Transcripts

Xhafer:

Hey listener just a quick content warning.

Xhafer:

This episode of Babylon five deals with torture abuse and abuse of power dynamics.

Xhafer:

So if that is something that is going to.

Xhafer:

Not make you feel good, listening to a podcast that we hope makes you

Xhafer:

feel good when you listen to it, just go ahead and skip this one.

Xhafer:

We'll be here next week.

Xhafer:

We understand.

Laura:

Hello and welcome to who are you?

Laura:

It's a Babylon five.

Laura:

Watch cast by a couple of strangers now, friends.

Laura:

Who are continuing to get to know each other over one of their

Laura:

favorite shows from their childhood.

Laura:

Babylon five.

Laura:

I'm Laura.

Xhafer:

And I'm sure a

Xhafer:

fair.

Laura:

And today I get to ask your fair.

Laura:

Who are you?

Xhafer:

Oh, we haven't done

Xhafer:

this in a

Laura:

Oh, and I know, and I should've like, because we get a

Laura:

good, like, who are you in this one?

Laura:

I should have like, tried to mimic that.

Laura:

Oops.

Xhafer:

There's a lot of good who

Xhafer:

are using this

Laura:

There really

Xhafer:

So when we launched the segment back in season one, I talked

Xhafer:

a bit about JMS his college years and why he chose this question and it's.

Xhafer:

Significance in the history of psychology and psychiatry.

Xhafer:

I it's one of them and it might be my matter, which I don't know.

Xhafer:

Um, But.

Xhafer:

I am not an expert.

Xhafer:

But This is the episode where that comes

Xhafer:

full swing.

Laura:

It really does.

Laura:

Like I was thinking about that story.

Laura:

You told us that whole time during, during the big scenes,

Xhafer:

And actually.

Xhafer:

When I read when I did the research, initially I read that story when we

Xhafer:

just talked about the segment and the importance of that question.

Xhafer:

That story was actually in my season episode

Xhafer:

guide.

Laura:

Oh for this episode.

Xhafer:

For this episode.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Makes sense.

Xhafer:

But who am I?

Xhafer:

Well life's been going through some changes and I'm hitting

Xhafer:

one of those big ones here.

Laura:

Oh boy.

Xhafer:

right now.

Xhafer:

Friday was the last day of me doing my old job at my current employer.

Xhafer:

And Monday is my first day at my new job at my current

Xhafer:

employer.

Laura:

Congrats.

Xhafer:

Thank you.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I'm completely changing divisions and the scope of what I do

Xhafer:

and the people they interact with.

Xhafer:

And it's going to Never completely new thing for me, but a very new

Xhafer:

thing for so I think I've mentioned before I work in information

Xhafer:

technology.

Laura:

Mm.

Xhafer:

And I was a people leader before.

Xhafer:

Between direct and indirect reports I had about 50 people reporting up to me.

Xhafer:

At various levels and points of their career from entry.

Xhafer:

Two.

Xhafer:

People who were effectively going to be my next peer, once someone in my position

Xhafer:

moved away.

Laura:

Yeah, that's a lot of people.

Xhafer:

It's it's a fair bit.

Xhafer:

And I mean, If you look at us operations for my division, it was about 5%.

Xhafer:

Of the company.

Laura:

Yikes.

Xhafer:

which is intimidating.

Xhafer:

It's, it's not a small number and I've been in leadership

Xhafer:

for most of my adult life.

Xhafer:

I have, what are we at right now?

Xhafer:

15 years of leadership experience.

Xhafer:

And I'm, you know, in my late thirties, So I've been doing this most of my career.

Xhafer:

I've been a leader of one variety or another.

Xhafer:

But it's been a big part of my life and my career.

Xhafer:

I find it incredibly rewarding.

Xhafer:

I love.

Xhafer:

Being a leader Not for the normal reasons, but I love helping people grow.

Xhafer:

It's one of the most rewarding things in my life.

Xhafer:

Is to help someone achieve their potential to better themselves.

Xhafer:

To just be the best version of themselves personally, professionally.

Xhafer:

And I take so much joy in that.

Xhafer:

And as a leader, as, especially in my current company, I've probably

Xhafer:

gotten to promote some 20, 25 people over the last three or four years.

Xhafer:

And it's been super rewarding and I really love it.

Xhafer:

I love that part of my job.

Xhafer:

It is easily the best part of my job.

Laura:

But.

Xhafer:

but Um, what I am moving away from is client-facing

Laura:

Uh,

Xhafer:

I'm not going to have any direct reports in my new role.

Xhafer:

I'm moving to a team of like four people.

Xhafer:

I'm going to be in Excel, jockey.

Xhafer:

I when I redid my calendar on Friday, handing off things to the person

Xhafer:

who was replacing me, who's also someone that started at the company.

Xhafer:

Entry-level that I've been their boss.

Xhafer:

Literally, since I became a leader at this company, they have reported to

Xhafer:

me Through every stage of their career up through replacing As a middle which

Xhafer:

has been super rewarding as well.

Xhafer:

To just.

Xhafer:

Help him grow.

Xhafer:

But when I handed off all my meetings, I went from eight hours a week without

Xhafer:

meetings to an hour and a half with.

Laura:

Wow.

Xhafer:

Oh, I'm gonna have so much time for activities.

Xhafer:

I'm going to get so much stuff done.

Xhafer:

Um, I'm really looking forward to it.

Xhafer:

Like one of my job duties is I'm going to have a couple of hours each week,

Xhafer:

like six to eight hours each week, a day, basically to just do on what I feel needs

Xhafer:

to get done for the good of the company.

Xhafer:

That's on.

Xhafer:

That's one of my actual like list of job It's just like.

Xhafer:

Oh, it's going to be so good.

Xhafer:

I'm going to get so much done.

Xhafer:

I'm going to get so much good.

Xhafer:

Information out there to people.

Xhafer:

About what we do, how we do it and boys to improve it.

Xhafer:

And I'm really looking forward to.

Xhafer:

Just that kind of grand scope of optimization.

Xhafer:

Is really going to make my brain happy is happen.

Laura:

That's living the dream.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

So I'm really looking forward to all that.

Xhafer:

I'm looking forward to not getting phone calls about a server

Xhafer:

being down at 10:00 PM anymore.

Xhafer:

That's going to be great.

Xhafer:

I will be choosing my own hours outside of a handful of like, If

Xhafer:

a VP or a C-level or something's like, Hey, I need you on this thing.

Xhafer:

I need you to do this thing.

Laura:

Yeah, of course.

Xhafer:

override, but that's, that's what it would take.

Xhafer:

To change my course now, not anything else.

Xhafer:

So.

Xhafer:

I'm looking forward to sleeping in

Xhafer:

tomorrow.

Laura:

Well, congratulations again.

Xhafer:

Thank Yeah, it's, it's a huge change.

Xhafer:

It's going to be.

Xhafer:

A bit to get used to.

Xhafer:

Um, There will be times where I will be sitting on my hands,

Xhafer:

not knowing what to do without.

Xhafer:

Having that set in front of me, for sure.

Xhafer:

It will take some adjustment.

Laura:

I definitely understand that.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

But once we're through that.

Xhafer:

I'm really looking forward to.

Xhafer:

doing doing what I want to do for work.

Xhafer:

It's going to be

Laura:

It will.

Xhafer:

And doing what you want to do and doing what you're chosen to

Xhafer:

do.

Laura:

Yeah, there you go.

Laura:

I was

Xhafer:

what this episode's about.

Laura:

I was stretching for a segue there you

Laura:

did

Xhafer:

I found it.

Xhafer:

I doubt I dug and I found it.

Xhafer:

Um, So we're going to talk about doing what you're destined to

Xhafer:

do with season two, episode 21.

Xhafer:

Comes the inquisitor.

Xhafer:

Um, This episode is a fun tagline, which is the episode.

Xhafer:

That lets me say that Babylon five didn't even jump the shark.

Xhafer:

When Jack the ripper shows up.

Laura:

Yeah, Nope.

Laura:

I mean, that's a, it, it's a very nineties thing, right.

Laura:

For Jack

Laura:

to show up.

Laura:

But.

Xhafer:

Did that start here too.

Xhafer:

I feel like it might've, I don't know.

Xhafer:

But you could tell me that it I'm not putting in that legwork.

Xhafer:

I'm just, I'm not I'm not Googling that I'm not interested in spending that time

Xhafer:

to see Jack the ripper media appearances.

Xhafer:

I know that we had time after time in the late eighties.

Laura:

Yeah, right.

Xhafer:

Which I've referenced a number of

Laura:

You have, I

Laura:

still

Laura:

haven't watched it yet.

Laura:

I'm a bad friend.

Laura:

I'm sorry.

Xhafer:

We have to now that's fine.

Xhafer:

We have to figure out our season three movie break still.

Laura:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

And we also audience listening audience.

Xhafer:

By the time you listen to this episode, We will be preparing slash

Xhafer:

about to record our season to recap.

Xhafer:

So I'm going to say it now.

Xhafer:

I'm gonna say it again.

Xhafer:

At the end of the episode, please send us your thoughts on season two

Xhafer:

of Babylon five so that we can include them as we go overseas and to in.

Xhafer:

Two weeks after this episode

Laura:

Yes.

Laura:

We love to share your thoughts too, and not just talk about

Laura:

our own thoughts all the time.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

So get them in there.

Laura:

We'd love to have them.

Laura:

Okay.

Laura:

So this episode opens up with J car sort of proselytizing in

Laura:

the Zocalo about the, how the

Xhafer:

a good word choice.

Laura:

I hope I said it right.

Xhafer:

I literally have, I have like P scribble and then protesting, written

Xhafer:

next to it in my notes because I couldn't find that word and I really wanted it.

Xhafer:

So I'm glad you're

Xhafer:

done.

Xhafer:

You

Xhafer:

got it.

Laura:

I didn't spell it.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

The beauty of radio.

Laura:

So he's a proselytizing in the Zocalo regarding this great threat

Laura:

that this entire post to everyone.

Laura:

Notably a human stands up and says their beef was with you.

Laura:

Not with us.

Laura:

Get

Xhafer:

Yeah, we're humans.

Xhafer:

We're fine.

Xhafer:

Nah.

Laura:

Like, we're all cool here.

Laura:

And of course Chikara objects to this, but a NARKN objects to his,

Laura:

his basically like public begging is kind of how he sees this.

Laura:

I think.

Laura:

He drags him off

Laura:

to a meeting.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Meanwhile, a dilemma encounters, cos she was like, Hey, we're not

Xhafer:

really sure about the whole EU thing.

Xhafer:

So an inquisitor is coming to make sure if you survive.

Xhafer:

dun.

Xhafer:

dun.

Laura:

Sounds very ominous and she seems a little surprised because no

Laura:

one expects the Orlon inquisition.

Xhafer:

Uh, That is an excellent joke.

Xhafer:

Good job.

Xhafer:

Um, after.

Xhafer:

After theme, we cut to Sheridan's office and Dylan is like, look, I need you to

Xhafer:

let this guy through, but I don't know who it is, what he looks like, what he'll be

Xhafer:

arriving on or any information about him.

Xhafer:

So maybe just like, let everyone through space TSA for awhile.

Xhafer:

Uh, How we know this was made pre nine

Laura:

Yeah, no kidding.

Laura:

I like that she had linear have a little squabble in here about, you

Laura:

She, she characterizes how cost feels as doubting and linear says,

Laura:

no, he just wants confirmation, but I'm I'm team Dolyn on this.

Laura:

I think.

Laura:

Doubting and wanting confirmation are the same thing,

Xhafer:

I mean, they're real close.

Xhafer:

I would say in this regard they are a hundred percent the same thing.

Laura:

Sometimes they just live next door, but today they're in the same house.

Laura:

Right?

Xhafer:

Yeah, a hundred percent.

Xhafer:

They're like when you go to the hotel,

Xhafer:

And there's the two rooms next to each other that have the door you can open

Xhafer:

to kind of make the two rooms, one room.

Xhafer:

That's doubting and wanting confirmation and the doors are open in this scenario.

Laura:

Yes.

Laura:

Agree.

Xhafer:

After this, we get an ultra closeup arm steel that has

Xhafer:

the worst filter on the gram.

Laura:

Oh, my

Laura:

gosh.

Xhafer:

happening here in Chicago has the same amount of neck as the

Xhafer:

criminologist from Rocky horror.

Laura:

And then this arms dealer he looks like, but definitely

Laura:

does not sound like Phil Collins.

Laura:

Is he Doing a voice you think, or is this just

Laura:

his

Laura:

voice?

Laura:

He's gotta be doing it.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Anyways, a Dzhokhar's real upset about inflation, but

Xhafer:

buys a bunch of guns anyways.

Xhafer:

Uh, This is a tales all the time.

Xhafer:

And guns.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

lobby.

Xhafer:

And rush.

Xhafer:

And Hey, that's the first time you thought about rush Limbaugh since he died, which

Xhafer:

just goes to show his actual impact on

Laura:

There it is.

Xhafer:

Got my leftist joke and

Xhafer:

what uh, um,

Laura:

I like that.

Laura:

Dzhokhar points out in this.

Laura:

That these are the weapons we sold you guys.

Laura:

Years ago.

Laura:

And now you're selling them back to us and inflation.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I'm a bit aghast at that to be perfectly

Laura:

It seems like these are going to be obsolete, right?

Xhafer:

Well, yes, technologically speaking, I'm sure they're obsolete,

Xhafer:

which is probably why he has

Laura:

Oh,

Laura:

good

Laura:

point.

Xhafer:

But we know Dzhokhar sold these to like earth gov.

Laura:

Oh, yeah.

Xhafer:

And that is not a representative of earth gov in there.

Xhafer:

That is just a shady

Xhafer:

arms dealer.

Xhafer:

So he's like, Hey, I sold your people, these guns, it's all like, yeah.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Xhafer:

You sold the U S military.

Xhafer:

These guns 20 years ago.

Xhafer:

And now I not, the U S military is selling the back to you.

Xhafer:

I can appreciate how you would find the symmetry in that checar.

Xhafer:

But as the arms dealer.

Xhafer:

You have to be mistaken for someone else.

Laura:

Yeah, earth gov has kind of turned you away.

Laura:

Dzhokhar.

Laura:

Now you could get stuck with dealing with the shady Phil Collins.

Xhafer:

Uh, Meanwhile, Alon ship jumps to B five and Sheraton goes

Xhafer:

to greet the arrival at space TSA.

Xhafer:

To his surprise.

Xhafer:

It's a human in a top

Xhafer:

hat.

Laura:

I

Laura:

called him

Laura:

a Moriarty clone.

Laura:

He looks like a little more.

Laura:

He already doesn't.

Laura:

He like.

Laura:

We've got big vibes.

Laura:

So Sheridan tries to get, you know, this Moriarty to tell How he knows

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

and he

Xhafer:

preacher Rick a tour.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Preacher, Rick, you don't have to give me that reference.

Xhafer:

Oh, that is.

Xhafer:

So at the college I went to.

Xhafer:

There was a guy who would show up on campus and his name was preacher Rick,

Xhafer:

and he would just, everyone was a center.

Xhafer:

Everyone was just straight

Xhafer:

up.

Xhafer:

Just Southern Baptist style.

Xhafer:

Like.

Xhafer:

Just yelling at everyone.

Xhafer:

Everyone was a and going to hell.

Xhafer:

Uh, If he, if he didn't personally know you.

Xhafer:

It felt like.

Xhafer:

So, yeah, that that's preacher Rick, and this

Xhafer:

is,

Laura:

He's got the

Laura:

vibes down for that.

Xhafer:

So.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

This guy is super judgy.

Laura:

Like they step into the Zocalo and he's, you know, kind of ranting to

Laura:

share it in about immorality and chaos are eternal in the human race.

Laura:

We find out he hasn't been on earth for a long time.

Laura:

1886, I think is when he said he left.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

Uh, Yeah, he's from London.

Xhafer:

In the late 18 hundreds.

Xhafer:

And he's just like, Sheridan's like, Hey, can you cut the cryptic bullshit?

Xhafer:

And they agreed.

Xhafer:

Drop kayfabe.

Xhafer:

And he's just like, look.

Xhafer:

The found me, they showed me the truth.

Xhafer:

It's more than most minds can comprehend.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

And he's all like, so you seen what the look like?

Xhafer:

Hm.

Xhafer:

Wonder why that got dropped in there.

Xhafer:

That couldn't possibly be something timely to remind us

Xhafer:

of being a plot point for next

Xhafer:

episode.

Laura:

And it's not something we've been talking about since like the pilot, right?

Laura:

That no one knows what were loans look like.

Xhafer:

It hasn't been brought up in

Xhafer:

a while and

Xhafer:

I

Laura:

So we had to bring it up here.

Xhafer:

we had to bring it up here.

Xhafer:

Cause you got to tilt your cards a little forward before you play them.

Xhafer:

When you Joe Michael Stravinsky.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So he seen the four lawns.

Laura:

He's basically their servant now.

Laura:

Right?

Laura:

He seems like he only And you won't really say much else about

Laura:

why he's here, what he's going to

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Garibaldi corners, Dakar.

Xhafer:

Who's like, you already know, like what, what, what are you doing here?

Xhafer:

And Alfredo.

Xhafer:

doesn't care about the weapons deal so much as the weapons themselves.

Xhafer:

He doesn't want them to pass through.

Laura:

Fair.

Xhafer:

Yeah, he gives Jakarta data crystal that will let him contact a

Xhafer:

smuggler who was Garibaldi, a favor that will help the non-free a charge.

Xhafer:

when Dzhokhar asks Garibaldi, why he does this.

Xhafer:

He says because he didn't lie to him.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

then he notes that he likes to leave a little

Xhafer:

room for people to disappoint

Xhafer:

him.

Laura:

Yeah, but I feel like Dzhokhar and Garibaldi really like turn a

Laura:

quarter in their relationship here.

Laura:

I don't think they've had.

Laura:

Much of a relationship and because when Garibaldi confronted

Laura:

him, Dakar said, yeah, I did.

Laura:

I did the thing.

Laura:

And he agrees that no weapons should not come through this station.

Laura:

Garibaldi says, all right, you're cool.

Laura:

We can be cool.

Xhafer:

This scene feels a lot like an interaction that Garibaldi would

Xhafer:

have with Alondo in the middle of

Xhafer:

season one.

Laura:

Doesn't it.

Laura:

I've thought the same thing.

Laura:

I thought this is how they were once.

Laura:

But.

Xhafer:

No

Laura:

No more.

Xhafer:

Dylan goes to gray, 19 to meet Sebastian.

Xhafer:

And a gray sector is creepy.

Xhafer:

Y'all.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Great.

Laura:

Sector's creepy.

Laura:

And they had some very like, Gray council beams of light on the floor.

Laura:

Did you notice this when she walks

Laura:

in?

Xhafer:

did.

Xhafer:

It was very reminiscent of the great council chambers.

Xhafer:

Right down to the amount of fog machines that can explain how spirit Halloween

Xhafer:

can afford all that storefront.

Laura:

We went to spirit Halloween this weekend.

Xhafer:

Did you.

Xhafer:

It's October.

Xhafer:

So.

Laura:

It's October.

Laura:

That was our October 1st thing.

Xhafer:

I have not thought about Halloween at all.

Laura:

You'll get there.

Xhafer:

We're going as the Phantom of the opera and a chandelier

Xhafer:

as our couple's costume.

Laura:

Who's the chandelier.

Xhafer:

Yeah, the chandelier.

Xhafer:

It's the real love story and Phantom

Xhafer:

of the opera.

Laura:

Yeah, obviously.

Laura:

Her degree.

Laura:

So Sebastian Comes up and confronts Dylan.

Laura:

And he gives her like these pain manacles.

Laura:

That he's going to use for their discussion.

Laura:

And

Xhafer:

Like she can take them off at any time, but if she does shit loses.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Uh, Then she's not the one, right.

Xhafer:

yeah, some real power Dynamic stuff here.

Xhafer:

And then they do the intro to our podcast.

Xhafer:

But with more electrocution and lemon

Xhafer:

grass,

Xhafer:

same amount of

Xhafer:

SAS.

Laura:

A lot more

Laura:

electrocution.

Xhafer:

A lot more electrocution than we use.

Laura:

The first, like three answers she gives, she gives like her name.

Laura:

She gives a title.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

And her familial relationship, and these are all bad answers.

Laura:

These are all

Xhafer:

Yes.

Laura:

don't know if she gets sapped

Xhafer:

we've used.

Xhafer:

It's not good radio Dylan.

Xhafer:

I can tell you that having a bit of experience making radio

Xhafer:

based off the question, who are you, I can tell Boring answers.

Laura:

So those are all bad answers.

Laura:

And I don't know.

Laura:

I don't think he's zapping her yet during these

Laura:

right.

Xhafer:

I think There's There's some light zapping.

Xhafer:

Along with the Ana acceptables.

Laura:

So basically she's giving answers that are.

Laura:

How other people.

Laura:

Relate to her or named her or something.

Laura:

And he wants.

Laura:

To here.

Laura:

Who she is from her own words.

Laura:

So I thought

Laura:

that was interesting.

Xhafer:

He is not convinced that Dylan is a true member of the blues brothers band.

Laura:

Sebastian tells her he's been testing people for

Laura:

years and they've all broken.

Laura:

Their they're all not chosen ones.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

He's he's done this dance a number of times.

Xhafer:

And when he's done being a shitty power tripping, Dom who doesn't

Xhafer:

know what aftercare is to her, she won't think she's special

Xhafer:

either.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

He's a very sinister.

Xhafer:

Yes.

Xhafer:

I I mean, you're not supposed to like him.

Xhafer:

He's a shitbag.

Xhafer:

He's literally one of the most famous shitbags in history.

Xhafer:

So.

Xhafer:

Cheers.

Laura:

I realized that we haven't talked about this actor at all.

Laura:

And I feel like we should.

Xhafer:

I have no Notes on this

Xhafer:

actor.

Laura:

I looked him up.

Laura:

Wayne Alexander.

Laura:

Oh, yes.

Laura:

So he's going to be somebody else later as well.

Laura:

won't spoil that for anybody.

Laura:

Uh, what's really disappointing for me about Wayne Alexander.

Laura:

Is that this man is definitely not British.

Laura:

I was very fooled where you fooled.

Xhafer:

Not.

Laura:

No.

Xhafer:

It didn't really sound it's.

Xhafer:

Well, the thing is, is it's supposed to sound old, British.

Xhafer:

And so I guess.

Xhafer:

There it wasn't like, but I've never heard someone from actual

Xhafer:

18 hundreds, London speak.

Laura:

Sure.

Xhafer:

I

Xhafer:

don't know what it's supposed to sound like.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

This man is from San Joaquin valley.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

But he's got one of those faces.

Laura:

That's very long.

Laura:

And.

Laura:

Easily made gaunt with makeup.

Laura:

And it just, you can just play up the sinister so well with him.

Xhafer:

Yep.

Laura:

So we're going to see him again later.

Laura:

We'll point it out when he comes up.

Xhafer:

Uh, we come back.

Xhafer:

To veer.

Xhafer:

Dodging Suntory asking for favors only to be in an awkward elevator ride with your

Xhafer:

car.

Laura:

Oh, yeah, he like ducks.

Laura:

This guy, he like dismisses him.

Laura:

This guy is not getting any favors from Londo.

Xhafer:

Bye.

Laura:

Gets into an elevator, gets a second to breathe.

Laura:

And then whoops.

Laura:

He's alone.

Laura:

Yeah, he's alone in an elevator with J car.

Laura:

The scene really gets me.

Laura:

It could be severe is so sincere.

Laura:

He really.

Laura:

Means it, when he tries to apologize to Dzhokhar.

Xhafer:

And we, as an audience know that because we've seen him encourage

Xhafer:

Alondo to not do these things.

Xhafer:

For two seasons.

Xhafer:

You know, all of the season of Londo being a jackass.

Xhafer:

So we know that veer is earnest when he says, I don't do this stuff.

Xhafer:

And when he apologizes checar for what's happened to his people, he is earnest.

Xhafer:

But your car is not wrong in

Xhafer:

his response.

Laura:

neither.

Laura:

neither.

Laura:

of

Xhafer:

knife.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Cuts open his hand and for every drop of blood that spills

Xhafer:

from his hand, he says, dead.

Xhafer:

Dead dead, And he, you know, if your apologizes Jakarta.

Xhafer:

I asked him how he can apologize to the dead.

Xhafer:

Veer says he can't in Dakar says that means he can't forgive.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

The scene is really powerful.

Laura:

Both of these actors did an amazing job.

Xhafer:

the

Xhafer:

scene was great.

Laura:

You can see.

Laura:

Veers frustration with being a nobody.

Laura:

he tried to talk one, two out of it.

Laura:

He really did, but his apology means nothing to Jakarta the

Laura:

fact that he tried to talk him out of, it really means nothing.

Laura:

You're still a bunch of dead people.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

You feel for both of them?

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I mean, they shelled the planet for four

Xhafer:

days.

Xhafer:

Like.

Xhafer:

I don't know how anyone is alive.

Xhafer:

Like just that amount of asteroids raining down on a planet.

Xhafer:

Can you imagine?

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

But anyways, back in Babylon fives, worst sex dungeon.

Xhafer:

Sebastian is starting to get a little trigger, happy on the tens unit.

Xhafer:

Well telling Dylan to expect the impossible and then be

Xhafer:

surprised it doesn't happen.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

He's he like mocks her a lot.

Laura:

He wonders.

Laura:

Aloud, whether he's a killer of dreams or a protector of the public.

Laura:

Good.

Laura:

Which I thought was interesting.

Laura:

He seems to.

Laura:

To wonder this without actually questioning it at all.

Xhafer:

Oh, you mean a white dude?

Xhafer:

Who's self-righteous that?

Xhafer:

Doesn't question himself.

Xhafer:

What.

Laura:

I know we've never seen those before.

Xhafer:

Especially, not in 18 hundreds, London.

Laura:

Oh, my God.

Laura:

For real.

Laura:

Oh boy.

Laura:

He asked the third

Laura:

question.

Laura:

Do you remember a third question that we got.

Xhafer:

Where are you

Xhafer:

now?

Xhafer:

That, that

Laura:

you here?

Xhafer:

was lost.

Xhafer:

Okay.

. Laura:

Why are you here?

. Laura:

I thought that was a good one.

. Laura:

And this is where it gets really contentious.

. Laura:

It seems like.

Xhafer:

Well, she acknowledges that she's questioned if she's

Xhafer:

right about her having a destiny.

Xhafer:

Throughout all this, and he's all like, oh, positive reinforcement.

Xhafer:

You get a break for 10 minutes.

Laura:

To like lay on the ground and cry, I guess.

Xhafer:

Yeah, well, whatever you're going to need, he doesn't

Xhafer:

care.

Laura:

Yeah, right.

Xhafer:

He truly doesn't.

Xhafer:

Meanwhile Dzhokhar is dealing with being questioned by some

Xhafer:

rank and file again again, again.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

This time, it's the purple drowsy.

Laura:

Pur purple draws these guns.

Laura:

Undercover.

Laura:

Uh, Questioning Dzhokhar's competence.

Laura:

For the many, many at the time.

Laura:

In a regular Nard meeting Jakarta promises to get a message through to his family.

Laura:

And exchange for them.

Laura:

Yeah, adhering to his leadership.

Laura:

Finally.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

for reals.

Laura:

Listen to me this time.

Laura:

You guys, if I can get this thing done.

Xhafer:

We go back to Babylon fives from your golf club, but at

Xhafer:

6:00 AM, as Sebastian tells Dylan.

Xhafer:

That her problem is her ego.

Xhafer:

She counters that he's a weak said, man, who never had the ability or strength.

Xhafer:

Or will to achieve their dreams.

Xhafer:

And so he lashes out at those who dream to convince them and hence

Xhafer:

That he is a failure because no one is able to do what he felt.

Xhafer:

He was promised.

Xhafer:

And pretty much the same story as every alpha bullshit Dom

Xhafer:

I've ever When you question one of these fucks, they just lash

Laura:

Mm.

Laura:

Yeah, he's apps are a bunch.

Laura:

He's absolutely Bunche threatened to stop her heart.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

I wonder whose ego is the problem.

Laura:

Really, sir.

Xhafer:

Hmm.

Xhafer:

Hmm.

Laura:

This is very telling.

Xhafer:

Right.

Laura:

Stop telling on yourselves guys.

Xhafer:

They Jakarta goes to Sheridan for help knowing it's in their

Xhafer:

best interest to have him remain in charge of the night on the station.

Xhafer:

And Sheridan decides to send the Rangers in.

Laura:

We're going to get them out on their first mission

Laura:

to be, we won't see it, but

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

They're going to do the thing.

Laura:

We're not going to forget that they're around.

Xhafer:

That's also going to be important for later.

Laura:

So Linear finds Dylan.

Laura:

and is concerned about her health.

Laura:

She's not looking so great, right?

Laura:

She's pretty upset and physically harmed.

Laura:

Sebastian starts to return.

Laura:

We hear that.

Laura:

Tap tap.

Laura:

Top of the cane.

Laura:

Oh, so when you're hurries off and find Sheridan, he begs Sheridan to defy cosh.

Laura:

And go save Dylan because he thinks that she's being killed.

Xhafer:

Now upon viewing this.

Xhafer:

Uh, And not remembering all of the exact details of this interaction.

Xhafer:

I was kind of low key convinced that linear wasn't really there

Xhafer:

and that this was Sebastian.

Xhafer:

Further torturing Dylan with a little bit

Laura:

Oh, I mean, you can read it that way, right?

Xhafer:

Until we see linear go out and actually

Xhafer:

get Sheraton.

Xhafer:

Um, in which case it's probably actually

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

I

Laura:

mean, you could, you could say that like he's meddling and

Laura:

trying to get him in there, but,

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

It does seem like really linear as far as I can tell.

Xhafer:

So Uh, linear goes, gets shared and shared and shows And

Xhafer:

Sebastian's just like fucking, finally, dude, I've been waiting

Xhafer:

Uh, he then ties Sheraton up and starts giving him shit with

Xhafer:

his invisible whip cane part.

Xhafer:

This is a new thing that we only see only Sheridan gets whipped when he's tied

Laura:

And the, the electricity affects across his face are just so convincing.

Xhafer:

Yeah, there's no electricity coming out of the cane.

Xhafer:

We don't see a whip.

Xhafer:

We don't get the like Frankie TNG thing going on.

Xhafer:

We just see a really bad.

Xhafer:

Photoshop, glossy and blur all overshared

Xhafer:

in space.

Xhafer:

A

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah, exactly.

Laura:

Oh, I thought this was interesting.

Laura:

So in here, you know, Sheridan gets to do one of his great go to Hills.

Laura:

Cause I think he tells people to go to hell a lot.

Laura:

I I feel like we get multiple audio clips of shared and

Laura:

telling people to go to hell.

Laura:

We had Garibaldi earlier mentioned to Jakarta, you know, if you bring these

Laura:

weapons here, This place will go to Dzhokhar says we're already in hell.

Laura:

And it's the inquisitor also says, this is hell.

Laura:

It was like very interesting that are there Garibaldi shared in combo both.

Laura:

You know, Don't believe they're in hell or, you know, they make reference to hell

Laura:

and somebody else is like, already here.

Xhafer:

Or ready there Sheridan offers to sacrifice himself, to

Xhafer:

save Dylan and Dylan in turn offers herself as sacrifice to save.

Xhafer:

So Sheridan.

Xhafer:

And Dylan goes on a speech here.

Xhafer:

That's really great.

Xhafer:

There causes life one or a billion.

Xhafer:

She's unafraid of death.

Xhafer:

Her body is just a shell.

Xhafer:

You know, I do this, not for fame, not for glory.

Xhafer:

I do this to save life.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

And Sebastian is just like, oh, Hey, you said the magic words.

Xhafer:

Torture's over.

Xhafer:

The handcuffs vanish.

Xhafer:

Everyone's instantly freed and he, uh, smoke bombs and that appears at the

Xhafer:

exit.

Laura:

Yeah, you like teleports to the, the big round portal thing.

Laura:

Nice round vault door.

Laura:

Very cool.

Laura:

So yeah, they have a quick

Laura:

And uh, may start to leave.

Laura:

But yeah, Sebastian stops him and he basically says, well, you

Laura:

guys have read John three 16 and uh, you're doing So you passed.

Laura:

I think he quotes it to us

Xhafer:

Yep.

Xhafer:

There are the right ones.

Xhafer:

Don't don't question it.

Xhafer:

You are the right ones

Xhafer:

to lead.

Laura:

The right ones in the right place at the right time.

Laura:

In CNC, Sheridan asks Ivanova to Google Sebastian's name and address.

Xhafer:

get that Wiki

Xhafer:

article.

Laura:

Yeah, get out the Wiki on London in 1886.

Laura:

But we cut to Dzhokhar.

Laura:

And he's showing the purple drowsy the video of his home and family.

Laura:

so he satisfied, he satisfied and grateful

Xhafer:

The nerd on the station.

Xhafer:

One questions, your car for like at least eight episodes now.

Laura:

Right.

Xhafer:

I should've counted how many times?

Xhafer:

I don't know that it actually happens again, but

Laura:

It's happened

Xhafer:

of assume.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

It's a historical precedent at this point.

Laura:

Like.

Xhafer:

On his Sheridan, the confront Sebastian.

Xhafer:

And he's all like, yo.

Xhafer:

So I cross referenced your name and your address and the date that

Xhafer:

you left just happens to be the last day of this murder spree.

Xhafer:

How crazy.

Xhafer:

Is that And he goes on a bit of a rant here, Sebastian.

Xhafer:

He was chosen by God to deliver a message and blood for all the world to see.

Laura:

Mm.

Xhafer:

You know, the John's showed him.

Xhafer:

His message was not heard.

Xhafer:

Is holy crusade fell on deaf ears.

Xhafer:

He's paid penance for 400 years and just wants to die.

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

The only, he, they don't remember his message.

Xhafer:

No one remembers.

Xhafer:

The point.

Xhafer:

They don't even remember Sebastian.

Xhafer:

All they remember is Jack.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Creepy.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Who Jack the ripper.

Xhafer:

The

Xhafer:

who are they?

Xhafer:

That they would get these, this guy, right?

Xhafer:

Like who the fuck are the four lines?

Xhafer:

The good guys.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

Getting fucking Jack the ripper, like, come on.

Laura:

It should make you wonder, right?

Laura:

I mean.

Xhafer:

to, I mean, that's the goal really?

Xhafer:

You're supposed to question right now.

Xhafer:

Especially knowing what happens next episode, which I won't spoil it for you.

Xhafer:

One episode ahead,

Xhafer:

dear viewer.

Xhafer:

But hoof.

Xhafer:

You get it, you get some borderline stuff.

Xhafer:

Next episode.

Xhafer:

Let me tell you.

Laura:

It's it's gotta be a, a season ender for Babylon five.

Laura:

So we gotta have some big what's big for lawn stuff.

Xhafer:

Vora on stiff.

Xhafer:

Oh

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So at least he does wish Sheridan that his choices should have better results.

Laura:

You know Sheridan's choices are.

Laura:

choices.

Xhafer:

Right.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

Like so your holy crusade, I hope it goes better than mine.

Xhafer:

It's all like, well,

Laura:

Well, your holy crusade was murdering prostitutes

Xhafer:

I'm I'm going to fight back literal evil in the galaxies.

Xhafer:

So maybe we don't make that compare a sin.

Laura:

Yeah,

Laura:

Yeah, he's still got a little distorted.

Laura:

Oh man.

Laura:

That's a good question.

Xhafer:

Isn't it though.

Laura:

That's the fourth question.

Laura:

What did you

Laura:

think of this episode?

Laura:

Hmm.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

I mean, we got a scale Babylon, one to five.

Xhafer:

Occasionally fuck this episode.

Laura:

The sixth ranking.

Laura:

I remember being a lot more impressed by this episode when I was younger.

Laura:

Um, I remember thinking the Jack the ripper thing was like, whoa.

Laura:

And now it's just like, oh, everybody's done some kind of device like this,

Laura:

not everybody, but a lot of our beloved series have made some kind

Laura:

of device, not necessarily Jack the ripper a big plot twist reveal with

Laura:

some historical figure or some, or.

Laura:

Something like that.

Laura:

I really don't love the torturey stuff.

Xhafer:

Yeah.

Laura:

I don't love the character.

Laura:

It's not fuck this episode bad me.

Xhafer:

Yes, that's actually, my exact note is Walnut a fuck.

Xhafer:

This episode.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

Is this average Babylon five for me?

Laura:

I don't think it's a below average because I think it does serve the story.

Laura:

But I don't think I can give it a four.

Laura:

It's not above

Laura:

average for me.

Laura:

Okay, so you're giving it a four.

Laura:

Do you

Xhafer:

I'm going to give it a four.

Xhafer:

Okay.

Xhafer:

Well, like I said, it's not quite a fuck this episode, but this is probably as

Xhafer:

close as Babylon five gets to a fuck this episode without breaking that boundary

Xhafer:

for me.

Laura:

I can agree with that.

Xhafer:

It's shitty abusive behavior from someone in a forced position of power.

Xhafer:

Which is the exact reason I hate the office.

Laura:

Yeah, I mean, I, I'm never been an office watcher, but I can

Laura:

see what you're talking about.

Laura:

Okay.

Xhafer:

Yeah, I watched W when I got COVID in fall of 2020.

Xhafer:

I binged.

Xhafer:

I was sick for 10 days and I binged the

Xhafer:

office.

Laura:

Huh.

Xhafer:

And I had never watched it before because whenever I'd seen it,

Xhafer:

I'm just like, how is this funny, Michael Scott, the character is.

Xhafer:

So inept as a leader, that it is.

Xhafer:

Abusive.

Xhafer:

Like he's literally terrible.

Xhafer:

Consistently without even realizing And it's, that's not funny.

Xhafer:

That's sad.

Xhafer:

Like it makes me angry as a leader.

Xhafer:

It's like, you're so bad at this job.

Xhafer:

You shouldn't have it.

Xhafer:

You know, it's very Peter And it just drives me mad.

Xhafer:

And so.

Xhafer:

That's why.

Xhafer:

It's almost a fuck this episode for me.

Xhafer:

But it is literally Jack the ripper, like.

Xhafer:

It's not like this is someone that is supposed to be a redeemable character.

Xhafer:

And even, even Sebastian doesn't feel he's a redeemable character.

Xhafer:

He he's paying his pendants for hundreds of years and all he wants.

Xhafer:

Is the release of death.

Xhafer:

He knows he is terrible.

Xhafer:

He.

Xhafer:

Knows he fucked up.

Xhafer:

And he's still terrible and he's still fucking up because that's his role.

Xhafer:

That's what he does for you know, he terrifies people and abuses

Xhafer:

them and is the fucking worst.

Xhafer:

So.

Xhafer:

Because it's that.

Xhafer:

You know, it's not like they had an episode with Hitler where he

Xhafer:

was attempted a redeemable dude.

Xhafer:

Like, that's not what

Xhafer:

this is doing

Xhafer:

at all.

Xhafer:

You know, So it's, it's that for me?

Xhafer:

And so that's why it's not a fuck this episode.

Xhafer:

I think it's good from a character building standpoint Dylan gets the shit

Xhafer:

beat out of her and keep standing up.

Xhafer:

Uh, we get a good developmental moment in the relationship between Sheridan We have

Xhafer:

some excellent stuff with veer in checar.

Laura:

Yes, I do love that.

Laura:

You're right.

Xhafer:

And for that, all that adds up to a four out of five for me.

Xhafer:

But only because it's just barely not a fuck this episode.

Laura:

I think I could give it a reluctant for, because while

Laura:

I may not have necessarily liked this episode, I wasn't supposed

Laura:

to like this episode in some ways.

Laura:

As you pointed out and.

Laura:

It is effective.

Laura:

It is good.

Laura:

So that's, that's my reluctant for, I admit that it's I

Laura:

just don't like Jack, the ripper.

Xhafer:

Yeah, nor should you.

Xhafer:

It'd

Laura:

Yeah.

Xhafer:

that guy.

Xhafer:

Anyways.

Xhafer:

Next episode is our season two finale listener.

Laura:

I'm

Xhafer:

We have season two episode 22, the fall of night.

Xhafer:

Earth reacts to this and Tori's rapid invasion of several worlds.

Xhafer:

But it is not what Sheridan expected.

Xhafer:

Amazing revelations are made about the shadows and the Salons.

Laura:

For lawn stuff.

Xhafer:

Yeah,

Xhafer:

it's a big episode.

Xhafer:

mean, the finales always

Xhafer:

are.

Laura:

it'll be our last episode with the current theme set up.

Laura:

You know,

Laura:

cause we get different

Xhafer:

every season.

Laura:

Yeah.

Laura:

So enjoy it.

Xhafer:

So.

Laura:

I think season three is my favorite too.

Laura:

It's either three or four.

Laura:

I don't honestly remember, but Oh, I'll let you know

Laura:

when we hit that season three.

Laura:

Episode one, if this was the one I remembered is my favorite.

Xhafer:

Yup.

Xhafer:

And this also means that the episode after next is our season two recap.

Xhafer:

Xhafer:
