Please enjoy:“A Rock Among Millions”
Please enjoy:by Skunkbomb I woke up to a text from my best friend saying, “Hiking.
Please enjoy:You and me. DO IT.”
Please enjoy:After sending out resumes all summer and getting no reply,
Please enjoy:I figured I could be an outdoor cat for an afternoon.
Please enjoy:Maybe some fresh air would clear my head or,
Please enjoy:at the very least, distract me from my unemployment.
Please enjoy:“Dude, this park is awesome,”
Please enjoy:Leif said as he pulled into the parking lot of Oak Lake Park.
Please enjoy:His tail thumped against his seat
Please enjoy:as he pointed to the gathering of trees at the base of a rocky cliff.
Please enjoy:A river curved its way to an oval lake.
Please enjoy:“And we’re going to the top.”
Please enjoy:I shielded my eyes from the sun’s glare.
Please enjoy:“I thought we were just going to take a lap around the lake or something.”
Please enjoy:The collie shook his head.
Please enjoy:“We have to go to the top, Alec.
Please enjoy:There’s this rock up there—” “There
Please enjoy:are rocks all over this park.”
Please enjoy:“No, but for real, there’s this rock,”
Please enjoy:Leif said, holding his paws out wide.
Please enjoy:“Huge rock. Legend says that whoever touches it gets good fortune.”
Please enjoy:He grabbed my arms and leaned in closer to me.
Please enjoy:He spoke to me in a whisper full of Taco Bell-y dog breath.
Please enjoy:“And we’re gonna touch it.”
Please enjoy:I fought to keep my claws from poking out.
Please enjoy:Leif’s my best friend,
Please enjoy:but his canine enthusiasm was a little overbearing.
Please enjoy:“Rocks don’t have magic powers.” “Come
Please enjoy:on, where’s your sense of adventure, mister
Please enjoy:investigative reporter tabby?”
Please enjoy:Leif had dubbed me that ever since I picked Journalism before I started my freshman year.
Please enjoy:I don’t want to be the guy writing articles about a new grocery store opening.
Please enjoy:I want to write about the unfair wages and hours the grocery stores give their employees.
Please enjoy:“Can you at least get a little psyched for me?”
Please enjoy:Leif said as we climbed out of the car.
Please enjoy:“I’ve got a week of freedom before I start that insurance job.
Please enjoy:By the way, how’d that interview go for you on Friday?”
Please enjoy:“I woke up to an email saying the position was actually an internship,” I said.
Please enjoy:It was getting harder not to extend my claws.
Please enjoy:“They still offered me a spot, but I’ve done internships all through college.
Please enjoy:I should at least have the experience for an entry-level position, right?”
Please enjoy:Leif’s ears flattened.
Please enjoy:“Shit, sorry bro. Something will pop up at some point.
Please enjoy:Hey, maybe once you touch the rock, you’ll get that dream job.”
Please enjoy:“Let’s just walk, okay?”
Please enjoy:I said. I looked up at the signed with arrows pointing toward all the different paths.
Please enjoy:“Which one of these leads up?” #
Please enjoy:Once we entered the woodsy part of the trail, the shade provided enough protection to keep Leif from panting too much.
Please enjoy:“Try not to mark any of the trees,” I said.
Please enjoy:“That was one time!” Leif whined.
Please enjoy:“Twice.” “Whatever!” Rocks jutted out of the ground,
Please enjoy:so we had to step across them.
Please enjoy:Well, Leif did. I had more of a graceful bounce.
Please enjoy:Leif found a group of rocks overlooking the lake,
Please enjoy:and he lay back against one like a lawn chair.
Please enjoy:“Dude,” Leif said, placing his paws behind his head.
Please enjoy:“Take my picture!” As he shifted his tail into the sunnier part of the rock,
Please enjoy:he said, “Tag your sister in this. Show her
Please enjoy:what she’s missing.”
Please enjoy:I wrinkled my nose. “Never happening.”
Please enjoy:“She still playing college soccer?”
Please enjoy:I nodded. “Apparently some scout for the Olympic team watched their practice last week.”
Please enjoy:“And your brother?”
Please enjoy:Leif asked. “Is he still boring?”
Please enjoy:“Kinda,” I said. “But he’s doing accounting for some big business.”
Please enjoy:“Whatever it was, it gave him a sweet company car,” Leif said,
Please enjoy:grasping the air in front of him like a steering wheel.
Please enjoy:“I saw those pics online.”
Please enjoy:I glanced at a shaggy caterpillar inching across the stone next to me.
Please enjoy:“It’s not a company car. He bought that.”
Please enjoy:It was if my brother had been handed the job as he walked off the stage with his diploma.
Please enjoy:Actually, it was like half of his graduating class was already wearing business suits under their graduation gowns.
Please enjoy:Had I missed some sort of requirement in college?
Please enjoy:I took all the right classes,
Please enjoy:but here I was walking to a park in the middle of a Wednesday afternoon.
Please enjoy:“This rock is actually super uncomfortable,” Leif said,
Please enjoy:his smile faltering.
Please enjoy:“Mind if we speed things up?”
Please enjoy:I took out my phone and snapped a couple of quick shots of him.
Please enjoy:“Okay, now give me ‘paint me like one of your French girls’.”
Please enjoy:Leif slipped a finger between his belt and shorts.
Please enjoy:“Don’t take this the wrong way,
Please enjoy:but can you take the pic again, but with me naked?”
Please enjoy:I lowered my phone.
Please enjoy:“What the hell kind of way am I suppose to take a question like that?”
Please enjoy:“You take it as ‘yes, Leif. I’d love to help you score a date with an outdoors-y artistic nude pic,”
Please enjoy:Leif said. “You sure you don’t want to send it to your sister?”
Please enjoy:“She has a boyfriend,”
Please enjoy:I told him as I slipped my phone into my pocket.
Please enjoy:“She’s had one for two years now.
Please enjoy:Also, if you take your pants off, you’ll get bug bites on your ass.”
Please enjoy:Leif thankfully took his paw away from his half-loosened belt
Please enjoy:and stood up. “Somebody sounds bitter.
Please enjoy:You get laid yet?”
Please enjoy:“I’m focused on job searching,”
Please enjoy:I grumbled. “Haven’t you been offered, like, three jobs since the summer started?”
Please enjoy:“The right job.” Leif scratched his ear.
Please enjoy:“If someone shows up offering you a job,
Please enjoy:it’s the right job. Look
Please enjoy:at my insurance job.
Please enjoy:I wasn’t looking to work in insurance, but then I got the offer.
Please enjoy:Seriously though,
Please enjoy:do I look like the kind of guy who would sell insurance?”
Please enjoy:I shrugged. “You’re friendly and you’re a smooth talker.
Please enjoy:You could do it. Plus, ‘tail
Please enjoy:insurance’ sounds just innuendo-y enough for your liking.”
Please enjoy:“It’s totally real,
Please enjoy:man,” Leif said. “You try walking around without a tail and see how many times you fall flat on your ass.”
Please enjoy:As if to make a point,
Please enjoy:he stood on one leg at the tip of another rock.
Please enjoy:“Lots of pop stars and athletes get it.
Please enjoy:Who knows, maybe I’ll do the insurance plan on some dog’s tail and he’ll get me a part in his next movie.”
Please enjoy:“Looks like you’ve got it all figured out,” I said,
Please enjoy:my paws shoved into my pockets.
Please enjoy:I fell behind him so Leif wouldn’t see me scowl,
Please enjoy:but he slowed to match my pace.
Please enjoy:“Yeah, but I have to wear a suit,”
Please enjoy:Leif said, wrinkling his muzzle.
Please enjoy:“Don’t get me wrong, going classy like James Bond every now and then is cool,
Please enjoy:but the whole week?” He shoved a hanging tree branch out of the way.
Please enjoy:“And I have to work Saturdays,
Please enjoy:dude. Saturdays! Okay, only, like, every other Saturday, but still!
Please enjoy:Who starts the weekend by thinking, ‘Hey, let’s buy an insurance policy’?”
Please enjoy:I curled my tail closer around my legs,
Please enjoy:the fur standing on end.
Please enjoy:“We’ve been walking for an hour.
Please enjoy:How much longer?” “I’ll check the map,”
Please enjoy:Leif said as he pulled out his phone.
Please enjoy:I looked over his shoulder.
Please enjoy:“Which path is this?”
Please enjoy:“The Sunset Path,” Leif said.
Please enjoy:The Sunset Path arced loosely until making a tight circle around the lake and back to the visitor center.
Please enjoy:“This isn’t anywhere near the top of the park!”
Please enjoy:“Oh shit!” Leif said, a hint of a laugh in his voice.
Please enjoy:“I thought this was called “Sunset Path” because people looked out at the sunset at the top,
Please enjoy:not at the lake. My bad!”
Please enjoy:I glimpsed at the sinking sun.
Please enjoy:“Whatever. Let’s just head back.”
Please enjoy:“No way!” Leif said,
Please enjoy:shoving his phone into his pocket.
Please enjoy:“We have to get to the top!”
Please enjoy:“But the park closes at dark,” I said,
Please enjoy:already making my way back.
Please enjoy:“Hold on!” Leif said, grabbing my arm.
Please enjoy:He scanned the surroundings, sniffing the air like he could smell a shortcut.
Please enjoy:“The rock’s not that far from here.
Please enjoy:It’ll be a half hour tops to get there and that long to go back down.”
Please enjoy:He loosened his grip. “Come
Please enjoy:on. What’s another hour for an adventure?
Please enjoy:We can find this rock.”
Please enjoy:I folded my arms and turned back to him.
Please enjoy:“It’s just a stupid rock.
Please enjoy:What’s so important about it?
Please enjoy:“You’re in a bad place, Alec,” Leif said.
Please enjoy:“You get rejected enough and you’ll be all ‘why bother?’
Please enjoy:Well, even if this rock isn’t magical or whatever,
Please enjoy:I’m not leaving until we’ve both touched it.
Please enjoy:Once we’ve touched that rock, we’ve succeeded.
Please enjoy:If we keep going,
Please enjoy:we haven’t failed.”
Please enjoy:I pinched the bridge of my nose.
Please enjoy:His tail wagged. It was like Leif was waiting for a treat.
Please enjoy:“Fine.” # The overhanging trees blocked out the last bits of light the moon provided,
Please enjoy:and a cricket chorus played on.
Please enjoy:My thighs ached. The next pebble I stepped on, I was going to chuck it as far as I could.
Please enjoy:“You’re sure we’re almost there?”
Please enjoy:After a few seconds, Leif said,
Please enjoy:“Pretty sure.” He panted,
Please enjoy:a bit of saliva dripping off the tip of his tongue.
Please enjoy:I pulled out my phone.
Please enjoy:“If you won’t check the map, I will.”
Please enjoy:“Come on, have some faith in my navigation skills.”
Please enjoy:“Well excuse me for wanting to know where I’m going,”
Please enjoy:I said. “Blind faith doesn’t always cut it.
Please enjoy:The least you could do to help is pull up your flashlight app.”
Please enjoy:“Checking the map earlier drained my battery,” Leif said.
Please enjoy:“My bad.” “Okay, seriously,”
Please enjoy:I said as I stopped. “Leif,
Please enjoy:it’s dark, and we can barely see where we’re going.”
Please enjoy:“But you’re a cat,” Leif said.
Please enjoy:“Don’t you have night vision or something?”
Please enjoy:“That’s not the point,”
Please enjoy:I hissed. “Let’s—” “Dude.”
Please enjoy:“What?” “Between those two trees,”
Please enjoy:Leif said. He wasn’t smiling,
Please enjoy:but the swishing of his tail spoke for him.
Please enjoy:“What’s that look like?”
Please enjoy:I squinted. There was certainly something with a thing sticking out of it.
Please enjoy:Still, it was more than what I’d seen during our search.
Please enjoy:Leif jabbed my shoulder, and we raced over to the something.
Please enjoy:When we got there, I held up my phone and turned the flashlight app on.
Please enjoy:A rectangular sign pointing downward diagonally read,
Please enjoy:“Visitor Center: 1.5 miles.”
Please enjoy:“I swore it was here,”
Please enjoy:Leif said, looking around.
Please enjoy:“I’m leaving,” I said, turning around.
Please enjoy:“It has to be nearby,”
Please enjoy:Leif said. “I bet we find it in five minutes. No, less than five minutes.
Please enjoy:Then we can head back down.”
Please enjoy:“No, here’s what’s going to happen,”
Please enjoy:I said, my claws sliding out.
Please enjoy:“I’m going back down,
Please enjoy:I’m getting in my car, and whether or not you’re with me, I’m leaving.”
Please enjoy:“Alec, don’t be like that.”
Please enjoy:He put his paw on me, but I swatted it away.
Please enjoy:“Look, this was fun at first, but I’m not sticking around to get another bug bite so you can touch a rock because it’s somehow more special
Please enjoy:than the million other rocks here!”
Please enjoy:“It brings good fortune,”
Please enjoy:Leif growled. “Why the hell do you need good fortune?”
Please enjoy:I said. “Your family’s loaded, you coasted your way through high school, still managed to get into a good college, and you’re starting a job soon.”
Please enjoy:Leif shoved his face close to mine.
Please enjoy:“What, you think once you’ve got money and a job that everything’s going to be fine?”
Please enjoy:I wrinkled my nose at his dog breath.
Please enjoy:“That does seem like the winning combination.”
Please enjoy:“It’s not that simple!”
Please enjoy:Leif barked, grabbing the front of my shirt.
Please enjoy:“Well excuse me,” I scoffed, putting my paws up.
Please enjoy:“You make it look easy. Now let go!”
Please enjoy:It was supposed to be a push, but it surprised me how much strength I put into it.
Please enjoy:The front of my shirt tore
Please enjoy:and Leif staggered back.
Please enjoy:Then he wasn’t there. “L
Please enjoy:-Leif?” I called. I stepped forward and almost tumbled over the edge of the path.
Please enjoy:I slipped into a crouch,
Please enjoy:staring into the black beneath me.
Please enjoy:“Leif!” Only crickets answered.
Please enjoy:I grabbed my phone to pull up the flashlight app.
Please enjoy:As I pulled the phone out of my pocket, it slipped from my hand
Please enjoy:and was swallowed by a darkness my sight couldn’t penetrate.
Please enjoy:I dug my fingers into the dirt
Please enjoy:and opened my mouth,
Please enjoy:but my throat was too tight.
Please enjoy:Even my voice was gone.
Please enjoy:I wondered what it’d be like covering a story like this and what the headline in tomorrow’s paper would read.
Please enjoy:“Local Resident Kills Friend in Petty Argument Over Rock.”
Please enjoy:I could see myself in handcuffs being led to an awaiting patrol car
Please enjoy:and the reporters swarming me, asking me why I did it.
Please enjoy:I wouldn’t give them a sensational story,
Please enjoy:just the truth. I killed my best friend because I was an idiot who was scared of my future or lack of one.
Please enjoy:“Asshole!” “Leif?” I said, my voice high and thick.
Please enjoy:His voice was loud and blessedly close.
Please enjoy:I slipped over the edge of the path,
Please enjoy:hanging by my paws, and let go.
Please enjoy:I fell into a crouch about a yard down.
Please enjoy:Leif lay on his back on an earthy jut of land
Please enjoy:hanging from the path.
Please enjoy:I hopped down and knelt by his side.
Please enjoy:“I’m so sorry! I didn’t mean it,
Please enjoy:I swear! I’m going to pick you up and carry you back down.
Please enjoy:I might drop you, but that’s because I don’t have any muscles.”
Please enjoy:“Shut up,” Leif said,
Please enjoy:his chest heaving.
Please enjoy:“Just the wind … knocked out of me.”
Please enjoy:I reached out, but he shook his head.
Please enjoy:“Just give me … a few minutes …
Please enjoy:to catch my breath.”
Please enjoy:It’s awkward standing over someone, so I lay down next to him.
Please enjoy:If a park ranger found us, it’d look like we were chilling and I didn’t just almost murder my best friend.
Please enjoy:On this spit of land, the trees didn’t reach out far enough to block out the sky.
Please enjoy:A spattering of stars freckled the night sky.
Please enjoy:“My bad,” I said. “You could have killed me,”
Please enjoy:Leif said dully. “I was freaked out.”
Please enjoy:“I wasn’t going to punch you or anything.”
Please enjoy:I sighed. “No, it wasn’t you.”
Please enjoy:I rested my paws on my chest.
Please enjoy:“I’ve applied to that journalism job more times than I can count,
Please enjoy:but it’s like they don’t notice me.
Please enjoy:I’m like a rock.” “You’re not a rock,”
Please enjoy:Leif said, rolling onto his side.
Please enjoy:“Your head’s just as hard as one sometimes.”
Please enjoy:I snorted. “Thanks, but I feel like one.”
Please enjoy:“Compared to your siblings?”
Please enjoy:Leif added. I rolled over to face him.
Please enjoy:“A master accountant and an Olympian to be.
Please enjoy:I can’t compete.” “There’s something you need to know to get through life,”
Please enjoy:Leif said. “When it comes to other people, especially your siblings,
Please enjoy:don’t compare them to you or whatever.
Please enjoy:Just do you and be awesome at it.”
Please enjoy:I smirked. “I’ll try to squeeze that in between all the panicking.”
Please enjoy:“Hell, I’m still panicking,”
Please enjoy:Leif said. “I was going into my last semester and I realized I had no
Please enjoy:clue what was after college.
Please enjoy:I was, like, ‘now what?’
Please enjoy:I threw my resume at everyone so someone could rescue me and give me that step.”
Please enjoy:“Well, it worked out,”
Please enjoy:I said, rolling onto my back.
Please enjoy:“I don’t even know how I got this insurance job,”
Please enjoy:Leif said, scratching his ear.
Please enjoy:“I think they were at a job fair, but I don’t remember giving them my resume.
Please enjoy:Then I got a phone call, which turned into an interview, which turned into a second interview, which turned into a job offer.
Please enjoy:I didn’t even think.
Please enjoy:All I knew was that someone gave me my next step and I took it.
Please enjoy:“I was happy at first because I wasn’t panicking,”
Please enjoy:Leif added. “But then the closer I got to my start date,
Please enjoy:the more I realized when someone asks me what I do for a living,
Please enjoy:I’d have to tell them I sell insurance.
Please enjoy:What cub grows up wanting to sell insurance?”
Please enjoy:“And touching a rock would have fixed that?” I asked.
Please enjoy:“Well, it wouldn’t have hurt.”
Please enjoy:I shrugged. “Fair enough.
Please enjoy:Did you talk with your parents about the insurance job?”
Please enjoy:“A little bit,” Leif said.
Please enjoy:“I’ll just do this until I find my calling or I hate the hell out of it.
Please enjoy:I mean, we’re in our early twenties.
Please enjoy:That makes me feel super old, but compared to my parents, I’m still a cub.
Please enjoy:We’ve got time to figure this out, right?”
Please enjoy:“Don’t look at me. This is your motivational speech.”
Please enjoy:I traced the crescent moon with my finger.
Please enjoy:“The whole getting-my-shit-together thing still seems far away.”
Please enjoy:“Yeah,” said Leif. “But until then,
Please enjoy:we can panic together.”
Please enjoy:He sighed. “Shit, it’s dark.”
Please enjoy:I sat up and grabbed my phone from the ground.
Please enjoy:There weren’t any new scratches on the screen.
Please enjoy:“I’ve still got my cell phone light.”
Please enjoy:Leif shook his head.
Please enjoy:“I almost died once tonight.
Please enjoy:Let’s not go deeper in the woods and find some chainsaw-wielding hermit.
Please enjoy:You know what’d make this night better?
Please enjoy:Pizza.” I stuck my paw out and pulled Leif up.
Please enjoy:“Sounds good, if you’re buying.”
Please enjoy:“You almost killed me tonight.
Please enjoy:If that doesn’t earn me a free meal, I don’t know what does.”
Please enjoy:I clicked my flashlight app.
Please enjoy:“You’re going to hold that over me for life, aren’t you?”
Please enjoy:Leif laughed and I found myself laughing too.
Please enjoy:I gave him a little head butt because it was dark
Please enjoy:and we were alive.
Please enjoy:As we walked down the rocky path to the visitor center,
Please enjoy:I was tempted to race up that mountain or drive anywhere.
Please enjoy:Maybe it was the lack of light pollution or my eyes adjusting to the dark,
Please enjoy:but my path seemed brighter tonight.
