Stephaun Walker:

What's good, fans?

2

:

It's Steph Walker here, and y'all

watching the Monarchist Basketball Show.

3

:

Mike Langston: The following

presentation is brought to you by

4

:

The Pride of ODU, the official NIL

collective of All Dominion Athletics.

5

:

Be a Monarchist.

6

:

Join The Pride.

7

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right, Monarch

Nation, welcome back to the show.

8

:

B, welcome to the podcast.

9

:

Vytautas Zygas: Pleasure to be here.

10

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right.

11

:

On behalf of Old Dominion fans,

welcome to ODU and Norfolk.

12

:

Vytautas Zygas: Thank you.

13

:

Aaron Zielinski: How's

Norfolk treating you so far?

14

:

Vytautas Zygas: So far so good.

15

:

I mean, I've been exploring the

city , so it's quite nice to be here.

16

:

I mean, whole environment

is perfect for me.

17

:

I'm enjoying every minute here.

18

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right, so before

coming to Old Dominion, you started

19

:

for the Lithuanian U16, 17, 18, and 20.

20

:

Teams the past four summers,

how have those experiences

21

:

prepared you for success at ODU?

22

:

Vytautas Zygas: So, I played

in the European Championships.

23

:

I played in the World Cup.

24

:

So, I saw a lot of different things.

25

:

I saw how teams play.

26

:

So, I gained a lot of experience from it.

27

:

And to this team, I bring

some different playoff style.

28

:

I play slower, but I play

more smart basketball.

29

:

So when you combine physical and

athletic team, and you combine

30

:

that more play that based on IQ, I

think we have a great combination.

31

:

Aaron Zielinski: Awesome.

32

:

We'll talk a little bit more about that

in a couple of minutes, but you had a

33

:

lot of opportunities to go other places.

34

:

Why ODU?

35

:

Vytautas Zygas: I mean, they

showed most interest towards me.

36

:

I mean, I talked to Coach

Ryan most of the times.

37

:

I mean, I talked with Coach Mike and

I saw their vision and I liked it.

38

:

I mean, Coach Jones have the

same philosophy that I played

39

:

for other coaches, so I like

that, and that's why I chose ODU.

40

:

Aaron Zielinski: So, the philosophy

that you talk about, that shared

41

:

philosophy between Coach Jones

and some of your previous coaches.

42

:

Give us an example, like what's,

what's a philosophy that Coach

43

:

Jones has that's important to you?

44

:

Vytautas Zygas: I mean, the first thing

that we need to do is the defense.

45

:

Defense is the number one.

46

:

So when I played in Lithuania,

four different coaches, our

47

:

key to victories was defense.

48

:

So Coach Mike tells us that defense, that

defense is going to win some games for us.

49

:

So, I mean, all defenses, uh,

defense styles, um, offensive,

50

:

it's kind of similar that I

was playing in Lithuania, so.

51

:

Aaron Zielinski: Alright, so,

this team has a lot of new faces.

52

:

Including you, you're one of them.

53

:

So apart from hoops, what

should ODU fans know about you?

54

:

Vytautas Zygas: I mean, I

bring a different culture here.

55

:

I'll try to teach my guys some

Lithuanian type, type of things.

56

:

I'm going to introduce them to

Lithuanian food because I love to cook.

57

:

I love to cook.

58

:

So, yeah,

59

:

Aaron Zielinski: all right.

60

:

So I don't want to jump too far ahead,

but you mentioned Lithuanian food.

61

:

Is there a place that you found

here locally that has decent

62

:

Lithuanian food or not yet?

63

:

Vytautas Zygas: Uh, not yet because

when I search Lithuanian food

64

:

right here, they show nothing.

65

:

I mean, there's some in

Chicago, in Philadelphia.

66

:

I mean, obviously I haven't been

there, but I'm going to make sure

67

:

to find one somewhere near close.

68

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right.

69

:

Well, when we talk next

and you, you found it.

70

:

We got to let Monarch Nation know.

71

:

All right.

72

:

So obviously you mentioned you've been

here for a couple of months now, uh,

73

:

European basketball, you know, often

focuses more on team play, fundamentals,

74

:

ball movement, and those sorts of things.

75

:

Um, whereas the United States,

the emphasis that a lot of

76

:

time is on athletic ability.

77

:

So talk to us about that a

little bit and your perspective,

78

:

one, your perspective on.

79

:

Uh, basketball in America before coming

here and now that you're here, talk to

80

:

talk Monarch Nation about those, those

differences and maybe some similarities.

81

:

Vytautas Zygas: Well, at first, when

my family told us, told me that there's

82

:

opportunity to come to the USA for

the first time, I was scared because

83

:

they play a lot of one on one offense.

84

:

They play, not a team basketball that

I was afraid of, afraid of, but as

85

:

more I search, as more I watch NCAA.

86

:

So I saw that teams are playing more,

uh, team basketball, not a one-on-one.

87

:

So as time moved on I decided

maybe it's time to go to USA

88

:

and try this type of basketball.

89

:

So when I came here, I saw that

Coach Mike done amazing job

90

:

that there's no I in the team.

91

:

We're playing as a team.

92

:

You're not playing as an individual.

93

:

So that's why.

94

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right, so

Mike and I have been fortunate

95

:

enough to be able to see you

play , and it's really fun to watch.

96

:

You seemingly make the right

play consistently, whether it's

97

:

shooting the ball, making the extra

pass, or getting a tough rebound.

98

:

If you had to pick your

favorite move, what would it be?

99

:

Vytautas Zygas: Tough question.

100

:

I mean, maybe look a step back.

101

:

I mean, I'm not doing as much as I want.

102

:

I mean, you have to.

103

:

See what's the opportunity

when you have to do it.

104

:

But yeah, favorite move

would be look a step back.

105

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right.

106

:

What's been the biggest adjustment for

you having come from Lithuania to Norfolk?

107

:

One, basketball.

108

:

And then two, just personal.

109

:

Vytautas Zygas: Basketball,

I would say intensity.

110

:

Here we, right here we play faster

than I was used to be to play.

111

:

I mean, I play slower basketball.

112

:

So that's an adjustment

that I had to make.

113

:

And in general, maybe the

language, because in Lithuanian,

114

:

we talk only in Lithuanian.

115

:

I mean, yeah, we, we, uh,

studying English also, but we

116

:

not talk as much as we can, so.

117

:

Aaron Zielinski: Well, I think you're

doing a great job there, so whatever

118

:

you've been doing, keep it up.

119

:

All right.

120

:

Is there something that you've

learned about one of your teammates?

121

:

And the time you've been here that

Old Dominion fans wouldn't know.

122

:

Vytautas Zygas: I mean,

Rob is into fashion.

123

:

I mean, the way he

dresses, I like it a lot.

124

:

So I think, yeah, Rob's fashion.

125

:

Cal, Cal likes to fish.

126

:

These two are

127

:

Aaron Zielinski: Good deal.

128

:

All right, let's ask a

couple fun questions here.

129

:

We always like to do it.

130

:

Is there something that you like

to eat or a favorite pregame meal?

131

:

You had before a big game.

132

:

Vytautas Zygas: I mean, when I was in

Lithuania, I ate whatever my mom prepared.

133

:

So it's either was pasta,

rice, or some chicken.

134

:

It doesn't care.

135

:

Aaron Zielinski: Well, the good news is I

think there's probably plenty of all three

136

:

of those here, so it'd be good to go.

137

:

Not mom cooking though, . Yeah.

138

:

Alright.

139

:

Music wise.

140

:

So we ask the guys about

music all the time.

141

:

Um, have you always been a fan of U.

142

:

S.

143

:

music, or is there Lithuanian

music that we have no clue about

144

:

that we should be tuning into?

145

:

Vytautas Zygas: I mean, I've been

listening to all the kinds of music,

146

:

Eminem and Tupac, uh, Gunna, a lot

of different rappers, but pregame,

147

:

I would say some Lithuanian bangers.

148

:

I mean, old bangers, like 90s, early

:

149

:

Aaron Zielinski: Okay.

150

:

Any particular one that if someone

could pull up and say Spotify?

151

:

Vytautas Zygas: Um, I mean, you're

not gonna understand any word, but

152

:

if you search Hiperbolė, it's a

classic, classic band, so I like to.

153

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right, we'll do that.

154

:

All right, in your free time, when

you're not, when you're not hooping.

155

:

You're studying, what do you like to do?

156

:

Vytautas Zygas: I mean, I try to relax.

157

:

Just trying to scout a city.

158

:

I mean, I also love the game.

159

:

I like to play 2K mostly.

160

:

I mean, guys are playing NCA college

football, but it's a new thing for me

161

:

and I haven't, I haven't touched yet.

162

:

Aaron Zielinski: 2K wise.

163

:

Who's the best on the team?

164

:

Vytautas Zygas: I'm gonna see me.

165

:

Okay.

166

:

'cause I've been playing

2K for a long time, almost.

167

:

I haven't played against anybody

because I haven't got a console

168

:

to play, but now I got it.

169

:

So I'm sure I'm going to beat those guys.

170

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right.

171

:

Is there a NBA player that

if you had to describe your

172

:

game, you would be most like?

173

:

Vytautas Zygas: In IQ wise, I

would say Luka or Nikola Jokic.

174

:

On athletic or game based,

I would say Mikhail Bridges.

175

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right.

176

:

Two questions.

177

:

What's your top personal and team goal

for this season and what's it going

178

:

to take for you guys to achieve it?

179

:

Vytautas Zygas: I mean for a team

obviously we want to win a conference.

180

:

I know that it hasn't been a while

that we won So I'm pretty sure that

181

:

we're gonna win this year I mean it

takes a lot of work a lot of dedication

182

:

Trusting each other and in personal.

183

:

I just trying to get better as a

leader Maybe not points or something

184

:

that shows, shows in the statistics,

but more, more like a vocal leader.

185

:

So, try to prepare guys

mentally for battles.

186

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right,

before we close this out, what's

187

:

obviously basketball is on

your mind and you probably have

188

:

aspirations to play professionally.

189

:

But after basketball is done.

190

:

Have you thought about that?

191

:

And if so, what do you want to

do when the ball stops bouncing?

192

:

Vytautas Zygas: Uh, first, I

wanted to be a physiotherapist.

193

:

Also, maybe basketball agent.

194

:

And as move time on, I'm not quite sure.

195

:

But coach is an idea,

196

:

I don't know.

197

:

It's kind of similar.

198

:

Maybe just why not?

199

:

Why not to try it?

200

:

Coach's career.

201

:

Aaron Zielinski: All right.

202

:

Vy, , what's your message

to Monarch Nation?

203

:

Um,

204

:

Vytautas Zygas: I hope you guys,

you guys support us all season long.

205

:

I promise that we're

gonna fight every game.

206

:

We're gonna bring energy to every game.

207

:

And I hope that you're gonna

support us and show that USA fans

208

:

are better than European fans.

209

:

It's a difficult task, but I'm

sure you're gonna ace that.

210

:

Aaron Zielinski: Thanks

for joining the show.

211

:

Go Monarchs!

212

:

Go

213

:

Vytautas Zygas: Monarchs!
