Guest: Yale School of Medicine, Joan Monin, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Public Health, Social & Behavioral Sciences. Professor Monin's research examines how emotional processes affect health in older adult relationships. Her research combines survey methods and laboratory experiments to understand the mechanisms (e.g. emotional contagion, cardiovascular reactivity) and moderators (gender, individual differences in attachment) involved in these processes. Currently her research focuses on understanding how caregivers and care recipients support one another in the context of early stage dementia.
All things considered, we as caregivers are really a special group of individuals. In this episode, I discuss with Professor Joan Monin, Ph.D, from the Yale School of Public Health, the research she’s been doing to better understand how families support parents and spouses going through dementia and Alzheimer’s. She has managed to flip some of the traditional assumptions on how stress impacts us and how to deal with it. She describes the differences between husbands and wives as caregivers, and well as generational understandings. She also mentions how to better partner – yes, “partner” with someone who has dementia, and gives some great tips for more open communication that, in turn, could bring more joy and understanding into your family and your own life.
You can also participate in, and benefit from the studies she’s currently doing now. Here’s a link to those details. Yale Caregiver Study.
It’s a power packed, yet enlightening, show you’ll definitely want to hear.
