Shownotes

Today we learn more about the 7 celebrations the LORD commanded Israel to maintain. And just as we've seen in each section of Leviticus, these feasts point to Jesus. The first 4 have been fulfilled in Christ already, and the final 3 give us much to hope for! But there's this command to rest that we moms need to figure out! That's why we always end in prayer!!

Speaker:

Welcome to The Dwelling Place

from Entrusted Ministries.

2

:

I'm Stephanie Cocks, and I'm just

a mom that has been transformed

3

:

by the word of God, but I'm

definitely a work in progress.

4

:

That's why I'm so grateful

that as our reading today says,

5

:

our God is the Lord who sanctifies us.

6

:

I need him to be continually changing me.

7

:

Today's reading is on Leviticus

Chapters 20 through 23.

8

:

i'm gonna begin by reading Leviticus

23 regarding these holy festivals.

9

:

Then I'll explain and finally, I'll

pray that the Lord would guide us in how

10

:

we can honor and celebrate him today.

11

:

Chapter 23, begins.

12

:

The Lord spoke to Moses saying,

speak to the people of Israel and

13

:

say to them, these are the appointed

feasts of the Lord that you shall

14

:

proclaim as holy convocations.

15

:

They are my appointed feasts.

16

:

Six days shall work be done, but on

the seventh day is a sabbath of solemn.

17

:

Rest, a holy convocation.

18

:

You shall do no work.

19

:

It is a Sabbath to the Lord

in all your dwelling places.

20

:

These are the appointed feasts of

the Lord, the holy convocations,

21

:

which you shall proclaim at the time

appointed for them in the first month.

22

:

On the 14th day of the month at Twilight

is the Lord's Passover, and on the

23

:

15th day of the same month is the

feast of unloved bread to the Lord.

24

:

For seven days, you

shall eat unloved bread.

25

:

On the first day, you shall

have a holy convocation.

26

:

You shall not do any ordinary work,

but you shall present a food offering

27

:

to the Lord for seven days on the

seventh day is a holy convocation.

28

:

You shall not do any ordinary work.

29

:

And the Lord spoke to Moses saying,

speak to the people of Israel and say

30

:

to them, when you come into the land

that I give you and reap its harvest,

31

:

you shall bring the sheath of the first

fruits of your harvest to the priest.

32

:

And he shall waive the sheath before

the Lord so that you may be accepted.

33

:

On the day after the Sabbath, the

priest shall waive it and on the day

34

:

when you waive the sheath, you shall

offer a male lamb a year old, without

35

:

blemish as a burnt offering to the Lord.

36

:

And the grain offering with it shall

be two tenths of an epha of fine

37

:

flour mixed with oil, a food offering

to the Lord with a pleasing aroma.

38

:

And the drink offering with it shall be

of wine, a fourth of a hin, and you shall

39

:

eat neither bread nor grain, parched

or fresh until this same day, until you

40

:

have brought the offering of your God.

41

:

It is a statute forever.

42

:

Throughout your generations, in all

your dwellings, you shall count seven

43

:

full weeks from the day after the

Sabbath, from the day that you brought

44

:

the sheath of the wave offering.

45

:

You shall count 50 days to the

day after the seventh Sabbath.

46

:

Then you shall present a grain

offering of new grain to the Lord.

47

:

You shall bring from your dwelling

places two loaves of bread to be

48

:

waived, made of two tenths of an epha.

49

:

They shall be a fine flour and

they shall be baked with lemon

50

:

as first fruits to the Lord, and

you shall present with the bread.

51

:

Seven lambs a year old without blemish

and one bull from the herd and two rams.

52

:

They shall be a burnt offering to the

Lord with their grain offering and

53

:

their drink offerings, a food offering

with a pleasing aroma to the Lord.

54

:

And you shall offer one male goat for a

sin offering and two male lambs a year

55

:

old as a sacrifice of peace offerings, and

the priest shall wave them with the bread

56

:

of the first fruits as a wave offering

before the Lord with the two lambs.

57

:

They shall be holy to the Lord

for the priest, and you shall make

58

:

a proclamation on the same day.

59

:

You shall hold a holy convocation.

60

:

You shall not do any ordinary work.

61

:

It is a statute forever in

all your dwelling places

62

:

throughout your generations.

63

:

And when you reap the harvest of your

land, you shall not reap your field

64

:

right up to its edge, nor shall you

gather the gleanings after your harvest.

65

:

You shall leave them for the

poor and for the sojourner.

66

:

I am the Lord your God.

67

:

And the Lord spoke to Moses saying,

speak to the people of Israel,

68

:

saying in the seventh month.

69

:

On the first day of the month, you shall

observe a day of solemn rest, a memorial

70

:

proclaimed with blast of trumpets.

71

:

A holy convocation.

72

:

you shall not do any ordinary work and you

shall present a food offering to the Lord.

73

:

And the Lord spoke to Moses saying

Now on the 10th day of the seventh

74

:

month is the day of atonement.

75

:

It shall be for you a time of holy

convocation and you shall afflict

76

:

yourselves and present a food

offering to the Lord and you shall

77

:

not do any work on that very day.

78

:

For it is a day of atonement

to make atonement for you

79

:

before the Lord your God.

80

:

For whoever is not afflicted on that very

day shall be cut off from his people.

81

:

And whoever does any work on

that very day, that person I will

82

:

destroy from among his people.

83

:

You shall not do any work.

84

:

It is a statute forever.

85

:

Throughout your generations, in all

your dwelling places, it shall be

86

:

to you a sabbath of solemn rest,

and you shall afflict yourselves

87

:

on the seventh day of the month,

beginning at evening, from evening to

88

:

evening, shall you keep your Sabbath.

89

:

And the Lord spoke to Moses saying,

speak to the people of Israel saying On

90

:

the 15th day of the seventh month, and

for seven days is the feast of booths.

91

:

To the Lord on the first day

shall be a holy convocation.

92

:

You shall not do any

ordinary work for seven days.

93

:

You shall present food offerings

to the Lord on the eighth day.

94

:

You shall hold a holy convocation and

present a food offering to the Lord.

95

:

It is a solemn assembly.

96

:

You shall not do any ordinary work.

97

:

These are the appointed feasts of the

Lord, which you shall proclaim as times

98

:

of holy convocation for presenting to

the Lord, food offerings, burnt offerings

99

:

and grain offerings, sacrifices, and

drink offerings each on its proper day.

100

:

Besides the Lord's Sabbaths.

101

:

And besides your gifts and besides all

your vow offerings, and besides all

102

:

your free will offerings which you give

to the Lord on the 15th day of the

103

:

seventh month, when you have gathered

in the produce of the land, you shall

104

:

celebrate The feast of the Lord is seven

days on the first day shall be a solemn

105

:

rest, and on the eighth day shall be a

solemn rest, and you shall take on the

106

:

first day, the fruit of splendid trees.

107

:

Branches of palm trees and bows of leafy

trees and willows of the brook, and you

108

:

shall rejoice before the Lord your God.

109

:

Seven days.

110

:

You shall celebrate it as a feast of

the Lord for seven days in the year.

111

:

It is a statute forever.

112

:

Throughout your generations,

you shall celebrate it.

113

:

In the seventh month, you shall

dwell in booths for seven days.

114

:

All native Israelites shall dwell

in booths that your generations

115

:

may know that I made the people of

Israel dwell in booths when I brought

116

:

them out of the land of Egypt.

117

:

I am the Lord your . God.

118

:

Of these feasts three occur in the spring

during March and April on our calendar.

119

:

First the Passover happens, and

then immediately following is

120

:

the feast of unleavened bread,

which is a week long festival.

121

:

the Passover and the feast of

unleavened bread happened right

122

:

before God led them out of Egypt.

123

:

If they had the blood of the lamb on their

doorpost, the antal of the Lord passed

124

:

over them and their firstborn was spared.

125

:

Jesus was crucified on the Passover.

126

:

He is our Passover lamb, and not only

was Jesus born in Bethlehem, which means

127

:

House of Bread, he revealed himself as

the bread of life, just as Israel was to

128

:

eat the bread without yeast, Christians

are to purge evil from their lives.

129

:

Jesus' death does that for us.

130

:

And then the feast of first fruits occurs.

131

:

This is the first fruit of the

harvest, and it was to show their

132

:

dependence on God for all things.

133

:

One Corinthians 1520 tells us

that Jesus is the first fruits

134

:

of those who have fallen asleep,

and this is the resurrection.

135

:

Today.

136

:

We celebrate this as Easter.

137

:

Pentecost marked the summer harvest

and it occurred 50 days later.

138

:

This was one of the three

times that Jewish men were

139

:

required to be in Jerusalem.

140

:

So in the Book of Acts, that's why

Jewish people of all nations and

141

:

languages were gathered together.

142

:

William h Marty says, regarding

the Pentecost in the New Testament,

143

:

approximately six weeks after his

resurrection and only days after

144

:

his ascension, the exalted Lord

Jesus fulfilled his promise to

145

:

supernaturally empower his disciples

by pouring out the Holy Spirit on them.

146

:

In early Judaism, it was commemorated

as the anniversary of the giving of

147

:

the law in Mount Sinai because it

was thought that God gave the law

148

:

to Israel 50 days after the Exodus

149

:

It is possible that God give

the Holy Spirit on Pentecost

150

:

to contrast with the law.

151

:

The law was an external means of

restraining Israel from sin, but in

152

:

the new era of the church, the Holy

Spirit would provide internal power

153

:

for believers to live righteously and

just as the Lord descended and fire and

154

:

smoke to give the law on Mount Sinai.

155

:

The Holy Spirit descended on the believers

in Jerusalem with tongues of fire,

156

:

Just to review, Jesus was

crucified on the Passover, buried

157

:

on the feast of unloved bread.

158

:

He was raised to life to represent

the feast of first fruits, and he

159

:

sent the Holy Spirit on Pentecost.

160

:

Then there are three fall feasts.

161

:

First is the Feast of Trumpets, and this

happens in September of our calendar.

162

:

Many believe that this is representing

the church age and that the trumpet points

163

:

to the coming rapture of the church.

164

:

The high priest would often blow the

trumpet so that the workers would

165

:

stop harvesting to come worship at

the tabernacle and someday a trumpet

166

:

will sound the next feas is the Day of

Atonement, which we've talked about.

167

:

This was their holiest of days.

168

:

And it will be fulfilled when

Jesus returns at his second coming.

169

:

And finally, the Feast of Tabernacles

was to help Israel remember that

170

:

they used to be travelers living

in tents in the wilderness, but God

171

:

brought them into the Promised land.

172

:

Someday Jesus Christ

will reign on this earth.

173

:

And eventually for all of eternity,

people from every tribe, tongue,

174

:

Tonga Nation will dwell with him.

175

:

With those first four feasts,

we can rejoice at what

176

:

Christ accomplished already.

177

:

But the last three, give us

hope to look for him again.

178

:

Let's pray.

179

:

Heavenly Father, we thank you for

how deeply practical your word is

180

:

as you lay out these prescriptions

for rest and celebration.

181

:

And I'm sure every mom listening is

thinking how different that feels.

182

:

From the celebrations we have today.

183

:

I pray you would give us each wisdom in

how we can honor you in our homes, but

184

:

still teach our children how to rest

because it reveals our trust in you.

185

:

We pray that when you return Jesus.

186

:

That every child being represented by the

moms listening, whether they're yet to be

187

:

born, toddlers, teenagers, or grown men

and women, I pray in Jesus' name that you

188

:

would be drawn each one of them to you,

and I pray that in all of our hearts,

189

:

you would be the reason we celebrate.

190

:

In Jesus' name we pray.

191

:

Amen.
