“The Labyrinth”, a poem by Sky McKinnon

Speaker:

In the middle of a city is a cage.

Speaker:

You aren't thrown in,

Speaker:

you're born without being issued habeus corpus,

Speaker:

without being read your rights.

Speaker:

You're a monster. You know that

Speaker:

because that's what they call you.

Speaker:

That's what's written on the wall.

Speaker:

It's written in your blood.

Speaker:

When you grow so big that the bars can't hold you any more, you think you're free

Speaker:

but there are walls everywhere.

Speaker:

Your life is made up of cells

Speaker:

from the crib in your mom's apartment

Speaker:

to the brick red radio crooning and

Speaker:

slices of the galaxy.

Speaker:

Even your body is made up of little prison blocks,

Speaker:

little beasts putting in hard time

Speaker:

to get you out of bed in the morning.

Speaker:

You get up and walk with your right hand

Speaker:

on the wall, you should be getting somewhere

Speaker:

but you keep circling steel giants

Speaker:

and only their mirrors can hold the big blue sky.

Speaker:

This planet has a hold on you.

Speaker:

Gravity keeps pulling you in

Speaker:

and you hope it's for a loving embrace.

Speaker:

Mother nature loves her monsters.

Speaker:

She's got a picture of a minotaur inside her purse.

Speaker:

She's got a picture of you.

Speaker:

And even though she tells you to be good,

Speaker:

she knows a hero

Speaker:

will knock on your door,

Speaker:

and she prays for you to break his bones.
