Shownotes

Trish picks up right where last week left off - and goes one second further.

Stopping the scroll is not the win. Keeping her is the win. And most people lose her right there in the very first line of the caption.

If you've done the work on your hook, if your visual is stopping the scroll, if she's pausing on your content - and then she's gone - this episode is for you. Trish breaks down exactly what's happening in your buyer's brain the moment she stops scrolling, why the first caption line is doing a completely different job than the hook, and the three mistakes that are killing your first line before she ever gets to the good stuff. Then she hands you the one thing your first line actually needs to do - and it's simpler and more powerful than anything you've been taught before.

The hook gets her to stop. The caption gets her to stay. And if your first line doesn't earn the stay, it doesn't matter how good the rest is. She's already gone.

💡 What You'll Learn Inside This Episode

  • Why stopping the scroll and keeping her reading are two completely different wins - and why most people only get one
  • The Z-pattern of how her eye moves from the hook to the caption - and where you're losing her
  • The 3 first-line mistakes that send her straight back to scrolling (and how to spot them in your own content)
  • What "sounds like her inner monologue" actually means in practice - with real before-and-after examples
  • Why you have to hook her twice - once with the visual, once with the caption - and how to make both land

🔥 Mic-Drop Moments

"Stopping the scroll is not the entire win. Keeping her is the win."

"The first line is not where you establish authority. It is where you establish that you see her."

"When your first line reads like something she has already said in her head, she will not be able to look away."

🧠 Quick Reflections for Your Next CEO Reset

  1. Go look at your last five captions - does your first line sound like her inner monologue, or does it sound like your introduction?
  2. Where am I leading with my credentials or my experience when I should be leading with her inner monologue?
  3. Am I hooking her twice - once with the visual and once with the caption - or am I relying on one to do both jobs?

💬 Your Action This Week

Pick one post. Just one. Rewrite only the first two lines. Don't touch anything else.

Get into her exact Tuesday - the thought she's been carrying that she hasn't said out loud, the moment she's too embarrassed to tell her partner, the feeling she doesn't have language for yet. Write that. Post it. Then watch your save rate and your share rate. Data makes decisions, and decisions make dollars.

And if you want Trish to actually look at your content live, join the next Sold Out Offer Challenge — every six to seven weeks, with VIP coaching where she goes deep on exactly this.

Transcripts

Trish:

Last week we talked about the first three seconds, and that determines whether she stops scrolling or if she keeps going.

Trish:

Today, we're going one second further, because stopping the scroll is not the entire win.

Trish:

Keeping her is the win, and most people lose her right there in the first line of the caption Welcome back.

Trish:

I'm Trish Ware, and this podcast is now Why She Buys.

Trish:

If you're brand new, go back and listen to last week's episode.

Trish:

Today is building on it, and you'll get a lot more out of this if you have that foundation.

Trish:

It's called She Has Three Seconds to Decide If You're Worth It.

Trish:

So go listen, come back, and I'll be right here.

Trish:

For those of you who are back, let's go so here's something I notice every single time I do a content audit with a client, every time without fail.

Trish:

A lot of them have figured out the hook, and maybe they're visual strong, eh.

Trish:

The first frame of their reel stops the scroll.

Trish:

They've done that work, and then I get to the caption, and the first line says something about them.

Trish:

Okay?

Trish:

That right there is a huge mistake

Trish:

You've gotten her to stop scrolling.

Trish:

She gave you her attention, and you open with you.

Trish:

And I'm not saying this to be, like, harsh, I get it, but they don't care about you.

Trish:

And I understand this thought of like, "But I have to prove to her that I'm the expert." But I wanna save you the time of figuring out that that doesn't work if your buyer is a mom or a parent or a consumer.

Trish:

The hook and the first caption line do two completely different jobs, and most people treat them like this little, you know, cohesion thing, but they're not.

Trish:

the hook stops her scroll.

Trish:

It answers the question, is this about me?

Trish:

The first caption line keeps her reading, but it answers a different question.

Trish:

She's asking, like, is this worth my time?

Trish:

And that is not the same question, and they require a different answer

Trish:

Let me tell you what's happening in her brain when she stops scrolling.

Trish:

So one of the things I want you to think of, and if you're watching the video, you're gonna see me, I'm drawing a Z. So the hook, then what's happening on screen, and then the bottom layer of the Z is actually your first line of the caption.

Trish:

So she stopped, something worked, the visual text on screen, movement, the… You know, we teach that you have three hooks in the beginning.

Trish:

Something caught her and made her pause, but now she's at a crossroads.

Trish:

She could tap to read or she's gonna scroll, and we have to stop her and get her to read based on that first line.

Trish:

So this is where a lot of people blow it, because they treat the first caption line like an introduction.

Trish:

Like, they have to ease her in, like, they have to set the scene before they get to the thing she actually stopped for.

Trish:

She doesn't need an introduction.

Trish:

She wants the thing.

Trish:

So here is what kills a first line, and I'm gonna be very specific, because I want you to be able to look at your own captions after this and know exactly what to fix.

Trish:

Mistake number one is leading with I. I've been thinking about this a lot lately.

Trish:

I want to share with you blah, blah, blah.

Trish:

I had a client.

Trish:

We talked about this last week.

Trish:

When your first word is I, she has to do a lot of work.

Trish:

She has to figure out if your experience connects to her.

Trish:

She has to figure out if your teaching connects to her, and she's not gonna do the work.

Trish:

She's gonna scroll.

Trish:

The second mistake is, like, a generic setup.

Trish:

As a mom, you know how hard it can be, or motherhood is beautiful but exhausting.

Trish:

Running a business while raising kids is a lot.

Trish:

Yes, those things are all true.

Trish:

They are also true for all the people in your niche, and when something applies to everyone, it feels like it applies to no one specifically.

Trish:

She reads it and she thinks, " Yeah, sure," and she keeps going.

Trish:

Mistake number three is leading with your credentials.

Trish:

Again, this is about you, not about her.

Trish:

So you could say something like, "With 10 years of experience as a IBCLC," or, "As a certified postpartum coach, I've worked with hundreds of moms who…"

Trish:

Whatever.

Trish:

Whatever it is, this is a no-no too.

Trish:

She does not care yet.

Trish:

She'll care after you've earned the right for her to care.

Trish:

The first line is not where you establish authority.

Trish:

It is where you establish that you see her.

Trish:

So what does a first line actually need to do?

Trish:

It needs to sound like her inner monologue.

Trish:

Like, what is she saying to herself?

Trish:

That's it.

Trish:

That is the whole secret.

Trish:

When your first line reads like something she has already said in her head, or said to her bestie, or said to her sister at 2:00 AM, a thought she had when she maybe was alone and hasn't even voiced it to her partner, or a feeling she's been carrying that she doesn't have the language for, she will not be able to look away.

Trish:

Because now you are not just someone she stumbled across, you are someone who gets it, and getting it is the beginning of trust, and trust is the beginning of buying.

Trish:

So here is what you do instead You go back to your BFE, your best fan ever.

Trish:

So if you're hanging out with me, that's your ideal client, the one specific person that you're writing to, and you get into her day.

Trish:

Hers, not all moms, hers.

Trish:

What is she thinking before her feet hits the floor?

Trish:

What did she say to herself in the shower?

Trish:

What moment this week made her feel like she is not a good mom?

Trish:

That is your first line

Trish:

I'll give you one from my world.

Trish:

I was working with someone who helps moms navigate big emotions, like toddler meltdown behavior stuff, and she kept writing things like, " Toddler tantrums can feel overwhelming for any parent." That's true, but it's vague, and it's forgettable, and everyone's saying it.

Trish:

So we changed it to, "You said sorry to your three-year-old this morning again for the fourth time, and you're not sure who is more dysregulated, you or them."

Trish:

That is a specific feeling, an inner monologue.

Trish:

That is the moment she's been carrying that she's not saying out loud, she's embarrassed about.

Trish:

Like, she's embarrassed to tell her mom that she keeps screaming at her toddler, and when she sees that, she's gonna stop the scroll, and she's gonna read the rest because she felt seen.

Trish:

Same woman, same offer, first line written to describe where she's at, which is the B in my BRAVE formula, being seen.

Trish:

Now, here's the other thing I wanna say about the first lines, and this is practical.

Trish:

Most platforms cut the caption after two or three lines, or sometimes even shorter.

Trish:

Instagram does it.

Trish:

Facebook does it.

Trish:

She has to tap more to read the rest.

Trish:

Your first line, somewhere, you know, possibly your first two lines, is all she's gonna see before she decides whether to keep reading.

Trish:

So you have to hook her twice: once with the visual and the hook and the beginning of your reel, and one with the caption, and the second hook has to be just as strong as the first.

Trish:

The way I think about it is this.

Trish:

The visual tells her, "Stop, this is… This might be about you." The hook says, "This is about you." And the caption, that first part of the caption says, "I get it." If your first line doesn't earn the stay, it doesn't matter how good the rest of the caption is.

Trish:

She is already gone, and your caption should be made to keep her reading.

Trish:

So I wanna give you a really fast before and after so you can see this in practice

Trish:

So like here's an example for someone that I've coached.

Trish:

As a sleep coach for moms, I know how frustrating it can be when your baby won't sleep through the night.

Trish:

Here are three things that might keep your baby awake.

Trish:

After we audited it, it's 2:00 AM, you've been in and out of your baby's room four times, you're running on nothing, and you have to be a functional human in six hours.

Trish:

Same information, and you could even dial that down more, but it's the same information, the same offer beneath it, same sleep coach.

Trish:

But one of them starts with this particular mom inside the moment, and the other one is from the outside looking in.

Trish:

She's gonna stop more readily for the second one.

Trish:

She keeps scrolling on the first one, and that is the difference.

Trish:

We want to stop her, we want to have her feel seen and understood, and we want you to stand out from every other expert in your niche.

Trish:

So here's what I want you guys to do this week.

Trish:

Pick one post, just one.

Trish:

Rewrite it, just the first two lines.

Trish:

Don't touch anything else.

Trish:

Deep dive into her exact Tuesday afternoon or Tuesday morning or whatever.

Trish:

Write it so it sounds like something she's thought but maybe never said out loud.

Trish:

She's too embarrassed to tell her partner or a friend.

Trish:

Then post one version on your feed and one as a trial, and let's look at your save rate and your share rate.

Trish:

Data makes decisions, decisions makes dollars.

Trish:

Let the data show you.

Trish:

Now, as always, every six to seven weeks, we do our Sold-Out Offer Challenge, and this is where I deep dive with you, especially if you join as a VIP, and we go over all these things.

Trish:

So go to soldoutofferchallenge.com/soo

Trish:

That way I can actually look at your content.

Trish:

I do that in the Sold Out Offer Challenge.

Trish:

Like I said, the VIPs get live coaching, and we also have the link in the show notes.

Trish:

Next week, we are talking about what happens after she reads the whole caption and still doesn't buy.

Trish:

There's a gap between consuming content and converting, and most people are leaving money sitting in the gap.

Trish:

So next week we're gonna talk about when she stops scrolling, and she's commenting, and she's sending DMs, but she's not buying.

Trish:

So subscribe so you have it waiting when it drops Thank you so much for joining me today.

Trish:

I don't take that lightly, and we are so excited to have you as we transition from Sold Out Sales School to Why She Buys.

Trish:

And that is really important because there's so much more than just selling, even though I'm gonna continue to say when you sell, you sell.

Trish:

So hit subscribe, leave a review or a comment, and follow me on Instagram, @iamtrishware, where we have a series of YAP videos, AKA talking head, talking about exactly how I've built two seven-figure businesses.

Trish:

So I will see you guys again next week.

Trish:

As always, that's your cosmic slap in the booty.

Trish:

I'll see you again Friday.

Trish:

Bye for now
