Transcripts

Vytautas Zygas:

Hi, I'm Vytautas Zygas, and you're watching

2

:

Monarchist Basketball Show.

3

:

Mike: The following presentation

is brought to you by The Pride of

4

:

ODU, the official NIL collective

of Old Dominion Athletics.

5

:

Be a Monarchist.

6

:

Join The Pride.

7

:

. Aaron: Monarch Nation, welcome back

to the Monarchist Basketball Show.

8

:

Sean, thanks for joining us, man.

9

:

Sean Durugordon: Thank you for having me.

10

:

Aaron: Alright, so on behalf

of all Old Dominion fans,

11

:

welcome to ODU and to Norfolk.

12

:

Alright, so before transferring

to ODU, you started your career at

13

:

Austin Peay and Siena, where your

production took leaps each year.

14

:

Last season, you had major

impact, averaging 18 points.

15

:

seven boards and well over

83 percent from the line.

16

:

How did those experiences

prepare you for success at O.

17

:

D.

18

:

U.

19

:

And help lead this team?

20

:

Sean Durugordon: Yeah.

21

:

Um, you know, definitely last

season, you know, I definitely

22

:

came into myself a little bit more.

23

:

You know, I wasn't illegible till a

little bit later on in the season.

24

:

But, um, you know, when I was , I

came in and I was ready to go.

25

:

Um, and I'm just going to bring kind

of some of the same intensity and the

26

:

physicality and the scoring ability that

I have to this year's, uh, Moody's team.

27

:

Aaron: All right.

28

:

So

29

:

your play style, like how you

played at Siena coming into Old

30

:

Dominion here with, with coach Jones

to talk about that a little bit.

31

:

Sean Durugordon: Yeah.

32

:

Um, you know, what coach Jones, when

he was recruited me here, he kind

33

:

of painted me a vision of how he

wanted ODU men's basketball to look.

34

:

And, you know, with it being a new

staff and a new team, I felt like it

35

:

was really best case for me to kind

of just come in and kind of, you know,

36

:

believe in what Coach Jones wanted to do.

37

:

And, um, yeah, I mean,

I'm looking forward.

38

:

I'm looking forward to it.

39

:

Aaron: All right.

40

:

So obviously you had a ton of

different opportunities when you

41

:

decided that you were going to.

42

:

To move on from

43

:

Siena.

44

:

Why Old Dominion?

45

:

Sean Durugordon: Yeah.

46

:

Um, really just my relationship with

the, with the coaching staff here.

47

:

Um, you know, we was talking for

a while, came on my visit here.

48

:

You know, I really liked the campus.

49

:

I really got a family type of atmosphere

from, um, from everybody here.

50

:

And, um, you know, I also

have family out here too.

51

:

So it really all kind of just

worked out in its own way.

52

:

Aaron: Okay.

53

:

So you mentioned family.

54

:

We hear that a lot.

55

:

Was there a.

56

:

You know, particular person on the team

with a staff or someone that just that

57

:

made you feel that way when you came to

58

:

visit?

59

:

Sean Durugordon: Um, I would say it

was more of a collective type of feel.

60

:

You know, when I went out with lunch and

dinner with the staff, I just kind of

61

:

felt it all from everybody there, you

know, that they wanted me to be here

62

:

and that it was gonna look out for me.

63

:

Aaron: All right.

64

:

So this team, a lot of new faces

this season, including you as well.

65

:

Sean Durugordon: Absolutely.

66

:

Aaron: Apart from Hoops, what

is one thing that Old Dominion

67

:

fans should know about you?

68

:

Sean Durugordon: Apart from Hoops,

um, I would definitely say that

69

:

I'm a pretty good gamer, uh,

specifically with Call of Duty.

70

:

Um, and that I also like to

draw sometimes when I'm bored.

71

:

Aaron: Okay, so let's

revisit both of those.

72

:

The first one is Call of Duty.

73

:

Do you play against your teammates, and

if so, who's, who's the best on the team?

74

:

Sean Durugordon: Um, I haven't gotten the

chance to play against them yet because

75

:

we kind of play different, um, game modes.

76

:

But, um, you know, with the new

Call of Duty coming out, well,

77

:

it just came out like last week.

78

:

So I think we're all,

um, getting that game.

79

:

So I'll definitely start to play

with them a little bit more.

80

:

Aaron: Okay.

81

:

You know, multiplayer kind of guy

or just the campaign kind of guy?

82

:

Sean Durugordon: Yeah, I'm

definitely a multiplayer type of guy.

83

:

Aaron: Probably goes into the

whole competitive nature of,

84

:

of everything you like to do.

85

:

Right.

86

:

Sean Durugordon: Yeah.

87

:

Aaron: Okay.

88

:

All right.

89

:

What's the one thing that ODU fans

should know most about this year's squad?

90

:

Sean Durugordon: This year's squad?

91

:

I would say that, um, you know, we

might be a younger team, um, but

92

:

I think we have a lot of talent.

93

:

I think we have one of the most

talented teams in the, uh, Sun Belt.

94

:

And I definitely think we're going

to bring an edge and we're going to

95

:

surprise a lot of people just with our

physicality and really just the scale.

96

:

I feel like this team is just

really skilled and talented.

97

:

Aaron: All right.

98

:

So last year you were asked to do a lot.

99

:

on an individual level.

100

:

Um, what's the biggest difference

you've noticed playing for this staff

101

:

versus a staff at your previous stops?

102

:

Sean Durugordon: I would say this,

this staff here is kind of more like

103

:

they're help like they're helping

me kind of So I've always been a

104

:

score type of guy, you know, just

always trying to score the ball.

105

:

And, you know, this staff here has

just been trying to get me to do other

106

:

things that can, you know, impact the

game than just scoring because a lot

107

:

of people know I can score the ball.

108

:

So this staff here has kind of just

been trying to get me to impact the

109

:

game in a multitude of ways to help my

team win, you know, in case I have a

110

:

game where I'm not scoring too much.

111

:

So.

112

:

I'd say that's the biggest difference.

113

:

Aaron: All right.

114

:

So over the years, we found

out some really interesting

115

:

things about guys on the team.

116

:

Tell us something about one of

your teammates, like a hobby or.

117

:

Hidden talent that most

ODU fans wouldn't know.

118

:

Sean Durugordon: Good question.

119

:

Um, I would say, I would say, um,

120

:

I would say a hidden talent, somebody

on my team, I wouldn't, I mean, I

121

:

wouldn't know if this is necessarily

a, um, like a talent, but I would say

122

:

that, uh, Imo, you know, he gets pretty

passionate about, uh, video games.

123

:

Um, you know, he's always arguing in

like the locker room with everybody, you

124

:

know, when he wins and stuff like that.

125

:

So.

126

:

I mean, I guess that is a talent, but he's

probably just one of the most passionate

127

:

guys I've seen regarding video games.

128

:

Aaron: All right.

129

:

Yeah.

130

:

We've learned interesting

things about Imo over the years.

131

:

One, one about his, uh, sense for fashion.

132

:

The other of, I don't know if you've

had a chance to room with him, but, but

133

:

his, uh, wicked snoring, apparently.

134

:

Yeah.

135

:

So if you room with them on

the road, get the sleep first.

136

:

All right.

137

:

A couple, a couple of fun questions here.

138

:

What's your favorite pregame meal?

139

:

Sean Durugordon: Favorite

140

:

pregame meal?

141

:

I would say probably like chicken rice,

you know, I try to not eat too much

142

:

before a game, but I'll probably keep

it at like chicken rice and vegetables.

143

:

Aaron: Is there a favorite restaurant

that you found here in the 757 yet?

144

:

Sean Durugordon: Uh, I would

definitely say my go to spot here

145

:

is probably American's Best Wings.

146

:

Yeah, I'm definitely a wing guy, so.

147

:

Aaron: Yeah, we are too.

148

:

Alright, so, Two part music question.

149

:

Who's your favorite artist or band?

150

:

And then the second one is

what song are you listening to?

151

:

Like right before you go on the

152

:

court.

153

:

Sean Durugordon: My favorite

artist right now, I would say

154

:

is little TJ from New York.

155

:

Um, pregame song.

156

:

I would probably say it's PSA by Kay

Flock, also an artist from New York.

157

:

Aaron: All right.

158

:

What's your favorite basketball movie?

159

:

Or if you don't really have one, just

a movie that people should check out.

160

:

Sean Durugordon: I'd say my

favorite basketball movie is

161

:

definitely Love N' Basketball.

162

:

Uh, yeah, that's always been

my, you know, favorite, probably

163

:

top five movies in general.

164

:

Aaron: Okay.

165

:

You know, one of the people in

that movie is in this building?

166

:

Sean Durugordon: I do not know.

167

:

Aaron: Yeah.

168

:

Coach Delisha Milton

Jones is in that movie.

169

:

Sean Durugordon: Oh, wow.

170

:

Aaron: And she was on the sparks.

171

:

You have to go back and check it out.

172

:

Sean Durugordon: Yeah, most definitely.

173

:

Why did I know that?

174

:

Aaron: All right.

175

:

So, uh, Mike and I've had the,

uh, the luxury of being able

176

:

to watch you play some witness

your ability to score rebound.

177

:

If you had to pick your favorite

basketball move, what would it

178

:

be?

179

:

Sean Durugordon: Favorite basketball move?

180

:

I would probably say.

181

:

Spin move, spin move, like into a layup.

182

:

Um, that's always kind of been

my go to move since I could

183

:

remember, but definitely that if

I'm trying to score in the paint.

184

:

Okay, so if Monarch nation hasn't

185

:

Aaron: had a chance to watch you

play yet, is there an NBA player

186

:

that you would kind of compare

your game to, to give them an idea?

187

:

Sean Durugordon: I would say, I

would say a mix of Kawhi Leonard

188

:

and DeMar DeRozan, for sure.

189

:

Aaron: That's a pretty good mix.

190

:

Yeah.

191

:

All right, two part question.

192

:

What's your top personal and team goal

for this season and what's it going

193

:

to take for you guys to get there?

194

:

Sean Durugordon: I would say

starting with team goal, you know,

195

:

definitely to win the Sun Belt.

196

:

Um, I felt like that would be, you know,

just a great way for us as a team and

197

:

coach Jones to start, you know, his

tenure here at Old Dominion, but, um.

198

:

Yeah, definitely win the Sun

Belt, make the tournament.

199

:

And I believe that, you know, we're

going to get there by, you know,

200

:

just staying together as a team.

201

:

You know, there's going to be games

where maybe things are not going our way,

202

:

but just dealing with that adversity,

um, and just sticking together.

203

:

Because like I said, we have the

talent and the skill to do it.

204

:

So it's going to come down to that.

205

:

And, um, personal goal of mine,

I would definitely say to, um, to

206

:

definitely, you know, put myself in

position to make an all tournament team.

207

:

after the season, if

not player of the year.

208

:

Um, yeah, I mean, my goal after this

season is obviously to, uh, you know,

209

:

look at my professional opportunities.

210

:

But

211

:

Aaron: all right, so let's

let's expand upon that.

212

:

Obviously, basketball number

one goal, long career play.

213

:

But when the ball stops bouncing, you

have any aspirations post basketball?

214

:

Sean Durugordon: Yeah, I mean, yeah,

like I was just talking with my family

215

:

about this the other day, but I would

see myself getting into business,

216

:

um, somewhere in the tech world.

217

:

Um, I've always been a tech

guy since I was younger.

218

:

So after basketball, I think I would

want to get back into that and just

219

:

explore different careers around in tech.

220

:

Aaron: The great goal.

221

:

Yeah.

222

:

I'm, I'm sure you'll make it there.

223

:

What's your message

224

:

for Monarch Nation?

225

:

Sean Durugordon: A message for

Monarch Nation is, you know,

226

:

it's going to be a great year.

227

:

And, um, I encourage everybody to come

out to every home game and support us.

228

:

Cause we're going to surprise

a lot of people this year.

229

:

Aaron: All right, Sean,

thanks for joining the show.

230

:

Go Monarchs.

231

:

Sean Durugordon: Thank

232

:

you, sir.

233

:

Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha Ha, ha, ha, ha, ha
