Adam Curry is the co-founder of Podcasting (and the co-host of the No Agenda Show). When asked about learning how to podcast Adam said, "The place to go with the guy who has taught more people how to podcast than anybody I know - Dave Jackson, School of Podcasting.com"
Today on episode number 954 of the School of Podcasting.
Dave Jackson: pshire, at ecamm creator Camp: Dave Jackson:And I have ten things, maybe eleven if you're good, that I learned at camp.
Dave Jackson:And wait till you hear about the one that made everyone squeal like a teenager at a Taylor Swift concert.
Dave Jackson:Let's start the show, the school of podcasting with Dave Jackson.
Dave Jackson: Podcasting since: Dave Jackson:I am your award winning hall of Fame podcast coach, Dave Jackson, thanking you so much for tuning in.
Dave Jackson:If you're new to the show, this is where I help you plan.
Dave Jackson:I help you launch, I help you grow.
Dave Jackson:And hey, if you want to monetize your podcast, my website is schoolofpodcasting.com.
Dave Jackson:use the coupon code listener, that's l a s t e n e r when you sign up for either a monthly or yearly subscription.
Dave Jackson:So the first thing we have to figure out, what the heck is an ecamm?
Dave Jackson:Ecamm is a software program that makes it super easy to do both live stream, or if you just want to make like, recorded videos, screen shares, things like that.
Dave Jackson:It is amazing.
Dave Jackson:And here's one of the things we're going to talk about.
Dave Jackson:Setting yourself apart.
Dave Jackson:It's only available if you're on a Mac.
Dave Jackson:Yep.
Dave Jackson:Now why is that?
Dave Jackson:Because you're cutting out a big chunk of your audience.
Dave Jackson:Well, yeah, but on the other hand, what a community.
Dave Jackson:And that's one of the things we're going to talk about.
Dave Jackson:The community that has formed around this software is absolutely insane.
Dave Jackson:And so that's where we're gonna get to today.
Dave Jackson:Number one, the first one was from a guy named Daniel Chi.
Dave Jackson:He did a presentation on presenting, and normally he's kind of like the super techy, nerdy guy, that ecamm.
Dave Jackson:And he did something that I love, and that is, he takes a concept that I believe and, you know, something I actually use.
Dave Jackson:And he just said it so much better.
Dave Jackson:That's more impactful.
Dave Jackson:It's easier to understand.
Dave Jackson:And I was like, oh, I am so borrowing that.
Dave Jackson:And that is, he mentioned the three f's, and it goes like this.
Dave Jackson:So think of this.
Dave Jackson:I've said many times on this show, if you can be a little vulnerable, if you can kind of show that, I know what it's like.
Dave Jackson:Show a little empathy.
Dave Jackson:And Daniel came up the three f's, and I know how you feel.
Dave Jackson:I felt the same way.
Dave Jackson:Here is what I found.
Dave Jackson:And when he said that, I was like, oh, that is such a cool way of saying that I know how you feel.
Dave Jackson:I felt the same way.
Dave Jackson:Here's what I found.
Dave Jackson:And I love the fact that a, it just oozes compassion and empathy.
Dave Jackson:But that last part about.
Dave Jackson:Here's what I found that kind of positions you as, hey, follow me, and I will show you the way around this.
Dave Jackson:Now, the other thing I want to mention about this, this is great information.
Dave Jackson:And in the show notes, out@schoolofpodcasting.com.
Dave Jackson:954.
Dave Jackson:So if you're like, hey, this Daniel Chi guy sounds like a good guy, I have links.
Dave Jackson:Write to Daniel Chi, and Chi is chi.
Dave Jackson:Daniel Chi live.
Dave Jackson:But I also got to go to an alpaca farm.
Dave Jackson:Now, why did I go to an alpaca farm?
Dave Jackson:Because I've never been to an alpaca farm.
Dave Jackson:And I was like, let's go to an alpaca farm.
Dave Jackson:So I got to actually feed an alpaca, which was fun.
Dave Jackson:And Daniel was part of my group, and he's a really cool guy.
Dave Jackson:And so the first thing I learned was the three f's.
Speaker B:Number two.
Dave Jackson:All right, now the next thing, and this is the one I was talking about, that if you want to see, and I say this with love and compassion, a bunch of nerds.
Dave Jackson:Like, a bunch of video, live streaming nerds.
Dave Jackson:And they had a guy from Zoom.
Dave Jackson:You know, Zoom, the, you know, the person.
Dave Jackson:We've learned to grow in love, thanks to our good friend Covid.
Dave Jackson:Yeah, that zoom.
Dave Jackson:That company integrates with ecamm and ecamm now because it wasn't hard to join an ecamm live stream, but everybody knows how to join a zoom call, so zoom now integrates with ecamm.
Dave Jackson:And so now instead of saying, hey, here's my link to ecamm, just go, here's my link to zoom.
Dave Jackson:And you can bring people in all sorts of really cool stuff, but we're in a room filled with video people who apparently, for a while now, have not been happy.
Dave Jackson:And I didn't know this.
Dave Jackson:Did you know this zoom resolution is, like, 720.
Dave Jackson:And so the guy from Zoom is there a.
Dave Jackson:And he's explaining how he's happy to work with ecamm, and it's a great integration and extra tools and what they're doing, and blah, blah, blah.
Dave Jackson:And then he said, oh, by the way, we do have an announcement.
Dave Jackson:He said, all you have to do is go in, I guess, and turn it on.
Dave Jackson: But Zoom is going to: Dave Jackson:And it was like Christmas had come early.
Dave Jackson:People are pounding on the tables.
Dave Jackson:They're stomping their feet.
Dave Jackson: y really have been asking for: Dave Jackson:So from what I understand, you go in to your Zoom settings and you turn on hd.
Dave Jackson:If not, you can request it.
Dave Jackson:But that was one thing.
Dave Jackson:I was like, okay, I'll have to look into that.
Speaker B:Number three, I had never heard of.
Dave Jackson:This, and I'm surprised.
Dave Jackson:In all the Facebook groups and Reddit places, nobody's ever mentioned this.
Dave Jackson:There is a remote settings app for Zoom.
Dave Jackson:Now I know why people haven't talked about it, because it's not easy to find.
Dave Jackson:I sat right next to the Zoom guy at dinner, and he's like, yeah, just go to the Zoom app store or something.
Dave Jackson:And it's there.
Dave Jackson:It took me a bit to find it, but what this is, you can see your guest settings.
Dave Jackson:So when they have a microphone, but it sounds like they're on their built in laptop microphone, you could see that.
Dave Jackson:And then what you do is you can't take over their machine, but you can see their settings and go, ooh.
Dave Jackson:And then you click on, okay, let's use this microphone.
Dave Jackson:Let's do this.
Dave Jackson:Let's do that.
Dave Jackson:Whatever that use, you know, musical settings, turn off background, whatever you're going to do, right.
Dave Jackson:You can change the settings, and then you send them a request that comes up on their screen that says, hey, so and so wants to change your settings to this.
Dave Jackson:And when they say, okay, it does.
Dave Jackson:And so I know a lot of us were on a budget.
Dave Jackson:I know how you feel.
Dave Jackson:Right?
Dave Jackson:We go back to the three f's.
Dave Jackson:I know what it felt.
Dave Jackson:Here's what I found.
Dave Jackson:You can control your guests zoom settings with this app.
Dave Jackson:Now, I personally have not used this yet.
Dave Jackson:I just found it.
Dave Jackson:Links in the show notes out@schoolofpodcasting.com.
Dave Jackson:954 number four, I was happy to share this when I got home with Craig van Slyke.
Dave Jackson:He's a member of the School of podcasting, and he does a show called AI goes to college, because I had never heard of this.
Dave Jackson:I think if you've never played with AI, a lot of these AI image tools, you know, in the early days, they'd give you like six fingers, and that's been kind of fixed.
Dave Jackson:But the one thing that hadn't been fixed is if you said, give me a sign that says 50% off, it just, the, the text always looked horrendous.
Dave Jackson:Well, I went to a session with Jeff C and Ian Anderson, and this is not the guy from Jethro Tall.
Dave Jackson:And they had a giant list of AI tools, and one of them was ideogram AI.
Dave Jackson:And I put in a quick prompt.
Dave Jackson:I told it, I said, make an illustration of a dark blue square with the text power of podcasting in white, and then add some lightning bolts around the text, and it spit out like three or four.
Dave Jackson:And I was like, that's not awful.
Dave Jackson:Like, that's definitely better than whatever I would do in canva.
Dave Jackson:And it took all of, I don't know, 20 seconds, something like that.
Dave Jackson:And so that was one that I was like, oh, that's really, really cool.
Dave Jackson:And I should say, this is the power of word of mouth.
Dave Jackson:I've known Jeff for years, but really, in the last year, we've kind of got to know each other.
Dave Jackson:I've been on his show.
Dave Jackson:His show, by the way, social media news live.
Dave Jackson:It's a great show.
Dave Jackson:Every Friday I've been on that show.
Dave Jackson:And Jeff was on this show talking about Pinterest.
Dave Jackson:You can find him at Jeff C.
Dave Jackson:Now.
Dave Jackson:C is sieh.com, and I'll put links to his YouTube and everything else out at the show notes.
Dave Jackson:And I was doing an episode of Ask the podcast coach, and I've only been using ecamm for about six months.
Dave Jackson:And Jeff's like, oh, you should go to ecamm creator cam.
Dave Jackson:And I was like, okay.
Dave Jackson:And he's like, yeah, it's really cool.
Dave Jackson:It's one of the best events.
Dave Jackson:And simply by saying that, I went to the website for it, saw what the price was, and ordered it without really knowing what the heck I got into.
Dave Jackson:And the other cool thing was, I got to hang out with Jeff and his co host, Connor of, again, social media news Live.
Dave Jackson:And Connor's amazing.
Dave Jackson:So is Jeff.
Dave Jackson:I and Jeff's daughter was there, and this was really cool for me on kind of a, and nobody probably knows what I mean when I say this, a Norman Rockwell moment, because Jeff's 23, 23 year old daughter is helping him with the production of his show, more or less following in her dad's footsteps.
Dave Jackson:And.
Dave Jackson:And I say this with love and compassion, of course.
Dave Jackson:She was very 23.
Dave Jackson:She was talking about what she wants to do with her life and what she has planned, and I'm like, I remember thinking that.
Dave Jackson:And so it was very cool to meet her.
Dave Jackson:Connor had me in stitches all week.
Dave Jackson:And, oh, I need to explain again that I've now done my homework.
Dave Jackson:Ian Anderson has another name.
Dave Jackson:Ian Anderson Gray.
Dave Jackson:Probably because he got tired of saying, no, I'm not the guy in Jethro tall.
Dave Jackson:But I'll have links to him.
Dave Jackson:He's, again, this guy that's just worked with all sorts of companies and as we like to say here, he appears to be a big shot smarty pants.
Dave Jackson:And so he had a ton of great info as well.
Speaker B:Number five.
Dave Jackson:And I'll have links to that text AI tool again, idiogram.
Dave Jackson:But the next one was one of my favorites.
Dave Jackson:When I saw this guy was going to be at ecamm creator camp, I'm like, oh, I'm definitely clicking go.
Dave Jackson:And his name is Daniel Patel.
Dave Jackson:Hes a YouTube consultant and he has an amazing YouTube channel, especially if you want to learn DaVinci Resolve.
Dave Jackson:And he shared what I feel is like the worlds best analogy of how coke now were talking.
Dave Jackson:The soft drink here is like the worlds best multichannel distributor because, you know, as a content creator, we put things out as a podcast, we put things out on YouTube, we put things out on Twitter, put things out here.
Dave Jackson:Multi platform distributor.
Dave Jackson:And he said the very first multi platform distributor was Coke, to which we all kind of went, huh?
Dave Jackson:But he said, in the early days of coke, when it was in bottles, back in the day, you might see a vending machine at a gas station or some other hot place where thirsty people might be and you would put your money in, a bottle would come out, you would use this built in bottle opener that was right on the door and start, you know, dumping gallons of coke down your throat.
Dave Jackson:And later you could buy a can and it might be any of their many flavors, right?
Dave Jackson:Diet Coke, caffeine free coke there a coke everywhere, a coke coke, right?
Dave Jackson:So you'd have a machine, but now it was cans giving you one at a time.
Dave Jackson:So now no bottle opener needed.
Dave Jackson:You just flip the thing.
Dave Jackson:And I mean, now you've got the coke thing, right?
Dave Jackson:But you could, if you wanted to go to a grocery store, and now instead of buying them one at a time, you could buy them as a six pack, as a twelve pack.
Dave Jackson:Now, these weren't cold, they weren't supposed to be.
Dave Jackson:They were designed to be taken home and put in your fridge.
Dave Jackson:But it was the same product, meaning the audience where they were giving them what they needed at that time.
Dave Jackson:Now they're also two liter bottles.
Dave Jackson:There's 20 ounce bottles.
Dave Jackson:You can buy a six pack, a 20 ounce bottles, right?
Dave Jackson:You can do all that stuff.
Dave Jackson:But the bottom line is coke met their audience where they were in a format they needed and delivered a consistent product.
Dave Jackson:Another one was, well, let's see, we have all these restaurants.
Dave Jackson:And it wouldn't make any sense.
Dave Jackson:Can you imagine how many two liters or how many cases of coke you would have to have to feed coke to your patrons in your restaurant?
Dave Jackson:So what they do, they started selling coke as a syrup mix in a little fizzy water, and presto, here's your coke again, same product, meeting the audience where they are in a format that they can use.
Dave Jackson:And to me, if you've, you know, you're new to the show, if you make me think you got me.
Dave Jackson:And I was like, you know what?
Dave Jackson:That's true.
Dave Jackson:That's very true.
Dave Jackson:And the last time I checked, Coca Cola is a pretty successful company.
Dave Jackson:So that was one that I was like, man, I knew this guy was going to be good, but that really had me thinking.
Speaker B:Number six.
Dave Jackson:All right, this one I kind of already knew, but I wanted to kind of let you in on this.
Dave Jackson:Daniel is a badass.
Dave Jackson:There's no other way to put this.
Dave Jackson:I found his channel about a year ago when a company called Wondershare, Filmora decided which, by the way, Daniel was like the Filmora guy at the time.
Dave Jackson:And they decided not to honor their lifetime licenses to their software, which Daniel had kind of built part of his empire on.
Dave Jackson:And he had told all of his audience, hey, buy this lifetime license and check out this great software.
Dave Jackson:Here's my tutorials.
Dave Jackson:And so when he went to login and the software was like, nope, sorry, we don't honor that license anymore.
Dave Jackson:Yeah, Daniel went public and said, hey, just so you guys know, this is what happened to me this morning.
Dave Jackson:Well, you know, again, Phil Mora, Wondershare, whatever, they decided not to honor their license.
Dave Jackson:And when he had kind of thrown them under the bus, and he really didn't throw them under the bus, he's just like, hey, my license doesn't work.
Dave Jackson:And according to this memo, fill Mora isn't going to honor their license.
Dave Jackson:And so when he went public, how did Fillmora, you know, reply?
Dave Jackson:Did they go, oh, we were.
Dave Jackson:No, no.
Dave Jackson:They went after his channel and they demanded a video that they had sponsored be removed.
Dave Jackson:Yeah.
Dave Jackson:So they actually went after Daniel.
Dave Jackson:And so what did Daniel do?
Dave Jackson:He shared this on his content.
Dave Jackson:Hey, everybody, look what Filmora is doing to me.
Dave Jackson:They're trying to ruin my channel and do all this other stuff.
Dave Jackson:And let's just say that Filmora's move of attacking everyone's mentor did not go over well.
Dave Jackson:So Filmora finally did the right thing, but not without hinting that they might sue people who said things they didn't appreciate.
Dave Jackson:So in the show notes out at school, podcasting.com 954, I have a link to that playlist and it is fascinating.
Dave Jackson:And to me, the, I'm not really an old hippie, that would be my brother, but I love the fact that he just basically waved the bird at the company and was kind of like, okay, I'm going to release the kraken on you.
Dave Jackson:And because when people saw how he was being treated, they just dumped the software.
Dave Jackson:And that's when they're like, oh, hey, we were just kidding.
Dave Jackson:We're going to honor that.
Dave Jackson:But not before.
Dave Jackson:Not only because that story was such an insanely bad idea of customer service that other even more popular youtubers were talking about it and bringing the story to the forefront.
Dave Jackson:So I love the fact that he just kept his cool circle the wagons.
Dave Jackson:And if you ever wonder why he's not talking about Fillmore anymore, he's now Mister Davinci resolve.
Dave Jackson:Well, that's it.
Dave Jackson:But I just love that story.
Dave Jackson:And the fact that he's like, yeah, I don't think so.
Speaker B:Number seven.
Dave Jackson:Yeah, I got a lot from his, his talk.
Dave Jackson:So the other one is Daniel.
Dave Jackson:His way of achieving success is one way of doing it.
Dave Jackson:And I love his channel.
Dave Jackson:Again, he shared on his channel how he really likes YouTube shorts.
Dave Jackson:Well, depending on the YouTube guru you're talking to, I've seen other people very strongly say YouTube shorts will ruin your channel.
Dave Jackson:And in this case, Daniel even kind of said, look, your mileage may vary, but he shared lots of slides to back up his strategy of where he was using shorts on a really regular, and here's that word, consistent basis.
Dave Jackson:And in the end, all those people, there was a company called Black Magic Design.
Dave Jackson:They are the makers of Da Vinci resolve.
Dave Jackson:And so they started asking their customers, hey, how did you find out about DaVinci resolve?
Dave Jackson:And one name came up over and over and over, Daniel Battal.
Dave Jackson:And so they went to him and said, we would like to sponsor your YouTube channel to the tune of six figures.
Dave Jackson:So when people say shorts don't work, I'm going to go, have you ever heard of Daniel Patel?
Dave Jackson:And so it's not that Daniel's way is the way.
Dave Jackson:It is a way.
Dave Jackson:And it works for his audience.
Dave Jackson:Every audience is different.
Dave Jackson:But I just love the fact that he shared it and he had the stats to back it up.
Dave Jackson:And I was like, all right, that's.
Dave Jackson:To me, I was like, that's a way to do it.
Dave Jackson:And I know.
Dave Jackson:And he even said, there are a lot of people that disagree with him.
Dave Jackson:And I was like, well, maybe we need to start kind of reemphasizing that when we say these are the best practices to point you towards a way of success.
Dave Jackson:But if somebody says, I have the way, like, if.
Dave Jackson:If you just do this, you will be successful.
Dave Jackson:I'm not sure that's 100% accurate.
Dave Jackson:And if they're trying to get you to sign up for three easy payments, eh, you know, you might want to just do a little more research.
Speaker B:Number eight.
Dave Jackson:All right.
Dave Jackson:And I realize some of these are kind of duh, but I also saw how to build a software company.
Dave Jackson:ECamm was created by two twin brothers, Ken and Glenn.
Dave Jackson:And I'm going to butcher their last name.
Dave Jackson:Aspelag.
Dave Jackson:Aspilah.
Dave Jackson:Aspilah.
Dave Jackson:Maybe silent G.
Dave Jackson:I don't know.
Dave Jackson:Ken and Glenn, that's what I call them.
Dave Jackson:And I love that they started with a simple goal of building apps to solve problems.
Dave Jackson:Because if you want to make money with anything, with a company, with a podcast, whatever, 99% of the time you are solving a problem, whether it's saving somebody time, saving them money, saving them headaches, saving them from a bad day at work, by making them.
Dave Jackson:LAUghtER people typically pay when you solve a problem.
Dave Jackson:And if you want them to buy something, if you want to make money with your podcast, I always say the best way is to have a product or service.
Dave Jackson:And sometimes that service is, you know, a supercast or Patreon or whatever you want to do.
Dave Jackson:But realize you, the best way is not, again, not the way.
Dave Jackson:It's one of the ways.
Dave Jackson:But according to their website, our strategy is if an app is useful, well designed, and properly maintained, it will sell itself without the need for clever advertising and glitzy marketing.
Dave Jackson:And the twins were there, right?
Dave Jackson:The owners of ecamm were there all week, just hanging out with their customers.
Dave Jackson:Because how do you grow your podcast?
Dave Jackson:You find out what people want, and then you give it to them.
Dave Jackson: they have on the roadmap for: Dave Jackson:So, you know that de Esser or that plosive fixer or all the other plugins we've talked about here.
Dave Jackson:Yeah.
Dave Jackson:That's coming to ecamm.
Dave Jackson:And they know.
Dave Jackson:They know that people want local recording, and they're probably working on that behind the scenes.
Dave Jackson:So the same way you build a successful software company is the same way you build a podcast.
Dave Jackson:You find out who your audience is.
Dave Jackson:And they said people who own Macs, because here's the other thing.
Dave Jackson:As much as like, oh, they're so stupid.
Dave Jackson:There's a whole, you know, PC kind of market.
Dave Jackson:Yeah.
Dave Jackson:But when everybody's on the same operating system, it's a whole lot easier to write software, don't you think?
Dave Jackson:And so they realize they can make it bigger.
Dave Jackson:But I'm here to tell you, the ecamm fam, as they call it, their Facebook group is great.
Dave Jackson:Everybody there, it really was a family kind of feel to it.
Dave Jackson:And here I was the first time at their event.
Dave Jackson:This is the second year they've had it, and I was welcome with open arms.
Dave Jackson:So I just thought it was a really cool way and a really great kind of case study on how to build a software company.
Speaker B:Number nine.
Dave Jackson:Number nine.
Dave Jackson:Number nine is, if you want to stand out, you ready for this?
Dave Jackson:You got to do something different.
Dave Jackson:And I've attended some events.
Dave Jackson:When they first started, I was at pot indie last year.
Dave Jackson:That was the first time they did it.
Dave Jackson:Pot indie is coming up in November 9, and theyre terrific because everyone got to consume the exact same content.
Dave Jackson:And because theyre smaller, you get to network with everyone and then kind of unfortunately, look, we do our best to keep that small feel while we make these events huge.
Dave Jackson:And don't get me wrong, I love Podfest.
Dave Jackson:I'm speaking at Podfest in January.
Dave Jackson:I love podcast movement, but I adore the fact that ecamm topped the attendees at 100.
Dave Jackson:They said, hey, if you want to be here, they're only letting 100 in.
Dave Jackson:Get your tickets now.
Dave Jackson:And they went quick.
Dave Jackson:And if they're, if it was me, I would raise the price for next year.
Dave Jackson:But they're not doing it as a money maker.
Dave Jackson:They're doing it to find out what their community wants, what they're thinking, and so that they can make a product.
Dave Jackson:And by keeping it cheap and delivering enormous value, you walk out of that ecamm cam telling everybody you know, oh, no, no.
Dave Jackson:I know Riverside's great, and it edits and all that stuff, but if you're on a Mac and you're not using ecamm, you at least got to give it a shot.
Dave Jackson:It's an amazing program.
Dave Jackson:And so I would love to see more events like this, like pod indie.com.
Dave Jackson:use the coupon code, Dave, because there is a virtual ticket, by the way, for that.
Dave Jackson:And I like to see small events to go along with the big ones.
Dave Jackson:I don't want the big ones.
Dave Jackson:Cause I don't think they would ever go and like, hey, instead of doing one big event, we're gonna do three, and we're gonna cap it at like 200 people.
Dave Jackson:I just.
Dave Jackson:I don't see them doing that.
Dave Jackson:And for the record, I know why.
Dave Jackson:The amount of effort it takes to do a small event is kind of the same amount of effort to do a larger event.
Dave Jackson:There's just much more risk when.
Dave Jackson:When people buy a block of hotels if we don't fill those.
Dave Jackson:That event has to eat that money, and that's spooky.
Dave Jackson:And so I guess they would rather take that chance once than multiple times.
Dave Jackson:Not really sure.
Dave Jackson:But just for me, it stood out like a.
Dave Jackson:Like a beautiful sore thumb.
Dave Jackson:Like, this is way different than any of their conference.
Dave Jackson:In fact, when I signed up, they're like, this is not like any other conference.
Dave Jackson:And they did not lie at all.
Dave Jackson:They also had one of the best swag bags.
Dave Jackson:There was a newer.
Dave Jackson:You know, that company.
Dave Jackson:Newer, newer, newer.
Dave Jackson:Whatever it is.
Dave Jackson:Little light that you could use.
Dave Jackson:Well, really probably with anything.
Dave Jackson:It was pretty blinding.
Dave Jackson:So it was cool that you got something in your swag bag that you could go home and actually use.
Dave Jackson:And they had a.
Dave Jackson:If you do light balancing, you know, white balancing, and then you get the white card, the gray card and all that.
Dave Jackson:They had one of those that's like worth $20 or something like that.
Dave Jackson:So that was cool.
Dave Jackson:And since we're kind of on the topic of standing out, I didn't learn this at Ecamm creator camp, but I did learn it on the plane.
Dave Jackson:I'm listening to the book earn it unconventional strategies for brave marketers.
Dave Jackson:This is from Steve Pratt, and there are some great ideas of doing things to set yourself apart.
Dave Jackson:Now, it does make it sound like creating an amazing show takes work, and that's because, well, it kind of does.
Speaker C:In the last 40 years, the amount of promotion has gone up exponentially.
Speaker C:At the same time, the success of promoted content, products, and services hasn't increased at all.
Speaker C:That's because the secret isn't to focus on your promo.
Speaker C:The secret is to create something that those you serve want to tell others about.
Dave Jackson:And he's actually quoting Seth Godin there, but he does that a lot.
Dave Jackson:He quotes other marketing books.
Dave Jackson:So it's a great book so far.
Dave Jackson:I'm.
Dave Jackson:Where am I at?
Dave Jackson:Chapter four.
Dave Jackson:And it's called earn it unconventional strategies for brave marketers.
Speaker B:Number ten.
Dave Jackson:And this one made me think.
Dave Jackson:And I'm like, he might have a point.
Dave Jackson:And that is my buddy doc rock is on the flow.
Dave Jackson:That is ecamm's podcast YouTube channel.
Dave Jackson:He's there with Katie.
Dave Jackson:And he says, an introvert.
Dave Jackson:He says, there aren't any.
Dave Jackson:There are no introverts.
Dave Jackson:And if you're an introvert, you're going, no, I think there is.
Dave Jackson:You're looking at one.
Dave Jackson:Right.
Dave Jackson:An introvert is a person that doesn't like the present company, because every one of those people around, somebody that you know, somebody, their friends, whoever, their spouse, well, you can't get them to shut up.
Dave Jackson:So if you're super quiet around other people, it's because you don't know them yet, or maybe you don't like them.
Dave Jackson:And I was like, hmm, interesting.
Dave Jackson:I will say this.
Dave Jackson:I've said in the past that I get nervous around meeting other people, and I I think I'm lying to myself on that.
Dave Jackson:I had one little moment where I was kind of like, uh, but for the most part, I just talked to people and asked them what brought to the show, and I'm getting much better at that.
Dave Jackson:So maybe there are no introverts.
Dave Jackson:Maybe we're just hanging around people that we're not comfortable with.
Dave Jackson:And how do you get comfortable with people?
Dave Jackson:You gotta talk to them.
Dave Jackson:We have a bonus clip about the hotel coming up right after this.
Dave Jackson:All right, the bonus one.
Dave Jackson:Number eleven.
Dave Jackson:Stay at the hotel.
Dave Jackson:And I know, and I'll kind of explain what happened here.
Dave Jackson:I stayed at a hotel, was the best western.
Dave Jackson:And I'm gonna say five to seven minutes from the hotel was a Hampton inn.
Dave Jackson:And I ended up, uh, paying anywhere from $20 to $35 a day for Uber rides.
Dave Jackson:And the hotel, the official one, was 180.
Dave Jackson:So, yes, mine was 110.
Dave Jackson:Theirs was 180.
Dave Jackson:And so.
Dave Jackson:But I'm spending, you know, $35 a day to go back and forth to the downtown area where they had this.
Dave Jackson:So I saved $35 a day, which, again, I was there quite a few days.
Dave Jackson:So I saved $175.
Dave Jackson:So I basically, it's like getting a hotel room night for free.
Dave Jackson:But.
Dave Jackson:And I realize, I feel.
Dave Jackson:I know how you feel.
Dave Jackson:$175 is a chunk of change.
Dave Jackson:And I would.
Dave Jackson:I would change this if the hotel was in walking distance.
Dave Jackson:So if the hotel from the event was here and there was one, like, you know, three blocks that way, that you could save some money, maybe.
Dave Jackson:But here's the thing.
Dave Jackson:I'm in Amesbury.
Dave Jackson:Well, actually, I was in Manchester, New Hampshire, and then I took an Uber into Amesbury.
Dave Jackson:And if you're probably going, Manchester?
Dave Jackson:What?
Dave Jackson:Yeah.
Dave Jackson:So consequently, not maybe as many Uber drivers as, say, if I was in Boston.
Dave Jackson:And so when I would go to get ready to drive downtown.
Dave Jackson:To get more great content, I would have to start looking for an Uber about 30 minutes.
Dave Jackson:So more or less an hour because it was, I don't know, ten minutes.
Dave Jackson:But I would.
Dave Jackson:I remember the one time I'm like, hey, find me an Uberland.
Dave Jackson:And it was like, all right, we're working on it.
Dave Jackson:Okay, we're sorry for the delay.
Dave Jackson:Don't close this app because we're still looking.
Dave Jackson:Where.
Dave Jackson:And then it finally said, hey, you know that cheap version of Uber?
Dave Jackson:Yeah.
Dave Jackson:There aren't anybody but you can take the big, oversized Uber if you'd like.
Dave Jackson:And being that I needed an Uber, I was like, yeah, because it starts at eight and it's 715, and I'd been sitting there for, like, a half hour, 20 minutes.
Dave Jackson:So that's not a, you know, again, if I just stayed at the hotel, a, I could have slept in more because it wasn't going to take so long to find an Uber.
Dave Jackson:And, you know, this is one of those.
Dave Jackson:It depends, right?
Dave Jackson:It depends on your budget.
Dave Jackson:But I just know for me, I was like, I think next time, unless I'm within walking distance of the hotel, I'm just going to stay at the hotel.
Dave Jackson:It's expensive.
Dave Jackson:If you want to write it off on your taxes, you can do that, of course.
Dave Jackson:And if you need more help with taxes, of course, go see my buddy Ralph over at ask Ralph podcast.com.
Dave Jackson:he can hook you up with all sorts of those questions.
Dave Jackson:But, uh, that was one that I was like, hmm.
Dave Jackson:And it was not like a major, uh, the.
Dave Jackson:The second day was the day it was like, yeah, we can't find anybody.
Dave Jackson:And I get why because I had, uh.
Dave Jackson:You ever have, like, chatty Cathy in Uber?
Dave Jackson:The guy's just going, there was a guy making 50 grand a year driving Uber, and he was an old professor and yada, yada, yada.
Dave Jackson:And he was explaining all this, and I saw where it was like, oh, there's somebody 17 minutes away.
Dave Jackson:But it was only, like, for $6.
Dave Jackson:And he said, yeah, he does a lot of ubering around the university, so he's ubering college kids, and their fares are, like, $4 because they want to go from here four blocks that way.
Dave Jackson:And so I get it.
Dave Jackson:And I was like, hmm.
Dave Jackson:Was an interesting experiment.
Dave Jackson:Did it save me money?
Dave Jackson:Sure.
Dave Jackson:It probably saved me $175 for the whole week, but I'm just like, yeah, it was a little stressful at times.
Dave Jackson:And I think next time I'm just going to stay at the hotel.
Dave Jackson:And also, I want to support these events, and I realize they're on the hook for that hotel, so I should be staying there.
Dave Jackson:Anyway, speaking of events.
Dave Jackson:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Dave Jackson:My last tip here, so what are we up to?
Dave Jackson:Twelve and even duds in was, if something's a pain in the butt and other people are using it, what's the one thing that's different here?
Dave Jackson:So I'll give you an example.
Dave Jackson:I do not like the community tool discord.
Dave Jackson:And anytime you're involved with an event, read all of the emails.
Dave Jackson:I know they might send a little or they might send a lot or whatever, but it's really important that you read the email.
Dave Jackson:And so I must have missed the one that said, hey, or I probably, I probably read it.
Dave Jackson:I just didn't get it where they said, we will be saying things in Discord, and if you want to keep up to date with the event, you should use discord.
Dave Jackson:And I must have saw that and went, oh, well, I'm sure they'll email us too.
Dave Jackson:And they did email us, but there was a lot of content and a lot of networking that I could have taken place with.
Dave Jackson:And there were contests and all sorts of giveaways and things like that going on in their Discord community group.
Dave Jackson:And I missed it all, totally missed it all, because I was like, ugh, I hate discord.
Dave Jackson:So it dawned on me after I got there that like, hey, idiot, everybody else seems to have no problem with discord.
Dave Jackson:Maybe it's you.
Dave Jackson:And so I was like, why do I not like it?
Dave Jackson: an Atari game from, you know,: Dave Jackson:And I was like, well, let's see what we can do about that.
Dave Jackson:So I log in.
Dave Jackson:I had like 100, literally like 150 messages unread.
Dave Jackson:And there were a bunch of these groups that I had joined their group, and I was like, yeah, I've never logged in.
Dave Jackson:I logged in.
Dave Jackson:Nobody else was in there.
Dave Jackson:They were just, you know, just a big desert of groups, but there were some that were active.
Dave Jackson:And I was like, okay, hold on, let's.
Dave Jackson:Let's prune here and get rid of all the groups that I'm never going to go into again.
Dave Jackson:And then I turned it into from dark mode into light mode and spent, I don't know, five to ten minutes learning how to send a message and learning how to reply and learning how to do this.
Dave Jackson:And I am not, what I would say, a big fan of discord, but if somebody says, hey, we communicate via discord, I can go in and get the messages.
Dave Jackson:It's available on a Mac, it's available on your phone, it's available on a PC.
Dave Jackson:And so don't be such an old stick in the mud because it makes it harder for the event organizers.
Dave Jackson:And I apologize profusely to Katie and Paul and Doc and everybody else that I was like, hey, I didn't realize this was going on.
Dave Jackson:I'm sorry.
Dave Jackson:I felt like, have you ever done that, that group project in school?
Dave Jackson:And there's always that one guy that doesn't do anything and I was like, oh, crap, I'm that guy and I don't want to be that guy.
Dave Jackson:So if there's something that you just hate, maybe it's because you haven't taken the time to learn it.
Dave Jackson:And why don't we learn it?
Dave Jackson:Because, well, that means I have to get out of my comfort zone.
Dave Jackson:And I like it in my comfort zone.
Dave Jackson:It's comfortable.
Dave Jackson:So I get that.
Dave Jackson:But if you're not constantly learning in this society, you are going backwards.
Dave Jackson:And I was just kind of like, yeah, you, you big dummy.
Dave Jackson:I should have just taken the time to learn discord and I would have had a little better time.
Dave Jackson:I missed out on deeper connections with people.
Dave Jackson: learned at ecamm creator camp: Dave Jackson:To all my new friends that are listening to the show, it was a blast hanging out with you.
Dave Jackson:And I look forward to next year because I'm definitely going back.
Dave Jackson:I will just be in the discord group.
Dave Jackson:I'll stay at the hotel and I'll be going back to, again something that will feel like Podfest and podcast movement and pod indie now is going on November 9.
Dave Jackson:Pod indie.com.
Dave Jackson:you know, those feel like summer camp to me.
Dave Jackson:And now so will ecamm creator camp.
Dave Jackson:And I also, here's the last thing.
Dave Jackson:When you come back from these things, don't go, that was cool.
Dave Jackson:No, make yourself a to do list.
Dave Jackson:And so I already did.
Dave Jackson:I'm going to install the Zoom integration with ecamm.
Dave Jackson:I'm going to be playing with that.
Dave Jackson:Like, don't just get the knowledge, do something with it.
Dave Jackson:They always go, knowledge is power.
Dave Jackson:No, knowledge is power when you act on it.
Dave Jackson:And so ive got to act on these things that I learned.
Dave Jackson:And maybe you can too.
Dave Jackson:Maybe youre going to integrate the three fs the next time you have to be empathetic to someone, maybe youre going to go play with Zoom and check out some of those settings and those things that you did or the whatever it was called idiogram.
Dave Jackson:And make yourself an AI tool with some text.
Dave Jackson:Or go check out Daniel Patel's amazing YouTube channel and check out Jeff Czdd and Ian Anderson Gray and everybody else that I mentioned.
Dave Jackson:The links are out there in the show notes, schoolofpodcasting.com 954.
Dave Jackson:And that's going to do it for the show.
Dave Jackson:I'm done.
Dave Jackson:I'm pooped, I'm tired, and I need a break.
Dave Jackson:I need a nap, and I got to unpack and do laundry.
Dave Jackson:Otherwise I'll be wearing.
Dave Jackson:You know how you have that one pair of underwear that's like, ugh.
Dave Jackson:When I see that come up in the drawer, it's like it's time to do laundry and it's time to do laundry.
Dave Jackson:So thanks so much for listening.
Dave Jackson:I do appreciate you taking time.
Dave Jackson:And if you want to start a podcast, you know where to find me.
Dave Jackson:Go to schoolofpodcasting.com, join, use the coupon code listener and save on either a monthly or yearly subscription and join the community.
Dave Jackson:Sure, we have step by step courses.
Dave Jackson:We have unlimited coaching.
Dave Jackson:I might talk about that in next week's episode.
Dave Jackson:That was one of the questions I got from Jeff.
Dave Jackson:He's like, okay, how you doing that, that unlimited thing that doesn't seem to work on paper?
Dave Jackson:Maybe I'll explain that.
Dave Jackson:Or maybe you should just join and find out.
Dave Jackson:It's actually not that complicated.
Dave Jackson:But I do appreciate your time.
Dave Jackson:Until next week.
Dave Jackson:Take care.
Dave Jackson:God bless.
Dave Jackson:Classes dismissed.
Speaker B:If you like what you hear, then don't tell someone.
