Now, I don't know about you, but I've had my
Speaker:fair share of moments where I've stared in the
Speaker:mirror and where that
Speaker:25 year old with the perky well,
Speaker:everything a too. But you know what?
Speaker:I'm over it. I'm embracing this
Speaker:50 plus body of mine, wrinkles,
Speaker:jiggles, and all, and I want to help you do
Speaker:the same. So today, we're gonna talk about
Speaker:body positivity.
Speaker:Hey, friend. Ever feel like those old fashioned
Speaker:ideas about aging just don't fit you? If you're ready to
Speaker:own this incredible chapter with grace, style, and a touch of
Speaker:sass, this is your space. Welcome to the aging with
Speaker:grace and style podcast. I'm Valerie Hatcher, and I'm here
Speaker:with empowering tips, inspiring stories, and a whole lot of
Speaker:fun just for us, women over 50. So grab
Speaker:your favorite beverage, turn up the volume, and let's
Speaker:get started.
Speaker:So what is body positivity and why does it matter?
Speaker:In simple terms, body positivity is all
Speaker:about accepting and loving your body as it is,
Speaker:regardless of shape, size, age, or
Speaker:any so called imperfections. It's
Speaker:about shifting the focus from what society
Speaker:tells us we should look like to appreciating
Speaker:and celebrating our unique beauty. This
Speaker:movement isn't new, but its
Speaker:relevance for women over 50 is huge.
Speaker:We've grown up with so many mixed messages about what
Speaker:our body should look like. And as we age,
Speaker:those messages don't disappear. In fact, I
Speaker:think they get louder, which brings us to some of
Speaker:the unique challenges that we face. From
Speaker:an early age, we're bombarded with images of
Speaker:what the ideal body should look like, youthful,
Speaker:wrinkle free, and slim. Remember Sass
Speaker:song Brick House by the Commodores? Well, they
Speaker:sang about the measurements of 36,
Speaker:24, 36. According to that song,
Speaker:that was the perfect figure, kinda like the
Speaker:hourglass figure. And I can tell you, I a
Speaker:to have those measurements. Well, it never
Speaker:happened. But as we mature, those
Speaker:unrealistic expectations can take a serious
Speaker:toll on our self esteem and our body
Speaker:image. Our bodies are Aging,
Speaker:thanks to menopause and aging, and society
Speaker:doesn't make it easy to feel good about those
Speaker:changes. I'll admit, there have
Speaker:been times Sass I've gotten older when I've looked in the
Speaker:mirror and felt totally dissatisfied with the
Speaker:changes that I've seen. But you know what?
Speaker:My changes and yours too represent
Speaker:the journey of our lives. The laughter lines from the
Speaker:years of joy, the softer silhouette that
Speaker:cradled the new life, our bodies are evidence
Speaker:of the experiences that have shaped us.
Speaker:I know this journey isn't always easy.
Speaker:We all have those days when we just feel
Speaker:down on ourselves. That's why I wanted to
Speaker:discuss this topic and share some practical
Speaker:tips to help you cultivate body positivity.
Speaker:So let's talk about those challenges that I mentioned earlier.
Speaker:Society and media often portray
Speaker:aging as something to be feared or avoided
Speaker:at all costs. A don't want to avoid with at all costs because then
Speaker:when you think of what happens when we stop aging,
Speaker:I don't think we're ready to go there. But we see
Speaker:these perfect images of youth and beauty
Speaker:everywhere, and it can really be hard
Speaker:not to compare ourselves. On top of
Speaker:that, our bodies are navigating
Speaker:menopause, weight fluctuations, wrinkles,
Speaker:and all a these can impact our self image.
Speaker:But guess what? We don't have to buy into that
Speaker:negative narrative. We can choose to
Speaker:embrace our bodies and all the amazing
Speaker:things that they've done to and continue to
Speaker:do for us. I wanna share a personal
Speaker:story. So for many years, I a
Speaker:with accepting my body, especially as
Speaker:I saw it change with age and with the fluctuations in
Speaker:my weight. There was a time a few years ago
Speaker:when I put on weight a
Speaker:due to work related stress and also
Speaker:because, my need for hip replacement surgery and
Speaker:not being as active as I used to be. So I'm a
Speaker:stress eater. So I was stressed
Speaker:about work, so I ate. I was
Speaker:stressed about the hip and the corresponding pain,
Speaker:so I ate. Then I tried to lose weight, and
Speaker:it wouldn't come off, so I stressed about not being
Speaker:able to eat, to lose weight, and I ate some
Speaker:more. Each time I walked in
Speaker:front of the mirror, I did not like what I
Speaker:Sass, but I realized that every line,
Speaker:every curve told a story.
Speaker:Now was it a story that I wanted to hear at that point?
Speaker:Probably not. But it was a testament
Speaker:of my life, my experiences, and my strength to
Speaker:control what was in my a. And
Speaker:that was to stop stress eating.
Speaker:And I know I'm not alone in this journey.
Speaker:I've had the pleasure of talking to some
Speaker:incredible women who have embraced body
Speaker:positivity. Their stories are powerful and
Speaker:inspiring. Take Janae, a a
Speaker:vibrant 62 year old who decided to start a
Speaker:fitness journey not to lose weight, but to
Speaker:feel stronger and more connected to her body.
Speaker:Or Lynelle, who at 55 began
Speaker:modeling to challenge the stereotypes of beauty.
Speaker:These women are living proof that it's
Speaker:never too late to love yourself just as you
Speaker:are. So how do we start embracing
Speaker:body positivity? Here are a few tips that have worked for
Speaker:me and many other women. Number 1,
Speaker:ditch the negative self talk. Instead of
Speaker:focusing on your flaws, celebrate your strengths. Be
Speaker:kind to yourself, replace negative thoughts with
Speaker:positive affirmations. Look in the mirror and appreciate
Speaker:the unique beauty that's staring back at you. Don't
Speaker:concentrate on rolls or I see flab
Speaker:here. I could tone here. Write down
Speaker:3 things that you love about your body every day.
Speaker:Trust me. It really does work wonders.
Speaker:Number 2 is prioritize self care. Make
Speaker:time for yourself, whether it's a relaxing
Speaker:bath, a walk, or just sitting quietly with a good
Speaker:book, which is my favorite. Self care is
Speaker:crucial. Number 3,
Speaker:healthy habits. Focus on what makes
Speaker:you feel good. Take care of your body by eating
Speaker:nourishing foods, moving your body in ways
Speaker:that feel good, and getting enough sleep.
Speaker:When you feel good on the inside, it shows on the
Speaker:outside. 4, surround yourself
Speaker:with positivity. Follow
Speaker:social media accounts and join communities
Speaker:that promote body positivity, proaging,
Speaker:and self love. Fill your environment
Speaker:with messages that uplift and inspire
Speaker:you. And 5, experiment with
Speaker:fashion. Find clothes that make you feel
Speaker:confident and beautiful. Don't let anyone tell
Speaker:you what you can or can't wear at this age.
Speaker:It's your body and your rules.
Speaker:Wear what makes you feel good. If you love bright
Speaker:colors, then rock them. If you like print,
Speaker:rock them. If you prefer Sass a,
Speaker:then go for it. The key is to find
Speaker:clothes that flatter your figure and make you feel
Speaker:like a $1,000,000. Don't be afraid to try
Speaker:new trends, but always stay true to your personal
Speaker:style. You know what? It's
Speaker:time that we redefine
Speaker:beauty on our own terms. True beauty
Speaker:radiates from the inside out. It's the graceful
Speaker:confidence of a woman who understands her
Speaker:worth isn't measured by a number on
Speaker:a scale or the tautness of her skin.
Speaker:When we embrace our bodies with compassion,
Speaker:we free ourselves from the constraints of
Speaker:meaningless a. Let's look
Speaker:at and be inspired by these women who
Speaker:are rocking body positivity. One that I've noticed
Speaker:is Ellen DeGeneres. She embraces her
Speaker:true self and inspires 1,000,000. And
Speaker:did you know she has a skincare line? She does. Check it out.
Speaker:Oprah Winfrey, we all know she promotes self love
Speaker:and a through her platforms. And
Speaker:then I recently saw Christie Brinkley on the
Speaker:Touch Show. First of all, I didn't know she was 70,
Speaker:but she mentioned how she talked about how
Speaker:she embraces aging gracefully.
Speaker:These women remind us that beauty is
Speaker:ageless a confidence comes from within.
Speaker:Now, unfortunately, the world sometimes still
Speaker:carries ugly prejudices against older women,
Speaker:often treating us as invisible or devaluing
Speaker:our wisdom and experience. But we have the power
Speaker:to challenge those tired stereotypes just by
Speaker:existing as our authentic, vibrant selves.
Speaker:Our presence shatters the misguided notion that
Speaker:life's adventures end at a certain age. Girl, please.
Speaker:With grace and courage, let's keep rewriting the narrative
Speaker:around aging, celebrating every season of
Speaker:womanhood. So let's
Speaker:make a pact today to love ourselves
Speaker:deeply, to reject the misguided judgment
Speaker:of others, and to lift up our fellow
Speaker:a along the way. Our bodies
Speaker:are meant to be cherished and appreciated for their
Speaker:amazing capacities, not criticized for
Speaker:falling short of an unrealistic ideal.
Speaker:When we lead with body positivity,
Speaker:we give ourselves and then those around us
Speaker:the gift of wholeness and belonging.
Speaker:Let's keep fanning those flames of self love because a
Speaker:confident, radiant woman over 50,
Speaker:no. That's true inspiration.
Speaker:Before we go, I want to share some resources that
Speaker:can help you on your body positivity
Speaker:journey. Check out these Sass, such as,

Speaker:Taylor. And it's about celebrating everybody

Speaker:and the 3rd book that I recently picked up is called
Speaker:Fearless by Trinny, t r I n n
Speaker:y, Woodall. I'm gonna put them in the show notes
Speaker:so you can look them up. But and, also, follow
