Shownotes

Welcome to The Hairy Chin Podcast, hosted by women’s health educator and patient-turned advocate Spencer Moore.

After more than thirty years navigating complex diagnoses and healthcare systems, Spencer realized something: women are constantly told to advocate for themselves, but almost no one teaches them how. The Hairy Chin and our podcast exist to close that gap.

This podcast teaches practical self-advocacy skills, shares real stories from women navigating complex care, and brings healthcare professionals into the conversation through three core series: The Advocacy Series, Chin Chats and Expert Interviews. Along with resources and toolkits to help you in the real world.

If you’ve ever left a medical appointment feeling dismissed, confused, or unheard, this podcast is for you!

Transcripts

Welcome to the Hairy Chin Podcast. I'm Spencer Moore, your host. I spent over 30 years navigating the healthcare system, first as a patient and now as a female health advocate. I've managed chronic illness, autoimmune issues, mental health diagnoses and early stage breast cancer. I've been called difficult. I've been told my labs were normal when I still felt terrible. And I've been passed around from specialist to specialist like a hot potato. And somewhere in the middle of it all, I realized something. Women are constantly told to advocate for themselves, but almost no one teaches us how. That space between being told to speak up and actually having the skills to do it is where so many women get lost. The Hairy Chin exists to close that gap. This podcast is built around three series. The advocacy series teaches practical step-by-step skills for navigating healthcare clearly and intentionally from preparing for appointments, to communicating in language that actually gets documented. Chin chats are honest conversations about what self-advocacy looks like in real life, messy and perfect and human. And the expert series brings healthcare professionals into the conversation to talk about how they can better support and listen to women. This isn't about being confrontational, it's not about fighting doctors, and it's not about pretending the system works perfectly. It's about learning how to participate in your own care without losing yourself in the process. If you've ever left an appointment thinking, I said what was true, why didn't it land, you're in the right place.
