Speaker:

Today we'll be talking about August Marquette, who co wrote The Three Musketeers.

Speaker:

August Mackett, September 13, 1813 to January 1888, was a French author best known as the chief collaborator of French novelist Alexandra Dumas, Pierre Cowriting, such works as The Count of Monte Cristo and The Three Musketeers.

Speaker:

Mackett was born in Paris in 1813.

Speaker:

He studied at the Ly Sea Charlemagne, where he became a professor at the age of 18.

Speaker:

Trained as a historian, he turned to literature and became close with such literary figures as the official Gutierre and Gerard de Navelle.

Speaker:

Through Noervel, he became acquainted with the already famous Dumas.

Speaker:

In 1838, Gerard de Navervel introduced Mackett to Dumas and asked the famous author to rewrite a play of Maquette's and publish it under his own name.

Speaker:

Dumas was then given a manuscript by Maquette, which Dumas went on to publish under his own name as Le Chevier de Harmontel.

Speaker:

The two started writing historical romances together with Mackette, outlining the plot and characters in draft form and Dumas adding colorful dialogue and details.

Speaker:

At the insistence of and upon payment by the publisher, Mckette's name was left off the title page.

Speaker:

The collaboration with Dumas ended in 1851.

Speaker:

Mckett had earlier sued Dumas, demanding coauthorship and royalties, but the court found in favor of Dumas on the grounds that Dumas, without Mackette, would have been Dumas.

Speaker:

What would maket have been without Dumas.

Speaker:

Mackette went on to produce a large solo body of work, historical romances plays, and an opera libretto.

Speaker:

In 1861, he became an officer of the Legion deonnare Mackette died comfortably, well off.

Speaker:

He is buried in Pierre La Caisse Cemetery in Paris.

Speaker:

His brother Charles and Hector Mackette were the founders of the luxury stationary manufacturer Maizen Mackette.

Speaker:

Many devotees of Dumas claim that Mackette was merely a dog's body whose capacity for hard work was his greatest talent.

Speaker:

Others, such as French Dumas expert Claude Shop, have claimed that Maquette was the real fourth Musketeer responsible for the plots of the D'Artagnan romances.

Speaker:

Author Bernard Filler says, There is a tendency to dismiss Mquette as a Drudge, and that's just wrong.

Speaker:

Of course, he wasn't a Balzac or a Dickens, but he definitely had talent.

Speaker:

Mquette was portrayed by Belgian actor Benoit Polovjord in Latre Dumas The Other Dumas, 2010.

Speaker:

Maquette collaborated with Dumas on 18 novels in many plays, including Le Chevre de Jamentel.

Speaker:

Mackett's Outline was called Bonam Bouvat Silavandayer, based on Le Memoirs de Madame, La Marquis de Frasene by Gatien de Cuelettes de Sandras, La Filet duriant The Three Musketeers, The Count of Monte Cristo, 20 years after La Girille de FEMA, Queen Margot, La Chevre de Mason Rouge, The Dame desmonthro les QUANTESS, Sink, the Baitard du Malion, Las Memoirs, Duane Madison, Joseph Palsomo, Le Vecomte de Braganyon, The Queen's Necklace, The Black Tulip, Olempe de Cleves, Engeto injuane Ber Hildais and Queen Margot.
