Finance podcast and our series right now, which is The

Financial Parables of Your Life. So each week I'm sharing what

likely will be a story you may have heard of already before,

but maybe with a little bit of a twist. Because stories are

easier to remember both in transferring generational tales

from one to the next and also finances as well really

anything. So let's use stories to help us remember those

financial items to keep them more front of mind and make our

So today please join me for our story, The Ant and the

Grasshopper...and the Other Grasshopper. One bright day in

late autumn, a family of ants are bustling about in the warm

sunshine, drying out the grain they had stored up during the

summer when a starving grasshopper, his fiddle under

his arm, came up and humbly begged for a bite to eat.

"What," cried the ants in surprise, "haven't you stored

anything away for the winter? What in the world were you doing

all last summer?" "I didn't have time to store up any food,"

whined the grasshopper. "I was so busy making music that before

I knew it, the summer was gone." The ants shrugged their

shoulders in disgust. "Making music were you," they cried,

"very well now dance!" And they turned their backs on the

grasshopper and went on with their work. Not long after

another grasshopper came strolling by. The ants looked up

and said, "Ah, another dancing grasshopper to beg for a bite of

food!" "Who me?" said the other grasshopper. "Oh no, I am quite

alright. Every morning before I start to play, I put away a few

pieces of food. Don't you ants ever have any fun?"

So there is a balance between working hard and having fun. The

traditional fable promotes working hard but did you know

that most ants die within a few weeks to a few years? What a

waste! You know the ant who lives the longest? The Queen ant

and she doesn't go out for even one piece of food. Now that is

an ant who's both very entrepreneurial and also

understands compound interest. When you're young, saving early

is like putting away a few pieces of food every day in

early spring for the other grasshopper. It really isn't too

much trouble. It's not too inconvenient. And there is

plenty in the way of time and resources for playing. If you

don't have a plan until you're in your 50s or 60s or whatever

it may be, you may very well be in the position of the first
