At the center of Paul’s teaching is a priority that should shape both churches and individual Christians: the Gospel comes first. Those serving in the temple received a portion of the offerings, establishing a biblical principle that people devoted to spiritual service may properly receive support from that work. Yet Paul’s greater concern was never simply compensation; it was protecting the message of Christ. Dr. Dave emphasizes that healthy ecclesiology keeps the Gospel at the center of everything because it is God’s power unto salvation. The same principle applies personally. Someone shared the Gospel with us, and somebody else still needs to hear it from us. Whatever legitimate rights, structures, or practices surround ministry, none should become more important than bringing glory to the Father through Jesus Christ in the power of the Holy Spirit.

Receiving support for ministry can be biblical while still being personally difficult. Scripture plainly teaches that those who devote their lives to preaching the Gospel may receive their living from that ministry. Dr. Dave shares his own experience moving between bivocational work and relying entirely upon ministry support, describing how challenging it can be for someone accustomed to working and producing to simply receive what God provides through others. Sometimes obedience means doing more; other times God may be teaching us to remain where He placed us, receive His provision, and concentrate upon the assignment He has given. Scripture leaves room for both approaches. Paul and Barnabas sometimes worked, while other apostles devoted themselves fully to prayer and the Word. Neither model should become a reason for Christians to condemn someone following a different calling.

Humility becomes unmistakable when Paul explains that although he possessed the right to receive support, he refused to pressure anyone or allow money to cloud the message he was preaching. His commitment remained the same whether people supported him financially or not: proclaim Christ, strengthen believers, and advance God’s kingdom. Dr. Dave identifies deeply with that attitude and presents it as a standard worth pursuing in ministry today. The goal is not perfection but maintaining the proper priority. Ministers may serve full-time, work another vocation, or move between those seasons according to God’s direction. What must never change is the supremacy of the Gospel. Paul was willing to sacrifice legitimate rights and personal convenience rather than give anyone reason to question his motives. God’s message was more important to Paul than Paul’s comfort—and that is what love for God looks like.
