Darren Hayes: Now, the: Darren Hayes:They had some great players, they had some great coaches, legends of coaching and players to say the least.
Darren Hayes:And they had a great team.
Darren Hayes:Ended up winning the NFL championship.
Darren Hayes:But it really was very similar to another season for the New York Giants.
Darren Hayes:And we'll get to that in just a moment.
Darren Hayes:But first, let's talk about some of the coaches.
Darren Hayes:We've talked about them the last few weeks.
Darren Hayes:We have.
Darren Hayes:Jim Lee Howell was the head coach and his assistants were Vince Lombardi for the offensive coordinator and a gentleman by the name of Tom Landry.
Darren Hayes:As a defensive coach.
Darren Hayes:You can't get much better than that.
Darren Hayes:Now on their roster they had hall of Famers galore, Frank Gifford, Roosevelt Brown, Sam Huff, Emlyn Tennell and of course Vince Lombardi.
Darren Hayes:And Tom Landry on the coaching staff.
Darren Hayes:Just some excellent folks.
Darren Hayes:Andy Robustelli was on there as well as a player.
Darren Hayes:So just some tremendous people and a tremendous season that they had.
Darren Hayes:Now, they went through the season and ended up having an overall record of eight wins, three losses and one tie.
Darren Hayes:So let's go through real quick, sort of how their season started off.
Darren Hayes:They started off the beginning of September by beating the San Francisco 49ers 38 to 21 in California.
Darren Hayes:So had to make that west coast trip.
Darren Hayes: And think about that in: Darren Hayes:How long of a trip that was, even by plane or train.
Darren Hayes:However they did it, it's still a long journey.
Darren Hayes:October 7th, they were at Chicago playing the Cardinals, who were then in the Windy City as their hometown.
Darren Hayes: ed up losing to the Cardinals: Darren Hayes:Maybe a little bit of a jet lag or travel lag from being away from home so long.
Darren Hayes:Then a third stop on the road against the Cleveland Browns where they beat the Browns 21 to 9.
Darren Hayes:So that was a big victory for them.
Darren Hayes:So they're 2 and 1 after three straight road games.
Darren Hayes:Their first home games against Pittsburgh Steelers, they won 38 to 10.
Darren Hayes:And next week, October 28th at home, they defeat the Philadelphia Eagles 20 to 3.
Darren Hayes:They play at the Steelers, win close 117 to 14, and then beat the Chicago Cardinals at home 23 to 10.
Darren Hayes:Avenging that earlier loss.
Darren Hayes:They then play the Washington Redskins in D.C.
Darren Hayes:and lose 7 to 33.
Darren Hayes:They got blown out in that one, not sure what happened.
Darren Hayes:And then the Chicago Bears come to town and they tie 17.
Darren Hayes: ashington redskins, beat them: Darren Hayes:Then defeating the Eagles 217 in Philadelphia.
Darren Hayes:There's a regular season.
Darren Hayes:They end up being the best team in the east, best record in the East.
Darren Hayes:The Chicago Bears had an 821 record and they were the masters of the Western Division.
Darren Hayes:They get to play in a championship game, the NFL championship game.
Darren Hayes:Back then they alternated the home sites.
Darren Hayes:This time it Was supposed to be the eastern division home team site.
Darren Hayes:So the Giants were going to have the game.
Darren Hayes:And it wasn't at the Polo Grounds this time.
Darren Hayes: e home field of the Giants in: Darren Hayes:So this will be the first championship game in the Yankee Stadium for the NFL championship game anyway.
Darren Hayes:And you know, the Bears were actually favored even though they had tied 17 all earlier in the season.
Darren Hayes:Well, it was a 20 degree day on that day on December 30th, you know, just a few days after Christmas, A few days before New Year's Day.
Darren Hayes:20 degrees out there was like a rain storm that turned to ice.
Darren Hayes:So Yankee Stadium was just a sheet of ice.
Darren Hayes:Pretty bad.
Darren Hayes: Kind of reminiscent of the: Darren Hayes:Icy conditions.
Darren Hayes:Well, the Giants seemed to learn from that what happened 22 years earlier.
Darren Hayes: to wear sneakers during this: Darren Hayes: the sneakers a game again in: Darren Hayes:The Bears decided to wear their cleats.
Darren Hayes:They didn't learn their lesson.
Darren Hayes:And the Giants pull off a stunning 47 to 7 victory.
Darren Hayes:They just blow the doors off of the Chicago Bears.
Darren Hayes:Bears didn't even know what hit them.
Darren Hayes:Couldn't get their feet, couldn't get their traction.
Darren Hayes:And they're.
Darren Hayes:The sneakers once again gave him the traction on the field to take him on to victory.
Darren Hayes:So just some tremendous offensive play in defensive play by the Giants in those really bad conditions to do it.
Darren Hayes:So the Giants came right out of the gate, scored in the first quarter three times, a touchdown and two field goals.
Darren Hayes:Mel Triplett had the first on a 17 yard run early in the game, then a touchdown.
Darren Hayes:The second quarter, Alex Webster had a three yard run and then a one yard run shortly after that.
Darren Hayes:And Henry Moore recovered a block in the end zone.
Darren Hayes:So the Giants are way up.
Darren Hayes:It's you know, almost like 28 to 7 I think at halftime in that game.
Darren Hayes:34 to 7.
Darren Hayes:I'm sorry, at halftime.
Darren Hayes:Third quarter, Kyle Rote has a nine yard pass from Char.
Darren Hayes:Charlie Connerly.
Darren Hayes:Who?
Darren Hayes:It was the quarterback.
Darren Hayes:We forgot to mention Charlie Connerly on that team too.
Darren Hayes:How we could forget him?
Darren Hayes:And Frank Gifford had a 14 yard pass from Connerly in the fourth quarter.
Darren Hayes:All in 47 to 7.
Darren Hayes:Giants win.
Darren Hayes:Win the championship.
Darren Hayes:Sneakers game.
Darren Hayes:True.
Darren Hayes:Could have possibly be called.
Darren Hayes:Well, they did it again.
Darren Hayes:And what a great season for the Giants again upsetting the Bears in you know, in this ice in New York City, first time in 34 the Polo Grounds, second time 56 at Yankee Stadium.
Darren Hayes:And what a great thing to do to be a Giants fan in those days.
Darren Hayes:So that's just another great piece of history for the New York Giants 100.
