Shownotes

Happy New Year, friend.

In this first Three Thoughts for Thursday of 2026, I want to slow the moment down just enough for us to get oriented — before we rush into resolutions, intentions, or plans for the year ahead.

January carries a lot of cultural pressure to decide everything at once, but orientation comes first. In this episode, I share three simple thoughts about why grounding yourself in where you are right now creates far more clarity, confidence, and momentum than jumping straight into goal-setting.

We’ll talk about why resolutions tend to fade, how orientation meets you where you actually are, and why listening — not over-planning — is what builds self-trust as the year begins.

This episode is an invitation to put your feet on the ground, notice what’s around you, and let the next right steps reveal themselves naturally.

Speaker A:

Welcome to three Thoughts for Thursday, where wisdom meets momentum.

Speaker A:

Here's Kimberly Beer, entrepreneurial, wise woman and cyber sorceress to share three sparks to challenge how you think, create and lead.

Speaker B:

Oh, so happy January to you friend.

Speaker B:

I know we are into a new year.

Speaker B:

2026 has begun as you are listening to this, and I'm excited for this year.

Speaker B:

I hope I don't jinx it by being excited for it, but I am excited.

Speaker B:

I'm excited with the possibility with the Year of the Fire Horse.

Speaker B:

I'm excited with the possibility for me entering a new decade of my life.

Speaker B:

I have a big birthday in February this year and I'm excited for the things I have planned in be more business and in my podcasting realm.

Speaker B:

And as I sit here on the very first day of the year, I feel the need to orient myself to all of that excitement that is coming down the pike and to just get my feet squarely on the ground.

Speaker B:

And I invite you to join me for that.

Speaker B:

And my three thoughts for Thursday.

Speaker B:

This week is about orienting yourself in the new year.

Speaker B:

So January is a time that a lot of us make resolutions.

Speaker B:

And I've said this before in a different podcast, which you may or may not have heard, but even if we choose to opt out of the resolution making, which I've been doing for quite a few years now, because I figured out that making a resolution really doesn't shift or change anything.

Speaker B:

And honestly, just like gym memberships skyrocket the first couple of weeks of the year and then by the middle of February, the gym is empty again.

Speaker B:

So, you know, that tells me resolutions are not always the best way to go about things.

Speaker B:

But even if we choose to opt out of them in some way, we're still caught up in that energy of that resolution time of year.

Speaker B:

And some people will shift it from being a resolution into an intention and levels things up better.

Speaker B:

But I don't know as though I think that, let me put it this way, I think we slip back into the resolution habit.

Speaker B:

Even when we change thematically the name of it to to be intention, it does help move the energy a little bit.

Speaker B:

But sometimes we backslide into resolution.

Speaker B:

So what I want to offer you is let's do get oriented.

Speaker B:

That's the way we would start anything, right?

Speaker B:

If I were to be doing a workshop today, the very first thing I would help people with is I would orient them.

Speaker B:

I, you know, where are you?

Speaker B:

What are we going to be doing today?

Speaker B:

And most importantly, where's the bathroom, Right?

Speaker B:

So let's Take that same practice into our New Year with us.

Speaker B:

So my first thought here is that orientation is actually where you start because it meets you where you are.

Speaker B:

Intention is where we go next.

Speaker B:

Intention comes after orientation.

Speaker B:

So when you orient yourself, where am I?

Speaker B:

What am I doing?

Speaker B:

What is the first thing that needs to happen?

Speaker B:

What is on the agenda?

Speaker B:

What am I looking at for quarter one?

Speaker B:

What am I looking at for quarter ahead?

Speaker B:

For quarter two and starting to build toward.

Speaker B:

Let's get that orientation down.

Speaker B:

If you need to write it down, do so.

Speaker B:

If you can keep it in your head, do that.

Speaker B:

If you have a planner or a vision or a goal setting worksheet, whatever it happens to be a smart plan works as well for those who like to embrace the smart plan lifestyle.

Speaker B:

But let's get oriented.

Speaker B:

Where am I?

Speaker B:

Where am I headed?

Speaker B:

And where is the bathroom?

Speaker B:

Where are the things that I need to put into place to support me as I go on this journey?

Speaker B:

My second thought here is when you let yourself orient first, it really clarifies what the next right step is for you in that process of going through orientation with where you are in your business in this new year, you really clarify what needs to start happening next.

Speaker B:

And it becomes very clear the path that you can walk to get to those goals that you want to reach throughout the year.

Speaker B:

So orientation allows you to make and map that agenda and that path as you move forward.

Speaker B:

My third thought here is that orientation happens through listening, not so much planning.

Speaker B:

So the planning part probably happened last year.

Speaker B:

It's getting to be a little bit of old news now.

Speaker B:

We've turned the page.

Speaker B:

We are into the year.

Speaker B:

We are actually into it.

Speaker B:

Those intentions are becoming very, very real.

Speaker B:

Those resolutions are getting legs underneath them for the coming months.

Speaker B:

So a moment of orientation to just simply listen and pay attention and become aware of where we are in the process of starting this new year becomes a moment to build some trust in saying, this is where I am and I know where I am.

Speaker B:

My feet are on the ground, I know what's around me.

Speaker B:

I have more clarity about what I need to do next.

Speaker B:

And that allows us to build confidence and, and confidence builds on trust.

Speaker B:

So that all compiles to give us a much clearer tarmac for the year.

Speaker B:

All right, I hope you've enjoyed this three thoughts for Thursday.

Speaker B:

Happy, Happy New Year.

Speaker B:

And I will see you in the next episode.

Speaker B:

Please note that Monday's episode for next week, our very first Make It Happen Monday of the new year is going to be about creating your own marketing habit and then I have some interesting things to share around vision work for the New Year.

Speaker B:

I love doing visioning this time of year, especially as that page turns into the new Year and I can really get myself oriented and look where I want to go.

Speaker B:

The vision work is is a very popular thing for me to do this time of year, and I'd like to share a few insights and processes to get that done.

Speaker B:

All right, thank you for hanging out with me today and I'll see you in the next episode.
