2
:the personal side of business
and the art of standing out.
3
:Here I'll help you build a business
and a brand that is uniquely you.
4
:If you want to attract dream
clients and stop looking at the
5
:competition to decide your next move.
6
:to show up as a confident
branding authority to help you
7
:serve your clients and consider
your goals and priorities too.
8
:If you want to make your mark in a
new, underserved niche of photography,
9
:then this is the place for you.
10
:I'm your host Maddie Pachon, South
Dakota brand photographer and educator.
11
:I'm a straight shooting, Instagram
obsessed, and Instagramer.
12
:Diehard Swifty who has built a multi
six figure business on the back of brand
13
:photography all while raising a family.
14
:And I know you can do the same.
15
:Let's get ready to take it personally.
16
:Wireless Microphone RX-1: This
episode is part of my quiz series,
17
:where I tell you all about the four
archetypes of brand photographers.
18
:You can go to Maddie Dot com slash quiz.
19
:And take the, are you ready to
be a brand photographer quiz?
20
:And then I will tell you what your
brand photographer archetype is.
21
:Wireless Microphone RX: The first type of
brand photographer is also the most rare.
22
:Most of the time when I hear from
people who are wanting to get into
23
:brand photography, they already have a
successful wedding or portrait business.
24
:They've been shooting for a while.
25
:They're familiar with their camera, but
once in a while, I get people who are just
26
:starting to pursue being a photographer.
27
:Maybe they've picked up a
camera a handful of times.
28
:Maybe they haven't even purchased their
first camera yet, but they just know.
29
:That they want to pursue
photography as a business.
30
:This is what I call, not very creatively,
the brand new photographer, right.
31
:They are brand new to
photography as a business.
32
:And I love these photographers
because they know what they want.
33
:And let me tell you that was the opposite.
34
:Of me, I, while I am very thankful
for the path that has led me here, I
35
:think it would have been probably a lot
easier and a lot straighter of the line.
36
:If I would've just known right away
that I was interested in personal brand
37
:photography or even like what that was.
38
:I had no idea what that was.
39
:So I love the brand new brand photographer
because they know what they want and now
40
:they just need a clear path to get there.
41
:So characteristics of the brand new
brand photographer, they are likely still
42
:working on getting it right in camera.
43
:I can really relate to this.
44
:I remember sitting in my
college photography class.
45
:Thinking that there was no way
I was ever going to be able to
46
:control my ISO and shutter speed
and aperture and white balance.
47
:Like all at the same time.
48
:I just thought there's no way that
I'm ever going to be able to do
49
:this, but practice makes perfect.
50
:And the more that you get your camera
in your hands and play with it, the
51
:better that you're going to get.
52
:My biggest piece of advice.
53
:If you are the brand new brand
photographer, don't be afraid to
54
:do some portfolio building shoots
for free as you build your skills.
55
:I know that photographers love to get
really sassy and Facebook groups about
56
:photographers who are shooting for free.
57
:And I don't want you to shoot
for free forever by any means.
58
:But there is a time and a place for it.
59
:And when you are brand new, when
you're starting out, when you're
60
:honing your skills, that is exactly.
61
:What you should be doing.
62
:So don't be afraid to do some of
those portfolio building shoots
63
:for free, and then you can slowly
raise your price as your skills get
64
:better and as you get more confident.
65
:It's also really common as the brand
new brand photographer for your clients
66
:to be mostly friends and family.
67
:When your business is a little bit
more hobby than it is a business.
68
:As of right now.
69
:Um, and even as it grows and you start
charging people, Your friends and
70
:family can be really fantastic clients.
71
:This is how so many
photographers start out.
72
:And it's a really good place
to be in because you have
73
:this like built in network.
74
:So you can use the networks
that you already have.
75
:To spread the news that you're
interested in photography and
76
:watch those networks grow.
77
:And as your skills grow and
you increase your prices.
78
:Also, I want you to know that it's
normal for some of these people to fall
79
:away, to make room for new clients.
80
:It is normal to get to a point
where your friends and family
81
:might not pay your prices.
82
:And I think that this is a point
that so many photographers get
83
:to and they kind of freak out.
84
:Like they think if their friends
and family aren't going to pay the
85
:price, then the price is too high.
86
:That's actually not the case at all.
87
:It just means that your business is
entering a new stage, a new era, but
88
:for right now, enjoy the support and
celebrate the wins that you get by
89
:booking with your friends and family.
90
:They're also going to be really
great clients to learn on.
91
:You can ask them for genuine feedback.
92
:You can use their photos
to build your portfolio.
93
:It's a really great place to start.
94
:Now I actually do not recommend that
the brand new photographer come in to
95
:rebrand it, at least not quite yet.
96
:However I do recommend that the brand
new photographer look at my new program
97
:that is launching on black Friday.
98
:Which is called rewind and rewind
is going to tell you exactly how
99
:to shoot your first brand session.
100
:For the brand new photographer, you
really want to be working on your
101
:skills first, and then we can work more
on the business on marketing, on your
102
:personal brand to get to a point where
you can charge those higher prices
103
:and become a six figure photographer.
104
:But for right now, I want
you to work on your skills.
105
:I want you to get really comfortable
with a camera before you move on to
106
:step 2, 3, 4, all of the other steps.
107
:If you are a brand new photographer
and you are listening to this,
108
:I would love to hear from you.
109
:You really are at such an
exciting point in your career.
