Speaker:And now here's your host Dimple.
Speaker:Dang.
Speaker:Welcome back my Mesmerizing Marketing Tribe.
Speaker:Today is March 8th, 2023.
Speaker:And I'm not sure if you know what day it is, but today is International Women's
Speaker:Day and I thought that it makes sense to put a podcast episode out today about the
Speaker:history of International Women's Day and also what the theme is for this year and
Speaker:what you need to know about it and how you can get involved because it is something.
Speaker:There needs to be more awareness around, and together we can make a difference.
Speaker:So let's dive right in.
Speaker:So International Women's Day, I don't know if you realize that it's
Speaker:actually been around since the early 19 hundreds and we're gonna get
Speaker:into the history in a little bit.
Speaker:But it's, you know, a great opportunity to really showcase and high.
Speaker:women's achievements, and also to promote that gender equality, which
Speaker:even sadly to say in 2023, there's still gender inequality, right?
Speaker:And let's get into the history and let's see what we can do to make a difference.
Speaker:The idea of celebrating International Women's Day, it actually dates back to
Speaker:all the way back to 1908 when initially 15,000 women marched through New York
Speaker:City and they demanded shorter working hours, better pay, and the right to vote.
Speaker:And then what happened is in 1910 in Copenhagen Den.
Speaker:There was a International Socialist Woman's Conference held, and
Speaker:they suggested the idea of having an International woman's Day.
Speaker:So this conference was attended by over a hundred women from over 17
Speaker:countries, and one of the woman who attended this conference, . Her name
Speaker:was Clara zk and she was a German feminist, and she was a social leader
Speaker:who also proposed the idea of having this International Women's Day to
Speaker:celebrate and advocate for women's rights.
Speaker:So then at the conference she said that March 8th should be designated
Speaker:as International Women's Day, and that should be a day to advocate for women.
Speaker:Suffering for their right to work and to end discrimination against women.
Speaker:And then what happened is this proposal was actually accepted and adopted, and
Speaker:the first International Women's Day was celebrated in Austria, Denmark, Germany,
Speaker:and Switzerland on March 19th, 1911.
Speaker:So if you're just hearing about International Women's Day now, It might
Speaker:be new to you, but it has actually been in the making for many, many years, and
Speaker:since that time, international Women's Day has actually been celebrated officially
Speaker:on March 8th, and it's become a global day of recognizing and celebrating women's
Speaker:achievements and also, putting the awareness out there for gender equality.
Speaker:And another interesting , historical fact is that the first International Women's
Speaker:Day was observed in 1911 in Austria, Denmark, Germany, and Switzerland.
Speaker:So those are the first, you know, places where it was adopted.
Speaker:And for this year, I want you guys to kind of think about what the theme is.
Speaker:So this year for International Women's Day 2023, the theme is choose to Challenge.
Speaker:And what that means is it's encouraging people to challenge gender bias
Speaker:and inequality so that we can all create a more inclusive world.
Speaker:And.
Speaker:. It's really a reminder, for everyone to advocate for gender equality in women's
Speaker:rights and unfortunately, gender equality is still prevalent today, and it does
Speaker:impact women in many different ways.
Speaker:For example, a lot of women still get lower wages.
Speaker:Than their male counterparts.
Speaker:Some of them also get fear, job opportunities, and then some of
Speaker:them also have limited access to education and healthcare and, you
Speaker:know, lack of representation in terms of even in, in the political world.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:So gender bias is also.
Speaker:Prevalent in cultural norms and practices and even stereotypes and even the
Speaker:media, like it's literally everywhere.
Speaker:If you're paying attention, you'll see it.
Speaker:So this year's theme choose to challenge.
Speaker:It really highlights the importance of being proactive and taking a
Speaker:stance against gender bias and inequality, and it really is putting
Speaker:the message out there for everyone.
Speaker:To speak up and say something, to speak up and stand out against other
Speaker:people when you're noticing that their actions do not promote gender equality.
Speaker:And if their actions or attitude or the policies that they have in place are
Speaker:not really there to be promoting gender equality, that we need to say something.
Speaker:And again, the theme choose to challenge by choosing to challenge gender bias.
Speaker:Together we can all make strides towards a more inclusive and
Speaker:equitable society for all, and the choosing to challenge gender bias.
Speaker:It involves recognizing and addressing when this happens in our
Speaker:everyday life, and then also taking action to promote gender equality.
Speaker:And it really requires a commitment to promoting women's.
Speaker:And supporting gender diverse individuals, and also empowering women and females
Speaker:and even our, children, our daughters, to achieve their full potential.
Speaker:So in order to create a more inclusive world for all, we need to challenge gender
Speaker:bias and work towards gender equality.
Speaker:And that means that it can't be done just by one or two people.
Speaker:Everyone has to do their part.
Speaker:So it's about bringing that awareness, and that's why in this podcast I'm sharing.
Speaker:An education on International Women's Day, A little bit about the history, a little
Speaker:bit about, you know, how we can take part and how we can do our part, right?
Speaker:We wanna make sure that we're creating a world where our children are going to be
Speaker:given a fair chance and fair opportunity.
Speaker:So if we start doing those things now, every single day, we can make a differe.
Speaker:All right.
Speaker:Now we're gonna get to some of the fun part about International Women's Day.
Speaker:Let's talk about some of the fun facts.
Speaker:All right, so in 1975, the United Nations recognized International
Speaker:Women's Day, and it's been celebrated every year since then.
Speaker:in many countries such as Russia, China, and Ukraine, international Women's
Speaker:Day is actually a public holiday.
Speaker:Wow.
Speaker:How about that?
Speaker:You know what, maybe it should be a public holiday in the United
Speaker:States as well, where women are given that day off from work.
Speaker:But I don't think we're quite there yet.
Speaker:It's a holiday, but it's more like an unofficial holiday.
Speaker:So the other thing that's interesting is there's actually a color that
Speaker:is associated with International Women's Day dating back from even
Speaker:the early 19 hundreds, and the color is purple, and the color purple
Speaker:symbolizes justice and dignity.
Speaker:So if you are going to an event tonight, Maybe put on something
Speaker:purple because you will be on brand for International Women's Day.
Speaker:. Another interesting fact about International Women's Day is that in 2019,
Speaker:an all women Indian Navy crew actually went on this mission of navigating
Speaker:through the globe, and they were the first all women crew to achieve this.
Speaker:So that's really cool.
Speaker:And then the other thing that you guys can think about is let's talk
Speaker:about International Women's Day.
Speaker:From the terms of a marketing perspective, because obviously this podcast, you
Speaker:know, we talk about all things marketing and you know, today a lot of brands
Speaker:and different companies are gonna be celebrating International Women's Day
Speaker:by launching campaigns that really highlight and support women's causes.
Speaker:So let's look at some of the campaigns that you know have happened
Speaker:in the past pertaining to this.
Speaker:And one that comes to mind is in 2021, Nike released a campaign
Speaker:and it was called We Play Real.
Speaker:And that campaign showcased women athletes and their struggles
Speaker:as well as their achievements.
Speaker:And then also, Dove launched a campaign called Courage is Beautiful, which
Speaker:celebrated the resilience and strength of women during the Covid 19 pandemic.
Speaker:So if you are a brand, it's a great opportunity to get
Speaker:your message out there and.
Speaker:Create a campaign around that for what you believe in.
Speaker:And even if you're too late to do it this year, it might be something that you wanna
Speaker:plan out a couple of months in advance for next year and really implement that,
Speaker:cuz it's a great way to get a lot of eyeballs on your brand and your content.
Speaker:Now what I wanna do is I wanna go through some marketing ideas
Speaker:for International Women's Day.
Speaker:So one of the things you can do is you.
Speaker:Set up a social media campaign that promotes gender equality and
Speaker:celebrates women's achievements.
Speaker:So maybe you have some great women in your life and you wanna recognize them.
Speaker:You can set up a campaign to appreciate what they've accomplished
Speaker:and to honor those women.
Speaker:. The other thing you can do is you can highlight female and women-led
Speaker:businesses, and you can feature those businesses in your marketing campaigns
Speaker:and again, highlight what their contributions have been to society
Speaker:and what they have achieved and how they got to where they are today.
Speaker:The other thing you can do is you can partner with other women's organizations.
Speaker:You can collaborate with these organizations to promote their
Speaker:causes and their initiatives.
Speaker:And then last, I think this is the biggest thing, is you can support
Speaker:women that are in the workplace.
Speaker:And that means that you can implement policies that support women in
Speaker:the workplace and make sure that they have the same opportunities
Speaker:as their male counterparts and that there is gender equality.
Speaker:So I hope you guys enjoyed this episode, and I hope that you're
Speaker:doing something fun and interesting.
Speaker:Honor all of the amazing women in your life.
Speaker:And also to honor what International Women's Day Release stands for.
Speaker:And again, this year's theme is choose to challenge, so I want to tell you.
Speaker:Choose to take that challenge and challenge yourself to speak up
Speaker:when others don't have a voice and stand up for what you believe in.
Speaker:Because if more people can do that, we can start seeing a difference.
Speaker:But because people choose to be silent when they should say something, it
Speaker:actually does not solve the problem.
Speaker:So if you see something, say something, so have an amazing international
Speaker:Women's day and share this episode.
Speaker:If you have some amazing women that you think need to hear this message, are some
Speaker:men that can help us with gender equality
Speaker:so thanks, and I'll see everyone next time.
