Amy:

The holiday season is a great time for museums to create special

2

:

memories for their staff, their

visitors, and their community.

3

:

And today's episode, I'm sharing ideas

that you can use it, your museum to make

4

:

this time of year special and meaningful.

5

:

Let's get started.

6

:

Welcome to the love my museum podcast.

7

:

I'm your host, Amy Kehs,

and I love museums.

8

:

I'm also a brand strategist

and the creator of the love,

9

:

my museum, suite of services.

10

:

Free and affordable resources like this

podcast designed for museum professionals.

11

:

I can't believe it, but we're

getting close to the end of the year.

12

:

And I thought today, we'd

talk about the holiday season.

13

:

At your museum.

14

:

I have some ideas that will help you

make this time of year more meaningful

15

:

and special for your staff, your

visitors and your community too.

16

:

First, let's talk about your team.

17

:

In the United States.

18

:

November's when we celebrate Thanksgiving.

19

:

We gather around the table with

family and friends to give.

20

:

Thanks.

21

:

At my Thanksgiving table,

we go around and ask.

22

:

So, what are you thankful for this year?

23

:

And the answers of course are usually

giving thanks for the things on the table

24

:

or the people sitting around the table.

25

:

But we don't often think about giving.

26

:

Thanks at work to.

27

:

After all, we spend a significant

part of our lives at work.

28

:

Often side-by-side with colleagues who

support us, challenge us, inspire us.

29

:

And so I think November should be

a time to show gratitude for the

30

:

people in our work lives as well.

31

:

Of course you could send an email,

but I challenge you to level up your

32

:

gratitude, even if it's just a little bit.

33

:

For example.

34

:

Say it in person.

35

:

In this age of texting and emailing, it

can really mean a lot to take the time to

36

:

stop by someone's desk and say, thank you.

37

:

Genuine.

38

:

Thank you for staying late last week.

39

:

To help me wrap up that project.

40

:

Can go a long way and

making someone feel valued.

41

:

You never know what kind

of impact that might have.

42

:

What bad day you may.

43

:

Be giving a boost.

44

:

You could also write a note of gratitude.

45

:

Yes.

46

:

I mean, actual pen and paper.

47

:

I am a big lover of paper and I

still have sticky notes and cards

48

:

from bosses and coworkers for.

49

:

Helping with a project or

doing a great job on a project.

50

:

If you're the receiver

of these notes of things.

51

:

Keep them all in one place,

like a folder to look through

52

:

when you're having a bad day.

53

:

I'm.

54

:

Actually looking at one right

now from my friend, Maryland.

55

:

And it is an orange

sticky note and hangs out.

56

:

In the bottom of my desk drawer.

57

:

And it pops up at the darndest

times often when I need it most.

58

:

So never underestimate the power of a

handwritten note, whether it's a sticky

59

:

note or a postcard or a formal thank you.

60

:

Card.

61

:

The gesture has a lasting impact.

62

:

You could also bring them a small token

of your gratitude and appreciation.

63

:

It shows them that not only

are you grateful for them,

64

:

but that you also see them.

65

:

And that you have taken note of

what they like and who they are.

66

:

One last note about gratitude

while I'd love for you to make

67

:

it an annual holiday tradition.

68

:

There's no reason why you can't carry this

habit of gratitude throughout the year.

69

:

Make it a habit to jot down the

people that made it possible.

70

:

Write down the people

that helped you every day.

71

:

And the people that swooped in

to rescue you when you need it.

72

:

Post.

73

:

After a big project is over consult

your list and sends me emails or.

74

:

Bring in a treat.

75

:

So why is all of this important?

76

:

Why all the gratitude.

77

:

Studies show that expressing gratitude

increases performance and also makes for

78

:

happier and healthier work relationships.

79

:

Gratitude can also be contagious,

appreciating someone can set emotion,

80

:

a domino effect of gratitude.

81

:

And couldn't the world use a

little more of that right now.

82

:

So as you gather around your Thanksgiving

table this year, Don't forget to also

83

:

set a place for gratitude at your desk.

84

:

Start with a small gesture

and watch how it grows.

85

:

Next let's talk about

the visitor experience.

86

:

You know that I think every

museum needs to work to create.

87

:

Annual events and traditions

for its community.

88

:

You want visitors to come back to your

museum and bring a friend and establishing

89

:

an annual event is a great way to do that.

90

:

It's also a chance to showcase your

museum's collection in a different way.

91

:

I have a lot of ideas for this one.

92

:

I'll actually link a blog post in

the show notes with the complete

93

:

list, but here are just a few ideas.

94

:

The first of course is

seasonal decor and exhibits.

95

:

Welcoming visitors with

festive decorations

96

:

that reflect your museum's theme can be.

97

:

Such a great way to just change

things up during the holidays.

98

:

If you're a historical museum,

maybe use traditional holiday decor.

99

:

That.

100

:

Transport guests to another era.

101

:

If you're an art museum.

102

:

Maybe you play with winter

inspired installations.

103

:

If you're a zoo or a nature center.

104

:

Maybe you choose a theme that is

nature or conservation inspired.

105

:

You might even want to create

a seasonal themed mini exhibit.

106

:

The second idea.

107

:

Is to host holiday themed tours.

108

:

Now if your museum offers

guided tours already consider

109

:

adding a holiday twist to them.

110

:

Incorporate seasonal

stories or artifacts or.

111

:

Artwork related to winter

celebrations and give visitors a

112

:

fresh perspective on your collection.

113

:

I love the idea of offering special.

114

:

Evening.

115

:

Or candlelight

116

:

tours during this time of year.

117

:

The third idea is to plan

interactive family activities.

118

:

The holiday season is a time when families

are looking for things to do together.

119

:

So consider family-friendly

activities like crafts, hollandaise,

120

:

scavenger, hunts, or even

interactive storytelling sessions.

121

:

These types of activities can

be fun for all ages and provide

122

:

hands-on learning experiences

that parents and kids will love.

123

:

Another idea is to collaborate with

local businesses for holiday events.

124

:

Share the responsibility.

125

:

Collaborate with those local, businesses

to create a holiday market or.

126

:

An event series that

draws in the community.

127

:

You could even invite local

artisans to set up booths or

128

:

partner with a nearby bakery.

129

:

And sell festive treats onsite and

this kind of partnership can increase

130

:

foot traffic and make your museum a

hub for local holiday festivities.

131

:

And it's a great way for both of

you or for all of you to share

132

:

audiences, to borrow audiences.

133

:

It could be a holiday open

house with free admission.

134

:

And you can feature pop-up vendors

or live music or seasonal snacks.

135

:

For a really fun.

136

:

Festive day.

137

:

Another idea.

138

:

Is to send visitors home

with a lasting memory.

139

:

Give visitors something to

remember their visit by.

140

:

You could offer a small

holiday themed take away.

141

:

It could be as simple as a holiday

postcard featuring one of your exhibits.

142

:

Or you could set up a photo

booth where visitors could snap

143

:

pictures with festive props.

144

:

Small tokens like this create really

positive associations with your museum.

145

:

And it gives the visitors

a reason to come back.

146

:

Okay.

147

:

So we've talked about how to

make your museum a special place.

148

:

Bye.

149

:

Giving, thanks for your team.

150

:

And we've talked about things

that you can do for your visitors.

151

:

The third thing.

152

:

I want to talk about is working

together to give back to the community.

153

:

The holidays are the perfect

time to focus on giving back.

154

:

And I really think that museum teams

are uniquely positioned to make a

155

:

positive impact in their communities.

156

:

Working in a museum means you're

already committed to preserving

157

:

history and culture art.

158

:

So why not extend that commitment?

159

:

By supporting those in need.

160

:

I have a few ideas to help museum teams.

161

:

Make the season a bit brighter

by volunteering together.

162

:

The first idea is to organize a team

volunteering day you can consider

163

:

scheduling a team volunteering

day where staff could spend a few

164

:

hours helping at a local charity or

participating in a community event.

165

:

You could serve meals, wrap

gifts for children, organized

166

:

supplies at a food bank.

167

:

Look for charities that align

with your museum's mission.

168

:

For example, if your museum

focuses on history, volunteer with

169

:

a historic preservation society.

170

:

For an art museum and consider

partnering with an arts, nonprofit

171

:

that provides free art

supplies to children.

172

:

Another idea is to collect

donations for a local cause.

173

:

Creating a donation drive is a simple and

effective way to support your community.

174

:

You could create a friendly

competition between departments

175

:

to see who can collect the most.

176

:

Invite museum visitors to help

to, and set up a collection area.

177

:

At your museum's entrance, you could

offer free or discounted admission.

178

:

If museum visitors bring a donated item.

179

:

And don't forget to use your

museum, social media and

180

:

newsletters to get the word out.

181

:

Another way is to adopt a family instead

of exchanging gifts among coworkers,

182

:

consider adopting a family in need.

183

:

Or supporting a local charity by

buying gifts from their wishlist.

184

:

Your team can collectively purchase gifts.

185

:

Wrap them.

186

:

And deliver them to the charity.

187

:

Another way is to host a workshop

or event to benefit a nonprofit.

188

:

Museums are full of unique talents

and resources, and those can be.

189

:

Harnessed for a good cause you

could use your space to have.

190

:

Host a holiday workshop or a craft night.

191

:

And then.

192

:

Give the proceeds to charity.

193

:

It's a wonderful way

to share your mission.

194

:

While also giving back to the community.

195

:

I have some more ideas in

a blog post on my website.

196

:

So I'll also leave that in the show notes.

197

:

To sum up.

198

:

The holiday season offers museums.

199

:

So many opportunities to create

memories for your staff and your museum.

200

:

And.

201

:

These traditions become part

of your story and they help

202

:

your visitors and your staff.

203

:

Fall in love with your museum.

204

:

And having that support creates a lasting.

205

:

Legacy.

206

:

Per year museum.

207

:

Thanks so much for joining me today

for this really special episode.

208

:

If you try it and the, of these

ideas, I'd love to hear about them.

209

:

You can join the love, my museum,

Facebook group, and tell us all about it.

210

:

I'll leave that link in

the show notes as well.

211

:

Happy holidays, everyone.

212

:

I'll see you next time.
