Season #24 Episode: #27 Shaun Boyce and Ben Hestley

In this episode of Gotennis’s Atlanta Tennis Podcast, Ben Hestly dives deep into the often-overlooked but effective strategy of holding return. This skill is crucial in ensuring success particularly if you are competing at the B or C or Junior level. Join Shaun, as he listens to the Ben Hestley tennis tip.

Our Expert:

Ben Hestley: He is a USPTA certified tennis professional coach. He is currently working with the Bull Shark Sports. GPTA named Ben the Independent Tennis Professional of the Year, 2022 for creating a tennis program at neighborhood facilities for nearly 150 kids. He has huge experience in working at the junior level.

Understanding the Efficacy of Holding The Return

  • Hold return: Holding your return is a strategy when your opponent is at service and you try to score by breaking the service. It is a technique where you can use an opportunity meant for your opponent to your advantage.
  • Potency: Holding return can be effective at all levels but it is especially potent at the B, C or Junior level tennis. At these stages of tennis, the service is often the least developed tennis skill in players. So, once your opponent has done the serve and  then a powerful and well-placed return can immediately put the server at the baseline and stop him/her from further attack and be on defense.

Other Implications

  • Mastering your hold on return cultivates aggressive mindset in returns
  • It facilitates attacking mentality, confidence and consistency in all levels of players

Hey, hey, this is Shaun with the Atlanta Tennis Podcast,

Speaker:

powered by GoTennis.

Today's tennis tip comes from Coach Ben Hesley

Speaker:

of Bull Shark Sports.

Speaker:

Have a listen and let us know what you think.

Speaker:

Speaker:

Hi, this is Ben Hesley from Bull Shark Sports.

Speaker:

Today's tip, we're gonna be focused on holding return.

Speaker:

Holding return means winning our return games.

Speaker:

Very similar to how you hear holding surf,

Speaker:

we're focused on winning the games

Speaker:

in which someone is serving to us.

Speaker:

In B and C, out to levels and low levels

Speaker:

of junior competition, this is often the case

Speaker:

because the surf is developmentally weaker

Speaker:

than other parts of players' games.

Speaker:

So it presents an opportunity to take advantage

Speaker:

of our opponent's surf and then break their surf

Speaker:

or what we like to call holding return.

Speaker:

So when you're out there playing,

Speaker:

think about how you can take advantage

Speaker:

of that weaker surf, attack that,

Speaker:

and then hold your return.

Speaker:

Holding return is a concept maybe something I've not heard,

Speaker:

but holding return is really, really viable

Speaker:

in order to win matches at those B and C,

Speaker:

out to levels and those lower levels

Speaker:

of junior competition.

Speaker:

I hope this helps.

Speaker:

I hope that you learn to attack people's surf,

Speaker:

be aggressive and hold return.
