What do you want?

You may think, “Success!” But what does success really mean? Have you ever sat down and thought about what you want? What would your dreams be if you didn't have social media, marketing, or even family trying to influence your dreams?

Here at The Mentee Podcast, we understand that you must fit into society. But equally important is being true to yourself. In this episode, I talk about a speech I gave to a class entering high school. Whether you're a teenager graduating from school or an adult working a day job, everyone is in a state of transition — and the lessons are timeless.

Here are some power takeaways from today’s conversation:

  • Know who you are.
  • Identify what you want for yourself.
  • Your ego protects you, but it’s just as vital to be your true self without ego.
  • Don’t listen to the drunk monkey!
  • Define your future with intentionality.

Episode Highlights:

[05:58] The Good Life

Wyatt recommends that you ask yourself: Are you happy? Do you like yourself? Understanding your identity is something you need to have a deep relationship with; we're bombarded daily by noise, marketing, social media, and clickbait that try to influence what we want.

The good life is what you want it to be — the critical element is that you choose. Success is what you want, so when you get what you want, then you're successful. Therefore, it's critical to identify and clarify what you want.

[09:07] What Do You Know?

It’s not about working hard; think hard and get clear on your future self. The world is so broad; see more of it, and the more experiences you have, the more choices you have. Once you know what you want, choose your relationships with intention.

Find people who are successful, and get in a relationship with them. By interacting with them, you slowly become like them.

[12:41] Create Your Environment

You don't decide your future, but you choose the behaviors and habits that define your future. Part of that is your environment. If you control your environment, you can control your future.

However, some people settle into environments that others create for them. Some, like children, have no choice. School systems can help reshape children's environments to guide them to success. As adults, you can create your preferred environment with intentional action.

[20:04] The Drunk Monkey

Everyone has a drunk monkey on your shoulder that tells you that you aren't good enough. It's a trick. The negative thoughts you have come from that drunk monkey.

When you feel shame, your ego protects you from it. It can protect your true self and help you fit in, but your true self is who you should be. You can't always be your true self, but it's essential to know when to be true to yourself and when to live from your ego.

Approach your life with intention, and you can create the future you want.
