Steph:

Welcome to the Dwelling Place from Aru Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Hickox, first Chronicles

eight through 10, and Psalm 81, 88,

3

:

92 and 93 will be our focus for today.

4

:

As I was reading through these

genealogies yet again, I had a thought

5

:

that whenever you see a woman pop

up in a genealogy, something good is

6

:

about to happen or something important.

7

:

I just thought that that was a line.

8

:

That we can stick in our hats for whenever

we're studying genealogies, you might

9

:

notice that Chapter eight lists four sons

10

:

for Saul, but ish Beeth is not listed.

11

:

He was the one that stayed

home from battle that Abner

12

:

crowned king after Saul died.

13

:

He was known by a different name

as well, so he is still listed.

14

:

Chapter nine Begins, so All Israel

was recorded in genealogies,

15

:

and these are written in the

books of the Kings of Israel.

16

:

And Judah was taken into exile and

Babylon because of their breach of faith.

17

:

Remember that phrase Now, the first

to dwell again in their possessions in

18

:

their cities were Israel, the priests,

the Levites, and the temple servants.

19

:

I've seen the phrase mighty men before

in scripture referring to men that go

20

:

out to battle, but I've never noticed it

21

:

referring to men serving in the temple.

22

:

But verse 13 says, mighty men for the

work of the service of the house of God.

23

:

If you're a mom of boys, that might

be a phrase that resonates with

24

:

you, that you want your boys to

be strong, but to serve Christ.

25

:

And a large section of this Psalm

talks about the gatekeepers of the

26

:

temple, that's especially sweet

to me since we just studied Psalm

27

:

84 and it says, I would rather be a

doorkeeper in the house of my God than

28

:

to dwell in the tents of the wicked.

29

:

We read that there were four chief

gatekeepers who were Entrusted to be

30

:

over the chambers and the treasures

of the house of God, and they lodged

31

:

around the house of God for on them

lay the duty of watching, and they had

32

:

the charge of opening it every morning.

33

:

What a sacred calling.

34

:

This was a day in, day out position,

protecting and guarding the house of God.

35

:

One Chronicles 10 recounts

the end of Saul's life.

36

:

It's quite consistent with the

account we read in for Samuel.

37

:

There is this very important

epitaph at the end.

38

:

So Saul died for his breach of faith.

39

:

He broke faith with the Lord and that he

did not keep the command of the Lord and

40

:

also consulted a medium seeking guidance.

41

:

He did not seek guidance from the Lord.

42

:

Therefore, the Lord put him to

death and turned the kingdom

43

:

over to David, the son of Jesse.

44

:

Saul's life serves as

a warning to all of us.

45

:

That God deeply cares about our obedience

46

:

and how can we obey his

words if we don't read them?

47

:

So good for you, mama, that you keep

sticking with it and congratulations.

48

:

You made it through all those genealogies.

49

:

At the beginning of Chronicles,

give yourself a pat on the back.

50

:

Let's look at Psalm 81 now.

51

:

I just love the beginning.

52

:

Sing aloud to God our strength.

53

:

Shout for joy to the God of Jacob.

54

:

Raise a song, sound the tambourine

the sweet liar with the harp.

55

:

Blow the trumpet at the New Moon

at the full moon on our feast day.

56

:

For it is a statute for Israel,

a rule for the God of Jacob.

57

:

My moody commentary lays out several

literary devices occurring in the Psalms.

58

:

And frequently featured in Hebrew.

59

:

Poetry is parallelism and

there are three main types.

60

:

First, there's synonymous parallelism

where the same idea is repeated.

61

:

But with slightly different phrasing.

62

:

For example, in Psalm one 13, he

raises the pore from the dust and he

63

:

lifts the needy from the ash heap.

64

:

The same idea is repeated, but

then you can have antithetical

65

:

parallelism where there's a contrast.

66

:

Like in Psalm 1 45, 20, the

Lord keeps all who love him,

67

:

but the wicked he will destroy.

68

:

And finally.

69

:

There's synthetic parallelism in which

the lines will be complimentary, but

70

:

not presenting an identical idea.

71

:

Maybe you remember this

line from Psalm 18.

72

:

He trains my hands for battle so that

my arms can bend a bowl of bronze.

73

:

See how those ideas are tied

together, but not quite the same.

74

:

Speaker 61: I appreciate in Psalm

81 that we have this repeating idea

75

:

that God calls us to praise him.

76

:

The psalm was sung at the

beginning of one of their feasts.

77

:

They were called to praise him,

to sing aloud, shout for joy,

78

:

raise a song, blow the trumpet.

79

:

We might think, oh, well,

that was a cultural thing.

80

:

We're just different today.

81

:

And to that, I would say six words.

82

:

Are you ready for some football?

83

:

Our culture still likes

to cheer and shout.

84

:

it has to do with the

object of our affection.

85

:

And I don't think God wants us

screaming at TV screens or at sporting

86

:

events and then standing with our

hands in our pockets for church.

87

:

I love the transparency of God's

heart as Psalm 81 concludes, but my

88

:

people did not listen to my voice.

89

:

Israel would not submit to me, so

I gave them over to their stubborn

90

:

hearts to follow their own councils.

91

:

Oh, that my people would listen to me.

92

:

That Israel would walk in my ways.

93

:

I would soon subdue their enemies

and turn my hand against their foes.

94

:

Those who hate the Lord would

cringe toward him and their

95

:

fate would last forever.

96

:

But he would feed you with the

finest of the wheat and with honey

97

:

from the rock, I would satisfy you.

98

:

This verse means that God would bring

blessing and joy from unexpected places.

99

:

Next we'll look at the only Psalm

that doesn't resolve at the end.

100

:

Psalm 88 is unique, although

there's a lot of lamenting and

101

:

grieving throughout Psalms.

102

:

Generally, the writers point

themselves toward hope by the end

103

:

and what it says about the

heart of God that this chapter

104

:

is still included in scripture.

105

:

Is that the very act of pouring

ourselves out to the Lord is

106

:

a beautiful thing before him.

107

:

The psalmist doesn't turn away even

though the circumstances remain the same.

108

:

And this is a godly example because our

hope is eternal, not circumstantial.

109

:

And even if we find ourselves getting

up from our knees feeling exactly the

110

:

way we did, the moment we bent down.

111

:

God is honored every time you call to him.

112

:

Just so we can understand the depths of

the pain, this Psalm almost was feeling.

113

:

I'll read it in its entirety.

114

:

Oh Lord God of my salvation.

115

:

I cry out day and night before

you let my prayer come before

116

:

you and climb your ear to my cry.

117

:

For my soul is full of troubles

and my life draws near to she.

118

:

I am counted among those

who go down to the pit.

119

:

I am a man who has no strength, like

one set loose among the dead, like

120

:

the slain that lie in the grave, like

those whom you remember no more for

121

:

they are cut off from your hand.

122

:

You have put me in the depths of the pit.

123

:

In the regions dark and deep.

124

:

Your wrath lies heavy upon me, and

you overwhelm me with all your waves.

125

:

You have caused my companions to shun me.

126

:

You have made me a who to them.

127

:

I am shut in so that I cannot escape.

128

:

My eye grows dim through sorrow.

129

:

Every day I call upon you, oh

Lord, I spread out my hands to you.

130

:

Do you work wonders for the dead?

131

:

Do the departed rise up to praise you?

132

:

Is your steadfast love declared in

the grave, or your faithfulness in

133

:

abbadon are your wonders known in

the darkness or your righteousness

134

:

in the land of forgetfulness?

135

:

But I, oh Lord, cry to you in the morning.

136

:

My prayer comes before you.

137

:

Oh Lord.

138

:

Why do you cast my soul away?

139

:

Why do you hide your face from me?

140

:

Afflicted and close to death from

my youth up, I suffer your terrors.

141

:

I am helpless.

142

:

Your wrath has swept over me.

143

:

Your dreadful assaults destroy me.

144

:

They surround me like a flood.

145

:

All day long, they close in on me.

146

:

Together you have caused my

beloved and my friend to shun me.

147

:

My companions have become darkness.

148

:

Does it remind you of

job's, words, though?

149

:

He slay me.

150

:

Yet?

151

:

Will I trust in him?

152

:

Thankfully, Psalms of Praise

abound and Psalm 92 is one of them.

153

:

It is good to give thanks to the Lord to

sing praises to your name almost high,

154

:

to declare your steadfast love in the

morning and your faithfulness by night

155

:

to the music of the loot and the harp

to the melody of the liar for you.

156

:

Oh Lord, have made me glad by your

work at the works of your hands.

157

:

I sing for joy.

158

:

How great are your works?

159

:

So Lord.

160

:

Your thoughts are very deep.

161

:

The stupid man cannot know.

162

:

The fool cannot understand this, that

though the wicked sprout like grass

163

:

and all evil doers flourish, they

are doomed to destruction forever.

164

:

But you, oh Lord, are on high forever.

165

:

For behold your enemies, oh Lord, for

behold, your enemies shall perish.

166

:

All evil doers shall be scattered.

167

:

But you have exalted my horn

like that of the wild ox.

168

:

You have poured over me fresh oil.

169

:

My eyes have seen the

downfall of my enemies.

170

:

My ears have heard the

doom of my evil assailants.

171

:

The righteous flourish like the palm

tree and grow like a cedar in Lebanon.

172

:

They are planted in the house of the Lord.

173

:

They flourish in the courts of our God.

174

:

They still bear fruit in old age.

175

:

They are ever full of sap and green.

176

:

To declare that the Lord is

upright, he is my rock, and there

177

:

is no unrighteousness in him.

178

:

I had the privilege of going

to Hawaii several years ago.

179

:

I remember staring up at the

palm trees during some very windy

180

:

days, being in awe at how much

they could bend without breaking.

181

:

And in a not so coincidental moment, I

opened up my Bible to this very verse that

182

:

the righteous flourish like the palm tree.

183

:

I prayed that whatever storms of life

came that God would make me like a

184

:

palm tree, that I would be able to bend

and withstand the wind not breaking,

185

:

declaring that the Lord is upright and

righteous, let me pray that for us now.

186

:

Heavenly Father, I praise you.

187

:

For each mom listening that they

keep coming back to your word so

188

:

they can obey it and honor you.

189

:

Sustain them and strengthen them.

190

:

Fill them with joy and hope so

that they can give you praise.

191

:

Singing of your steadfast

love and faithfulness.

192

:

Help them to flourish like

the palm trees and the cedars.

193

:

And even when they're bending more than

they feel like they can take, Lord,

194

:

would you provide them with the strength

that they need to stay faithful to you?

195

:

in those hard times, show

them some honey in the rock.

196

:

Leave them a trail of your goodness,

even in those days that begin and

197

:

end with a lament and don't resolve.

198

:

Help our sons to be mighty men for your

service, whether they are in ministry or

199

:

serving in the world, I pray that they

would be bold and humble for your glory.

200

:

And we pray that our daughters with

all of their word count, that you

201

:

created them to fit in each day.

202

:

That their lips would sing you

praise and that they delight to

203

:

bring you the glory that you are due.

204

:

Jesus, we thank you that like the

psalmist, even when you felt completely

205

:

abandoned by your father, that you

were obedient to the point of death.

206

:

You are worthy of all our praise.

207

:

Amen.
