Speaker:

Hey, welcome back to another

episode of the daily Bible podcast.

2

:

things are finally back the

way they're supposed to be.

3

:

Normally things in order life is better.

4

:

I'm sleeping better and longer these days.

5

:

I just feel like this is an

occasion that we all should stop

6

:

and thank God for celebrate.

7

:

We should celebrate the

faithfulness of people.

8

:

On their podcast, listener players

are celebrating everywhere.

9

:

Fine.

10

:

No, I heard good things about

the daily Bible rod cast.

11

:

They're there.

12

:

They're glad that it was over.

13

:

The good things I heard,

they was so good to be done.

14

:

I know people were sending emails.

15

:

I saw emails come in while I was

gone that were talking about, Hey,

16

:

great insights and super helpful.

17

:

People are kind.

18

:

And we know that man, when, when.

19

:

And you step out of the pulpit

and you feel like it was a dud.

20

:

People are always going to say good job.

21

:

They love you.

22

:

They care about you and they just

turn around and hit for the donuts.

23

:

That's true.

24

:

But, you know, people want

to be an encouragement to

25

:

us, and I appreciate that.

26

:

I'm not demeaning that at all.

27

:

I've appreciated the encouragement.

28

:

But I also take it in stride.

29

:

It's that, uh, that old

preacher saying, right?

30

:

Don't uh, don't read your own headlines.

31

:

Don't believe your own headlines.

32

:

There's another corollary to that.

33

:

About the opposite side, like don't preach

yourself to death or something like that.

34

:

Yeah.

35

:

Yeah.

36

:

I had a, he wasn't a pastor or an

elder, but he was a worship leader at

37

:

the church that I was at in seminary.

38

:

He said, You know, when people criticize

you, you're never as good as you,

39

:

as people say you are, and you're

never as bad as people say you are.

40

:

You're.

41

:

You're somewhere in the middle.

42

:

They're as bad as you think you are.

43

:

And as good as they say you are, right?

44

:

Yeah.

45

:

That's a, I, I resonate with that.

46

:

Yeah.

47

:

So I'm glad that I did it.

48

:

It felt different than

what we normally do.

49

:

So it was a learning experience for me.

50

:

And part of me was like,

oh, I want to get this done.

51

:

Right.

52

:

I want to do it.

53

:

Right.

54

:

And I kept on.

55

:

Sometimes I would feel like I get closer.

56

:

Many times I'm like, ah, I

learned how to edit a lot.

57

:

And cut myself out and I was

like, okay, why did I say that?

58

:

I'm just gonna take that out.

59

:

And then I took out a bunch of stuff.

60

:

Like I just got, I got trigger happy.

61

:

Well, I get to do this in August, cause

you're going to be taking a break and

62

:

I'm going to take it even longer now.

63

:

Okay.

64

:

I'm going to do six months.

65

:

Yeah.

66

:

That you do this.

67

:

I feel like that's the

least I could give for you.

68

:

Yeah, well, maybe not,

maybe don't do that.

69

:

Yeah.

70

:

Hey, we I'm glad to be back though.

71

:

It's fun.

72

:

It's glad to.

73

:

You look well rested.

74

:

It was an awesome trip.

75

:

It was a good vacation.

76

:

I was telling my wife, I think this

vacation was one of the first that

77

:

I can remember in a long time that

I was completely felt detached.

78

:

I felt like I unplugged, I

wasn't worried about things here.

79

:

I knew you had it in the pulpit and then

in the podcast, Side of things and just.

80

:

Day-in and day-out ministry.

81

:

And so just good time with my family.

82

:

Um, you know, boys college was

a, that tour was, was good.

83

:

Was fun.

84

:

The arc was okay.

85

:

Um, The scale of it was impressive.

86

:

Size wise, you certainly stand

in front of it and go, whoa.

87

:

Like this is amazing.

88

:

That big building.

89

:

Yeah.

90

:

But he built that.

91

:

Uh, but then the interior was.

92

:

Eh, it was okay.

93

:

It left something to be desired for me.

94

:

So in that.

95

:

Uh, it just, it was, I mean, a lot,

obviously a lot of it is, is just

96

:

sheer speculation on the interior.

97

:

We don't know.

98

:

A whole lot about what

the interior looked like.

99

:

Sure.

100

:

And not that I disagreed with any of

the information, it was packed, man.

101

:

There were like 5,000

people inside that thing.

102

:

And crowds.

103

:

So this was my favorite thing.

104

:

Yeah.

105

:

So anyways, we did the arc

and then DC was, was great.

106

:

I mean, we saw a ton of stuff

there and, uh, it was good.

107

:

My wife did DC school with

my kids before we went.

108

:

And each of them had to do a report

on a different site that we saw.

109

:

So that was kind of cool too.

110

:

Good.

111

:

I see them take some

ownership there and yeah.

112

:

Yeah.

113

:

It was awesome.

114

:

Good time.

115

:

Good.

116

:

Yeah.

117

:

Well, on behalf of all of us,

the 10 thousands of thousands of

118

:

listeners that are part of this

community, We welcome you back.

119

:

We are grateful.

120

:

We're still waiting for our

40 lessons from 40 years.

121

:

I don't know when that's coming.

122

:

See.

123

:

I had the, we had the reverse,

my wife calls it a reverse

124

:

surprise party the other day.

125

:

That was fun.

126

:

That was fun.

127

:

There wasn't 40, less.

128

:

But I addressed the, I address the room

and there was, was there 40 lessons?

129

:

No, there was one main lesson

and that's the one that I shared

130

:

already on the podcast about,

Hey, today is part of my next 40.

131

:

So that's where I'm at.

132

:

That's what I'm still thinking about that.

133

:

That's still less than 40.

134

:

It is, it is.

135

:

Yeah.

136

:

It's there's 39 more, but stay tuned.

137

:

Okay, maybe I'll just let you do 39.

138

:

Cause your 40th is, is next on the docket.

139

:

Yeah.

140

:

It is.

141

:

Yeah.

142

:

Hey, we have the pride

in the sky then we did.

143

:

And it was not related to anything

LGBTQ plus, just to be clear.

144

:

Nope, but it was a great event.

145

:

Lots of our, our family,

I was going to say are.

146

:

We are friends, but our

family church, family.

147

:

Yeah.

148

:

There.

149

:

They're basically family to us.

150

:

Yeah.

151

:

It came out.

152

:

It was a good event and it was hotter

this year, but it didn't feel as bad.

153

:

No.

154

:

I think our booth location

was a little bit better.

155

:

The son was not.

156

:

Facing directly at us.

157

:

We came in clutch, got us a good spot.

158

:

We were in the shade for most of it.

159

:

Yeah, it was good.

160

:

And then the Kroger truck

was giving out free food.

161

:

That was, if that was happening

last year, I did not know.

162

:

I would have taken advantage of, yeah.

163

:

Now I know to look out for it next year.

164

:

And it's just a good reminder.

165

:

Um, I mean, I don't know

how many people were there.

166

:

Thousands of people were there.

167

:

And we had a lot of conversations.

168

:

I think we passed out close to a

thousand invitations to church, to

169

:

the transformed conference in also to.

170

:

Um, the, uh, Not the, uh, yeah, the VBS.

171

:

And so we, I mean, Mark get ready.

172

:

Cause you might be looking at

about a thousand registered

173

:

for, uh, for VBS coming up here.

174

:

But one of the things that struck me

in just talking with people as they

175

:

were walking by our booth and passing

out water bottles, I, I asked a lot of

176

:

people, Hey, do you go to church anywhere?

177

:

And, um, I was just surprised.

178

:

I shouldn't have been at the

number of people that kind of said

179

:

a little bit or just flat out.

180

:

No.

181

:

Right.

182

:

And I think.

183

:

It's just a good reminder to us.

184

:

Kind of like what I was preaching

on last weekend about needing

185

:

to be a light in the midst of

darkness that, uh, there's darkness.

186

:

All around us and we have to be ready

and we have to be willing to have hard

187

:

conversations with people who at the

end of the day are willing to talk.

188

:

If you're, if you're kind,

if you're not a jerk.

189

:

Most people will talk to you

about what they believe about God

190

:

and about eternity until after.

191

:

Have to death and.

192

:

And.

193

:

I found just in having some

conversations with people at this event.

194

:

It's, it's, it's exciting when you

get to have those conversations and

195

:

somebody is willing to engage you and

kind of think through those things.

196

:

Even if right there.

197

:

And then in there they don't

say, yeah, I want to be there.

198

:

I'll become a Christian or

whatever they walk away and

199

:

you're like, okay, seed planted.

200

:

And it also is an encouragement to

your faith as well in the process.

201

:

Oh, totally.

202

:

I just finished a book recently called

the great Uh, and it's, it's a, it's

203

:

a modern book about what's happening

in our current culture, people leaving

204

:

churches and especially about the

people that left church during COVID

205

:

and just haven't come back yet.

206

:

And one of the most surprising results

of this is that for a ton of people,

207

:

I forget the number it's very large.

208

:

They are willing to come back.

209

:

They just need someone to invite them

and kind of give them the old swift kick

210

:

in the rear end to come back to church.

211

:

And sometimes it's as simple as that.

212

:

You know, uh, a chance encounter with the

pastor chance, you know, air quotes here.

213

:

But a chance encounter with a

pastor to say, Hey, You know,

214

:

Where do you go to church?

215

:

Maybe they need to come back to our church

instead of the one you used to go to.

216

:

Now, now that we're in the sheep stealing,

but just getting people into church, it's

217

:

really surprising this book, the great

churching who's leaving, why they're going

218

:

and what it will take to get them back.

219

:

One of the biggest takeaways for me

is some people just need to be invited

220

:

by someone that cares about them.

221

:

Right.

222

:

And don't forget the

challenge that was issued.

223

:

On Sunday.

224

:

That find a family, find somebody in your

neighborhood, somebody on your street

225

:

that you don't know super well having

dinner between down the end of the summer.

226

:

That's our challenge for us as a church.

227

:

And when you do that, there's an

opportunity for you right there to

228

:

reach out to them and say, Hey, why

don't you come with us on Sunday?

229

:

Right.

230

:

If they've got kids, invite them to

get their kids registered for VBS,

231

:

which is a great on-ramp as well.

232

:

So, uh, there you go.

233

:

Don't, uh, don't forget that,

that challenge invite a family

234

:

over, have them over for dinner.

235

:

Spend some time with them.

236

:

And look, don't stop there.

237

:

It's not like you have to stop

with one family go after other

238

:

families on your street to you.

239

:

I mean, that's, that's our goal.

240

:

That's our target.

241

:

That's what we're

wanting to be about that.

242

:

Pray about that.

243

:

We, we, we want this.

244

:

We were hungry for this.

245

:

The pray for that.

246

:

I mean, just pray, pray that

God opened doors for you.

247

:

I mean, sometimes that's a scary

prayer because when he does and you

248

:

feel obligated to just step through

it, but that's, that's the point.

249

:

Yeah.

250

:

Burn your bridges, Cortez.

251

:

Yep.

252

:

Yep.

253

:

Burn the ships.

254

:

That's what I meant in the bridges

and both burned both of them.

255

:

Yeah.

256

:

Burn both.

257

:

All of them.

258

:

Yeah.

259

:

Yeah.

260

:

Hey.

261

:

Uh, let's jump into our text.

262

:

For the day.

263

:

This is where I'm going to just lay out

and let you just handle it from all right.

264

:

Yeah.

265

:

I'm used to it now.

266

:

Yeah, you are.

267

:

You're our second case.

268

:

5 6, 7 and eight.

269

:

There's a lot here.

270

:

There's a ton.

271

:

I don't know how we're

going to get through this.

272

:

We're going to do our best.

273

:

The second Kings chapter five, uh,

basically the, the, the gist of this

274

:

chapter, in fact, that the whole part

of the chapter is the story of Naman.

275

:

Uh, Naman.

276

:

Yeah, not that guy, a different one, a

naming key figure in the Syrian army.

277

:

So not a follower of gun.

278

:

Uh, not a member of Israel, not

certainly a member of Judah, but a

279

:

part of the Syrian army commander

of the king King's army of Syria.

280

:

There.

281

:

And so he shows up on the scene

and he is afflicted with leprosy

282

:

and leprosy being an awful disease.

283

:

He hears that there is a man of God

in some area in which is the capital

284

:

of Israel, the Northern kingdom there.

285

:

Who is, uh, is powerful and he

thinks, well, maybe this guy

286

:

can take care of my leprosy.

287

:

So he ends up going there.

288

:

Makes his way, long story short over

to the house where Lusha happens to

289

:

be a servant girl goes to meet him.

290

:

It says, here's your instructions.

291

:

You need to go to the Jordan river and

dip yourself in the water seven times

292

:

and you'll be cleansed of your leprosy.

293

:

And initially Naman is outraged here.

294

:

He thinks there's no way

I'm going to do this.

295

:

This is absurd.

296

:

I've we've got better rivers,

cleaner rivers back where I'm from.

297

:

How dare you treat me this way.

298

:

And I think also his pride, his

incense, that he didn't even get to

299

:

see a Lysa at this point or Elijah

at this point, he, uh, he got right.

300

:

Alicia, Alicia.

301

:

Thank you.

302

:

Yeah.

303

:

Misfiring there.

304

:

Anyways, he's incense there that, that

he has the servant girl and beat him when

305

:

he's a man of such power and prestige.

306

:

But eventually as he's going,

uh, he's convinced to at least

307

:

try it and he does it and washes

and comes out and he's clean.

308

:

Uh, it goes back to the house and he

is excited about this and wants to pay.

309

:

He wants to, to offer reward for, uh,

for being cleansed, for being healed.

310

:

And Alicia said, no, we're

not going to take this.

311

:

Meanwhile, one of Alicia's

servants get HASI.

312

:

Uh, here's what the, what name it

had offered and here's his master.

313

:

Elatia turn it down and

is upset about that.

314

:

And so he takes off after name

and afterwards and goes to him and

315

:

says, Hey, actually, you know what?

316

:

We changed our mind.

317

:

We would like to have the, the

gift that you were willing to give.

318

:

Uh, lies about it and deceives and,

uh, naming doesn't realize this.

319

:

And it gives him the, the, the

treasure gives him the reward in hand.

320

:

Uh, when he gets back, Elijah confronts

him and says, Hey, you know what?

321

:

Nayman's leprosy is now your leprosy

and your descendants leprosy.

322

:

And so Suffers for his error there.

323

:

Yeah.

324

:

I was wondering if Mahasi was

already showing some, some sport,

325

:

some sort of apostasy, or at

least some signs of weakness when

326

:

he was praying for the servant.

327

:

Uh, The Shulamite sun.

328

:

So Alicia sends How's your head.

329

:

Uh, Gazi tries to pray

and nothing happens.

330

:

And now you have him going

full bore against what God had.

331

:

What, uh, what Elijah told him to do.

332

:

And now you see, okay, clearly this, this

is evidence that he was not a believer.

333

:

He loved money.

334

:

He's more like a Demas

in love with the world.

335

:

He went after the riches and the.

336

:

The stuff that ministry

could potentially supply.

337

:

I like what Elijah says here.

338

:

He says, was it a time to

accept money in garments?

339

:

In other words, there is a time for that.

340

:

It was just not a time for that.

341

:

We're trying to be a

light to the Gentiles.

342

:

This was not meant for us to

profit from this was a time for

343

:

God's glory to be on display.

344

:

Uh, HASI missed it.

345

:

And what a tragic result that was, and

the danger for all of us is to fall

346

:

so much in love with the world, with

the stuff of the world, the money.

347

:

The prestige, the power that we lose

sight of what's ultimately valuable.

348

:

Yeah.

349

:

It's also a good reminder for us as we're

thinking of Angela Stickley right now.

350

:

Uh, because this is such a good

picture of the power of God to save.

351

:

Uh, and so often when we share the gospel

with someone that they are offended much

352

:

like here, you had named a defendant

when he was first told of the solution

353

:

to, to bring about the cure that he had.

354

:

And in his pride stands in the way.

355

:

And yet eventually he humbles

himself and pursues the simplicity

356

:

of Washington, a river at dirty river

at that the Jordan river is not the

357

:

most beautiful river in the world.

358

:

And he, but yet he humbles himself

does that, and that simple act is

359

:

what brings about his cleansing.

360

:

And it's just a good reminder to us

when we're sharing the gospel with

361

:

someone, their initial offense,

uh, need not shock us that that's.

362

:

That's the natural response of

the flesh being told, Hey, you're

363

:

a sinner and you need salvation.

364

:

Uh, and yet we can trust in God to bring

about salvation through the humility that

365

:

we see represented here in, uh, in Naman.

366

:

I was, was named and saved.

367

:

Are we suggesting that we don't know?

368

:

I, there's nothing hard to know for sure.

369

:

To pinpoint for sure.

370

:

Moving forward, but it's possible.

371

:

It's a positive response, at

least it is that for sure.

372

:

For sure.

373

:

All right.

374

:

Chapter six, then chapter six, we get

more confirmation here of a ministry.

375

:

Remember Alicia is taking over.

376

:

Uh, for, uh, Taking over for, um, Elijah.

377

:

And so Elijah having

been such a power player.

378

:

Uh, there are things that we read

here that we're looking at kind of

379

:

going, okay, why this story about

the floating ax head and what we have

380

:

to remember is this is written to

people that are, are, are right there.

381

:

Seeing all this things, these things

take place, but this is also written to

382

:

us too, to understand Elijah's power.

383

:

Remember when Alicia succeeded.

384

:

Uh, Elijah, he had asked for that double

portion of, of the spirit, he had asked

385

:

that God's spirit would empower him.

386

:

And certainly we're seeing confirmation

at that through things like the

387

:

opening scene here, where the accent

falls into the water in Alicia comes

388

:

along and makes the accent float so

that they can have their accent back.

389

:

This is nothing spiritually

momentous or, or anything.

390

:

That's like, oh man,

that's, that's so good.

391

:

And if the accident hadn't come up,

then Israel would have collapsed.

392

:

It's not that at all.

393

:

But it's God reminding us of

Elisha's giftedness and power there.

394

:

Should we expect this today?

395

:

Uh, no, no.

396

:

that's like the, the, the

sign gives the healings.

397

:

The miracle powers.

398

:

Uh, we don't stand up on Sunday morning

and say, Hey, listen to us because look

399

:

what we can do to validate our message.

400

:

We're standing up.

401

:

Holding out a message

that's been validated.

402

:

We're standing up holding up

the message of the word of God.

403

:

And that's what, uh, what

people trusting great point.

404

:

Yep.

405

:

Uh, then verses eight through

15, you've got the Syrian king.

406

:

Now he's frustrated that Alicia could

anticipate his moves in strategy.

407

:

And so he sends and surrounds

the city in which the prophet is

408

:

residing in order to kill him.

409

:

He's like, okay,

something's going on here?

410

:

We got to take out this Alicia

guy because he's frustrating.

411

:

My plans here.

412

:

But in verses 16 through 23, the

Lord ends up delivering Alicia

413

:

according to Alessia's prayers.

414

:

Uh, and which were not noticed for

the destruction of those who had

415

:

come to destroy him, but that they

might be rendered temporarily blind.

416

:

And then it's a funny scene because Alicia

then goes and leads them right into the

417

:

lion's den right into the heart of some

area where they did not want to be because

418

:

they were in a vulnerable situation there.

419

:

And then you've got, uh, the

Israelite king who says, okay, great.

420

:

I get to now take them out.

421

:

I get to now kill him.

422

:

And Alicia says, uh, no, that's

not what we're going to do.

423

:

Why don't you feed them?

424

:

And then we're going to let them go.

425

:

This was kind of, Hey,

we've humiliated them.

426

:

We've embarrassed them.

427

:

They recognize the power

of the God that we serve.

428

:

We're going to let them go with their way.

429

:

Interesting.

430

:

In verse 23 where it says, and

they did not send any more raids

431

:

against Israel, but then did you

notice verse 24 right after that?

432

:

Yeah.

433

:

Cause then the army is there

coming back against Israel.

434

:

So there was a period of time

where they weren't being set.

435

:

So there were some kind of peace.

436

:

And I think one of the things I took away

was that being loving toward enemies.

437

:

Has has some kind of.

438

:

Practical value there and

that disarm them for a season.

439

:

You know, it's what the Proverbs

that you you're, you're shoveling,

440

:

shoveling hot coals on their head.

441

:

And if some kind of judgment or some

kind of effect taking place there,

442

:

but I think that's worth us looking

at today, loving our enemies and.

443

:

So for some of us, just, just the

other side of the political aisle.

444

:

For those who vote differently than we do.

445

:

I mean, it's, that's, that's powerful

right now, loving your enemies, having

446

:

them at the dinner table, as you

were just suggesting is a big way to

447

:

showcase that we love as we have been

loved and not the way necessarily that.

448

:

They're loving us.

449

:

Yeah.

450

:

Yeah, it also read that, that it

wasn't necessarily a rating party

451

:

that comes back and first 24,

but this is an all out attack.

452

:

Yeah.

453

:

And so there's some differences there.

454

:

These aren't little skirmishes, those

stopped, but here comes the whole

455

:

army against Israel at that point.

456

:

Yeah.

457

:

It's possible, but yeah, I

think both are valid there.

458

:

Uh, well, the, the rest of the chapter

here, um, Jehoram is angry and swears an

459

:

oath against Alicia and seems to hold him

responsible for the current circumstances.

460

:

And as I was reading through this

MacArthur suggested some reasons for this.

461

:

As to why MacArthur in his whole

Bible commentary that he's got there.

462

:

Uh, he suggested number one, either

king J saw this as from the Lord

463

:

and Elijah was the Lord's prophet.

464

:

So he connected that and said, well,

that's why I'm angry at Alicia.

465

:

Or another reason.

466

:

Number two is that king J knew

Alicia had brought in or Elijah

467

:

rather had brought an end to famine.

468

:

Previously in his ministry and

concluded that a light HSA should

469

:

be able to do this as well.

470

:

And so, because they were in this

famine period and it was ongoing,

471

:

he concluded, man, Elijah could

stop this if you really want it to.

472

:

And yet he's not.

473

:

Uh, third reason that he suggested

as possible is that king J

474

:

was angry that Elijah hadn't

let him kill the rating party.

475

:

That he was thinking, man, if I had

dispatched them and slaughter them

476

:

all, then the fear would be in them

and they wouldn't be back here on our

477

:

doorstep now and in besieging us so

that we have this, this great famine.

478

:

And then finally, uh, MacArthur suggested

he was frustrated that his morning, uh,

479

:

the King's morning, which he identifies.

480

:

And I agree with him as false repentance.

481

:

Hadn't brought an end to the famine.

482

:

And so he's angry at the Lord.

483

:

And again, angry, the Wood's

representative being Alicia here,

484

:

that God is not responding the way

that, uh, that he feels like he

485

:

should, because he thinks that he's

repenting here in this situation.

486

:

Yeah, it is interesting because you don't

really have anything in the text that

487

:

tells you this is exactly why he's upset.

488

:

I just saw this as a blame shifting,

like, this is really your fault.

489

:

Your leadership is what's provoking

this kind of response that God

490

:

promised you, this is what he said.

491

:

You should know this.

492

:

And yet, whatever reason

he's upset, it's not valid.

493

:

It's not a good one.

494

:

Ultimately, when we're looking.

495

:

You know, we're looking to others too.

496

:

To be the responsibility,

uh, for our struggle.

497

:

That's often us.

498

:

It's not them.

499

:

Yeah.

500

:

Yeah.

501

:

Yeah, chapter seven then, uh, Alicia,

as the, the feminist is still taking

502

:

place in the city is still besieged by

the, uh, the Syrian army at this point.

503

:

Alicia prophesies that the famine

is going to come to an end.

504

:

And even he says by the next day, and he

uses some numbers here to suggest that

505

:

in, in the numbers, aren't, aren't our

numbers here as far as the monetary units.

506

:

But no, this basically you're saying.

507

:

The bread's going to become

super cheap by the next day.

508

:

So we're in a time of heavy

inflation ourselves right now.

509

:

And so imagine this is like

them saying, Hey, tomorrow

510

:

morning, you're gonna wake up.

511

:

And gas is going to be

a buck 10, a gallon.

512

:

Bring it.

513

:

Yeah.

514

:

I think I would take it.

515

:

Come on.

516

:

You prophesying right now, man.

517

:

I'm about to say amen to this.

518

:

Um, you just said we're not, we should

not expect the signs and wonders.

519

:

And yet here you are.

520

:

I'm not, I'm not saying I'm not a prophet.

521

:

Nor the son of a prophet,

but, but, but it'd be great.

522

:

Nope, but then there's, there's

one who protests in any protests,

523

:

because this is something that

is going to be an act of God.

524

:

And just like we would say, there's

no way we're going to wake up tomorrow

525

:

morning and have gas be a dollar 10.

526

:

He saying, there's no way we're

going to wake up tomorrow.

527

:

And this family is going to be broken.

528

:

What, what evidence do you have?

529

:

We're outnumbered.

530

:

We've got this massive army, one of

the most powerful armies of the day.

531

:

Uh, surrounding our city, uh, people

are eating their own children here.

532

:

Like what.

533

:

What's going to change.

534

:

How is this possible?

535

:

And the prophet Elijah says,

look, this is going to happen.

536

:

You're going to see it, but

you're not going to eat of it.

537

:

And that's what happens in the rest of it.

538

:

The chapter, the Lord does end the

famine and he does it by a miraculous

539

:

routing of the Syrian army this year,

an army hears the sound of great forces

540

:

coming against them and they, they

turn tail and they run, they flee.

541

:

And it's a comical scene

because there's these lepers.

542

:

That are hanging out outside

the city gate going well.

543

:

Where are you going to lose?

544

:

Yeah, let's go.

545

:

And they go out there

and discover an empty.

546

:

And they fill themselves

for a little bit there.

547

:

And then the lady.

548

:

We should tell the people.

549

:

And so they go back and there's

this mad rush out the gate.

550

:

And this captain who had protested.

551

:

Alicia, he ends up dying in the rush.

552

:

I thought immediately of black Friday

and Walmart's same sorts of places.

553

:

People that get run over and stampeded.

554

:

But what a terrible way to die.

555

:

Could you imagine that?

556

:

You're just being stepped

on by repeated people.

557

:

Yeah, because people are just so.

558

:

shall we say about the good deals?

559

:

Well, desperate.

560

:

I mean, think about it.

561

:

I alluded to it in, and it's,

it's not necessarily PG parents,

562

:

but you have the situation where

the two mothers had that debate.

563

:

Yeah.

564

:

Because one had made a promise about what

they would do with their kids and right.

565

:

Like.

566

:

So now all of a sudden it's like

there's food out there, free food.

567

:

And so you have people that have been

in that position now, all of a sudden

568

:

here's the food is right outside the gate.

569

:

Yeah.

570

:

This is dire it's urgent.

571

:

Yeah, it's not like we want

to get our hands on the newest

572

:

toy for our kids for Christmas.

573

:

This is like, we mean survival.

574

:

Uh, and so it's going to be

cutthroat to do whatever they can

575

:

to get there bigger than tickle me.

576

:

Elmo is what you're saying.

577

:

Hi, to remember that.

578

:

How crazy that was.

579

:

Yes.

580

:

Yes.

581

:

Thankfully I did not

have kids at that time.

582

:

I don't believe.

583

:

And so I was not concerned about.

584

:

Probably the wing.

585

:

Getting that tickle me Elmo.

586

:

I don't think, I think

I was older than that.

587

:

I think.

588

:

Again, you were the one getting.

589

:

Listen.

590

:

Dude in it.

591

:

Uh, elementary school.

592

:

My friend had the dragon dagger from.

593

:

The power Rangers.

594

:

Okay.

595

:

Dragon dagger was that really cool thing.

596

:

They went, dude, dude, dude.

597

:

Okay.

598

:

And it would bring out the, I forget

the guy they dragons or to whatever.

599

:

Yeah.

600

:

He was the only one in my entire friend.

601

:

I had hundreds of friends

that were not friends.

602

:

People.

603

:

I knew hundreds of friends right here.

604

:

Oh, that wasn't that hot.

605

:

Trust me.

606

:

I had hundreds, only guy I

knew that had this device.

607

:

It was super cool.

608

:

He didn't get stampeded

for, to my knowledge.

609

:

I never got into power Rangers.

610

:

I think we've had that conversation.

611

:

We have.

612

:

And I'm disappointed by that.

613

:

I'm a ninja turtles guy.

614

:

I wasn't at that too.

615

:

They can both play and cooperate.

616

:

Yeah, there should have been a crossover.

617

:

I don't know why there wasn't.

618

:

A mashup.

619

:

Yeah.

620

:

It would've been interesting.

621

:

Alright, second Kings chapter eight.

622

:

Uh, since chapter eight, verses one

through six, we come back to the

623

:

shoot and I shoot him by his family.

624

:

Elijah had a soft spot in

his heart for this family.

625

:

He stayed with them when he was traveling.

626

:

He obviously.

627

:

Uh, made the promise that they would

have a son that had the son, the son

628

:

died, he raised the son back to life.

629

:

So he cares for this family and he had

told them, Hey, look, the famine's coming.

630

:

You need to take off.

631

:

You need to get out of

here, which they do.

632

:

But then they come back after the

famine ends and the Lord provides for

633

:

them to be able to get their land back.

634

:

And so just to kind of a brief note there,

again, this is an interesting glimpse into

635

:

the personal life of the prophet here.

636

:

This is not moving the ball

down the field, as far as the

637

:

narrative of what God's doing in

Israel in any way, shape or form.

638

:

This is just a glimpse into

this personal relationship.

639

:

I think that Elijah had with his

family, which is kind of cool.

640

:

Is the servant.

641

:

cause the servant here is.

642

:

Is shown there.

643

:

They're demonstrated, but there's no name.

644

:

So is this Kasi.

645

:

And this is something happening, happening

in the past, or is this in the future?

646

:

And.

647

:

off the scene and this

is a different survey.

648

:

I got to imagine.

649

:

He's off the scene.

650

:

I don't think Alicia has taken a

leprous servant around with him.

651

:

I mean practically.

652

:

Well, I mean, it would

have to be another servant.

653

:

I'm suggesting so right.

654

:

I think there's different opinions

about whether or not this is Ghazi.

655

:

And this is an out of sequence event,

just told for the sake of filling

656

:

out some of the content about yeah.

657

:

Elisha is.

658

:

Uh, Elijah's care for this shit.

659

:

I might.

660

:

I ended up family.

661

:

Yeah.

662

:

So, I dunno.

663

:

I guess that's the short answer.

664

:

I don't know if it is or isn't.

665

:

it does seem to be a flashback

because he's saying the Lord has

666

:

called for a famine and the famous,

we just read where the phobia.

667

:

Um, you know, it does seem to be at

least a little bit of a flashback,

668

:

so maybe it is still get hot.

669

:

It depends on how far back am

I talking about verse four.

670

:

It says God has his name right there.

671

:

Mike King was talking with

Yeah, that makes sense.

672

:

Doesn't it.

673

:

See, we should pay attention to stuff like

that, but, uh, neither of us got that.

674

:

Aye.

675

:

I T it actually that's at my.

676

:

I don't know why.

677

:

Well, some of my Bible

too, I have verse 14.

678

:

I'm not saying it's

not it's in our Bibles.

679

:

My my notes.

680

:

You made a note about.

681

:

Gotcha.

682

:

And I now am looking at

it saying why didn't I?

683

:

Okay.

684

:

So yes, it's a HASI it was a

flashback that has to be in that.

685

:

That's that's that's the case right there.

686

:

Yeah.

687

:

Yeah.

688

:

Alright, verses seven through 15.

689

:

Then we get introduced to this guy.

690

:

Uh, Hazael.

691

:

Uh, and Hazael comes on the scene and he

is a, he's not part of the Royal family.

692

:

And yet he is going to be.

693

:

Eventually the king and.

694

:

That's going to come up about in a

little bit of a nefarious way because,

695

:

uh, Elijah goes to the, to mask us here

where Ben, Hey, dad was sick and the

696

:

king sins Hazael to inquire of Alicia

as to whether or not he would recover.

697

:

So when Alicia sees this guy coming.

698

:

He gets this prophetic vision

of him as the king of Syria.

699

:

Now, Ben Haight at is currently the

king of Syria, but Elijah gets a

700

:

vision of him as the king of Syria.

701

:

And this vision includes a lot of

violence that he's going to do to the

702

:

people of Israel, such that Elijah

is moved to, to mourn over this.

703

:

And he tells.

704

:

Uh, how's all of this vision that

he would be king in place of.

705

:

Hey dad.

706

:

And so then when Hazael returns.

707

:

Uh, to the palace, to the king,

he goes back to Ben Hayden, and

708

:

he has a murdering the king and

takes the throne for himself there.

709

:

He acts on that pretty quickly.

710

:

He does.

711

:

If he wasn't thinking about it already,

it seems really interesting that he'd

712

:

go back and act upon this prophecy.

713

:

So, so fast.

714

:

Yeah.

715

:

Which.

716

:

Maybe he was thinking about it, maybe

just the power of Elijah's words.

717

:

It's so interesting that the

dynamic between Alicia and Syria.

718

:

Because Syria is not the people

of God series a, I play a role.

719

:

Uh, another nation altogether.

720

:

So.

721

:

Uh, yeah, unique there for sure.

722

:

Verses 16 through 24, then king

Joran reigns in Judah here where

723

:

we're brought back to Judah for a

minute, the Southern kingdom, and

724

:

he's going to rain for eight years.

725

:

And we've seen some of this already.

726

:

There's some overlap, flashing back and

forth between our reading and Chronicles.

727

:

Um, and, and here in Kings, at least

the only thing super noteworthy for

728

:

the recorder of Kings is the, the,

uh, breakup of the relationship

729

:

between Israel and the EDA match.

730

:

Remember the Edomites

Esau, Esau, and Jacob.

731

:

Uh, the, the close relationship, it was

a familial relationship there while the

732

:

Edomites are going to revolt from Judas

rule established, uh, establishing their

733

:

own king in the process that takes place

under germs reign in verses 16 through 24.

734

:

That's right.

735

:

Verse 25 through 29.

736

:

Then as the chapter draws to a close and

today's reading draws to a close you've

737

:

got anxie who follows Joran as king.

738

:

And he also follows him in doing what

was evil in the sight of the Lord.

739

:

And so he and the king of Israel

go to battle together against

740

:

Hazael and the king of Syria.

741

:

And so this is, uh, a situation

again that we will pick up on more

742

:

in that we'll see some overlap

between Chronicles and Kings here.

743

:

Hey, has I?

744

:

His mom is at the . Don't forget that.

745

:

Not a good, that's a good lady.

746

:

The factor because she's, she plays a

pretty prominent role for her wickedness.

747

:

She does.

748

:

And in her connection to

the Davidic line, Right.

749

:

And we've already seen some of her

from our reading and Chronicles.

750

:

So we'll pick up more of her.

751

:

I think tomorrow's

reading of the next days.

752

:

And I think tomorrow's reading soon.

753

:

Fair enough.

754

:

Yep.

755

:

Well, there you go.

756

:

We're back.

757

:

There's another episode of

the daily Bible podcast.

758

:

Things are, as they should be.

759

:

We will catch you guys tomorrow.

760

:

Bring your Bibles and tune in

again tomorrow for another episode.

761

:

second Kings bio, but.
