Phil Johnson, just weeks into retirement after 43 years alongside John MacArthur at Grace to You, stood up in a small Montana church and warned that some of the loudest voices claiming to do discernment ministry have disqualified themselves from eldership altogether.
This episode is a recording of the installation service of Justin Peters as pastor of Grace and Truth Community Church, which meets at The Front Porch in Laurel, Montana. Peters opens with a few minutes on how a congregation of around 25 people came to prevail upon him to take the pastorate himself, then hands the pulpit to Johnson and Jim Osman.
Johnson preaches 2 Timothy 2:14-26 on Paul's charge to guard the good deposit, laying out three duties: be an approved workman and guard your teaching, be a sanctified vessel and guard your heart, be a humble slave and guard your attitude. He works through Hymenaeus and Philetus — whose claim that the resurrection had already happened he compares to today's hyper-preterism — and shows why Paul names heretics plainly yet refuses to quarrel with them. False teaching from inside the visible church, Johnson insists, is a far greater threat than all the hostility outside it, and 1 Timothy 3:3's ban on the pugnacious man applies squarely to caustic online discernment podcasters.
Osman then preaches Hebrews 13:17 on the congregation's duty to obey and submit to leaders who keep watch over their souls.
It matters because guarding the truth without guarding your own heart and tone forfeits credibility in everything else you say.
