Speaker:

Hey everybody.

2

:

Welcome back to me.

3

:

Spooky edition of the daily Bible podcast.

4

:

That's right.

5

:

What are you dressing up as?

6

:

Um, You know, I really

wanted to dress up as Reagan.

7

:

And I just never bought the

costume so I could do really

8

:

cheesy break dance moves to.

9

:

And I thought this is perfect.

10

:

It's the perfect time for me to

display my non dancing skills.

11

:

Actually I can, I can dance a little bit.

12

:

I haven't danced in.

13

:

Dozens of years at this point.

14

:

Uh, but I I'm trusting if I did

try, it would not be a great thing

15

:

because I'm out of I'm out of shape.

16

:

Right?

17

:

Reagan for those of you that

are going wait, what is that?

18

:

A star wars character.

19

:

It's uh, it's the person

from the Olympics.

20

:

He did the break dancing.

21

:

It's just desperate to get God.

22

:

Yeah.

23

:

She was the one that was razzed

quite a bit for not dancing the best.

24

:

Let's just say that she scored

all of zero points in both of the

25

:

rounds that she, she competed in.

26

:

Yeah.

27

:

Yeah.

28

:

Not dancing the best.

29

:

That's a kind way to put that.

30

:

Well, I mean, you know what?

31

:

I, as I watched it, Again, and

again, and again, and again.

32

:

Because lots of platforms

made me watch it right.

33

:

There was an elegance about it.

34

:

I'm like, it's, it's so bad.

35

:

It's kind of good.

36

:

Like he knows one of those things

where like, this is just so not

37

:

good that I really want to see it.

38

:

That's one of those things.

39

:

So I was inspired by it.

40

:

I just never bought it.

41

:

I'm like, I don't want to waste

money on it and I'd rather buy candy.

42

:

So I don't think I'm going

to dress up as anything.

43

:

What are you going to dress it as?

44

:

Um, Middle-aged dad sitting outside by a.

45

:

Bonfire passing out candy to.

46

:

With his shirt off.

47

:

Nope, drinking a non-alcoholic beer.

48

:

With a straw hat, new whistling

with a piece of straw and is now no.

49

:

So it's a specific.

50

:

So, what am I whistling in this?

51

:

This star Spangled banner, of course.

52

:

Of course.

53

:

So it should be whistling, buddy.

54

:

Oh man.

55

:

Oh, Oh, you're welcome everybody.

56

:

The.

57

:

It would be called so fast.

58

:

Put the image in your head.

59

:

No, no, that is awful.

60

:

Oh man.

61

:

Hey, I've got a question and social media.

62

:

Uh, how do we redeem?

63

:

There's a big question,

but what are some short.

64

:

Simple ways we can redeem.

65

:

Our presence on social media.

66

:

Cause I know some people are like, I

don't want anything to do with them

67

:

or delete every account that I have.

68

:

And that's fine if you choose that.

69

:

That's fine.

70

:

We're recognizing though

that it can be useful for us.

71

:

I mean, so many people at fall fast,

not to continue to go back to that,

72

:

but so many people were there and said,

Hey, we saw it on fall on Facebook.

73

:

And so we're here.

74

:

That's awesome.

75

:

That's it?

76

:

That's a redemptive use of Facebook.

77

:

What are some ways though that

we, as individuals can redeem

78

:

our social media presence.

79

:

I think rule number one is to be aware

that when the service is free, it's

80

:

because you are the product, your eyes

and your attention are what's for sale.

81

:

And so the, the goal of the platform

is to have you enter in this.

82

:

This tunnel of time, where you forget

your space and place, and you just take

83

:

as much time as you can on the platform.

84

:

That's the goal of every single

one of them, except for, I

85

:

think the one exception to

this rule now is going to be X.

86

:

It's still trying to keep you

there, but now you can pay.

87

:

So as you don't have to pay the advert.

88

:

You're not going to pay

with your advertisement.

89

:

I's you're going to pay with your dollars.

90

:

So you can pay to not see the

advertisements, which will,

91

:

which will play a role in how

and how you interact with that.

92

:

I'm curious to see where that goes.

93

:

But the first, I think, first of all,

is to know that you are the product and

94

:

therefore you ought to be aware that

they're going to play tricks on you to

95

:

make you want to stay on the platform.

96

:

Number two, I would recognize that

your time is enormously valuable

97

:

and you can never get it back.

98

:

So that means that when you go

to your platform of choice, you

99

:

should have a goal for that.

100

:

And one of the reasons I go

to Facebook is because I want

101

:

to see what people are doing.

102

:

I want to see what our church

is doing in particular.

103

:

I want to see what, what, you know, what

they're up to, what shows are going to,

104

:

what they're, what they're doing for fun.

105

:

And I also want to check

it on my community.

106

:

My a.

107

:

My living community has a Facebook page.

108

:

So I kind of keep up on

what's going on there.

109

:

So I have purposes for that.

110

:

And then when it comes to other

platforms like Tik TOK, I track Tik TOK.

111

:

Cause I want to know what's popular.

112

:

I want to know what people are watching.

113

:

And I also want you to know number

three, that you can tailor each of these

114

:

platforms to your needs and your desires.

115

:

So whatever you give attention to is

what the algorithm is going to say.

116

:

Oh, pastor PJ really likes this kind

of content, or he really hates it.

117

:

It doesn't care which one it

is, as long as you react to it.

118

:

And it's going to feed

you more of those things.

119

:

So, if you're going to use it, I'm

going to use it intentionally being

120

:

aware that you are the product.

121

:

Number two, utilizing it

with an intention in mind.

122

:

And number three, being aware

you can tailor how it treats

123

:

you and this train it wisely.

124

:

If you do those three things, I

think you'll be well on your way

125

:

to using it in a redemptive way.

126

:

That's awesome.

127

:

Those are great.

128

:

Helps man.

129

:

Great helps.

130

:

All right, Matthew 19, mark 10

for our time and scripture today.

131

:

I think 19, a one through 12 Jesus.

132

:

Uh, takes on a difficult subject.

133

:

Um, and yet it's a good

thing that he does.

134

:

Jesus, never shies away from talking

about a given topic or subject.

135

:

And here he's going to be talking

about divorce, but noticing 19 one.

136

:

That's he's in an area that's

referred to as beyond the Jordan.

137

:

This is a region that was

known as Perea P E R E a.

138

:

It was not necessarily

part of, uh, of Judea.

139

:

It was in the region

of, but not part of it.

140

:

Uh, politically, this is still part

of Herod's reign and region DOE.

141

:

And so he's going to be there.

142

:

I mentioned yesterday that Bethany

is in this area, which is where

143

:

Lazarus and Mary and Martha lived.

144

:

So it's nearby Jerusalem,

but not quite there yet.

145

:

And so, again, as pastor rod

said yesterday, he's on his way.

146

:

He's on his way down towards, uh,

everything going on there now.

147

:

Matthew John is the only one that

records the resurrection of Lazarus,

148

:

which is unique because that's a

pretty massive event that takes place.

149

:

Here is.

150

:

The dead body coming back to life.

151

:

I'm not sure exactly why John's the only

one who does this, it fit his purpose.

152

:

It fit his narrative, which is that he was

seeking to show that Jesus is the Christ.

153

:

The son of God and that believing

in him, you might have life.

154

:

He says in that context, I'm

the resurrection in the life.

155

:

So it fit that.

156

:

But, but it's all taking place near this

general vicinity and timeframe that Jesus

157

:

is coming in, but he's still teaching.

158

:

And that's the point here?

159

:

And in Matthew 19 verses one

through 12, he's going to be teach

160

:

teaching about marriage and divorce.

161

:

I want you to note verse six.

162

:

So there are no longer two, but one flesh.

163

:

What, therefore God has joined together.

164

:

Let not man separate.

165

:

That is God's view on divorce.

166

:

What God has joined together.

167

:

Let not man separate.

168

:

And so the, the question is asked then,

because the Pharisees recognize that

169

:

Jesus is saying, Hey, Divorce is bad.

170

:

People should not get divorced.

171

:

So the Pharisees then ask

the question in verse seven.

172

:

Well then why did Moses allow it?

173

:

Jesus answers in verse eight, why

divorce was permitted hardness of heart.

174

:

He says because of your hardness of

heart, now not them particularly, but

175

:

the Jewish people in general, Moses

allowed you to divorce your wives.

176

:

But from the beginning it was not.

177

:

So in other words, God never desired this.

178

:

And then in verse nine, we get the

exception clause, the exception

179

:

clause, when he says, and I say

to you, whoever divorces his wife,

180

:

except for sexual immorality and

marries another commits adultery.

181

:

Now, obviously that was a penalty

in this era, punishable by death.

182

:

And so this is, this is weighty.

183

:

This is significant today.

184

:

We've got nonsense websites out there that

are, are aimed at Hey, having a fair life

185

:

is short and an adultery is not considered

what it once was at this point in time.

186

:

And this was not only against the

lie, it was punishable by death.

187

:

And so this is serious,

what Jesus says here.

188

:

And he says, except for sexual immorality.

189

:

And we've talked about that

before in a different passage

190

:

that we've covered recently.

191

:

Um, but, but he's giving this exception

clause and they say, man, this is hard.

192

:

Then it's better not to

marry is the response.

193

:

And Jesus says, yeah, you're right.

194

:

And you know what, marriage,

isn't it for everyone.

195

:

There are some that are going to say

that seems like I don't know that I

196

:

could commit to someone to that degree.

197

:

And for them, they may be kingdom

Unix, which is what Jesus says here.

198

:

Those that are.

199

:

Committing to be celebrated

for the rest of their lives.

200

:

This is not a freedom to go and

sleep around with people and not

201

:

have to commit to one person though.

202

:

This is someone that says, you know what,

I, maybe I'm just going to not marry and

203

:

not pursue anything regarding sexuality.

204

:

Um, in my life, I'm going to be single

for Jesus for the rest of my life.

205

:

And he says there are some that are there.

206

:

And I would say that's probably

the exception rather than

207

:

the rule with most people.

208

:

Are there any other exceptions

besides sexual morality that a

209

:

Christian should be aware of?

210

:

Not that they're looking for outs.

211

:

But for a wise Christian looking for

understanding about the nature of

212

:

marriage and what it's supposed to be.

213

:

Um, for instance, We've come across

a situation where, uh, one spouse

214

:

was upset with the other spouse, for

their engagement, with online things.

215

:

And so they said, well, since the

root word for sexual morality in

216

:

the Bible is pornea, um, seems

like if a, if a particular spouse

217

:

has given to some of these things,

Then that might be an option.

218

:

Alternatively another Christian might

say, well, What if there's a physical

219

:

abuse in a relationship, is there.

220

:

Any situation where you would advise

a Christian to say, okay, this is

221

:

a situation where we're, this is a

kind of abandonment and therefore

222

:

something where a Christian can say,

we're not going to be married anymore.

223

:

Yeah.

224

:

Um,

225

:

First case study there.

226

:

Dealing with that word.

227

:

Um, The online activity there, we would

say that that's not the same as the

228

:

physical act of adultery with someone.

229

:

Um, though Jesus says in Matthew,

Uh, in the sermon on the Mount, Hey,

230

:

if anyone looks with lust than he's

committed adultery with her in her

231

:

heart, but we've got to be careful there

because then it's a matter of, okay.

232

:

Does the, my spouse's thought life,

give me a green light to divorce them.

233

:

And we would say, certainly not.

234

:

So that's why I think we,

we land on the physical act.

235

:

There's something very

significant about that.

236

:

In fact, Paul addresses this

in first Corinthians six.

237

:

With the issue of going to visit

a, um, person of the night.

238

:

If I can put it that way.

239

:

That you are joining in that act, that

physical connection, that physical act,

240

:

you are joining your body with them.

241

:

And if Christ dwells in you, the spirit

dwells in you, you are joining the

242

:

spirit with that person in that act.

243

:

And so there's something very

significant about that act.

244

:

Uh, that is a defining litmus test in

when somebody has betrayed their spouse.

245

:

Now, there are going to

be exception, clauses.

246

:

There are going to be unique

circumstances, and there are, uh,

247

:

counseling case studies that are built

all around those uniques case studies.

248

:

But most of the time, by and

large, when we come across this

249

:

not being a physical engagement or.

250

:

You know, perhaps emotional engagement

and even there again, it's like,

251

:

okay, where do we draw the line here?

252

:

But physical is the main thing

that's being considered as Jesus

253

:

is speaking this in this context.

254

:

Uh, the other situation as is laid

out in first Corinthians chapter

255

:

seven is there may be a situation.

256

:

First Corinthians seven 15.

257

:

If the unbelieving, this is a

believer married to an unbeliever.

258

:

If the unbelieving partner

leaves, if they separate, if

259

:

they file for divorce, let it be.

260

:

So in such cases, the brother or

sister is not bound or is not enslaved.

261

:

God has called you to peace.

262

:

So in that certain circumstance,

you as the one, letting them go,

263

:

not you as the believer, filing for

divorce from the unbeliever, but the

264

:

unbeliever choosing to abandon you.

265

:

You are freed in that sense from that

marriage, those would be the main

266

:

two exception, closets now abuse.

267

:

Is again a super difficult

situation and I've counseled.

268

:

Couples that have been in that

situation and I've count counsel

269

:

couples for the safety and

wellbeing of the spouse to separate.

270

:

Um, in, in.

271

:

In that situation.

272

:

I was pursuing one-on-one counseling

with the husband and there was somebody

273

:

else pursuing one-on-one counseling from

our church, a lady with, with the wife.

274

:

And our goal in the end was to, to

try to work towards reconciliation.

275

:

Uh, they're in that situation.

276

:

Um, Th th that's a difficult one.

277

:

And one that is, is certainly not

a rare, it's not an albatross.

278

:

Unfortunately in our

society, abuse does happen.

279

:

But even there, I think we have to

be careful because our culture has

280

:

hijacked the word abuse to make it mean

anything that they want it to mean.

281

:

I'm uncomfortable.

282

:

This is abuse.

283

:

I'm going to get divorced.

284

:

Yeah.

285

:

Um, I think if we're going to

counsel towards divorce, in a case

286

:

of abuse, it really does have to be

a very crave situation that we're

287

:

dealing with in that circumstance.

288

:

I think that's a, that's a wise

clarification and it's important that

289

:

everybody recognize what's happening

with the word games that we play

290

:

today, because it's going to have a

real impact on the way that we do.

291

:

Uh, application and the way that we even

think about exit Jesus to your point.

292

:

People use the word abuse, so

frivolously, and I'm not saying that

293

:

all use cases are wrong, even right.

294

:

It's applied like salt on everything that,

that, that can be ha that can happen.

295

:

That it becomes really unhelpful to

say, well, I'm, I'm being abused.

296

:

I'd like to pursue a divorce.

297

:

Okay.

298

:

Well, let's slow down.

299

:

Pump the brakes.

300

:

What do we mean by that?

301

:

Right.

302

:

And to what degree is

the abuse taking place?

303

:

I talked to one person.

304

:

Who said that they were being emotionally

abused and therefore they wanted

305

:

separation from their parents now.

306

:

And I was a student.

307

:

Of course they said I don't, I don't

think I should stay in the home.

308

:

I think emotionally abused.

309

:

And I had to clarify,

what do you mean by that?

310

:

And of course this, this opens up a

whole Pandora's box of, okay, well,

311

:

let's, let's challenge what you

understand to be emotional abuse versus

312

:

what your parents are supposed to do.

313

:

And that the same thing can

happen in a marriage where both

314

:

parties are really invested in.

315

:

There's a lot of emotions involved.

316

:

Of course.

317

:

Um, you can imagine that an unkind word

can turn into something really nasty.

318

:

Really quickly, so important to clarify

words and to understand if there's a

319

:

situation that you're encountering,

where this is a possibility.

320

:

Please feel free and encourage him and

to send it up to the pastoral chain,

321

:

that would be most helpful, a hundred

percent and, and hear this and especially.

322

:

Uh, abuse happens both directions,

but I want you to hear this

323

:

ladies listening to this.

324

:

Um, we, as your pastors

are committed to, to.

325

:

To protecting you.

326

:

We will protect you.

327

:

Now we will have scripture as

our ultimate guide and litmus

328

:

test here, but I I've, it.

329

:

It's become an Inn.

330

:

Some of these.

331

:

Uh, investigative journalist

and I use that term so loosely,

332

:

um, you know, Of of the church.

333

:

And of elders and things of that

they have said, you know, elders are

334

:

enabling physical abusers in the church.

335

:

And it's, uh, Uh, masochistic,

patriarchal society and all these terms

336

:

and labels are being thrown around.

337

:

And they're just telling it the

abused and beaten and battered

338

:

wife to go back to her husband.

339

:

And they're putting her life at risk.

340

:

Hear us say this.

341

:

We will not put your life at risk.

342

:

We will work towards your protection and

in your safety, no matter what that looks.

343

:

And sometimes like I alluded to earlier

that may involve separation for a time

344

:

being, um, we're going to make sure

that that when it comes through the

345

:

word divorce, that we are very careful

with that because it is a massively

346

:

significant step to dissolve a marriage.

347

:

And we want to be very.

348

:

Very careful with that.

349

:

But we will do everything that

we need to do in can do to

350

:

make sure that you, your kids.

351

:

Your husband or wife, whoever you are,

are safe in a circumstance or a situation.

352

:

Um, and so don't, don't hear

us say what we're going to say.

353

:

Don't worry about that.

354

:

Build your bridge, get over it

and go back into a situation

355

:

where you might be in danger.

356

:

We just want to make sure that

we're thinking clearly and carefully

357

:

about all of these different, uh,

concepts and parameters as, as we

358

:

give counsel and advice in that.

359

:

From here, he goes on

to verses 13 through 15.

360

:

Um, To talk about childlike faith, which

we talked about in yesterday's podcast.

361

:

If you miss that, you can

go back and hear that.

362

:

I don't know that there's

anything particularly new PR.

363

:

If you have anything in Matthew's

treatment here on, on this.

364

:

No.

365

:

Uh, Mark's going to hit that as well.

366

:

And then he hits the

rich young ruler again.

367

:

Um, same story, same situation.

368

:

Rich young ruler comes up.

369

:

He tells him to go sell all that.

370

:

He has the disciples response

in verses 27 through 30.

371

:

Uh, one of the unique additions from

Matthew is that they are going to

372

:

sit on Thrones in the millennial

kingdom, judging the tribes of Israel.

373

:

As in the days of Moses.

374

:

My thought on that PR I'm curious to get

yours, but this is Matthew he's writing to

375

:

a largely Jewish audience with that focus

on Christ is as the king of the Jews.

376

:

So it makes sense that he would include

in here this part about them during

377

:

the millennial kingdom, reigning with

Christ a hundred percent, he's got the

378

:

intention of reaching his Jewish audience.

379

:

This makes perfect sense and lie to

the audience that he's aiming for.

380

:

Yeah.

381

:

Yeah.

382

:

So that's Matthew 19.

383

:

Um, mark 10 mark.

384

:

10 opens up again, a teaching on divorce.

385

:

The parallel here to Matthew

19 one through 12, you get

386

:

mark 10, one through 12.

387

:

Uh, one addition here that mark

gives us is in verses 11 through 12.

388

:

He gives us teaching on not what

constitutes adultery as far as remarriage.

389

:

He says, whoever divorces

his wife and marries another

390

:

commits adultery against her.

391

:

And if she divorces her husband and

marries another, she commits adultery.

392

:

This is why, uh, church in, in so many

instances, except for the two that

393

:

I mentioned yesterday, which is, or

just now in Matthew 19, that we just

394

:

talked about, which is, uh, you have.

395

:

I've been the one that somebody committed

adultery against you and it ended in

396

:

divorce or, uh, you're married to an

unbeliever and that unbeliever leaves you.

397

:

Uh, you are free to remarry

in those two circumstances.

398

:

Outside of that, there really is not a

freedom for you to pursue remarriage.

399

:

Um, this is again the significance

and seriousness of divorce.

400

:

And so when somebody divorces their

spouse, Uh, Jesus is saying here,

401

:

you need to be careful to remain

single because to remarry again.

402

:

If that divorce was not a biblical

divorce or permissible divorce.

403

:

Uh, to remarry again, is to commit

adultery, which again, this context

404

:

of this society, this timing would

have resulted in being guilty

405

:

of a penalty of death, a crime

punishable by death at that time.

406

:

Yeah, the idea here is that

God still sees you as married.

407

:

You may think your district.

408

:

Your marriage is dissolved.

409

:

He doesn't.

410

:

And that's the more important.

411

:

A better perspective on the matter.

412

:

Right?

413

:

Right.

414

:

Exactly.

415

:

Yeah.

416

:

Yeah.

417

:

And there have been stories of, of

couples divorcing then reconciling

418

:

later on getting back together and

repenting from that sin that led to

419

:

the divorce in, in being reunited.

420

:

So those are cool.

421

:

Um, we don't, we don't want divorce to

happen, so, so we're not cheering for

422

:

those situations except for when there's.

423

:

There's hope there's hope

in every relationship that

424

:

things could turn around.

425

:

Never lose hope for that.

426

:

Yep.

427

:

Yeah, mark 10.

428

:

Then we get to verses 13 through 16.

429

:

Childlike faith again.

430

:

Then in verses 17 through 31,

the rich young ruler shows up

431

:

again here at the synoptic.

432

:

Gospels have so much in parallel notice in

the rich young ruler this time in mark 10.

433

:

And one thing that jumped out to me

in verse 21, it says Jesus loved him.

434

:

Um, that that was special just

to see here's a man who's going

435

:

to go way in by all implications.

436

:

We're I don't think we're

going to see him again.

437

:

Uh, and, and yet it says there that

in that moment, Jesus loved him and

438

:

went after what his real need was.

439

:

Which was to sell everything

in Kevin following.

440

:

Yeah, I would, I would agree

that that's D I think anyone who

441

:

reads this is going to initially.

442

:

Yeah, it's hard to miss that.

443

:

It stands out.

444

:

So, so vividly.

445

:

And I think what's important.

446

:

There is to notice two things.

447

:

Number one, true speaks

true speaks to people.

448

:

Um, and that's what love provokes love

for people will make you of necessity.

449

:

Tell people the truth.

450

:

And this is what Jesus does.

451

:

Now notice here, as you pointed

out, pastor Peter, doesn't look like

452

:

this guy responds positively, right?

453

:

It's actually cited.

454

:

We don't know.

455

:

We don't know that he doesn't don't know

that he does either, but it's silent.

456

:

And if he's not.

457

:

Oh, someone that scripture

would call it the elect.

458

:

It's still goes to show that Jesus

has a love for people that is more

459

:

than just a frivolous, like, oh, I,

I just, I think nice thoughts about,

460

:

you know, he he's pursuing even

the non-electric put it that way.

461

:

And this is an important feature for us

because we, as those who believe in the

462

:

doctrine of election, we who are reformed.

463

:

You should take a lesson and a page

out of Jesus playbook later on,

464

:

he's going to weep over Jerusalem

and say, oh, Jerusalem, Jerusalem,

465

:

the city that kills us profits.

466

:

If only you'd known the time that you had.

467

:

Uh, he's crying over these people.

468

:

The Christians like ourselves who stand

in this camp ought to care enough to cry.

469

:

We had to be the kind of people who care

enough about people to weep over them.

470

:

It's easy to do that for our

family members or easier, I

471

:

should say, not necessarily easy.

472

:

Harder to do that for your

neighbor across the street.

473

:

But I think Jesus shows us a better way.

474

:

We can't be the cold Calvinists

who are just saying, well, if

475

:

you're elected, you're elected.

476

:

If you're not, you're not so sorry.

477

:

We had to care about people to

the point where like, Jesus.

478

:

We can love them genuinely,

authentically and care deeply

479

:

about their eternal destination.

480

:

Yeah.

481

:

Yeah.

482

:

Yeah.

483

:

Uh, after this verses 32 through

34, you get the third foretelling

484

:

again of the death and resurrection.

485

:

Oh, Jesus.

486

:

Notice in verse 31, cause this is going

to factor into what comes next here.

487

:

So we, we left this off.

488

:

In the rich young ruler, verse

31, many who are first will be

489

:

last in the last will be first.

490

:

Then Jesus talks about

how he's going to suffer.

491

:

He's going to die.

492

:

Verse 34, they're going to mock him,

spit on him, flog him and kill him.

493

:

And after three days he will rise.

494

:

So he says this.

495

:

And then we get tone deaf James and

John coming up to Jesus right after that

496

:

saying, um, Can we talk about seating

in the, uh, the millennial kingdom.

497

:

Can we talk about where we're going to be?

498

:

We, we would like to be on

your right and your left.

499

:

Uh, which were seats of honor.

500

:

And so we're in John's gospel and

we've been holding John up as, as a

501

:

paradigm of godliness in so many ways.

502

:

And he's the disciple whom Jesus loved.

503

:

And yet here, John is.

504

:

John's not doing, not doing her.

505

:

Yeah.

506

:

It's not a good look here.

507

:

Um, They're not, they're not

hearing what he's saying and the

508

:

less we think the others were.

509

:

Sitting in there going, oh John,

how could you, how dare, how could

510

:

you ever think there's things.

511

:

Verse 41 says when they found out

about it, they were indignant.

512

:

Their own pride shows up.

513

:

They're like, wait a minute.

514

:

Why did you get to ask first?

515

:

They didn't have those.

516

:

I wish you would have thought of it first.

517

:

Well, what's it.

518

:

What's so interesting.

519

:

We're going to read about it tomorrow

and tomorrow is reading, but we're

520

:

going to find out that it was their

mom that asked on their behalf.

521

:

Yeah.

522

:

Which makes us even worse.

523

:

It's like they weren't, they weren't

bold enough to say it themselves.

524

:

Hey, mom, you know how we've

been thinking about this?

525

:

New Jerusalem thing.

526

:

And the next kingdom, we have a, we

have a job where you, can you help us?

527

:

So there they're there.

528

:

They're not even doing it themselves.

529

:

If they had, I guess, the goal

to do it themselves, you might.

530

:

Okay.

531

:

Well, I can understand

their, their ambitious.

532

:

Um, but instead their mom

does it on their behalf.

533

:

Yeah.

534

:

Yeah.

535

:

The wife of thunder.

536

:

And the mother of thunder.

537

:

Yeah.

538

:

Well get this and, and I

think it's again, significant.

539

:

Jesus does not tell them your

desire to be great as wrong-headed.

540

:

He doesn't do that.

541

:

And I think it's so important

for Christians to see this.

542

:

He doesn't say, Hey,

don't desire to be great.

543

:

He tells them how to be

great in his kingdom.

544

:

You be great by serving people.

545

:

You be great by.

546

:

By doing what I'm doing, you're

serving you're sacrificing.

547

:

So don't, don't not think,

let me just try that again.

548

:

Don't think Jesus is discouraging

Christians from having a holy

549

:

ambition to the contrary.

550

:

He's telling him you want that.

551

:

Here's how to do it.

552

:

It's not the way that you think that the

world, the way the world teaches you,

553

:

it's this way it's through serving others.

554

:

That's how you achieve kingdom greatness.

555

:

Yeah.

556

:

Yeah.

557

:

We've finished up this chapter then in

mark 10 with again, blind Bartimaeus now.

558

:

Uh, mark and Luke both only record

one person Matthew records to,

559

:

um, and, and that's one of those

situations where we say, wait a minute.

560

:

And if you remember back to when we

talked about the Garrison demoniacs.

561

:

Uh, some recorded too, but mark, when.

562

:

Recorded one.

563

:

And so here again, mark only records one.

564

:

So, uh, this is kind of a pattern with

mark that when there's two, he says, Nope.

565

:

You're just one guy.

566

:

Uh, and the reason again, probably

same thing as back then is he re

567

:

he focuses on the spokesperson.

568

:

And the spokesman here was

this guy named Bartimaeus.

569

:

And so Bartimaeus is the

one that gets the credit.

570

:

He gets the Notability here.

571

:

And he's the one that

says rabbi, I wish to see.

572

:

And Jesus' response there.

573

:

He says your faith has made you

well again, the paradigm of the

574

:

gospel in the healing of Bartimaeus.

575

:

I wish this story was in John.

576

:

Cause I love it.

577

:

It's not, but, uh, but again,

just that paradigm of the gospel

578

:

there is, is so cool to see him

in the healing of Bartimaeus.

579

:

All right.

580

:

Well, let's pray.

581

:

And then we'll be done with this episode.

582

:

Got again, all of us were like Bartimaeus

at one point and you chose to show

583

:

mercy upon us and give us the eyes

to see in that years to hear in the.

584

:

The faith to believe.

585

:

And we're so thankful for that.

586

:

Get we.

587

:

Uh, live in a culture of

divorce and we recognize that.

588

:

Uh, we, we pray that as a church, that

our marriage would be strengthened

589

:

in strong and that we would be a

church quick to forgive and to extend

590

:

grace and mercy to one another.

591

:

And I know that there are difficult

seasons and difficult times in people's

592

:

marriages, but God, you are a God who.

593

:

Love's marriage and you're

the God who said what ma.

594

:

You have joined together.

595

:

Let no man separate.

596

:

And so God, we pray that you would

protect our church in that regard.

597

:

And that she'd be kind to us and help

us to be, uh, people that that are,

598

:

are, are loving and gracious and are

willing to show the grace to others that

599

:

we ourselves have received from you.

600

:

And so we.

601

:

Uh, ask for that.

602

:

We pray for that and we trust

that you're able to do that.

603

:

And so we ask these things in Jesus name.

604

:

Amen.

605

:

And then.

606

:

Hey, keeping your Bibles tune in

again tomorrow for another episode

607

:

of the daily Bible podcasts.

608

:

Bye.
