Shownotes

Assess how feeling career stuck is impacting you across ten areas of life - in 30 minutes.  Then, decide what you want to do about it.

-

Do you find yourself constantly putting everyone else’s needs ahead of your own at work? Whether it’s your boss, your team, or your colleagues, prioritizing others can feel like kindness—but unchecked, it leads to burnout, resentment, and exhaustion.

This week’s Joy at Work Experiment is all about shifting that pattern, even just a little. Instead of giving from an empty cup, I want you to choose one small thing that refuels you—something that strengthens, relaxes, or simply lightens your week. It doesn’t have to be big, but it does have to be yours.

Transcripts

Lucia Knight:

You're busy, yeah?

Lucia Knight:

There's never enough time to focus on your future work happiness.

Lucia Knight:

But if you don't focus on it, things just stay the same, don't they?

Lucia Knight:

In these short episodes, I wanna give you some tiny ideas, some mini experiments

Lucia Knight:

to try out this week to either dial down a pain point for you at work or

Lucia Knight:

dial up your potential for joy at work.

Lucia Knight:

Let's dive in.

Lucia Knight:

Sometimes, because of our childhoods, our personalities, or our caring

Lucia Knight:

responsibilities, we instinctively put others needs before our own.

Lucia Knight:

And of course, there are times when this is absolutely necessary.

Lucia Knight:

If a child, partner, or parent is sick, we drop everything to care for them.

Lucia Knight:

That's love.

Lucia Knight:

That's life.

Lucia Knight:

But when prioritizing others becomes a daily habit, something shifts.

Lucia Knight:

Over time, we risk giving from an empty cup.

Lucia Knight:

And if you've ever felt bone deep exhaustion, you'll know

Lucia Knight:

empty cups are kind of useless.

Lucia Knight:

I see this workplace trap all the time.

Lucia Knight:

Brilliant, talented, and kind professionals who consistently put the

Lucia Knight:

needs of their boss, their team, or their colleagues ahead of their own.

Lucia Knight:

At first, This looks like kindness, but unchecked, it leads directly

Lucia Knight:

to burnout, resentment, confusion, and a whole lot of other emotions

Lucia Knight:

that we don't really need at work.

Lucia Knight:

So why does this happen?

Lucia Knight:

There are so many reasons.

Lucia Knight:

Here's a list, a starter list.

Lucia Knight:

Genuine kindness and care for others.

Lucia Knight:

A lack of awareness of our own needs.

Lucia Knight:

Deeply ingrained people pleasing behaviors, said the recovered

Lucia Knight:

or recovering people pleaser.

Lucia Knight:

Conflict avoidance.

Lucia Knight:

When it just feels easier in the moment.

Lucia Knight:

The belief that prioritizing others will save time.

Lucia Knight:

Not having the language to say no.

Lucia Knight:

Not having the language to say no but.

Lucia Knight:

Not having the language to say yes, but not now.

Lucia Knight:

A lack of training in how to set and communicate boundaries.

Lucia Knight:

Uncertainty about our core values, making it kind of hard to advocate for them.

Lucia Knight:

Or the pressure of making quick decisions under stress.

Lucia Knight:

And often, of course, it's not just one of these.

Lucia Knight:

It's a mix of several of them.

Lucia Knight:

In life, those one off moments of putting others needs first are unavoidable.

Lucia Knight:

Especially in midlife, when we're sometimes sandwiched between

Lucia Knight:

caring for our young people and our elderly people at the same time.

Lucia Knight:

But if our default setting is to meet everyone else's needs before our own,

Lucia Knight:

the result isn't just exhaustion.

Lucia Knight:

It's frustration.

Lucia Knight:

It's bitterness.

Lucia Knight:

It's feeling stretched so thin that there's nothing left for ourselves.

Lucia Knight:

And frankly, life's too short for that.

Lucia Knight:

At the heart of this is a simple but often overlooked truth.

Lucia Knight:

We must understand and prioritize our own needs before we can help anyone else.

Lucia Knight:

This week's Joy at Work experiment.

Lucia Knight:

This week, I want you to choose just one thing that you truly need.

Lucia Knight:

Something that you can control.

Lucia Knight:

Something that fills you up, rejuvenates you, strengthens you, or simply makes

Lucia Knight:

the rest of the week feel lighter.

Lucia Knight:

It does not have to be big.

Lucia Knight:

It just has to be yours.

Lucia Knight:

For me, this week, it's an early morning swim.

Lucia Knight:

The deep breaths, the feeling of weightlessness, the quiet of the water.

Lucia Knight:

The way my sore hip doesn't ache afterwards for a couple of hours.

Lucia Knight:

It just powers me up.

Lucia Knight:

And when I'm swimming, no one needs me, or can get to me.

Lucia Knight:

For you, it might be something else.

Lucia Knight:

Ten minute walk in the garden.

Lucia Knight:

Coffee with a friend.

Lucia Knight:

No agenda, just connection.

Lucia Knight:

Doodling, baking, crafting.

Lucia Knight:

Whatever taps into your creativity.

Lucia Knight:

A long shower without rushing.

Lucia Knight:

A drive with your favourite audiobook or music playlist.

Lucia Knight:

A trip to the cinema.

Lucia Knight:

Why not?

Lucia Knight:

30 minutes of alone time to finally plan that fun thing you've

Lucia Knight:

been meaning to do for months.

Lucia Knight:

Your mind and body will repay you in kind.

Lucia Knight:

It seems simple, but when we're busy, we often disconnect from our needs.

Lucia Knight:

We tell ourselves, we'll get to those later.

Lucia Knight:

But later gets pushed again and again.

Lucia Knight:

This week, don't change everything, just change one thing.

Lucia Knight:

Prioritise one small action that makes your week feel better, easier and lighter.

Lucia Knight:

Because as the old L'Oreal ad used to say, you're worth it.

Lucia Knight:

If you enjoyed this, you might also enjoy my Life Satisfaction Assessment.

Lucia Knight:

It's a 30 minute program where I guide you through a deep dive into 10 areas

Lucia Knight:

of your life to assess what's bringing you joy and what's bringing you down.

Lucia Knight:

I call it D Railed.

Lucia Knight:

It's a fabulous place to begin a joy at work redesign.
