John:
00:00:00
Welcome to the coaching clinic.
2
:
00:00:01
Now, it's just me by myself today.
3
:
00:00:04
Angie's gone and left me, but don't
worry, she will be back real soon.
4
:
00:00:08
She just had to take a little break
from the show, but Angie will be
5
:
00:00:12
returning for our next episode.
6
:
00:00:14
I wanted to make sure that we
still connected with you this week
7
:
00:00:17
and shared something important.
8
:
00:00:18
So we're going to have a
really short episode today.
9
:
00:00:20
Just going to talk very
quickly about state leadership.
10
:
00:00:23
And if you're not sure what I
mean by that, then stay tuned.
11
:
00:00:27
You won't want to miss it.
12
:
00:01:11
Well, welcome to the show.
13
:
00:01:12
It's so unusual for me to be
recording an episode of the
14
:
00:01:16
coaching clinic without Angie.
15
:
00:01:17
And we do have some great interviews that
we're lining up at the moment as well.
16
:
00:01:22
So we're going to be changing
the format a little bit.
17
:
00:01:24
Okay.
18
:
00:01:24
To bring you some guests and
some different aspects and
19
:
00:01:26
approaches in coaching as well,
beyond just myself and Angie.
20
:
00:01:33
But this week, I thought I'd
take just a few minutes to
21
:
00:01:35
talk about state leadership.
22
:
00:01:36
Now we have on the show talked about state
management before, and these are related.
23
:
00:01:41
State management is about
controlling your own emotional
24
:
00:01:45
state or emotional regulation.
25
:
00:01:46
If you like, might want to
put it in those terms for some
26
:
00:01:49
people that will make more sense.
27
:
00:01:51
And.
28
:
00:01:52
Very often the state leadership is really
about deciding what states you need
29
:
00:01:55
to be in and this may be more relevant
for you in group coaching and training
30
:
00:02:01
Situations rather than one to one, but
I do think it still matters there as
31
:
00:02:05
well In fact, I think it matters really
throughout the whole day one of the things
32
:
00:02:10
I nearly always find is if I don't get
intentional about my Emotional state and
33
:
00:02:16
how I'm feeling I tend to end up with
What I could call, resting, well, maybe
34
:
00:02:22
we'll call it resting bothered face
rather than what I actually call it.
35
:
00:02:26
But, just this look on my face where
I don't look particularly happy.
36
:
00:02:29
I may not look sad, but I might, some
people think I even look angry and
37
:
00:02:32
I'm not, I'm just not really anything.
38
:
00:02:35
And that's usually because I haven't
really done any state management work.
39
:
00:02:40
I'm just kind of letting myself
be me and go through my day.
40
:
00:02:43
Whereas when I take control and
responsibility for that and how I'm
41
:
00:02:48
showing up energetically and decide
how best I want to be now, how I would
42
:
00:02:54
want to be showing up, how I want to be
experiencing my day that has a much bigger
43
:
00:02:58
impact and influence on how I feel and
how I interact with other people as well.
44
:
00:03:03
So I think this is something that.
45
:
00:03:05
doesn't just come up for coaching
sessions, especially more like group work
46
:
00:03:10
and live work, but also really in our
whole day to day life, that we can be far
47
:
00:03:18
more intentional about our own emotional
states, our emotional regulation, and
48
:
00:03:23
to make sure that we are looking after
that, that we're intentional about it,
49
:
00:03:28
that we are not just going through our
lives In, in effect of what's going on
50
:
00:03:34
around us, that we are deciding how we
want to be showing up, who we want to be
51
:
00:03:41
today and each day to be achieving the
outcomes we want, because it's so much
52
:
00:03:45
easier to get good stuff happening, to
have good reactions, good relationships,
53
:
00:03:51
and good interactions and coaching calls
if we are in a good emotional place.
54
:
00:03:57
Now, you would have heard Angie say
before on the show about how if you're
55
:
00:04:00
really not there, if Stuff is going
on in your life and that's going to
56
:
00:04:05
take you out of things and you just
can't pull things together for that.
57
:
00:04:09
Then you are better to be honest about
that and cancel your coaching sessions,
58
:
00:04:15
cancel your events, because it's You
don't, because you're just putting
59
:
00:04:19
on an act and you're going to keep
finding yourself taken away by that.
60
:
00:04:23
Like I want, I'm sure I mentioned this
in a show before about one time when I
61
:
00:04:27
had, um, a notification that I should
never have even looked at when I was
62
:
00:04:31
in the middle of a group coaching call
that my grandfather had died, um, I know
63
:
00:04:37
it was not the best time for me to get
that news and it obviously distracted
64
:
00:04:42
me for the rest of that call that was
all I was thinking about that we're
65
:
00:04:45
gonna have to go to the funeral all the
stuff that starts coming up in in your
66
:
00:04:49
head memories of my granddad and all
that not great when you're trying to
67
:
00:04:53
be present with with an audience trying
to be present with your clients and
68
:
00:04:58
so Yeah, that completely messed up my
own emotional regulation on that day.
69
:
00:05:04
It's so easy to do.
70
:
00:05:05
And if we're not aware of it, if we're not
being conscious and if we're not being,
71
:
00:05:10
if we're not doing this with intention,
then we're leaving it all to chance.
72
:
00:05:15
And so much of life is like that.
73
:
00:05:16
What we don't do with
intention, we leave to chance.
74
:
00:05:19
So I'm encouraging you to take
responsibility for your own state
75
:
00:05:23
management and your state leadership.
76
:
00:05:26
Because how we show up.
77
:
00:05:28
The energy that we appear in in our lives
does have an impact and an influence
78
:
00:05:33
on the people who we interact with and
engage with professional situations and
79
:
00:05:38
even in non professional situations.
80
:
00:05:40
So that's what I want
to leave you with today.
81
:
00:05:42
We'll be back next week talking about
some interesting aspects of coaching
82
:
00:05:45
and maybe how some people perhaps
accidentally end up getting into coaching.
83
:
00:05:50
Coaching.
84
:
00:05:50
You won't want to miss that.
85
:
00:05:51
Angie will be back.
86
:
00:05:52
We'll be in full flow and normal service
will resume at the coaching clinic.
87
:
00:05:56
But for now this week, the doors to
the coaching clinic are closed and
88
:
00:06:00
we'll hope to see you again very soon.
89
:
00:06:02
Take care.
