this point that can help you

:

01:04:39,666 --> 01:04:42,766

sharpen the axe and actually make you more productive

:

01:04:42,766 --> 01:04:44,266

sooner faster better

:

01:04:44,766 --> 01:04:48,133

it takes both of these sides to be able to do that

:

01:04:48,133 --> 01:04:50,766

you just can't automatically become a genius

:

01:04:50,866 --> 01:04:52,933

without some kind of leadership and guidance

:

01:04:53,366 --> 01:04:54,933

I'll do a plug about coaching

:

01:04:54,933 --> 01:04:57,533

I don't care who you are or what you do

:

01:04:57,533 --> 01:04:58,933

everybody needs a coach

:

01:04:58,966 --> 01:05:00,466

even if that coach kind of goes

:

01:05:00,466 --> 01:05:01,866

you know what Daniel

:

01:05:02,100 --> 01:05:04,133

I hope you have an amazing day you know why

:

01:05:04,133 --> 01:05:05,600

cause you're a pretty amazing guy

:

01:05:06,133 --> 01:05:07,666

like I don't care

:

01:05:07,666 --> 01:05:09,100

if you have to pay for somebody to kind of

:

01:05:09,100 --> 01:05:10,900

basically kind of pat you on the back

:

01:05:10,900 --> 01:05:13,633

then do it the difference in your attitude

:

01:05:13,633 --> 01:05:15,166

the difference in your day

:

01:05:15,166 --> 01:05:16,833

the difference in your paycheck

:

01:05:17,033 --> 01:05:18,666

will see that reflection

:

01:05:19,366 --> 01:05:23,366

like we don't tell each other that we're good enough

:

01:05:23,466 --> 01:05:27,333

enough I agree I agree and with that

:

01:05:27,333 --> 01:05:29,733

where where can people follow you

:

01:05:29,733 --> 01:05:31,133

find you because

:

01:05:31,133 --> 01:05:33,433

I think there's people out there who need that message

:

01:05:33,433 --> 01:05:36,833

and you are as good a person as there is

:

01:05:36,833 --> 01:05:38,433

to help people with their journeys

:

01:05:39,033 --> 01:05:40,666

absolutely so Ronn James

:

01:05:40,666 --> 01:05:42,433

Ron with 2 N's short guy

:

01:05:42,433 --> 01:05:44,333

tall name Ronn James

:

01:05:44,466 --> 01:05:46,100

usually ronnjames.ca

:

01:05:46,100 --> 01:05:52,266

-:

:

01:05:52,466 --> 01:05:55,433

-:

:

01:05:55,433 --> 01:05:58,366

is my direct cell I usually have it on mute

:

01:05:58,366 --> 01:06:00,033

cause I'm on calls with clients

:

01:06:00,033 --> 01:06:02,566

and I wanna give them my undivided attention however

:

01:06:02,666 --> 01:06:04,900

I'm really good at getting back to emails

:

01:06:04,900 --> 01:06:06,933

and also voicemails

:

01:06:06,933 --> 01:06:09,433

so that's how you kind of chat and talk

:

01:06:09,633 --> 01:06:12,333

all good and if you want to go car camping

:

01:06:12,333 --> 01:06:15,766

paddle boarding have a jam at this point

:

01:06:15,766 --> 01:06:17,966

I'm up for it add me to your invite list

:

01:06:17,966 --> 01:06:19,966

I'll be there that's awesome

:

01:06:19,966 --> 01:06:21,633

I know I'm gonna be jamming with you

:

01:06:21,633 --> 01:06:23,466

maybe we'll be doing some campfire stuff

:

01:06:23,466 --> 01:06:25,100

if I can find a couple of good buckets

:

01:06:25,100 --> 01:06:26,566

to play alongside you

:

01:06:27,100 --> 01:06:29,066

yeah that's awesome

:

01:06:29,166 --> 01:06:31,433

so everybody give Ronn a call

:

01:06:31,433 --> 01:06:32,533

reach out to him

:

01:06:32,533 --> 01:06:35,133

this is just the tip of the iceberg with the

:

01:06:35,133 --> 01:06:37,100

you know wisdom and advice that he has

:

01:06:37,100 --> 01:06:38,766

he's seen a lot of things

:

01:06:38,966 --> 01:06:42,233

I'm proud to be a member of the Zipper Club with you

:

01:06:42,233 --> 01:06:43,466

and we are going to

:

01:06:43,466 --> 01:06:45,233

continue to have great stories for each other

:

01:06:45,233 --> 01:06:48,266

this is probably just chapter 1 of many of us chatting

:

01:06:48,366 --> 01:06:50,466
