Prayer 2021 - June 30 - Benefits of Praying in the Spirit pt 2
Scripture For Today:
“Epaphras, who is one of you and a servant of Christ Jesus, sends greetings. He is always wrestling in prayer for you, that you my stand firm in all the will of God, mature and fully assured.”
Benefits of Praying in the Spirit pt 2
We have been studying what the Apostle Paul had to say about the benefits of praying in the Spirit. Today, I want us to look at what he had to say in Ephesians 6:18.
“Praying always with all prayer and supplications IN THE SPIRIT, and watching thereunto with all perseverance and supplication for all saints.”
Notice, Paul did not say one word to the Church at Ephesus about praying in tongues. Not at all. But, he did say something about them praying IN THE SPIRIT.
But yet, we learned yesterday, that Paul told the Church in Corinth that praying in tongues was praying in the Spirit. Remember in 1 Corinthians 14:2, he said,
“…he that speaks in an unknown tongue speaketh not unto men, but unto God. For no man understands him, howbeit, in the Spirit, he speaks mysteries.”
Do you suppose that Paul meant the same thing in Ephesians 6:18 as he did in 1 Corinthians 14:2? I believe he did – or else it would mean he is contradicting himself, which would also mean what he wrote was not the inspired Word of God. Which would mean, if he was wrong in this – we could call into question everything else he said. Which, if we could invalidate what Paul wrote, which is 2/3 of the New Testament, we could also question if ANY of the Bible is wrong!
So, I don’t believe Paul contradicted himself at all. Paul is encouraging the Church at Ephesus to follow the practice of praying and worshipping God in the Spirit, and that includes praying in tongues. Amen!
I want you to notice something else here as well…
Paul is telling us how to pray for the saints – other believers. He said, “Praying always with all prayer and supplication in the Spirit, and watching thereunto with all PERSEVERENCE and SUPPLICATION for all saints.”
We know we are supposed to pray for one another. However, if we see a brother or sister in the Lord who is going through a trial or a tough time, we usually pray something like, “God bless brother so and so.” Or “God bless sister so and so.”
But that falls far, far short of the kind of prayer Paul is telling us is needful. Those cute little prayers will not get the job done. Amen!
There is a way, as Paul outlined, that will be totally effective as we pray for others. That involves, as we have been studying, praying in the Spirit. Whether it is tongues or in our known language. The Spirit of God, the Holy Spirit, knows how to pray for anyone. And he is in us to help us with our prayers, as we studied before in Romans 8:26-27.
