Speaker:

You’re listening to The Voice of Dog.

Speaker:

I’m Khaki, your faithful fireside companion,

Speaker:

and Today’s story is

Speaker:

“If Only for a Night…”

Speaker:

by Bering, who can usually be found with a book in her hand,

Speaker:

she can be found at FurAffinity under the same username,

Speaker:

showing both stories and commissioned artwork in her gallery.

Speaker:

A long time Science-Fiction fan

Speaker:

this is her first foray into Fantasy, but will

Speaker:

most likely not be the last.

Speaker:

Please enjoy “If Only for a Night…”

Speaker:

by Bering It was dusk after a long autumn day,

Speaker:

in the forest clearing Corrigan sat relaxed with his back against a tree,

Speaker:

a campfire burning before him.

Speaker:

His friend Alana lay with her head resting against his thigh,

Speaker:

absently he ran his fingers through her soft fur.

Speaker:

“That feels nice…”, she murmured drowsily.

Speaker:

He smiled fondly at her,

Speaker:

they had been travelling companions for almost a year,

Speaker:

an odd pair, Human and Kitsune.

Speaker:

Humans were almost everywhere in this land,

Speaker:

the dominant race, and Kitsunes, while not exactly rare,

Speaker:

were far from a common sight.

Speaker:

They received some curious looks,

Speaker:

but people were generally too polite to comment.

Speaker:

They had grown close,

Speaker:

at ease in each other’s company.

Speaker:

She muttered something as he shifted slightly,

Speaker:

trying to find a more comfortable position from his accumulated aches and pains.

Speaker:

He was a sell-sword,

Speaker:

a mercenary. Once he had fought in the army of his King,

Speaker:

but that time was long ago

Speaker:

and very far away.

Speaker:

He had lost count of his injuries

Speaker:

and as he had gotten older

Speaker:

he knew he was slowing,

Speaker:

reactions not as sharp as they had been,

Speaker:

his body less quick to recover.

Speaker:

In truth he had lost the taste for it and wished to put his sword away, but it was all he had known.

Speaker:

He was far from an old man, yet sometimes he felt it.

Speaker:

At the thought his attention returned to her,

Speaker:

he was uncertain how old she was but she was certainly younger than he.

Speaker:

In appearance she looked like nothing so much as an everyday fox,

Speaker:

though markedly larger,

Speaker:

when standing her shoulders came up to his knee,

Speaker:

and he was not a small man.

Speaker:

She had pale blue vulpine eyes

Speaker:

and fur of the purest white,

Speaker:

apart from a patch of black on her rear left leg.

Speaker:

He had once told her

Speaker:

that was where the gods had gripped as she was dipped into the vat of whitened snow during her creation.

Speaker:

She had not been amused,

Speaker:

which in itself he found amusing.

Speaker:

The only real difference from an ordinary fox

Speaker:

was an untidy mane

Speaker:

of human-like hair and the small thumbs on her front paws.

Speaker:

She was awkward using them,

Speaker:

being not nearly as dextrous as human hands,

Speaker:

and didn’t like it when he watched.

Speaker:

She had an unusual accent and her voice was high and sweet,

Speaker:

she spoke with a feminine growl though due to her muzzle had trouble pronouncing certain words.

Speaker:

He liked to tease her about it.

Speaker:

Well he couldn’t speak Kitsune could he?

Speaker:

It was a fair point, though it made him wonder,

Speaker:

did the name of her people or that of their language come first?

Speaker:

He had once asked her

Speaker:

why she had only a single tail,

Speaker:

she had batted him playfully and laughed,

Speaker:

explained that the multiple tails thing was a myth, or at least symbolic.

Speaker:

She had enough trouble keeping a single tail clean,

Speaker:

never mind many of them.

Speaker:

He had never seen her without her cloak and other adornments;

Speaker:

she seemed somewhat self conscious about her body

Speaker:

and always changed clothing away from his sight.

Speaker:

But he had once caught her watching as he washed in an open rock pool.

Speaker:

She had darted away as he turned

Speaker:

and neither had mentioned it to the other,

Speaker:

pretending they were not aware.

Speaker:

She seemed reluctant to talk about her past

Speaker:

but was curious about his.

Speaker:

Once early in their friendship

Speaker:

he had noticed her looking at his sword as he sat oiling it.

Speaker:

Had he used it? Yes, he had used it.

Speaker:

He knew she would have liked to ask more but had sensed she should not press the issue.

Speaker:

Yes he had used it,

Speaker:

more times than he liked to recall.

Speaker:

She was young, trying to appear more mature and worldly than she actually was.

Speaker:

He suspected it was her first journey away from home

Speaker:

and sensed she was a little overwhelmed and uncertain,

Speaker:

which was perhaps

Speaker:

why she had attached herself to him.

Speaker:

Not that he minded,

Speaker:

it was nice to have a travelling companion.

Speaker:

And one so fascinated by the world.

Speaker:

She displayed an open curiosity,

Speaker:

such that he wished

Speaker:

he could see through her eyes,

Speaker:

experience life afresh.

Speaker:

Sometimes she asked the strangest questions.

Speaker:

Last winter on a hard frozen night

Speaker:

they had huddled together in a camp

Speaker:

much like this one.

Speaker:

She had been watching the skies in wonder,

Speaker:

asked why the stars twinkled so.

Speaker:

He had not liked to appear ignorant

Speaker:

and so had made up a reason,

Speaker:

one she had seemed to accept.

Speaker:

But it had bothered him that he had lied to her

Speaker:

and he had sought out a learned man for the correct explanation.

Speaker:

He had told her the truth

Speaker:

and she had seemed pleased.

Speaker:

He was glad, yet wondered

Speaker:

why that was so important to him.

Speaker:

In recent days though

Speaker:

she had seemed quiet and thoughtful,

Speaker:

he was not sure he understood why.

Speaker:

They had been walking along a country lane

Speaker:

when she had suddenly turned to him;

Speaker:

Was he married? No,

Speaker:

he was not married.

Speaker:

Had he ever lain with a woman?

Speaker:

Not for a long time.

Speaker:

He had been surprised by her questions,

Speaker:

had answered before he intended.

Speaker:

It seemed she was going to ask something further,

Speaker:

but she had lapsed back into silence.

Speaker:

She had not brought the matter up again.

Speaker:

He noticed that the fire was nearly out,

Speaker:

burned down to glowing cinders.

Speaker:

He made to rise but she stopped him, a strange look in her eyes.

Speaker:

“Corr…are we friends?”

Speaker:

“Of course we’re friends”,

Speaker:

he answered with a laugh

Speaker:

and went to rise again,

Speaker:

she held him, more firmly this time.

Speaker:

“I mean, are we friends?”

Speaker:

He lay back, unsure where this was going,

Speaker:

“Well certainly we are…”

Speaker:

She rose to her feet,

Speaker:

held his gaze with a strange intensity,

Speaker:

then moved towards him,

Speaker:

stepped carefully onto his body.

Speaker:

Slowly she unhooked his shirt,

Speaker:

spread it wide, stood with small paws on his bare chest.

Speaker:

He made to speak but she shook her head,

Speaker:

then removed her cloak,

Speaker:

dropped it aside.

Speaker:

She shivered as she looked into his eyes, with an uncertain smile.

Speaker:

He had never seen her naked before,

Speaker:

was shocked at how

Speaker:

animal-like she truly was.

Speaker:

“Alana…”, again she stopped him,

Speaker:

nuzzled him gently,

Speaker:

whiskers brushing his new day growth of beard.

Speaker:

She reached lower,

Speaker:

fumbling for his trousers,

Speaker:

he felt himself growing tumescent.

Speaker:

“Alana, don’t…don’t Alana!”,

Speaker:

he pushed her off and she fell heavily.

Speaker:

She raised herself as she lay awkwardly on her side,

Speaker:

face twisted with anguish.

Speaker:

“Alana, I’m sorry…”,

Speaker:

he got to his knees and reached for her,

Speaker:

but she backed away, shaking her head.

Speaker:

He gathered her up,

Speaker:

pulled her towards him, held her tightly

Speaker:

and leaned back again against the tree.

Speaker:

Her small form shook as she wept,

Speaker:

“It’s not fair! It’s not fair!

Speaker:

Why can’t we be together?”

Speaker:

Her sobs had slowly subsided

Speaker:

as she had fallen into an exhausted sleep,

Speaker:

he lay awake for a long time after…

Speaker:

Things were not same in the following days,

Speaker:

she was quiet and subdued,

Speaker:

speaking only in monosyllables,

Speaker:

dull and listless,

Speaker:

walking with her head down.

Speaker:

A distance had grown between them

Speaker:

that had never been there before.

Speaker:

He told her that he had a task to do in a local town,

Speaker:

this was not their planned destination, but she acknowledged the change with a resigned acceptance.

Speaker:

He rented an overnight room in a tavern,

Speaker:

one he had used before and knew the proprietor to be trustworthy.

Speaker:

She had been unhappy to be left alone,

Speaker:

silently wondered what he was hiding from her,

Speaker:

but had accepted when he asked her to trust him.

Speaker:

He kissed her chastely before he left,

Speaker:

leaving her to stare in wonder

Speaker:

at the closing door.

Speaker:

He had been gone a long time,

Speaker:

she had paced the room,

Speaker:

examining every inch of it and its contents,

Speaker:

dozed on the bed, something she had never experienced before,

Speaker:

but never truly slept.

Speaker:

By the early hours of the morning

Speaker:

she had grown worried,

Speaker:

begun to fret…she jumped in surprise as the door swung open, with the creak of unoiled hinges.

Speaker:

“Corrigan?”, she asked, suddenly afraid.

Speaker:

There was someone in the room,

Speaker:

someone not human.

Speaker:

To her eyes her surroundings were clear,

Speaker:

sharply outlined in silver moonlight.

Speaker:

A person was standing there,

Speaker:

yet it seemed he could not quite bring himself to speak.

Speaker:

And somehow she knew…

Speaker:

She leapt lightly off the bed,

Speaker:

approached, a Kitsune…a

Speaker:

male…he was larger and more powerfully built than her,

Speaker:

dark where she was light.

Speaker:

She knew him by scent, and yet it was the eyes that were confirmation,

Speaker:

somehow they always remained unchanged.

Speaker:

“Corrigan?”, she asked again.

Speaker:

“Alana…”, he answered, the word

Speaker:

awkward in his unfamiliar mouth.

Speaker:

“It is truly you…”, she paced around him in awed fascination.

Speaker:

For his part he shivered,

Speaker:

overwhelmed by the strange sensations from his new form,

Speaker:

from her scent, her nearness.

Speaker:

“Is it like this for you always?”,

Speaker:

he asked. She stopped in front of him and smiled,

Speaker:

“Let me show you…”. She rubbed against him,

Speaker:

silken fur on silken fur.

Speaker:

Time no longer held any meaning,

Speaker:

unhurriedly they examined and explored each others naked forms, before they made love,

Speaker:

slowly, gently, passionately…

Speaker:

Afterwards they lay together,

Speaker:

belly against back;

Speaker:

his foreleg lay protectively over her

Speaker:

with their pawed hands entwined.

Speaker:

He whispered in her ear,

Speaker:

“I cannot stay like this…” She didn’t answer,

Speaker:

though he knew that she was listening, “….

Speaker:

“….but here and now…we

Speaker:

are together…” He squeezed her hand and felt a gentle pressure in return.

Speaker:

They slept, two hearts beating as one…

Speaker:

Morning light was streaming through the curtained windows as she jerked awake,

Speaker:

her heart fell as he walked in from the adjoining room,

Speaker:

“Good morning Alana”

Speaker:

Somehow she had hoped…

Speaker:

“Good morning Corr…”

Speaker:

She attempted to smile

Speaker:

but it failed to reach her eyes,

Speaker:

watched as he sat on a nearby chair and began pulling on his boots.

Speaker:

She jumped off the bed,

Speaker:

attempted to ask lightly,

Speaker:

“So…did you like being a Kitsune?”

Speaker:

“It was strange, but nice”, he smiled, warm and genuine,

Speaker:

“I certainly understand you a lot better”.

Speaker:

He noticed her watching his gloved hands,

Speaker:

something he very rarely wore,

Speaker:

and pulled off the leftmost,

Speaker:

showing her a paw-like hand,

Speaker:

fur reaching almost to his elbow.

Speaker:

He turned and lifted his shirt,

Speaker:

a further patch of silky darkness on his hip and side.

Speaker:

She suspected from the awkward way he sat that

Speaker:

he had also retained a nub of a tail.

Speaker:

“I’m sorry…” “Its fine,”

Speaker:

he answered with a smile,

Speaker:

“really I don’t mind.”

Speaker:

Truly he didn’t, his aches seemed to have faded away

Speaker:

and he felt strong and youthful.

Speaker:

Yet his old scars remained;

Speaker:

mementos of remembered pain.

Speaker:

“Besides the Sorceress told me something like this may happen”,

Speaker:

he continued. The chill of fear gripped her heart,

Speaker:

“What price did you pay?”

Speaker:

“Nothing”, he answered,

Speaker:

“She said a pure desire was payment enough.”

Speaker:

He trembled as he stood before the Powers,

Speaker:

yet his answer was firm and

Speaker:

clear, for he spoke the truth,

Speaker:

“I do it for love…”

Speaker:

“Thank you Corrigan…”

Speaker:

His smile grew wider,

Speaker:

“It is I who should thank you Alana”

Speaker:

“For what?”, she asked,

Speaker:

no longer able to hide the tears in her eyes.

Speaker:

He knelt in front of her,

Speaker:

drew her towards him,

Speaker:

held her tightly.

Speaker:

“For being you…” She relaxed and returned his embrace,

Speaker:

resting her head against his chest,

Speaker:

felt the beat of his gentle heart.

Speaker:

Together again, once and for always. ----------------------

Speaker:

Slowly he approached,

Speaker:

laid his sword upon the altar,

Speaker:

stepped back. He raised his eyes,

Speaker:

defiance through his fear.

Speaker:

“Now and forevermore...” ----------------------
