Before we begin, Simon and I would like to acknowledge that we're recording this on the unceded land of the Rondjeri Woi Wurrung people of the Kulin nations.
Ryan Hamilton:We'd also like to acknowledge that we met and grew up together on the land of the Combemari people of the Yugamba language group.
Ryan Hamilton:And we'd like to acknowledge and pay our respects to Kulin and Yugambeh elders, past and present, and extend that respect to any first nations listeners.
Simran Pasricha:Always was, always will be aboriginal land.
Simran Pasricha:Welcome back to Broadly Relevant.
Ryan Hamilton:I'm Ryan Hamilton.
Simran Pasricha:And I'm Simran Pasricha.
Ryan Hamilton:And this is the podcast for burnt out divas trying to stay broadly relevant.
Simran Pasricha:Hey, Ryan, what was the favorite part of your weekend?
Ryan Hamilton:Oh, my God, it was such a crazy weekend.
Ryan Hamilton:Like three brunches, two shows, two parties.
Simran Pasricha:What was your favorite part?
Ryan Hamilton:You know, like, I did see an adaptation of Macbeth done by four naked clowns called Lady Macbreast.
Ryan Hamilton:That was fun.
Ryan Hamilton:And I went to a Diwali party, too.
Ryan Hamilton:No, at yours, which I think actually definitely ranks up there as, like, number one.
Simran Pasricha:It better.
Simran Pasricha:Oh, my goodness.
Ryan Hamilton:What was your best party ever?
Simran Pasricha:Get a dead man over me.
Simran Pasricha:Come on.
Simran Pasricha:It was my Diwali party.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, it was a great.
Simran Pasricha:It was going to sleep after my Diwali party.
Simran Pasricha:It was like, such a deep sleep.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Broadly culture.
Ryan Hamilton:Well, I think it's been a massive cultural week this week.
Simran Pasricha:No, absolutely.
Simran Pasricha: Grammy nominations are in for: Ryan Hamilton:No.
Ryan Hamilton:And kind of crazy.
Simran Pasricha:Do you want to take us through it?
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Well, okay.
Ryan Hamilton:So Beyonce got the most nominations for Cowboy Carter with 11 nominations, period, but only three in the major categories.
Ryan Hamilton:Kendrick Lamar, Billie Eilish, Charlie XCX and Post Malone all earned seven nominations, which is more than Taylor Swift, Sabrina Carpenter, and Chapel Roan, who each got six nominations, which is kind of crazy.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, that is kind of crazy.
Simran Pasricha:Post Malone got in, though, with Taylor Swift.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, that's true.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:And it's very exciting for Queen Bey because she is now officially the most nominated Grammy.
Simran Pasricha:Like, most nominated Grammy artist in her life.
Simran Pasricha:In her life.
Ryan Hamilton:In, like, everyone's life.
Simran Pasricha:In everyone's life with 99 nominations.
Simran Pasricha:And she used to be tied with her husband jay Z at 88.
Simran Pasricha:So now she's taken the reins.
Ryan Hamilton:Well, good for her.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Will she win the coveted award?
Simran Pasricha:Who knows?
Ryan Hamilton:I don't think so.
Simran Pasricha:I hope that everybody thanks her in her speech, their speeches.
Ryan Hamilton:Okay, well, do you want to know who's up for album of the year?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, please.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:So there's like 10 albums.
Ryan Hamilton:Taylor Swift's Tortured Poets Department, Chapel Roan's the Rise and Fall of a Midwest Princess.
Ryan Hamilton:Very good to see that there.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Billie Eilish's Hit Me Hard and Soft Slay.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Jacob Collier, Jessie Volume 4.
Simran Pasricha:Totally.
Ryan Hamilton:Charlie XCX Brad.
Ryan Hamilton: once, Cowboy Carter and Andre: Ryan Hamilton:New blue sun.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha: And Andre: Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:I read a single article about it when it came out.
Ryan Hamilton:Didn't listen, but I read an article period.
Simran Pasricha:There was really very much like that study vibe, classical music vibe.
Simran Pasricha:But yeah, it's nice to see that the pop girlies are and.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, very well.
Ryan Hamilton:It's been a massive year for pop.
Simran Pasricha:Absolutely.
Simran Pasricha:And thank God for it.
Ryan Hamilton:But like.
Ryan Hamilton:Because like, aoty is like the big award.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Do you see Cowboy Carter winning out of those ones?
Simran Pasricha:Ooh, I don't know.
Ryan Hamilton:I don't.
Simran Pasricha:I don't think so, unfortunately.
Simran Pasricha:And I don't know if it'll be her country album.
Simran Pasricha:Is that not diabolical?
Simran Pasricha:Like, it's her country album tonight.
Ryan Hamilton:You know, it should have been Lemonade or Beyonce.
Simran Pasricha:It should have been Lemonade.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:That's my favorite album.
Simran Pasricha:Random snubs though from the Grammy nominations is Ariana Grande.
Simran Pasricha:She did get three.
Simran Pasricha:She did get three nominations, but she didn't get any in the major categories.
Simran Pasricha:Also Jack Antonoff, he wasn't nominated for anything and he produced like everything.
Simran Pasricha:Everything.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:He is the producer for Taylor Swift and also produced a track on Sabrina Carpenter's new album and produced the stuff for Lion Del Rey.
Simran Pasricha:So that was interesting because he be winning but he's had a three year winning streak so it was time.
Simran Pasricha:I.
Simran Pasricha:And I'm excited because Dan Nigro is nominated for an award and he is a producer of the other side of Pop Girlies.
Simran Pasricha:So like Chapel Roan and Olivia Rowe.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Simran Pasricha:The other snub was Megan Thee, Stallion.
Simran Pasricha:Her album like wasn't like nominated at all even though, like it was all over TikTok and Jung.
Simran Pasricha:Huh?
Ryan Hamilton:Was it?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, I would say.
Ryan Hamilton:I don't know.
Ryan Hamilton:She had a new album, it's on.
Simran Pasricha:My side of TikTok.
Simran Pasricha:And then Jungkook was another one who he's from BTS and he debuted his first solo album and he didn't get any nominations but he like got like a lot of like different like records that he broke.
Ryan Hamilton:Well.
Ryan Hamilton:And Kat's eye got snubbed, period.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:What the fuck is up with that, guys?
Simran Pasricha:Best new artist.
Simran Pasricha:Where Was she?
Simran Pasricha:Where were they?
Ryan Hamilton:Well, the best new artists.
Ryan Hamilton:Do you wanna hear them?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, let's.
Ryan Hamilton:So we got Benson Boone.
Simran Pasricha:Okay.
Ryan Hamilton:You know him?
Ryan Hamilton:He's the one who does, like, cartwheels at, like, Taylor Swift concerts.
Simran Pasricha:I don't know who that is.
Ryan Hamilton:Okay.
Ryan Hamilton:He's on my TikTok.
Simran Pasricha:Totally.
Ryan Hamilton:Sabrina Carpenter.
Ryan Hamilton:And I'm like, is she new?
Simran Pasricha:Well, that was like, the big you hoopla of can she be nominated?
Ryan Hamilton:And I guess she can.
Simran Pasricha:Guess she can.
Simran Pasricha:Dochi Kerungbin Ray, which we love.
Simran Pasricha:Chapel, Rhone Shabuzae and Teddy Swims.
Simran Pasricha:Teddi Swims is a country star, right?
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:I think Shabuza is also country star.
Simran Pasricha:Oh, true.
Simran Pasricha:Ray is like, the most beautiful performer and singer.
Simran Pasricha:And she's also nominated for Best Songwriter of the Year.
Ryan Hamilton:Good.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:I think it'll be between Chapel and Sabrina.
Ryan Hamilton:Well, of course.
Ryan Hamilton:But it's like, it's gotta be Chapel.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, I hope so.
Ryan Hamilton:It's gotta be Chapel.
Simran Pasricha:It's like, maybe Queer Friends.
Ryan Hamilton:It's gotta be Chapel.
Ryan Hamilton:Also, best record and best song.
Ryan Hamilton:Some interesting ones there.
Ryan Hamilton:I didn't know the Beatles put out a record.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, but they're nominated for best record with now and Then.
Simran Pasricha:It's so interesting because it's actually.
Ryan Hamilton:Well, they're, like, dead.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:It's an AI assisted track.
Ryan Hamilton:That's crazy.
Simran Pasricha:It is crazy.
Simran Pasricha:And it's.
Simran Pasricha:I think that's so wild.
Ryan Hamilton:But, like, otherwise, the records for the year are, like, the records of the year, I would say, you know, Texas hold'em, espresso, 360 birds of a Feather.
Ryan Hamilton:Not like Us.
Ryan Hamilton:Not Like Us.
Ryan Hamilton:That was a song.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Drake must be screaming, good luck, babe.
Ryan Hamilton:And Fortnite.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, that all makes sense.
Ryan Hamilton:And it's like.
Ryan Hamilton:That's a solid playlist right there.
Simran Pasricha:Totally.
Simran Pasricha:I don't know if Fortnite should be on there.
Simran Pasricha:Is that crazy of me to say?
Ryan Hamilton:Well, I don't know if TTPD should be there.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, that's me.
Simran Pasricha:That's also a crazy thing for us to say.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, we said it.
Ryan Hamilton:Don't Hate Us Song of the year.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:A bar song.
Ryan Hamilton:Tipsy.
Ryan Hamilton:Do you know that one?
Ryan Hamilton:No, no, no.
Ryan Hamilton:Another Tips of Whipsy.
Ryan Hamilton:You know that one?
Ryan Hamilton:It's like, country.
Simran Pasricha:I'm okay.
Simran Pasricha:Not.
Simran Pasricha:That's okay.
Ryan Hamilton:It's like a bar song.
Simran Pasricha:Okay.
Simran Pasricha:Where you get tipsy, too.
Ryan Hamilton:I, like, listened to it once on TikTok, and TikTok was like, yeah, this is, like, the number one song.
Ryan Hamilton:And I was like, I've never heard this in my life.
Simran Pasricha:Totally.
Ryan Hamilton:Birds of A feather die with a smile from Lady Gaga, which is fun for her.
Ryan Hamilton:Fortnite.
Ryan Hamilton:Good luck, babe.
Ryan Hamilton:Not like us.
Ryan Hamilton:Please, please, please.
Ryan Hamilton:And Texas hold em.
Simran Pasricha:Are there any that you were surprised that weren't on there?
Simran Pasricha:Like songs or anything like that?
Ryan Hamilton:I mean, like 360 being like the brat song.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Not 365.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, yeah.
Simran Pasricha:You know, that's like, actually taken me.
Ryan Hamilton:Out of the way and it's like, why not Apple?
Ryan Hamilton:You know, like, why not?
Simran Pasricha:So I, you know, why not, girl so confused.
Ryan Hamilton:Why.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Simran Pasricha:With Lorde.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:As a pop duo.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Wild.
Simran Pasricha:But interesting news though that I found out was that after the Grammy nominations came out, some a little tea was spilled on the Internet that Chapel Verne actually left her management company.
Ryan Hamilton:Why?
Simran Pasricha:Well, there's no, like, real reason that's like, out there, but I think it's very interesting that she left, like, right after, you know, the Grammy nominations came out, basically.
Simran Pasricha:So it was, like, reported by Billboard that Rowan had split with the management group State of the Art and her manager, Nick Bobetsky.
Simran Pasricha:And it was confirmed when State of the Art posted a congratulatory Instagram post to all of their Grammy nominees.
Simran Pasricha:And that didn't include the mention of Chapel Roan.
Simran Pasricha:And there were like, rumors back in October and the rumors came, like, right after she made the remarks about the presidential election and also her last minute cancellation of the All Things Go festivals.
Simran Pasricha:When she said, things have gotten overwhelming over the past few weeks and I'm really feeling it.
Simran Pasricha:I feel pressure to prioritize a lot of things right now and I need a few days to prioritize my health.
Simran Pasricha:And this was reported by Rolling Stone, but I think it'll be, like, interesting.
Simran Pasricha:I think it's because, like, maybe her management just isn't supporting her in the way that she needs to be supported.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:I mean, that's not surprising.
Simran Pasricha:No.
Simran Pasricha:And like, thank God that she's left, you know?
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:And like, hopefully come back to Australia.
Simran Pasricha:No, absolutely.
Simran Pasricha:And maybe sing in box again.
Simran Pasricha:That would be so great.
Simran Pasricha:But yeah, that's all on Grammys.
Ryan Hamilton:Well, also, Apple did get a nom for best pop solo performance, period.
Simran Pasricha:As she should.
Ryan Hamilton:And then there was best pop duo group performance.
Ryan Hamilton:Charlie got nominated, but not with Lorde.
Ryan Hamilton:With Billy for guests.
Simran Pasricha:Yes.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Which, like, yeah, fair enough.
Ryan Hamilton:But like, in other news, did you see the Paul Mescal lookalike contest in Dublin the other.
Simran Pasricha:I sure did.
Ryan Hamilton:It was so hilarious.
Simran Pasricha:Lookalikes are everywhere these days.
Ryan Hamilton:And I was like, I massively support this.
Ryan Hamilton:And then there was, like, one of the contestants who was, like, being interviewed, and I was like, that is Paul Mezcal.
Ryan Hamilton:Like, that is Paul Mescal.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:And then he.
Ryan Hamilton:The interviewer was just like.
Ryan Hamilton:And like, what would you say about this?
Ryan Hamilton:Like, how are you feeling?
Ryan Hamilton:And he was like, well, it's a good day for the parish.
Simran Pasricha:I was like, totally bad.
Ryan Hamilton:I was like, yes, it's a good.
Simran Pasricha:Day for the parish.
Simran Pasricha:But okay, maybe there was one guy that looked like him because the rest of them did not.
Simran Pasricha:They just turned up in short shorts and called it a day.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, yeah.
Simran Pasricha:There was also a Harry Styles lookalike contest in London and it was like, all about, like, bringing up the vibes of London, basically.
Ryan Hamilton:Did Harry show up?
Simran Pasricha:No, he didn't show up.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, well, Paul.
Ryan Hamilton:Because Paul showed up to the.
Ryan Hamilton:Paul Mercy.
Simran Pasricha:He actually didn't.
Ryan Hamilton:He didn't?
Simran Pasricha:No.
Simran Pasricha:That was a separate clip of him going somewhere else.
Ryan Hamilton:I have been misinformed.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:I've been duped.
Simran Pasricha:Ye.
Simran Pasricha:No, I was also duped, but he wasn't there.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, that's crazy.
Simran Pasricha:He was in Dublin, but he wasn't.
Ryan Hamilton:Just separately talking to someone who looked like him.
Simran Pasricha:And then someone, like, heard someone told him about, like, the contest and he was like, oh, blah, blah.
Simran Pasricha:But I think it's time that we have a lookalike contest in Australia.
Ryan Hamilton:In Melbourne.
Simran Pasricha:In Melbourne.
Ryan Hamilton:In Carlton.
Simran Pasricha:In Carlton, Sure.
Ryan Hamilton:A Troye Sivan lookalike contest.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:I mean, we need a white boy of the month too.
Simran Pasricha:Okay.
Ryan Hamilton:No, and because it's like, I think it's time.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, absolutely.
Ryan Hamilton:Because if we wait more than, like, three weeks, like, the.
Simran Pasricha:The buzz will drop.
Ryan Hamilton:The buzz will Dr.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:So Troye Sivan lookalike contest.
Simran Pasricha:Okay.
Simran Pasricha:Down.
Simran Pasricha:Well, IMC came on the 21st, so I feel like around that time is a good time to do it.
Ryan Hamilton:And I think we should organize something.
Simran Pasricha:Okay.
Simran Pasricha:If we get one, like, on this post, we'll organize the Troy Savannah lookalike contest.
Ryan Hamilton:And stay tuned.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Watch the space.
Ryan Hamilton:Have you seen Wicked?
Simran Pasricha:No, I haven't, but I'm very excited too.
Ryan Hamilton:Did it come out?
Simran Pasricha:It's not out yet.
Simran Pasricha:It's not out.
Ryan Hamilton:Okay.
Ryan Hamilton:Can we go together?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:I'm so sorry, but I'm actually going to the Melbourne screening.
Simran Pasricha:I'm going as a plus one.
Simran Pasricha:Sorry I weaseled my way in.
Ryan Hamilton:No.
Ryan Hamilton:And it's so hard being like, I'll.
Simran Pasricha:Go with you again.
Ryan Hamilton:I love, like, us, like, half being important.
Ryan Hamilton:And so, like, it's always like, I'm Going as a plus one.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, yeah.
Simran Pasricha:It's never me being invited, it's me being like, please take me.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, absolutely.
Simran Pasricha:Oh my God.
Simran Pasricha:I love that you're wearing red.
Simran Pasricha:I love that you're wearing green and your hair is pink right now.
Simran Pasricha:They're so Wicked coated.
Ryan Hamilton:So like when everyone says, okay, let's.
Simran Pasricha:Save it for the movie, shall we?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:And so, so it's a sing along, isn't it?
Simran Pasricha:Do not sing in the cinema.
Simran Pasricha:This is a PSA for everyone that's going to Wicked.
Simran Pasricha:This is not your time to sing along.
Ryan Hamilton:I think I've like actually seen Wicked on the West End.
Ryan Hamilton:So like I am trained.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Qualified.
Simran Pasricha:You've done your time, you have your requirements, you know.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, but look, I am all for singing along and like community is so important, but like, maybe in the first week or so, like maybe we don't sing along in the cinemas, you know, is that mean?
Simran Pasricha:Do you think I'm gonna be canceled?
Ryan Hamilton:I don't know.
Ryan Hamilton:I feel like, you know, wasn't it fun singing along to the ERAS tour?
Simran Pasricha:No, it was so much fun.
Simran Pasricha:But that was a legitimate concert.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, but like Wicked is like, you know, basically also that.
Simran Pasricha:But do you sing along in a musical?
Ryan Hamilton:No.
Ryan Hamilton:Cause I'm going to new musicals and I don't know the words.
Simran Pasricha:Totally going to indie musicals.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Okay, well, you know what, actually do what you want.
Ryan Hamilton:Would you get any merch from the show?
Ryan Hamilton:Like are you like Barbie obsessed or just like, how much obsessed?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, I'd get merch from the show, but maybe not this one.
Simran Pasricha:That's going around because Mattel just had a massive misprint on the boxes for its new Wicked dolls.
Simran Pasricha:It's outrageous actually.
Ryan Hamilton:Mattel of Barbie fame.
Simran Pasricha:Mattel of Barbie fame.
Simran Pasricha:And they have a bunch of other toys too.
Simran Pasricha:I think they have hot heels.
Simran Pasricha:But according to some customers, on November 10, the toy company behind Barbie and Hot Wheels accidentally printed the address of an adult film website on the boxes for its line of new Wicked dolls.
Simran Pasricha:And this is like, it has like Ariana as Galinda and Cynthia as name.
Simran Pasricha:Oh my God.
Simran Pasricha:Elphaba as Elphaba.
Simran Pasricha:And so like this is like not good.
Simran Pasricha:Like you can see their likeness in the dolls.
Simran Pasricha:But the misprint was.
Simran Pasricha:It was supposed to be Wicked movie dot com, but instead it was just like wicked dot com.
Simran Pasricha:And so everyone was like, oh my goodness.
Simran Pasricha:But this is a massive oversight.
Simran Pasricha:Like you have.
Simran Pasricha:It's a multi million dollar company, assumably.
Simran Pasricha:I actually have no facts on this, but it's Giving that shortly.
Simran Pasricha:Barbie Multimillion.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:No, that's crazy.
Simran Pasricha:No.
Simran Pasricha:Oh, it's so crazy.
Simran Pasricha:Okay.
Simran Pasricha:Ryan is on the website.
Ryan Hamilton:No, but like, they're literally capitalizing on it.
Ryan Hamilton:They are capitalizing pink and green stuff.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Period.
Ryan Hamilton:Good for them.
Simran Pasricha:Good for them.
Simran Pasricha:I guess.
Simran Pasricha:But that is so funny.
Simran Pasricha:Like, that is so diabolical also just, I don't know, read the fine print, I guess.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:I also like, you know.
Ryan Hamilton:Cause like, you know, corporate, there's so many meetings and approvals and it's like, how does that get through?
Simran Pasricha:This was like that time and who was it?
Simran Pasricha:I think it was like Balenciaga and they got kicked.
Simran Pasricha:Canceled because of.
Ryan Hamilton:That was crazy.
Simran Pasricha:Shoot.
Ryan Hamilton:And it had those children's toys and also sex toys.
Simran Pasricha:Yes.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Simran Pasricha:And like the newspaper clippings were like child photography things.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:It was like related to like Epstein or something.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:And it was like satanic.
Simran Pasricha:I don't know.
Ryan Hamilton:It was crazy.
Simran Pasricha:It was so crazy.
Simran Pasricha:But that's like another one where it was like, why, like, I thought corporations.
Ryan Hamilton:Were scared of doing anything.
Simran Pasricha:Exactly.
Simran Pasricha:Let's instill that fear again, shall we?
Ryan Hamilton:Bring back fear.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Speaking of make America scared again.
Simran Pasricha:And that he did that.
Simran Pasricha:He did.
Ryan Hamilton:Broadly news.
Simran Pasricha:That was a real data news.
Simran Pasricha:And it's.
Ryan Hamilton:Cause, well, you know, like.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:The election, it's like crazy.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:But they like, kind of like they haven't, you know, technically finished counting, you know, technically.
Ryan Hamilton:Like, we probably won't even know until like the Vice President certifies the results early January.
Simran Pasricha:No, totally.
Ryan Hamilton:Like anything could happen.
Simran Pasricha:Could happen.
Simran Pasricha:Please.
Simran Pasricha:Anything.
Ryan Hamilton:My fear is anything could happen.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:So Trump won.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:And it's.
Simran Pasricha:It's obviously a very scary time, not only in America, but in the world.
Ryan Hamilton:Well, because Australia has an election next year.
Simran Pasricha:Yes.
Simran Pasricha:And we're already seeing a lot of people feel like this is permission to continue with their very conservative and very right wing and extreme views.
Simran Pasricha:Even like, just like last week, a hospital in Orange in New South Wales, they stopped abortions for any reason without, like a medical reason.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:And then like they walked it back the New South Wales, like health minister, like walked it back, like immediately.
Simran Pasricha:And they were like, what?
Simran Pasricha:They like, can't do that.
Simran Pasricha:So then they walked it back.
Simran Pasricha:But there were like rumors in the hospital that ABC reported that they were like, basically like trying to like tighten the screws on abortions being happened, like happening in that hospital.
Ryan Hamilton:That is crazy.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Isn't it crazy?
Ryan Hamilton:And like Nazis are marching all over Australia.
Simran Pasricha:Absolutely.
Ryan Hamilton:Rural places.
Simran Pasricha:Yes.
Simran Pasricha:And in Queensland And Adelaide.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:There's a lot of different abortion talks, so.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, obviously, very knuckered vibes.
Ryan Hamilton:No, it's like, bring back the good vibes, guys.
Ryan Hamilton:Like, where's Brat Summer gone?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:No more Trump winter.
Simran Pasricha:Okay.
Ryan Hamilton:You know, like, I wanted to be.
Ryan Hamilton:I wanted to lib out so hard.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Let it go, Lib.
Ryan Hamilton:Have you read the articles about that?
Simran Pasricha:No.
Ryan Hamilton:Living out.
Simran Pasricha:No.
Ryan Hamilton:Well, it's like, you know how you can, like, queen out or, like, diva out?
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:You can, like, live out.
Simran Pasricha:Totally.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:It's like, where you're like, yeah, Kamala was gonna save the world.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:But, like.
Ryan Hamilton:Okay, so, like, what were the biggest gags of the election for you?
Simran Pasricha:Ooh.
Simran Pasricha:I think a lot of the celebrities that have now just been, like, outing themselves as Trump supporters with their silence and with their nonsense, you know, it.
Ryan Hamilton:Was, like, crazy because, like, Trump won.
Ryan Hamilton:And then, like, within, like, 30 minutes, like, the CEOs of every tech company in, like, Silicon Valley like, immediately posted tweets being like, congratulation.
Ryan Hamilton:We can't wait to work with you.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:I'm like, yeah, play the game.
Ryan Hamilton:Don't hate the player.
Simran Pasricha:Literally even, you know, prime ministers.
Ryan Hamilton:Macron immediately was like, cannot wait to work with.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:And, like, Albert was like, yeah, bestie.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, we're great friends, but, yeah.
Simran Pasricha:The celebs that added themselves include Nicole Scherzinger.
Simran Pasricha:I was like, girl, what are you doing?
Simran Pasricha:She recently commented on a post from Russell Brand, first red flag, which is insane.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:He is most known for being Katy Perry's ex husband.
Simran Pasricha:And he.
Simran Pasricha:That's how I shall refer to him.
Simran Pasricha:Not this man making me side with Katy Perry right now.
Simran Pasricha:But he.
Ryan Hamilton:It's a woman's world.
Simran Pasricha:It's a woman's world.
Simran Pasricha:But he is also currently facing, like, sexual assault allegations.
Simran Pasricha:But he posted a pic of himself that said with a hat that said, make Jesus first again.
Simran Pasricha:And that's obviously, like, you know, it's like a play on a MAGA slogan.
Simran Pasricha:And Nicole loved it so much that she commented, where do I get this hat?
Simran Pasricha:And then people started noticing, and then she deleted her comment.
Simran Pasricha:She did, like, post a apology, but not anywhere.
Simran Pasricha:Did she say, like, anything about her stance.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, exactly.
Ryan Hamilton:She was just like, sorry, you know?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Period.
Simran Pasricha:She's like, oh, I.
Simran Pasricha:Sorry.
Simran Pasricha:I hurt people, but I basically voted for this.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:But the production of Sunset Boulevard, she's in on Broadway.
Ryan Hamilton:I really want to see that separately.
Ryan Hamilton:It looks like a really interesting production.
Simran Pasricha:No, it really does.
Simran Pasricha:Like, what if she wasn't in it?
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, cut her.
Simran Pasricha:Put Katy Ferry in.
Simran Pasricha:But other people, obviously, Azalea Banks, she was like, don't vote for Trump.
Simran Pasricha:And then two seconds, she's like, lmao.
Simran Pasricha:I lied.
Simran Pasricha:I voted for Trump yesterday.
Ryan Hamilton:And did you see the entire cast of SNL came out, like, pro Trump?
Simran Pasricha:Yes.
Simran Pasricha:Obviously very sarcastic.
Ryan Hamilton:I hope it was so funny.
Ryan Hamilton:It was our cold open, and they were like, yeah, Trump won.
Ryan Hamilton:And, you know, we've supported you the whole way.
Ryan Hamilton:We stand with Trump.
Ryan Hamilton:We stand with you and we love you.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:And I was like, I love.
Ryan Hamilton:No.
Ryan Hamilton:Cause, like, why do I love SNL now?
Simran Pasricha:No, same.
Simran Pasricha:Except I didn't love Bill Burr on snl.
Simran Pasricha:Why the fuck would they have them?
Simran Pasricha:Like, he's a comedian, I guess, but he.
Simran Pasricha:In his opening monologue or I don't know which monologue he did it in, but he joked about women candidates going O and 2 against Trump.
Simran Pasricha:You know, that obviously, like, alludes to Hillary Clinton and Kamala and then joke.
Simran Pasricha:And then he, like, jokingly pointed out how female candidates need to, like, learn from the defeat.
Simran Pasricha:So he said.
Simran Pasricha:So let's get into the game.
Simran Pasricha:Tape.
Simran Pasricha:All right, ladies, enough with the pantsuits, okay?
Simran Pasricha:It's not working.
Simran Pasricha:Stop trying to have respect for yourselves.
Simran Pasricha:You don't win the office on policy.
Simran Pasricha:You gotta hoard up a little bit.
Simran Pasricha:I'm not saying go full hooters, but find a happy medium between Applebee's and your dad didn't stick around.
Simran Pasricha:Why am I actually, like, wanting to throw up from that?
Simran Pasricha:That is disgusting.
Simran Pasricha:And literally the week after the most horrible thing happened and Trump got elected, like, this is not it.
Simran Pasricha:I didn't even care if he was, like, trying to be sarcastic about it.
Simran Pasricha:It just wasn't the goal.
Simran Pasricha:The sarcasm worked with the SNL cast that, like, said the whole thing about, like, you know, supporting Trump, but this is disgusting.
Simran Pasricha:It's too soon.
Simran Pasricha:I don't care.
Simran Pasricha:I don't really care what the rhetoric was or, like, what the point of it was.
Simran Pasricha:It was a fucked thing to say.
Ryan Hamilton:Well, and the whole phrase that, like, all the, like, the alt right people are saying on Twitter, like, your body, my choice.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, like, that's crazy.
Simran Pasricha:It's scary.
Simran Pasricha:It's real.
Simran Pasricha:And, like, obviously, like, SNL isn't supposed be, like, super serious.
Simran Pasricha:It's literally supposed to be, like, a comedic show.
Simran Pasricha:I don't know.
Simran Pasricha:Say something funny.
Ryan Hamilton:Do you know what is interesting?
Ryan Hamilton:Have you seen all the people on Threads being like, oh, my God, they stole the election.
Ryan Hamilton:And basically having conspiracy theories about election tampering?
Ryan Hamilton:And stuff.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:And on the right.
Simran Pasricha:On the left.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, on the left.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Because the right one obviously just so interesting that the liberals lose.
Ryan Hamilton:Sorry.
Ryan Hamilton:That the Democrats lose and suddenly they're doing the same sort of conspiratorial thinking that the right wing does.
Ryan Hamilton:It was just.
Simran Pasricha:I'm like, okay, it is interesting.
Simran Pasricha:But I have seen a lot of proof, actually, because a lot of it, like when you track like your early ballots.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:They haven't reached.
Simran Pasricha:Or like they haven't.
Simran Pasricha:And you're only allowed to call them after 30 days.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:So, but I'm also like, I guess my thinking is like, if there was genuinely election tampering, I just have a hunch Kamala would say something.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:I think it's too early.
Ryan Hamilton:See something, say something.
Simran Pasricha:Totally.
Simran Pasricha:I hope that someone says something and that it's true and that couple can come into power.
Ryan Hamilton:Anecdotally, while we're talking about like anecdotal misinformation, we're hearing on TikTok.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Okay.
Ryan Hamilton:I saw a divorce lawyer who was like, wow, I've just had like a three times increase in the amount of like, inquiries on like, people like women seeking, like, no fault divorce.
Ryan Hamilton:And for context, November is usually the quietest month for divorces.
Simran Pasricha:Random.
Simran Pasricha:Just because it's.
Simran Pasricha:Because it's before Christmas, I guess.
Ryan Hamilton:I don't know why it's quiet, but like it's abnormally high right now.
Ryan Hamilton:Everyone's getting divorced.
Simran Pasricha:That's very interesting.
Simran Pasricha:I got an email the other day that said that domestic violence cases go up during the holidays, though.
Ryan Hamilton:And also AFL Grand Final.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Anyways, wait, I want to say something about Nara Smith.
Ryan Hamilton:Ok.
Simran Pasricha:So she was recently also added as like a low key Trump supporter because her husband, Lucky Blue Smith, reposted a TikTok video by a conservative activist, Scott Presley.
Simran Pasricha:The post celebrated Trump's campaign's victory in a lawsuit against Bucks county election officials.
Simran Pasricha:And there was like another side that there was another thing on Reddit that said that he also followed Charlie Kirk.
Simran Pasricha:So, like real gross.
Simran Pasricha:Very, very gross vibes.
Simran Pasricha:But, like, it kind of makes sense.
Simran Pasricha:I don't know.
Simran Pasricha:She is a tried wife.
Simran Pasricha:So, like, you know, I don't know.
Simran Pasricha:But yeah.
Simran Pasricha:And some people on Twitter have also screenshotted posts of showing Lucky's username among those who liked a post by Donald Trump.
Simran Pasricha:So, I mean, the proof is in the screenshot.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Shut up.
Simran Pasricha:I needed to say it.
Simran Pasricha:Okay.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, well.
Ryan Hamilton:And like on the topic of screenshots of social media, you know, who, like, Won't be able to use social media soon.
Simran Pasricha:That was a wild segue.
Ryan Hamilton:Yes.
Simran Pasricha:60 to 90.
Ryan Hamilton:The Albanese labor government is pushing forward on its plans to ban under 16s from social media.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, they are, which is crazy, but.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:So essentially the next steps are.
Ryan Hamilton:Because the Liberals have said they support the plan, so it's still sitting weak in Parliament.
Ryan Hamilton:So they're going to get through Parliament and then essentially social media platforms will have a year to comply.
Ryan Hamilton:They've said that they're not going to allow teens who already have social media accounts to, like, keep them.
Ryan Hamilton:So they're going to get kicked off.
Ryan Hamilton:And even if you have parental consent, you're still getting kicked kicked off.
Ryan Hamilton:And it's just like a little crazy because, like, how do you verify everyone's age?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, exactly.
Simran Pasricha:They've not, like, said this.
Simran Pasricha:They say that it's on part of the companies, like the app, the social media platforms themselves, to uphold this.
Simran Pasricha:And I still don't know how they'll be able to do that because, you know, everybody and their mother was, you know, getting Facebook, like, when they weren't supposed to when we were younger.
Simran Pasricha:Right.
Simran Pasricha:And technically the age was like, 16 or like 14.
Ryan Hamilton:Well, yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:And so there's apparently a lot of, like, options on the table, including providing id, which is like an insane and unhinged step.
Ryan Hamilton:Having, like, literally everyone who uses social media in Australia to provide id to use social media.
Ryan Hamilton:Like, I hate that.
Ryan Hamilton:I hate, like, American tech companies just having literally everyone, like, no, everyone's information.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Or biometrics, such as face scanning.
Simran Pasricha:Yikes.
Ryan Hamilton:Like major yikes.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton: to continue their trials into: Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:And then the E Safety, who is Julie Inman Grant, will make recommendations to platforms.
Simran Pasricha:So, yeah, look, the thing is, I don't disagree that social media is, like, bad and can be harmful to teenagers.
Simran Pasricha:Right.
Simran Pasricha:Like, that's a fairly.
Simran Pasricha:It makes sense that it is.
Simran Pasricha:It's a lot of information to take as, like, someone who doesn't have a fully formed brain, you know.
Simran Pasricha:However, this is, I'm going to say, not the greatest way to be going about safeguarding, you know, this.
Ryan Hamilton:No.
Ryan Hamilton:And like, yes, there are dangers on social media, but, like, Instagram's just launched their, like, teen accounts, which is absolutely just coming up because they don't want this policy to go through.
Ryan Hamilton:It's so interesting how they're advertising all over LinkedIn and like, Metro, like, Metro stations.
Ryan Hamilton:I'm like, oh, so you're trying to target the politicians and the parents.
Ryan Hamilton:Well, yeah, but it's just like if you can go to prison at 11 in the northern Territory, you can be on Instagram.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Like I just.
Ryan Hamilton:If the government says it's safe enough for you to be in prison, I think you can be on Instagram.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:And let's look at that.
Simran Pasricha:You know, what about we change the age that you can go to prison for?
Simran Pasricha:Like, that's.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, like, if you want.
Ryan Hamilton:Fine, fine.
Ryan Hamilton:You want to keep.
Ryan Hamilton:Kick everyone off social media under 16, but also let's keep him out of prison.
Ryan Hamilton:Like literally.
Ryan Hamilton:That's insane.
Ryan Hamilton:That is insane.
Ryan Hamilton:The complete disregard for human life from the Albanese government.
Ryan Hamilton:Anywho, fuck labor, period.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:We are an unbiased political source.
Simran Pasricha:No, totally.
Simran Pasricha:I'd like to clarify, we also want to fuck liberal, so.
Simran Pasricha:Because some people will take that as like, we're the other side.
Simran Pasricha:We're not broadly deep.
Simran Pasricha:So last night I had a Diwali party, which was very exciting.
Simran Pasricha:And I was talking to my cousin and we were talking about the podcast, which was very exciting.
Simran Pasricha:And she was like, how do you like, you know, keep up with all of this, you know, and like, have something to talk about every single week and damn, it's a struggle, but sometimes.
Simran Pasricha:And so we were like, oh, you know, what we should talk about is how to stay broadly relevant.
Ryan Hamilton:I feel like someone.
Ryan Hamilton:You have like an upper hand because you're like a professional journalist.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Yes.
Simran Pasricha:I'd like to note that Ryan only calls me a professional journalist.
Simran Pasricha:Only called me a professional journalist for this past three months, even though it's been my profession for the past three years.
Simran Pasricha:But I am a professional journalist and I do have to keep up with things for a living.
Simran Pasricha:So I'm very, you know, I just have to be plugged into things.
Simran Pasricha:But I was chatting to people like, at this party and like how they consume news and consume like knowledge and you know, even just like their hyper fixation of things.
Simran Pasricha:And it was interesting, like the different avenues that they all go through.
Simran Pasricha:And it got me thinking about this substack that I saw on TikTok called research as Leisure Activity.
Simran Pasricha:And I think this is like, interesting because I have to say I don't think that I research as leisure, but I know that you do somewhat.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, a little bit.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Because you actually know like a lot more in depth things that I do.
Simran Pasricha:I would say that I know the.
Ryan Hamilton:Surface level of things, but, like, you've covered the surface.
Simran Pasricha:Yes.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Real hard.
Simran Pasricha:I've covered the surface.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Unless, like, I need to know, like, the deeper level of things, then I'll go into it.
Simran Pasricha:So the substack is called Research as Leisure Activity by Celine Yuen.
Simran Pasricha:And the best thing that she said in it was the idea of research as leisure activity has stayed with me because it seems to describe a kind of intellectual inquiry that comes from idiosyncratic.
Simran Pasricha:Idiosyncratic passion and interest.
Simran Pasricha:It's not about the formal credentials, it's fundamentally about play.
Simran Pasricha:It seems to describe a life where it's just fun to be reading, learning, writing and collaborating on ideas.
Simran Pasricha:And I think that's kind of where the origin of broadly relevant came from.
Simran Pasricha:Because, like, I do a lot of this for work and that's like, fun and all.
Simran Pasricha:But this is like the fun part of research and I think that more people should get into that.
Simran Pasricha:How do you go about staying.
Ryan Hamilton:How do I stay broadly relevant?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Um, well, okay, so like, I you a couple ways, like, I love my threads or like, I've started using Blue sky recently.
Ryan Hamilton:Like gotten really into Twitter in lockdown and also started working a job where like, I had a lot of downtime.
Ryan Hamilton:So I was like, constantly like, gotta do something that I can like quickly tap out of.
Ryan Hamilton:And for me, that was like constantly just reading the news, but not like a doom scrolling way, just like, oh, interesting, interesting.
Ryan Hamilton:Learning the news.
Ryan Hamilton:I feel like the big thing though is that I follow just like a bunch of different writers and stuff.
Simran Pasricha:So.
Ryan Hamilton:So I have this app which like, essentially, like, you can follow blogs in it, like you can follow substacks and like newsletters, YouTubes and stuff.
Ryan Hamilton:And then every time like someone that I like write something, I just read it.
Simran Pasricha:What's that?
Ryan Hamilton:It's called Reader.
Ryan Hamilton:It uses a technology called rss, which is called really Simple Syndication.
Ryan Hamilton:And it's like kind of what Mastodon and Threads and Twitter is like powered by at its base level, but it just lets you like, follow different like, substacks and blogs.
Ryan Hamilton:And so like, you know, there's some blogs that, that I've just like, read for like five years and you just read every article.
Ryan Hamilton:It's also just because, like, I love the idea of newsletters.
Ryan Hamilton:I don't want them in my email inbox, you know.
Ryan Hamilton:That's like, so annoying.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, but yeah, and so like, you know, every day I'll read some news about the technology industry and like this great article by Taylor Lorenz, Meta's threads is overrun with liberal election fraud conspiracies, which we chatted about earlier.
Simran Pasricha:Circle back.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:And So I just, like, you know, make a habit of, like, having breakfast.
Ryan Hamilton:I catch up on my news and, like, have a read of, like, what.
Ryan Hamilton:What the divas are saying.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:And I like it because it's also, like, not algorithmic.
Ryan Hamilton:So it's like, all the blogs and stuff are the blogs I choose, and I see everything from those blogs, you know?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:So it's not like Meta thinks I'm interested.
Ryan Hamilton:It's like, sometimes things are more boring, but it's like, I chose for them to be there.
Ryan Hamilton:And I think you have to, like, go through the boringness of the world to find the interesting bits.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:You know, because, like, when you just, like, just live.
Ryan Hamilton:Live in an algorithm, it's like, you know, where's the independent thought?
Simran Pasricha:Absolutely.
Simran Pasricha:And I think this is where, like, people are always saying, you know, it's obviously not good to just, like, stick your head in the sand when it comes, like, to the news and to, like, just, like, knowledge in general.
Simran Pasricha:But I think this is a really good way of being intentional with the way that you consume news and you consume knowledge.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:And it kind of makes it more fun because I guess, like, before I got into this job, I was.
Simran Pasricha:I was a hyper fixation girly.
Simran Pasricha:And, like, YouTube essays were, like, the way that I really, like.
Ryan Hamilton:I love a YouTube video.
Simran Pasricha:Consuming news and, like, consuming new knowledge and, like, just, like, random, like, facts that you know about things.
Simran Pasricha:And, like, we have a friend who's, like, really into frogs and, you know, and it's nice to know that people have interest in the way that they can, like, fully immerse themselves in, like, research.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:I think, like, the medium doesn't even matter.
Ryan Hamilton:It's just, like, just engage with the world and what people are saying.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Because, like, YouTube counts.
Ryan Hamilton:Podcasts, I don't listen to them for the most part.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Isn't that crazy, y'all?
Ryan Hamilton:But, like, a big supporter of people.
Simran Pasricha:Who listen to podcasts, especially you guys listening right now.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Simran Pasricha:I.
Simran Pasricha:I will say I think there is a sense, like, a.
Simran Pasricha:A little bit of, like, privilege, I guess, when it comes to research as a leisure activity.
Simran Pasricha:Because I guess, like, research begins with a desire to ask and answer questions, thereby contributing to the greater sum of human knowledge and culture.
Simran Pasricha:It also requires commitment to evidence, broadly defined, and requires understanding the history, theory, and practices of the discipline, disciplines.
Simran Pasricha:You, like, of the discipline you work within.
Simran Pasricha:And I feel.
Simran Pasricha:And this is what Celine says in her substack, I feel like there is, like, a sense of, I guess Privilege to do all of those things.
Ryan Hamilton:To have time to research.
Simran Pasricha:To have time to research.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, well.
Ryan Hamilton:And to have time to leisure.
Ryan Hamilton:And also it's like.
Ryan Hamilton:Because, like, sometimes, like, the world is, like, scary and.
Ryan Hamilton:Hang on, where am I going with this?
Ryan Hamilton:Like, to be privileged to be able to learn about the horrors of the world rather than experience them.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, exactly.
Simran Pasricha:So this is all a very, like, privileged take.
Simran Pasricha:But it came out.
Ryan Hamilton:But I also think it is important with privilege to learn about the horrors.
Simran Pasricha:Of the world rather than experience them.
Ryan Hamilton:I think you should.
Ryan Hamilton:And also learn about the joys and the beauties of the world so that we can learn from them and grow from them and emulate them.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:And knowledge is power.
Ryan Hamilton:And I love the Internet.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, absolutely.
Simran Pasricha:And girlies, I have heard of this book club in Melbourne that I kind of want to join.
Simran Pasricha:And instead of a book club, they choose an essay or a subset to kind of, like, dissect.
Simran Pasricha:My old workplace Z feed, they, like, started that, like, a little bit where they used to just like, can we go?
Simran Pasricha:I don't think they have them anymore, but we could start.
Simran Pasricha:I'll call her up and be like, hey, yeah, we could also start a book club where we do the same thing.
Simran Pasricha:Can I copy my boss's idea?
Simran Pasricha:No, she'll be so upset.
Ryan Hamilton:Speaking of, there's a.
Ryan Hamilton:An essay that I.
Ryan Hamilton:I would like to tell you about.
Ryan Hamilton:So it's called a Cyborg manifesto.
Ryan Hamilton: araway, and it was written in: Simran Pasricha:Like 30, like a long time ago.
Ryan Hamilton:Like ancient times.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, but it's essentially this essay where Donna Harway talks about.
Ryan Hamilton:It's called a Cyborg manifesto.
Ryan Hamilton:Science, Technology, and Socialist Feminism in the late 20th century.
Ryan Hamilton:And she talks about a different way of potentially thinking about feminism, but also liberation through the lens of cyborgs.
Ryan Hamilton:So, like, sim, what's a cyborg?
Simran Pasricha:Like, the thing is the movie.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:The thing in the movie where it's like a person and like a machine merged into one, essentially.
Ryan Hamilton:Donna Haraway talks about, like, because we live in these worlds where, like, you know, like, I have retainers in my mouth all the time, that technology in me kind of turns me into a cyborg.
Ryan Hamilton:You know, the way that, like, the world influences and shapes us is kind of like this melding of multiple things.
Ryan Hamilton:Like, we don't exist as, like, a binary.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:Thing.
Ryan Hamilton:We, like, have the world embedded in us in our creation.
Ryan Hamilton:And so we're cyborgs in a sense, particularly with the way Technology works.
Ryan Hamilton:I can't remember something without my phone, but with my phone I'm fine, but I need it as part of who I am.
Ryan Hamilton:But she kind of theorizes about the way that because we are cyborgs and because we are built from all these broken pieces of a broken world, that is exactly what will let us create a better world and destroy the world that exists.
Ryan Hamilton:So she says that the main trouble with cyborgs, of course, is that they are the illegit, legitimate offspring of militarism and patriarchal capitalism, not to mention state socialism.
Ryan Hamilton:But illegitimate offspring are often exceedingly unfaithful to their origins.
Ryan Hamilton:Their fathers, after all, are inessential.
Ryan Hamilton:And so, like, for context, she talks about, like, the way that she is a PhD.
Ryan Hamilton:She has a PhD in biology, and she's an Irish Catholic girl.
Ryan Hamilton:And she talks about the way that.
Ryan Hamilton:The way that she was able to get that PhD at the time that she did was not just possible by women's movements and, like, women's liberation in America, but also by the US national fear against, like, Soviet and investment in science.
Ryan Hamilton:And so because of that fear and because of the Cold War, she was able to, like, get that PhD.
Ryan Hamilton:And so she talks about herself as constituted by partially, the Soviet Union, which is interesting to think about, like, the way that, like, things that exist in opposition to us also create us, you know?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Damn, that is very interesting.
Ryan Hamilton:And so she ends.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah, yeah, yeah, it's crazy.
Ryan Hamilton:And so she ends it by saying that cyborg imagery can suggest a way out of the maze of dualisms in which we have explained our bodies and tools to ourselves.
Ryan Hamilton:It is an imagination of a feminist speaking in tongues to strike fear into the circuits of the super savers of the new right.
Ryan Hamilton:It means both building and destroying machines, identities, categories, relationships, space, stories, though both are bound in the spiral dance.
Ryan Hamilton:I would rather be a cyborg than a goddess.
Simran Pasricha:Ooh.
Ryan Hamilton:And I just think about it all the time, you know, like.
Ryan Hamilton:Like, even when we talk about the way that, like, I've read a lot of criticism of the Democratic campaign and the way that they kind of, like, refuse to really engage with, like, new media and stu and like, it's that sort of, like, engagement of, like, this new way, this new messy and broken world, refusing to engage in it.
Ryan Hamilton:It's like, you're gonna lose.
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:And, like, let's be messy, broken cyborgs, you know, and save the world.
Simran Pasricha:Absolutely.
Simran Pasricha:And I think moral of the story is that you should engage, even if it's messy and broken.
Simran Pasricha:Right?
Ryan Hamilton:Yeah.
Simran Pasricha:Yeah.
Ryan Hamilton:It's hard and difficult, but, like, that's how we save the world.
Simran Pasricha:Absolutely.
Simran Pasricha:And especially at this time of the world, at this state of the world.
Simran Pasricha:Please stay Broadly Relevant with us.
Ryan Hamilton:Y.
Ryan Hamilton:Should we check out?
Simran Pasricha:Yeah, let's do it.
Ryan Hamilton:Okay.
Ryan Hamilton:I have one question for you.
Simran Pasricha:Yes?
Ryan Hamilton:What's, like, one viral TikTok thing that you want to buy?
Simran Pasricha:I want to buy this thing called Fish Foods.
Simran Pasricha:It's like this vegan alternative to fish.
Simran Pasricha:Not vegan.
Simran Pasricha:I don't know why I want to buy it, but they were recently on Shark Tank.
Simran Pasricha:And I also have been following Alex Traeger for a while.
Simran Pasricha:She was on Tasty like by buzzfeed, and she's dating this girl called Zoya, and it's Zoya's company.
Simran Pasricha:And I think, like, maybe Alex is also involved in it.
Simran Pasricha:But it looks so yummy and they put it on sushi and I want it now.
Simran Pasricha:And it comes in a little bag.
Simran Pasricha:And it kind of looked gross, actually, but I wanted to.
Ryan Hamilton:It looks like pickled ginger in a bag.
Simran Pasricha:Totally yum.
Simran Pasricha:What do you want to buy?
Ryan Hamilton:A Robo Vacuum?
