Speaker:Yeah, I
Speaker:saw you holding the note there.
Speaker:Cb.
Speaker:Well,
Speaker:those, yeah.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Welcome fans to the Hudson Homers podcast.
Speaker:It's a victory Monday here.
Speaker:Went two in one over the weekend against Quinnipiac.
Speaker:Got CB here, got Coach Finny here.
Speaker:Cb I'll start with you.
Speaker:How was your weekend?
Speaker:Hey, it was great, man.
Speaker:We got to watch baseball.
Speaker:Uh, I almost died on Wednesday.
Speaker:On uh, Friday.
Speaker:Uh, that was fun.
Speaker:I was, it was cold.
Speaker:It was, it was rough.
Speaker:Uh, but then, you know, of course Saturday was beautiful and, uh, we
Speaker:got two outta three and got to see actual baseball at the bud at that.
Speaker:It's not the bud but town, bank field at Ellmer Family Baseball Complex.
Speaker:Uh, I think,
Speaker:I do think we can still call it the bud though, because it's still the bud.
Speaker:Bud Metheny baseball something.
Speaker:So I, yeah, it'll be the Ellmer, you know, family baseball complex.
Speaker:And, uh, we're, we're I I think we can still call it the bud.
Speaker:I really do.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Until somebody don't not,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:I don't wanna disrespect any of our corporate, uh, sponsors,
Speaker:ma, feel we appreciate them.
Speaker:Uh, but yeah, but it was, but it was awesome.
Speaker:We were out there watching baseball.
Speaker:It was fantastic.
Speaker:Got to hang out with Gary some, watching the game.
Speaker:It was great.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Friday.
Speaker:I know it got a little cold where you were standing at CB behind the plate, but I'll
Speaker:tell you, I was in the left field stands on Friday, and I really didn't get any
Speaker:cold until maybe the bottom of the eighth, like the way the sun comes through.
Speaker:It was nice.
Speaker:Uh, but everyone that was involved in getting that outfield seating
Speaker:together gets a pat on the back today.
Speaker:It looks fantastic.
Speaker:It doesn't look temporary.
Speaker:Um, I was blown away when I walked through there, but just how well done it was.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Again, you know, we're super grateful for that.
Speaker:Um, our administration.
Speaker:Um, Dr. Cig, Ashley Schumacher, everybody that put that together.
Speaker:Bruce Stewart, Rick French, um, our president, um, Brian Hemphill, you
Speaker:know, all of 'em, you know, went overboard and above and beyond.
Speaker:Uh, give our fans a, a nice place to watch games from, although it's a little far
Speaker:away, but it is what we are this year.
Speaker:And, you know, I told the guys
Speaker:it's, it's a lot closer than Hampton though.
Speaker:Yes, it is.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:We gotta start, uh.
Speaker:The tradition of pointing to those stands when you hit a home run and, yeah.
Speaker:So Zedalis hit hit his on a Saturday, you know, and I was pointing out
Speaker:there and he was like, what, what?
Speaker:And I was like,
Speaker:we'll get used to it.
Speaker:We'll get, you know, as we go.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:But great crowds on both days.
Speaker:I mean, Friday, I couldn't believe it walking in there.
Speaker:I mean, I think the temperature set it was 40 something degrees,
Speaker:didn't feel like it, but it was hard to find an empty seat up there.
Speaker:Uh, and, and what we've dubbed the litter box there in right center that
Speaker:was full of Quinnipiac parents and, and family, like it looked great in the
Speaker:outfield and a really great job, our fans to show up for the first games back.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:We're very appreciative of that.
Speaker:And I, I don't know what our people are doing in terms of counting heads,
Speaker:but they're, they're shortchanges us.
Speaker:They announced like 220 for Friday, and I know there was more
Speaker:people than there that, so no
Speaker:way.
Speaker:I, I think they gotta, you know, under, they gotta learn that you need to.
Speaker:You're supposed to count everybody that's even potentially in the ballpark for,
Speaker:uh, for everybody that walks through
Speaker:the gate.
Speaker:Yeah, yeah, yeah.
Speaker:Anybody that walks down Elkhorn Avenue, going to the chemistry building, counted.
Speaker:So
Speaker:yes.
Speaker:Uh, that's how most people do it anyway, but you know, good, good.
Speaker:Pretty good weather.
Speaker:Especially Saturday.
Speaker:Got a little chilly last few innings Friday.
Speaker:But
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:overall, you know, nice, nice weather and you know, it's all, it's never
Speaker:perfect when you have to play a double header, especially right outta the chute.
Speaker:Um.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:And you know, there's go, it is what it is.
Speaker:We had to get in and yesterday, you know, it looked like a good move
Speaker:'cause it kind of rained all day.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:It was crappy.
Speaker:So.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, we'll get back to work, uh, out on the field tomorrow and, uh.
Speaker:Ready for this week's games, but we, we can go through, you know, if you guys
Speaker:want to and just talk about game one.
Speaker:Any questions, comments?
Speaker:Um, I thought generally speaking, you know, 15 to five was the final and, uh,
Speaker:I thought Darin Kuskie threw the ball.
Speaker:Well, he had the one and he gave up singles and three runs,
Speaker:but he settled back down, you know, nine strikeouts, no walks.
Speaker:Uh, that's a good workman-like first performance by him.
Speaker:Uh, and the bullpen guys came in and, and threw the ball pretty well,
Speaker:for the most part, as, as well.
Speaker:There's good to see Nick Sulpizio get back out there, throw the ball well for us.
Speaker:And, um, I thought, uh, you know, the, the downside of that game is.
Speaker:Uh, MVA Marcus Van Alstein, you know, hurt his elbow.
Speaker:He's going to see, you know, get it looked at tomorrow, so.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:It doesn't sound like it's great.
Speaker:We'll keep our fingers crossed.
Speaker:He been throwing the ball real well for out the bullpen, so that was unfortunate.
Speaker:Kids never had an arm injury.
Speaker:It's like crazy how that can happen.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Such
Speaker:a, a good guy.
Speaker:Yeah, good guy, great teammate.
Speaker:And, um, so we'll, we'll hope for the best with him and then, and keep our fingers
Speaker:crossed as we try to find that out.
Speaker:Um, so anyway, we swung the bats really well.
Speaker:I thought our approaches were good, you know, uh, we took advantage of, you
Speaker:know, a little bit of their wildness, you know, and one of the things we've
Speaker:stressed this year is just being tougher and not moving our feet on, on inside
Speaker:pitches and not jumping outta the way of breaking balls in particular,
Speaker:breaking ball off speed pitches.
Speaker:Um, and I thought our guys all weekend did a good job of that.
Speaker:Um, really frustrated their, their game three starter.
Speaker:Um, by, you know, getting, we hung in there and got hit four times.
Speaker:Got him out of the game.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, so, you know, we took our walks.
Speaker:Uh, we were very opportunistic.
Speaker:I mean, Zach late was probably the, you know, the hero of
Speaker:that game with five rbis.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:You know, comes up, hits a double his first step, bat of the season,
Speaker:drives in a couple, gets us the lead.
Speaker:And Zach had good at bats all weekend.
Speaker:So he, he, he,
Speaker:uh,
Speaker:he was very solid all weekend.
Speaker:I thought Maverick stalling, same thing.
Speaker:Good at bats.
Speaker:You know, guys were playing like, you know, two fifth year
Speaker:seniors you'd expect him to play.
Speaker:And so Scotty Young Scotty had a good weekend.
Speaker:He was kind of in the middle of a lot of scoring opportunities for us and making
Speaker:things happen with the bunk game slash game, getting hits and running the bases.
Speaker:You know, like his hair's on fire like he does.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, well.
Speaker:E Yeah.
Speaker:Everyone in the starting lineup had at least one hit in the first two games
Speaker:Friday and the first game on Saturday.
Speaker:As far as I could tell last season, I, we didn't have a game where that happened, so
Speaker:I think right off the bat, I mean, that's just getting that production up and down
Speaker:the order is getting the ball in play, draw on walks, whatever they gotta do.
Speaker:Uh, but to have everyone in your lineup get a hit in the first two games
Speaker:of the season's, pretty impressive.
Speaker:Uh, I thought, and I thought our bats were good, like, you know?
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:We were swinging at strikes.
Speaker:We weren't chasing, and, and this is what we talked about today.
Speaker:It was different in game three.
Speaker:Was that a focus thing?
Speaker:Clearly it was because we chased more, we lost our shape in the box more.
Speaker:It just wasn't the same looking group.
Speaker:And, you know, obviously the results speak.
Speaker:I mean, you know, we score 15 and 15 and we score five and we struck
Speaker:out 15 times in that third game.
Speaker:And so most of those weren't strike.
Speaker:Um, it's just chasing too much and, you know, were, were we just tired?
Speaker:Was it, what was it?
Speaker:You know, those are things that we, we, we call 'em mental
Speaker:Mondays once the season starts.
Speaker:And those are questions you ask.
Speaker:You know, you try to look at some film and, uh, you try to get in,
Speaker:in, you know, some guys that need a little extra love and talk about it.
Speaker:And some of it's mental, most of it's mental usually.
Speaker:Um, and some of it's, you know, some physical adjustments
Speaker:we need to make as well.
Speaker:So, uh, but I thought game one, we played a pretty complete game.
Speaker:Uh, we caught the ball in defense for the most part, uh, well, and pitched it
Speaker:well, made them, made them swing the bats.
Speaker:And, you know, they were a scrappy bunch, man.
Speaker:I mean, I, they're not, they're not a pushover by any means.
Speaker:They're well coached.
Speaker:They had a very veteran pitching staff.
Speaker:You could see that.
Speaker:Um, and so it was really good, um, to, to, to get off to a good start
Speaker:like that in game one on Friday.
Speaker:They were just very competitive.
Speaker:At no point were they, you could see 'em packing the end.
Speaker:They were, they were fighting the entire time.
Speaker:Yep, yep.
Speaker:And I think that's a tribute to John Delaney, their head coach.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And the coach of staff and the kind of kids they get.
Speaker:So, uh, and I reminded the guys last time they came down here
Speaker:in 2018, they, they beat us.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:They won the series against us.
Speaker:So, um, you know, game, game, one of the double header, game two of the series, I
Speaker:thought, uh, guys came out beautiful day.
Speaker:Uh, BP was so nice, you know, working up a sweat and just, just,
Speaker:you know, not, not shivering.
Speaker:Um, and, you know, the guys were, were gonna be ready to play and, uh, I thought
Speaker:JJ Gati came out and was a bit too amped up, which can happen with that.
Speaker:That's
Speaker:what I was
Speaker:wondering
Speaker:too.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:So
Speaker:yeah, it's one of those things you got thread the needle with jj, like,
Speaker:you, like his competitive nature.
Speaker:Certainly.
Speaker:But he can take it past the point of it being productive.
Speaker:And so mm-hmm.
Speaker:You know, today's talk with him was certainly about that.
Speaker:Uh, 'cause he wasn't sharp at all, like he's been
Speaker:mm-hmm.
Speaker:So much better than that against us.
Speaker:Um, and he was kinda all over the place and, you know, at 67, 68 pitches,
Speaker:you know, after 10 batters, three and a third and just had to go get 'em.
Speaker:Um, so the good part of that was a guy that, you know, had been hurt
Speaker:and hadn't thrown the ball well, you know, so far in his young career here.
Speaker:You know, just got back all the way healthy and threw
Speaker:the ball real well for us.
Speaker:A couple inner squads right before we started and we dumped him into
Speaker:the, the game and he, he, I thought he was fantastic at Jay Park.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Really good.
Speaker:Kind of electric out there, almost.
Speaker:He hasn't been built up for a number of pitches yet, so.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:You know, he threw, I think, I don't know, ending at two thirds,
Speaker:maybe at 21 time to go get him.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:Um, and you know, that game as it, as it went on again offensively,
Speaker:like we did some, some good things.
Speaker:Same, same type of approach, I thought.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Um, it was a better day to hit.
Speaker:The ball was jumping.
Speaker:Tyler Dallas hits a home run, a double Mavis went off the wall on center field.
Speaker:Um, we had a couple other extra base hits.
Speaker:I thought the guys were in the base as well, and we kind of busted that one open.
Speaker:Uh, and then we're able to use some guys, you know, in the pen that maybe
Speaker:just, you know, hadn't been out there as much and needed to get some work.
Speaker:Um, so that was good.
Speaker:And, you know.
Speaker:10 run rule after seven was nice.
Speaker:When You gotta play a double header.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Save some arms.
Speaker:And we were able to start that second game just, just a tad earlier.
Speaker:Right?
Speaker:Uh, it's hard now.
Speaker:Is that something that, um, that you and and the other coach decide,
Speaker:like kind of before the game
Speaker:deciding to do
Speaker:a doubleheader?
Speaker:I'm always in favor of playing 10 after seven.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I, I just, it's a league role for us.
Speaker:I always wanna play.
Speaker:You know, I, I just think it's, it's, let's say early when it's
Speaker:cold, man, it's nobody be out there down 10 runs in the eighth inning.
Speaker:Like, you know, just, it's just, you don't, it's easy to say, well, we can
Speaker:get some other guys in, but like, what, what are you really doing to them?
Speaker:Like right's not competitive moment.
Speaker:It's, it's a chance for them is all it is.
Speaker:But so yeah.
Speaker:So we get that.
Speaker:We get that w and you know, again, um, up and down the lineup I thought
Speaker:we saw on the batch pretty well.
Speaker:So game two and you win the series and you know, I told the guys, Hey,
Speaker:they sometimes what, oftentimes not sometimes what happens in a, in a three
Speaker:game series, if the first two games aren't close and you won 'em, uh, they
Speaker:saved their better bullpen arms 'cause they didn't need to use them yet.
Speaker:Uh, and so they had their two best guys still down there.
Speaker:And, you know, guys knew it and.
Speaker:You know, we did have the lead.
Speaker:They brought their, the second kid that, the first kid that brought
Speaker:in out the bullpen, I thought was their best guy of the weekend.
Speaker:I mean, he pitched great, you know?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Uh, struck out eight, I think maybe we got two hits.
Speaker:He didn't walk anybody.
Speaker:He was mixing that slider and fastball really well.
Speaker:So you gotta give him credit for that.
Speaker:I just thought we just lost our, our shape and our focus we're up five to two.
Speaker:Um, we had the one inning where we slash and, you know, uh, Evan's
Speaker:got his head down and runs through a stop sign, you know, just didn't
Speaker:pick me up fast enough with no out.
Speaker:We got a chance to have a big inning that inning and we don't, and so it's
Speaker:just a, you know, base on mistake.
Speaker:And then we also made a base on mistake and a knife with Mag making the, the third
Speaker:out a third and, and Stallings coming up.
Speaker:We've been our, one of our hotter guys on the weekend.
Speaker:Those are things that we practice and it can't happen, you know, it did and
Speaker:we gotta learn from it and move on.
Speaker:But I mean, we probably, and again, not taking anything away from them.
Speaker:Uh, we probably lost that second game as much as anything.
Speaker:We dropped a, you know, we didn't, we didn't catch a popup in left
Speaker:field that should have been caught with two outs to let them tie it up.
Speaker:And the, the cool part of that was, oh, and your gets this first
Speaker:college appearance's gotta come in.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You know, uh, and, and he's had to come in there with, you know, second
Speaker:and third and um, or whatever it was first I don't remember what it was.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:But, you know, and, and faced our best hitter, uh, it was our kid
Speaker:and he flipped two good breaking balls in there and got 'em spin
Speaker:off one and popped it up the left.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:We just didn't catch it.
Speaker:We were in a shift and TJ didn't pay enough attention to know
Speaker:where the storage stop was that he wasn't gonna be able to catch it.
Speaker:He took his eyes off it for a second and then couldn't pick
Speaker:it back up with the lights.
Speaker:And to be fair, and this is on me, uh, we haven't been out
Speaker:under the lights very much.
Speaker:It's been so cold at night.
Speaker:Cold.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:We just haven't done it.
Speaker:Um, and so that was a, you know, if you haven't practiced something
Speaker:enough, you can't really get mad at 'em too much when they mess it up.
Speaker:So I always believe that as a coach.
Speaker:So, we'll keep working on that and, you know, we'll, we'll get
Speaker:more popups and fly balls under the lights as we go and, um, we'll,
Speaker:we'll catch that ball the next time.
Speaker:Yeah, I, I was impressed.
Speaker:Really, all weekend with the arms you brought out of the pin.
Speaker:You didn't just bring 'em into easy situations, right.
Speaker:Like, Jayce Park comes in, bases loaded, won out in an early part
Speaker:of the game, we're like, it's not clear who's gonna win that thing.
Speaker:It was well before we had our seven run inning, but he was
Speaker:cool, calm, and collected and just
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:Strike out, fly out, inning over.
Speaker:Like he's done that a thousand times in his life.
Speaker:And I think between him and seeing LP go shut guys down, and even
Speaker:Owen UI coming in, that, that's gotta give you some confidence with
Speaker:your bullpen at least early on.
Speaker:Well, I think those guys and and Johnson had a clean first in Yes.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:As we found out.
Speaker:And, um.
Speaker:He wasn't, wasn't as good the, his second inning, but he's a guy that
Speaker:we're gonna have to depend on as well.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Um, outta that bullpen and some more guys gonna have to step up.
Speaker:I think Ben Ton's got a really good chance to help us.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:A freshman, he is got a really good arm and he didn't get in this weekend, but
Speaker:Chris CTE a big right with a good arm that I think will get in there and help us.
Speaker:Um, I thought, uh, Jackson Ocon pitch.
Speaker:Well,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:Uh,
Speaker:in his first appearance, you know, he threw a bunch of strikes.
Speaker:He gave up some hits, which he's gonna give up some hits.
Speaker:He's around the strike zone a bunch.
Speaker:Um, but he wasn't, you know, by any means phased or, you
Speaker:know, he was very, very into it.
Speaker:So I really like his competitiveness.
Speaker:Yeah, he was, he was sitting around the, what, 92, 93?
Speaker:Pretty consistently when he got out there.
Speaker:And I mean, going, what, three and a third and only throwing about 50 pitches.
Speaker:I That's,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:Pretty solid efficiency with a good fastball.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:He was fine.
Speaker:Um, so that that's what this is about.
Speaker:This, this early season stuff, you know, um, just figuring out what
Speaker:roles and what spaces and shapes to put guys in where they fit the best.
Speaker:Um, I thought overall we did a pretty good job holding runners.
Speaker:You know, we ran a couple timing picks at first base because they were hopping
Speaker:with, uh, Kelly and he picked two guys off, you know, and so that,
Speaker:that worked out well, uh, for us.
Speaker:And I thought Mac guy caught the ball real well in the first games for sure.
Speaker:So that was, that was also helpful.
Speaker:And you know, we did, one of our guys has been playing great for, didn't
Speaker:play, got a couple pinch hits, but he was sick as I found out Saturday Jack.
Speaker:Oh,
Speaker:really been playing well for us.
Speaker:And he, he was just had a stomach bug this weekend, so.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Uh, we couldn't, couldn't get him in there.
Speaker:And I think he would've helped us in that, in that second game.
Speaker:Uh, the double header, you know, because it's another
Speaker:left-handed back, uh, to put there.
Speaker:So, but he'll get back in there this weekend.
Speaker:So we're excited about that.
Speaker:All in all, it's a lot of good things happen.
Speaker:The things that didn't kind of go as well are all fixable, workable things.
Speaker:And that's why the games are your best, you know, teachers right now.
Speaker:Uh, and you just gotta make sure that you focus on the things that you can
Speaker:fix, um, and keep the guys', you know, minds in good spaces and understanding.
Speaker:We got a long way to go and I thought the energy was good.
Speaker:I thought they were into it.
Speaker:Um, I thought Will Johnson played pretty well, not as good as
Speaker:mm-hmm.
Speaker:Has been.
Speaker:Um, he was a little bit jumpy at the plate, but.
Speaker:He, um, he just needs to play.
Speaker:He's one of those kids once again in a rhythm.
Speaker:He's a, he's a really good player, although I
Speaker:would say he looked more relaxed by the third game.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And tj, I thought TJ and Scotty Young mm-hmm.
Speaker:Played like veterans.
Speaker:You know, TJ had a bunch of barrels that, you know, didn't fall.
Speaker:Um, but he also was really good.
Speaker:We, we were very good this weekend.
Speaker:One of our things we tracked that we were not good at last year was scoring
Speaker:a guy from third or less than two outs.
Speaker:Mm.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Uh, we want to be at 60% or better.
Speaker:And we were over 80%, uh, the whole weekend.
Speaker:So we did a really good job.
Speaker:And TJ in particular a couple times, got up and smacked the
Speaker:first pitch ball, you know, sacked eyes, but he hit him awful good.
Speaker:So, um, that's, that's good.
Speaker:Good to see.
Speaker:I also wanna bring up Kellen Davis.
Speaker:I mean, what a, what an awesome performance by him on, uh,
Speaker:the second game in Saturday.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:He is.
Speaker:Got that weird gyro, you know.
Speaker:Uh, I don't, I don't know what you call that pitch.
Speaker:It's, it's like an alien.
Speaker:He, no, he, no one ever knows what it's gonna do.
Speaker:It doesn't do the same thing twice in a row, ever.
Speaker:So, um, it's funny 'cause the, the just, he is a hard guy to
Speaker:hit and he's very competitive.
Speaker:So that was good to see him come through with that role.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And he was pretty yoked up too.
Speaker:I could hear Evan chatting with the dugout and with Kellen when there was
Speaker:a runner on first with that hopping.
Speaker:And I don't know if there's anyone more excited than Evan Holman to see Kellen
Speaker:throw over the first two consecutive innings, get the pickoff, and then
Speaker:punch out the batter right afterwards.
Speaker:I mean, the loudest the dugout got, I heard all weekend was on those two
Speaker:plays coming back in, trying to get guys jacked up to go to the plate.
Speaker:So the energy's there, even though it was, it was pretty
Speaker:chilly at that point, I'll say.
Speaker:It was cold.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:yeah, yeah.
Speaker:No doubt.
Speaker:So we got, we got lots in front of us.
Speaker:I think pitch staff wise.
Speaker:You know, we gotta, we certainly gotta continue to improve.
Speaker:But some of those young arms in particular, you know, are guys
Speaker:that, that Ken and, and I believe will, um, Nick Sulpizio too.
Speaker:You know, he comes in, uh, that game and, you know, the game's not necessarily
Speaker:close, but it's still the middle of the game when, uh, Marcus got hurt.
Speaker:That's never an easy situation to come in as a reliever.
Speaker:You gotta decide, do I wanna finish warming up in a bullpen?
Speaker:Used to be you had to come warm up on the field.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:That was the rule.
Speaker:You get as long as you want, but has to be on the game mat.
Speaker:Now you can declare I want to finish my warmups in the bullpen.
Speaker:And then you got your two and a half minutes once you
Speaker:get on the field, so, huh.
Speaker:Um, he chose, he had been throwing, like he was coming in the game, so he wasn't
Speaker:that far away anyway, so he chose to just come out and finish up out there.
Speaker:And I thought he threw the ball really well.
Speaker:I thought he Great job.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, and his filo wasn't what it has been.
Speaker:But again, it was, you know, by the time he started getting cold
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:He, he seemed like he had good control though.
Speaker:He didn't walk anybody.
Speaker:I think he gave up just like, you know, kind of two hits,
Speaker:but he didn't do anything.
Speaker:But I, I was excited to see him come out and pitch so well, um,
Speaker:you know, kind of after last season where it just wasn't there.
Speaker:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker:Absolutely.
Speaker:That was good to see.
Speaker:Um, so, you know, I thought Connor Schumann did a good
Speaker:job coming in the game.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:And throwing strikes and Chewy's Chewy's had a good fall and a good
Speaker:preseason and, you know, he is throwing those sidearm sinkers now.
Speaker:It's a different look, something you see a lot.
Speaker:And so, you know, he's, he's figured out, you know, as we, we tell the guys,
Speaker:like, everybody wants to throw hard.
Speaker:Some of you guys aren't gonna throw hard, so you gotta figure out a trick.
Speaker:Like you gotta have a thing.
Speaker:You know, Jason Hartline, once he got over trying to throw hard figured out, I can
Speaker:figure out a cutter and nobody hits it.
Speaker:So, you know, you gotta have a thing.
Speaker:And she always figured out that his thing needs to drop a slot a little bit.
Speaker:And, you know, Chuck throw that sinker in there and he, he can throw
Speaker:the sweeper from that slot fine too.
Speaker:So he's a, again, older guy.
Speaker:He is been through a lot, um, hoping that, you know, all those
Speaker:experiences will help him this year.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And we
Speaker:have, and it was great seeing, uh, Cole Langford, uh, get in the game.
Speaker:You know, uh, people might remember we mentioned he had brain surgery
Speaker:back during, uh, last season, so that was his first time.
Speaker:You know, in the game I was talking, I said, Randy to his parents, uh,
Speaker:leaving the game and they were saying it's the first time in like
Speaker:six years they haven't worried about him having a seizure on the mound.
Speaker:I mean, that,
Speaker:that's amazing.
Speaker:It was, it was good to see him out there and he threw the ball fine.
Speaker:He hit the first guy and then.
Speaker:He was fine after that.
Speaker:And, and look, that ain't easy man.
Speaker:You come in there in the ninth inning's, 30 something degrees by that point.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Well the knucklehead walks out there though, with no sleeves
Speaker:on and no undershirt on.
Speaker:Yeah, well he is gotta, he is gotta show the taco meat.
Speaker:And I said, yeah.
Speaker:I said, man, is that the spitting image of getting on Coach Wick's radar?
Speaker:Like what in the world is he?
Speaker:He walked out and I went, what is he doing?
Speaker:You know, it's just like, oh man, that's a come on man for me right there.
Speaker:Like
Speaker:tough, tough guy, country boy.
Speaker:He is gotta
Speaker:show off.
Speaker:Yeah, look at me, look at me is what that is.
Speaker:But he did through good.
Speaker:And we're gonna need him.
Speaker:So hopefully he'll keep that up.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:So we move forward.
Speaker:Uh, you know, this week we've got, uh, Manhattan, the Jasper.
Speaker:Great nickname by the way.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um,
Speaker:couple of good nicknames this week
Speaker:coming in.
Speaker:Uh, yeah.
Speaker:And then what are they?
Speaker:The griffins.
Speaker:The
Speaker:purple.
Speaker:The purple.
Speaker:What are they?
Speaker:The purple eagles.
Speaker:Purple.
Speaker:The
Speaker:purple
Speaker:eagles.
Speaker:Purple eagles.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:The, uh,
Speaker:that's a great one.
Speaker:I didn't know that there were purple eagles.
Speaker:I,
Speaker:there are in Niagara, there
Speaker:are in Buffalo up there,
Speaker:apparently.
Speaker:Apparently.
Speaker:Because
Speaker:they're so cold.
Speaker:Manhattan just got into town.
Speaker:Their, their coach, they were down in Puerto Rico playing in a tournament.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, um, so they're gonna practice tomorrow after we get done.
Speaker:And then of course we play, uh, Wednesday.
Speaker:And then they're, they're staying and playing Norfolk State this weekend.
Speaker:So they're here all week pretty much.
Speaker:And, um, one of their assistant coaches is actually a really good
Speaker:friend of mine, Steve Engler.
Speaker:He coaches up in the, in the Cape Cod League in the summers.
Speaker:Um, so we've had a bunch of guys play for him in the summer,
Speaker:so it'll be nice to see Steve.
Speaker:Uh, that'll be, that'll be fun.
Speaker:Uh, and then, and then Niagara.
Speaker:Um.
Speaker:I actually watched play a little bit yesterday.
Speaker:They were down at Texas State, and so us not having a game, I was
Speaker:flipping through some Sunbelt games, just getting my eyes on some people.
Speaker:And, um, they were, they were playing.
Speaker:And, uh, that was one of those Sunday games where nobody that brought in was
Speaker:throwing strikes, uh, turned it off.
Speaker:Uh, but they, they've got a, you know, they're always a solid club.
Speaker:I mean, for a long time they were one of the better teams up in that area.
Speaker:So again, it's, you know, good competition.
Speaker:We've gotta be ready to play and it's another opportunity to play at home.
Speaker:You know, we got four home games this week and we want to take advantage
Speaker:of all of 'em and, and trying to get better each and every one.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Manhattan played some pretty tough teams down there in Puerto Rico too.
Speaker:I think it was, uh, Indiana State, Seton Hall in Houston.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:And they were competitive in all of those games?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Not, mm-hmm.
Speaker:Not quite the same for Niagara.
Speaker:I mean, I, I've haven't seen Texas State, but I imagine they're pretty
Speaker:good judging by like 13, nothing.
Speaker:11 3 11, nothing.
Speaker:Uh, but you know how that is being on the road, it just makes you
Speaker:hungry to go win the next one.
Speaker:Yep, yep, yep.
Speaker:No doubt.
Speaker:And, um, I had, we got some calls into Texas State just to get some particulars.
Speaker:Uh, that's where when they're play in a conference team, it's
Speaker:nice 'cause they'll share stuff with you, um, to talk about that.
Speaker:But before that, we got a, we gotta play Manhattan and um, we played Manhattan.
Speaker:It was like 2018, 17.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:There was the same year we had a, we had a tournament with
Speaker:Kentucky and Virginia Tech.
Speaker:That was when, um, AJ Reed was with Kentucky and he threw like seven against
Speaker:tech and then he hit like a bomb that hadn't landed yet against us the next day.
Speaker:He was
Speaker:the national player of the week.
Speaker:That week.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:He
Speaker:was, I think he had four or five home runs that weekend.
Speaker:He was phenomenal.
Speaker:And the nicest kid on the planet too.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And got the win on the mound on their Friday.
Speaker:Yeah, I think so.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I do remember that.
Speaker:He's one of those guys.
Speaker:Like, and Gary's a big Astros fan.
Speaker:We talked about this a few weeks ago where he, he was at the Astros,
Speaker:didn't, didn't quite work out.
Speaker:And it's like, I don't know how that guy is amazing at baseball.
Speaker:That tells you how hard the major leagues is.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:He was big lefty hitter who could hit more Uhhuh.
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:He tore it up.
Speaker:Triple player as a pitcher.
Speaker:Only you know, I, Gary Henderson, their old coach was a good friend of mine.
Speaker:I remember him telling me that story.
Speaker:He came there as a pitcher only, they didn't even know he could hit.
Speaker:Geez.
Speaker:He's like, Hey, uh, you take some swings.
Speaker:Sure.
Speaker:Kaboom, Kaboom.
Speaker:Yeah, you're in line.
Speaker:That's great.
Speaker:Hey, you look at all the rest of the guys.
Speaker:You guys think this is so hard, huh?
Speaker:Sometimes that lack of pressure does it, right?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Go there and hack.
Speaker:I remember that.
Speaker:But so it's been a while since we played 'em, but, um, and, and they've got
Speaker:some new coaches and all that stuff.
Speaker:So I don't know.
Speaker:Another coach was saying.
Speaker:We try to, you know, be good hosts for anybody.
Speaker:Like, team come down, man.
Speaker:We're gonna do everything we can to let you do everything that we do that day.
Speaker:If we get to practice on the field, then you, you will, and all those things.
Speaker:I just think that's the right way to do it.
Speaker:And their co coach saying, Hey, if we could get on, we, we,
Speaker:we really don't have a field.
Speaker:Like, I think they drive like 45 minutes or something like that to, to practice and
Speaker:play, uh, because they're in Manhattan.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I was
Speaker:wondering about that.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah, yeah.
Speaker:So we try to do whatever we can to help out on those, those kind.
Speaker:And we want people to come back, so we want treat 'em.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Uh, speaking of treating people, right, Gary, did you have that, uh,
Speaker:image that Finny shared the other day, which was, uh, this is pretty great.
Speaker:So, uh, Finny, talk to us about this a little bit.
Speaker:Are you showing it now?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:It's, it's, you're Harley strong, uh, BP
Speaker:Top.
Speaker:Oh, okay.
Speaker:I only have us on there 'cause I like looking at, oh.
Speaker:Uh,
Speaker:yeah, so Bailey Matela's little brother, Harley's a, a sophomore at Cape Henry.
Speaker:Um, they found out, you know, not too long ago, um, that he had
Speaker:testicular can, has testicular cancer.
Speaker:And so they, they got him in, they, they did surgery and it spread.
Speaker:So they started chemo after that.
Speaker:And Bailey didn't let the team, you know, know about this until, um, you
Speaker:know, late, late January, I think it was.
Speaker:And, you know, he told, told the coaches and then told the team and you, you
Speaker:could see something wasn't quite right when we got back from break with Bailey.
Speaker:And so I think getting that off his chest was helpful.
Speaker:The team immediately made like a video for Harley and Harley's a
Speaker:kid that's grown up in our cages.
Speaker:Yeah, I mean, he's seen him there since.
Speaker:Awesome kid.
Speaker:A little fella.
Speaker:And a heck of a player.
Speaker:I mean, he is a very talented, really,
Speaker:really talented ball
Speaker:player.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Very talented ball player on both hitting
Speaker:and pitching.
Speaker:Really
Speaker:good.
Speaker:Uh, highly recruited for his age.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:You know, highly ranked all those things.
Speaker:None of that matters right now.
Speaker:Right, right.
Speaker:We've got cancer.
Speaker:Um, we, you know, Bailey's a senior.
Speaker:I mean, we've known Bailey since he was, before he was Harley's age, you
Speaker:know, and so we've known that family, Laura, the mom, uh, the grand dude.
Speaker:Uh, it's just a, it's a wonderful, you know, Larchmont, Norfolk, old Dominion
Speaker:family, and we want to be there to support them and Bailey's a part of our family.
Speaker:And so, uh, you know, by proxy, so is Harley.
Speaker:And so I said, well, what if we do this?
Speaker:And it'll create some awareness.
Speaker:Um, you know, it's a good, you know, talking piece and then something
Speaker:that, you know, can, can maybe help some days, cheer Harley up, get
Speaker:'em over the hump, whatever it.
Speaker:Um, and we need to give him one of those jerseys I thought about.
Speaker:I don't really wear my VP top 'cause I'm usually in sweat throwing or something.
Speaker:So I think I'm just gonna give him mine.
Speaker:And, um, the, you know, the feedback we, which is never why you do these
Speaker:things, but the feedback we've got has been what you'd expect.
Speaker:Very heartwarming and, and, and wonderful.
Speaker:And we just hope it, you know, when I, I sent Laura a picture of the jerseys
Speaker:when they came in, um, I don't know, last Wednesday or something like that.
Speaker:And, and also Harley, I sent him a picture and Laura just said, man, this is amazing.
Speaker:Like, he had a rough day today with his chemo and this is exactly
Speaker:the shot in the arm he needed, uh, and, and that kind of thing.
Speaker:So we, we just hope we can be a, a little small piece of his recovery
Speaker:and helping him stay positive.
Speaker:And, um, just, uh, just one, one little thing we can do to,
Speaker:to help support our people.
Speaker:That's fantastic.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Love seeing the support around 'em.
Speaker:Obviously we didn't, we didn't know last week when we were two weeks
Speaker:ago, we filmed with Bailey and them.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:You know, so nothing but good thoughts, prayers, all that good
Speaker:stuff, uh, their way and we'll keep supporting 'em throughout the season.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And we're gonna wear those at home only.
Speaker:Um, so we'll wear our regular BP tops on the road, I think, unless we go
Speaker:on some sort of ridiculous winning streak, which is not that good.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:We
Speaker:in
Speaker:the game.
Speaker:I gotta ask you guys some advice.
Speaker:So you've seen the, the Swinging Lion BP hats.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, and I gotta, we're we're trying to figure out like, should we wear that, uh,
Speaker:with one of our jerseys as a game hat?
Speaker:We were with the Navy.
Speaker:Uh, Wednesday we're gonna wear our new white, just all white.
Speaker:Uh, it says Old Dominion on it.
Speaker:It's just like gray.
Speaker:It's a very nice looking.
Speaker:You, you could wear it with that because it, it, the white
Speaker:is just all White Navy gray.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:The swinging line is just basically Navy and white, so it wouldn't match.
Speaker:Um, I don't know.
Speaker:Should we wear it with the, the Navy top?
Speaker:Yeah, I mean you could wear it with it.
Speaker:Start wearing Wednesday.
Speaker:See how you feel.
Speaker:I, I think you can wear it with the, uh, the Hudson.
Speaker:'cause you still wear a Navy hat with the Hudson anyway.
Speaker:Yeah, yeah, we do.
Speaker:That's right.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker:We do.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um,
Speaker:I'd say just keep throwing 'em in games and see if, like I
Speaker:said, you, when you, when you win wearing it, you keep doing it.
Speaker:See
Speaker:how Get it out.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:They're, they're pretty sick hats.
Speaker:I mean, our, our OD logo is already great to begin with,
Speaker:so that's one
Speaker:thing.
Speaker:Nice thing we have going,
Speaker:they look really good on the OnDeck Circle warmup spots too.
Speaker:I got those in a couple videos this week because I knew the double
Speaker:header wasn't on ES, ESPN plus.
Speaker:Uh, but it, it, it's an awesome logo and it's just cool that it's unique and back.
Speaker:I have a hat somewhere in a closet I'll have to go find before next week that
Speaker:has that logo on it, but I don't know what condition it's in at this point.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Well, I think we probably know Got some pull.
Speaker:We need to get you guys one.
Speaker:So
Speaker:you know, a guy, you know a
Speaker:guy I know a guy, know a guy.
Speaker:So the, um, uh, one thing I was pleased with the hats, um, I will say this.
Speaker:We switched our, uh, their Under Armour hats, which the game
Speaker:makes the hats for Under Armour.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:We switched the, the style of hat in terms of mm-hmm.
Speaker:You know, they have a number of different game games.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:So we switched to a little, it's not wool, but it's, it's a
Speaker:heavier, it's a heavier material.
Speaker:Uh, because our hats were just so light.
Speaker:They were flying off everybody's head.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And it was driving me crazy.
Speaker:Uh, yeah, we, we switched to a little heavier hat and I, I think it's.
Speaker:Already been better.
Speaker:So
Speaker:some of those guys last year needed like a little chin strap for their hat
Speaker:so it wouldn't fly off in the outfield.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:We probably, and now they're, these fit a little bigger, so we gotta
Speaker:place another order and probably get some small, more smaller sizes
Speaker:because we're just about out of those.
Speaker:Everybody, you, everybody usually wears a large or medium,
Speaker:everybody's x extra large like that.
Speaker:So, um, life in the equipment room.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:That's great.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Well, alright, Finny, well we appreciate you joining us always, man.
Speaker:That's,
Speaker:we got an update on the men's hoop score yet You watching?
Speaker:Oh, I don't know.
Speaker:I didn't look.
Speaker:Didn't
Speaker:have it.
Speaker:Sometimes it's afraid to look.
Speaker:Let's see
Speaker:a chicken,
Speaker:huh?
Speaker:Basketball 8 0 9 to go du iss up.
Speaker:63 57. So six point lead, eight to go, uh, Cajuns,
Speaker:Louisiana.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:Louisiana.
Speaker:Alright, well tell the boys Chewy and uh, Jay, stay for
Speaker:me and have fun with them and.
Speaker:We'll see you guys soon.
Speaker:Go Monarchs.
Speaker:Go Mon monarchs, Monarch.
Speaker:Thank you Finny.
Speaker:Alright, see y'all.
Speaker:Thanks
Speaker:Beth.

Speaker:A check that guy out.
Speaker:Yes, we have a new sponsor.
Speaker:If you couldn't tell from the beginning of the episode and that, uh, we're moving,
Speaker:moving up in the world here a little bit.
Speaker:Don't worry, we'll still, we'll still have afterglow.
Speaker:Uh, they've got a watch party coming up there soon.
Speaker:So stay tuned to the du Monarchist socials for that.
Speaker:Uh, and for those of you who are already following our new, uh, Twitter and
Speaker:Instagram accounts at Hudson Homers, I appreciate you hopping on there.
Speaker:We're just trying to give you a little more baseball content
Speaker:without cluttering the other feed.
Speaker:'cause we know there's a lot of other fans on there, uh, but a lot of engagement.
Speaker:Not bad first weekend if Vinny Pasquatino pops up in the replies,
Speaker:so, hey, that's pretty nice.
Speaker:Hey,
Speaker:Vinny, Vinny was trying to watch the game.
Speaker:He was down, down there in Arizona board one night, I guess,
Speaker:yeah, I thought about live streaming, but I thought Eric Bohannon might
Speaker:run back out there and, and hit me if I violated their TV deal.
Speaker:So did not do that.
Speaker:Although I really want to.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Cool.
Speaker:I mean, just live stream yourself reacting to it.
Speaker:Um,
Speaker:nobody wants to see that.
Speaker:There's not a person that wants to see me do that.
Speaker:There you go.
Speaker:Awesome.
Speaker:Well, we got two guys hopping on with us today.
Speaker:We got Connor Schumann and Jayce Park both through on Saturday.
Speaker:Did a great job.
Speaker:Connor Jayce, welcome to the show.
Speaker:Thanks for hopping on with us today.
Speaker:No problem.
Speaker:Thank you for having us.
Speaker:Yep, thank you.
Speaker:So get a series win to start the season.
Speaker:You get two from Quinnipiac.
Speaker:They were pretty scrappy, especially there in that third game, but Ja,
Speaker:what'd you think overall of the, the first weekend back at the Bud?
Speaker:Um, I think as a, as a team, we played collectively pretty well.
Speaker:I mean, besides, I think.
Speaker:Uh, besides that last game that we lost, I think we were, we were, uh,
Speaker:probably overall like, well, well-rounded and I think we played a good series.
Speaker:Just tough playing a double header and just trying to lock in for 18 innings.
Speaker:So I think that la the Saturday was just a, it was a little
Speaker:test early in the season.
Speaker:And Connor, what'd you think?
Speaker:Uh, from the first weekend back at the bud?
Speaker:Uh, first weekend back, I mean, it's always great to be back in the bud.
Speaker:Um, spending the whole last year on the road, it was tough.
Speaker:Um, especially for the young guys never getting to play at home.
Speaker:Um, for me it was just a great experience to be back.
Speaker:Um, I'm glad I got to throw in the opening weekend.
Speaker:I had done that, uh, in my entire five, four or five years here, so it was cool.
Speaker:I mean, it was a good experience.
Speaker:Um, you know, Saturday long day, but you know, Friday, Saturday, we.
Speaker:In first game Saturday, we pretty much dominated through both those
Speaker:games and, you know, people get tired towards the end of the day.
Speaker:But, uh, I mean, it was against a good team, a good opponent.
Speaker:They came out better than I think a lot of people thought they would.
Speaker:Um, but we were able to take advantage of a lot of, you know, mistakes and
Speaker:miscues in those first two games.
Speaker:Um, and it looks pretty promising from here on out.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Uh, so I mean, that's a good point.
Speaker:You know, like Connor, you've played at the Bud before, but
Speaker:Jayce, that's your first time actually having a game at the bud.
Speaker:What was that like for you?
Speaker:Um, it, it kind of didn't feel real at first, like, like that Friday, like I,
Speaker:I'm just so used to playing like the inner squads there and just against my own team.
Speaker:So seeing another team there, it was just kind of, it was weird
Speaker:and it just, I don't know, but I mean, it was, it was really fun.
Speaker:I'm, I'm glad to be back at, at home, but it was, it was a little weird,
Speaker:uh, when they came in on Friday.
Speaker:How'd you guys both, uh, feel about the, the seats in the outfield?
Speaker:What'd y'all think of that?
Speaker:I think if, if they can keep that permanent, they
Speaker:should keep that permanent.
Speaker:'cause I feel like it's a really cool addition.
Speaker:Um, I mean, it's definitely a lot different than having
Speaker:the fans right above you.
Speaker:You know, you can't really heal, hear a whole lot out there,
Speaker:but I'm sure they can hear us.
Speaker:I'm sure we're played plenty loud for them.
Speaker:Um, but I think it's cool.
Speaker:Um, and if they can keep it, yeah, go ahead and keep that.
Speaker:Yeah, I, I agree.
Speaker:Uh, that's a, that's a great addition.
Speaker:Not many like ballparks that we go to have that, uh, outfield seating.
Speaker:So, I mean, if we can pack out when the, when the back gets
Speaker:open, we can pack that out.
Speaker:And then the stands, it'd be, it'd be a pretty cool environment.
Speaker:Yeah, I think Finny said it would be about 4,000 seats if you, if you
Speaker:have that and the seats of the bowl.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Uh, and yeah, I think, I think Connor, I think you're right.
Speaker:I think the fans, because they're not behind you anymore, probably can hear
Speaker:you guys better and hear all the, all the, the nonsense you guys say.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And it kind of takes the pressure aspect of a way.
Speaker:Like, there's people right in front of you just watching you throw, I mean,
Speaker:especially as a pitcher, sometimes it's something you pick up on.
Speaker:Um, and I feel like it takes that element out of it and, you know,
Speaker:you just, you feel pretty free up there and, uh, it feels pretty real.
Speaker:And Jayce, you know, you've got dropped into a pretty tight
Speaker:situation for the first game of the double header on Saturday.
Speaker:One out base is loaded.
Speaker:Uh, you get, get strike out, get the fly out, no damage done.
Speaker:But take us through kind of your experience there, going out to the
Speaker:mall, going into that situation and just how you dialed in to get those outs.
Speaker:Um, so I was, I was warming up, uh, in the bullpen and I was kind of like, out of it.
Speaker:I was kind of just in the zone and I got up to the mound and I just, I
Speaker:didn't know what the situation was.
Speaker:I, and I asked Marin when he, before he walked away, I was like, Hey, can you just
Speaker:like, tell me the situation real quick?
Speaker:Like, I don't, I don't know.
Speaker:But yeah, and then it was bases loaded and I was just, I was pretty pumped up.
Speaker:I kind of don't remember it.
Speaker:I kind of blacked out a little bit.
Speaker:But, uh, yeah, it was, it was a, it was fun.
Speaker:It was really fun.
Speaker:What's that?
Speaker:Like two types of pitches, right?
Speaker:The guys that never know what's happening, the guy that knows every single pitch that
Speaker:they've ever pitched in every situation.
Speaker:So we know which one you are now, Jay, that's, yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And Connor, you come in later in that game, uh, to close out the seventh.
Speaker:Have a, or I'm sorry, you Yes.
Speaker:You're to close out the, the seventh thing, which ended
Speaker:up being the final inning.
Speaker:Uh, you know, no damage done on your end either, you know, what was that experience
Speaker:like for you coming outta the pen?
Speaker:A little bit different situation, but still critical to get that
Speaker:out and hold things together?
Speaker:Yeah, I think, um, you know, especially Patrick going out for that second
Speaker:inning, um, you know, hoping for him just to cruise through that.
Speaker:Um, and you know, I kind of, at that point I put my sweatshirt back on.
Speaker:I was ready to rush on the field and give everybody some high fives.
Speaker:Um, he ran into a little bit of trouble and, you know, pond gives me the, uh,
Speaker:the walkie talkie call and he's like, Hey, you gotta be ready in two batters.
Speaker:So I threw the sweatshirt down, um, and I was running around the whole bullpen
Speaker:because I put my glove away and so I had to run and go find that, picked that up.
Speaker:Got ready real quick.
Speaker:But I mean.
Speaker:That's why I do it.
Speaker:That's why I like being a relief pitcher.
Speaker:You gotta be ready for any moment.
Speaker:Um, so I mean, it was awesome.
Speaker:And uh, you know, I go in and marin's like, all right,
Speaker:base is loaded to no outs.
Speaker:Here you go.
Speaker:I was perfect.
Speaker:So it it was fun.
Speaker:It was, it was, it was also my first time closing out a game like
Speaker:that, even though it was a seven.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So it was, it was good to get that, uh, get that feeling.
Speaker:Pressure
Speaker:pass.
Speaker:I'm glad Finny left.
Speaker:He is not hearing this.
Speaker:We got the one pitcher that doesn't know where his glove is.
Speaker:We got the other one.
Speaker:Doesn't know what the situation is.
Speaker:This is, this is pure bullpen stuff.
Speaker:You guys, this is a real bullpen.
Speaker:I love it.
Speaker:Uh, first, first weekend everybody gets a pass on that.
Speaker:And plus the, the outcome was good.
Speaker:I mean, both you guys shut it down and, and got us to a win, which
Speaker:ended up being, you know, the, the series clinching win 'cause we were
Speaker:losing extras in the third one.
Speaker:So just great outing from both of you and, uh, you know, get the fans
Speaker:into it a little bit there too.
Speaker:I think so.
Speaker:Through some of those spots.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So, Connor, you've had, I mean, you've had quite a career at ODU
Speaker:UI mean, you're in your, like I said, you're in your fifth year.
Speaker:Um, you what, first year you didn't play, you know, red shirted then you,
Speaker:I think you was more of a medical, not playing in your second year, right?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Uh, surgery that year took me out for the year.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:So two years in, hadn't, hadn't been in.
Speaker:Then in your third year, you, I mean, what I'm looking here, was it four games?
Speaker:Yeah, one in a third innings.
Speaker:I only got, you know, what, one out in a game.
Speaker:Uh, real short appearances.
Speaker:And then even last year, uh, 13 appearances, 10.1 innings.
Speaker:I mean, you know, in four years, 11 innings.
Speaker:I mean, what's that been like?
Speaker:You know, you're here, you're working, I mean, I know you're a guy.
Speaker:You're here working hard every day and just to not get to,
Speaker:to a lot of opportunities.
Speaker:How do you stay ready?
Speaker:How do you stay engaged?
Speaker:Yeah, so, you know, the kinda way that I feel about it, you know,
Speaker:after freshman and sophomore year.
Speaker:Um, you know, freshman year I used that just to get a little bit better.
Speaker:Um, just improved during that red shirt period.
Speaker:We had a really good team.
Speaker:Um, staff was plenty deep, so, you know, red shirting was
Speaker:the best option for me there.
Speaker:Um, next year, you know, surgery, you know, is a bummer.
Speaker:I'm out, but, you know, go, go to Cresty that summer, kind of
Speaker:learn more about myself, you know, get that level of baseball.
Speaker:Back in junior year, I was just excited to be on the team and, you know, there's
Speaker:plenty of chances that I could have left and I could have hopped in the portal,
Speaker:but, you know, I feel really loyal to this program and at the same time, exit
Speaker:meetings with Finny and Marin and stuff.
Speaker:You know, they never gave up on, on me, so why should I give up on them?
Speaker:Um, you know, I really like this place and I've got a ton of friends
Speaker:here that I'm gonna be friends with for like, the rest of my life.
Speaker:And, you know, I'm working every year.
Speaker:Last year I got a lot more opportunities, a lot more chances.
Speaker:So, you know, the way I look at it can only go up from here.
Speaker:Um, you know, I'm excited to just keep working and I'm throwing in a different
Speaker:slot with a lot of new pitches and makes it really uncomfortable for hitters now.
Speaker:So I feel like, you know, I, you know, I got a really good shot
Speaker:to make an impact and you know, I just like this place so much.
Speaker:You know, why leave?
Speaker:Now, because you had that medical year, are you, are you gonna be
Speaker:eligible for another year after this?
Speaker:Yeah, technically I am.
Speaker:Uh, I mean, I, I would have a six year, I have to apply for it, you
Speaker:know, but that's, that's just one of those things where it's like, it's
Speaker:gonna be a last minute decision, you know, do I really wanna do that?
Speaker:You know, should I do that?
Speaker:But, you know, I'm already 23, so I gotta get away on my, I work
Speaker:on that degree.
Speaker:I'm just saying
Speaker:you're still
Speaker:working on that, that master's, you
Speaker:know, Dr. Schumann?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Brett
Speaker:Smith.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Well, Smitty had another, an extra year on me, so, I mean, I was in
Speaker:sixth grade when he was a freshman in college, so that was, uh, wow.
Speaker:That was a culture shock once I got in here.
Speaker:Wow.
Speaker:Wow.
Speaker:And you know, Jay, obviously your second year at the program, very odd
Speaker:year last year, not playing at home, having to come into weird spots and mid
Speaker:weird midweeks and things like that.
Speaker:Uh, just what's your, what has your off season been like and then how,
Speaker:how are you seeing things a little bit differently now in your second year?
Speaker:Um, I think the, the first year is kind of like a, especially, I mean, for
Speaker:me it was kind of a learning lesson.
Speaker:Like I had, I had a lot to learn and, uh, I took a lot of stuff from last season
Speaker:and, and through the off season, I, I still continued to work hard and just kind
Speaker:of fix like the mental side of things.
Speaker:Uh, and, um, I mean, for me, really it was just the mental side of, of
Speaker:baseball that was really like holding me back from being who I really am.
Speaker:So I, I think that, that off season just still, uh, staying in the weight
Speaker:room still, um, you know, just doing all the stuff that I would usually do.
Speaker:But, um, yeah, I think just locking it on the mental side, this off
Speaker:season was, was really big for me and it just, it kinda, uh, didn't
Speaker:sit right with me that last season.
Speaker:I just.
Speaker:I didn't feel like I did anything to help my team win.
Speaker:So I, I wanted to, I I needed to make sure I changed that for the season.
Speaker:So,
Speaker:and you had a bit of a a, an injury last year too, didn't you?
Speaker:It was like a cut on your hand, I think pretty close to the season, and
Speaker:it just,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I cut my pointer finger, uh, couple I think during the preseason and,
Speaker:and that kind of set me back a little bit, but, you know, I just kind
Speaker:of had to work through it pitch,
Speaker:right?
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So I, I cut it and then, uh, I tried to throw, which was pretty stupid, and I, I
Speaker:recut it open and it made it even deeper.
Speaker:So then that set me back a little bit and I was stuck throwing changeups for I
Speaker:think four weeks, which wasn't fun at all.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:So there you go.
Speaker:So that's part of the mental lessons too, is like when they tell you
Speaker:to not throw, just don't listen.
Speaker:And so there you go.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah, Connor, uh, coach Finny was talking earlier about some guys that
Speaker:have kind of changed a little bit of their approach on the Mount, whether
Speaker:it's throwing a different pitch, different arm angle, things like that.
Speaker:You know, what, what kind of adjustments did you make this off season, maybe
Speaker:the last couple of off seasons to kind of help you become a better pitcher?
Speaker:Yeah, so the whole side arm, you know, subby action, um, it kinda started in
Speaker:a bullpen in the key dog and rhino was like, Hey, you know, drop down, drop
Speaker:down, uh, your slot and, you know, throw a fastball and see what happens.
Speaker:And I threw it and it was, it held the same velo as the
Speaker:how I was throwing over top.
Speaker:And the movement was really good.
Speaker:And, you know, we started playing around with sinkers in game from
Speaker:that slot, and I would mix slots, I would go over the top and then
Speaker:kind of that subby sidearm action.
Speaker:And, uh, that sinker really seemed to play well.
Speaker:And so right after the, uh, the fall ended up.
Speaker:Um, me and, uh, Mar me and Marin had a meeting and he was like, Hey, let's
Speaker:just, let's just drop it down full time, you know, see what happens.
Speaker:And I was able to manipulate the ball a lot better, throwing
Speaker:sinker change up and slider.
Speaker:Now, uh, I never was able to throw a change up, you know, but being
Speaker:able to utilize that tool and it feels pretty natural to me.
Speaker:So utilizing a natural tool, um, it's really benefited me in the
Speaker:way that I can approach hitters and the way I can attack hitters.
Speaker:And it's uncomfortable.
Speaker:Like I'm throwing all the way from the first base side.
Speaker:Um, you know, after facing a lot of lefties, you know, I kind of ask them
Speaker:to give feedback and they're like, yeah, well, we can't even really see the ball.
Speaker:And when it's running right back into 'em, it's, it's a, it's a hard thing to hit.
Speaker:Um, so I'm excited about it and I'm still learning.
Speaker:It started it really in December for the most part.
Speaker:Um, so the more comfortable I get with it, I, I think it's just on the up and up.
Speaker:You're gonna have some fun videos of left-handed batters throughout
Speaker:the course of the season.
Speaker:'cause that that thing's gotta be terrifying to be in the
Speaker:left-handed batterers box for that.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:That's the goal.
Speaker:Uh, so both of you tell, I mean, since we guys here for a minute,
Speaker:tell, tell us a little bit about how you ended up at Old Dominion.
Speaker:Um, you know, I mean, Jayce, you're from up around Philadelphia, you know,
Speaker:Connor, you're from, uh, around Richmond Midlothian and around Richmond area,
Speaker:you know, uh, and then Connor, when what, you can also tell us why the
Speaker:seven five seven's better than 8 0 4.
Speaker:I'm sure you convert now.
Speaker:So, for me, um, my recruiting process, it, it actually didn't really last that long.
Speaker:Um, luckily I was old enough to get in before COVID.
Speaker:Um, so I threw an tournament down in Georgia.
Speaker:Um, a lot of college coaches down there.
Speaker:It was one of the, um, it wasn't the perfect game.
Speaker:It was a PBR event.
Speaker:And, you know, um, that's where Marin first saw me.
Speaker:He gave me a few calls and he was like, Hey, let's get you down here for a visit.
Speaker:Hopped on down here, and my first visit and first offer, and I just
Speaker:jumped on it right away, you know, after we went through all the,
Speaker:the campus and the whole tour.
Speaker:And I just loved it.
Speaker:It's close enough to home.
Speaker:Um, and, you know, that experience with Marin Marin's really good at talking.
Speaker:And, uh, he kinda, he kinda swayed my, my decisions into most of that.
Speaker:But th this was kind my first choice.
Speaker:And the difference between 7, 5 7 and 8 0 4 is just pretty much
Speaker:8 0 4 doesn't have any beaches.
Speaker:And I, I like being down here in the beach and during the summer it's warm
Speaker:and I can go down there all the time.
Speaker:Um, but other than that, you know, 8 0 4 is still still my stomping
Speaker:grounds and I love going back there.
Speaker:So I'm a little torn.
Speaker:I'm a little 50 50 now, but it's a
Speaker:nice place to visit.
Speaker:Yeah, it, it's, it's a, it's a nice time to visit, uh, you know, over
Speaker:the summer when I go back home.
Speaker:But, you know, I think the longer I stay down here, I might start leaning into
Speaker:staying down here for a little bit longer.
Speaker:There we go.
Speaker:We got one.
Speaker:Yeah, we technically, I have two.
Speaker:I've lived in both.
Speaker:And I'll tell you, I, I'm 7, 5, 7 all the way.
Speaker:If all things were equal and I could do it, I would be down there, believe me.
Speaker:Nice, nice.
Speaker:So, Ja, run us through your recruiting story here from a couple years ago.
Speaker:Um, so I was kind of like a, I was a late bloomer, so kind of at the
Speaker:end of my senior year I started to, to get pretty good and started to
Speaker:hop on a couple of people's radars.
Speaker:And not really until I went to Jupiter, which was like late of senior year, and
Speaker:I threw in one of the, uh, scrimmages before the tournament even started.
Speaker:Um, and Fineman, who, who was not here now, he actually just.
Speaker:Came across me and he was just watching games and he saw me and, uh, I guess
Speaker:he recommended me to, to Marin.
Speaker:And I didn't, I didn't hear from them until maybe like two weeks after
Speaker:the tournament, but it was, I don't know, I, it was just say I'm blessed
Speaker:that, like, that act that happened.
Speaker:And he came across me just randomly and he was like, yeah, like, I want that guy.
Speaker:But, uh, yeah.
Speaker:And then Marin, he reached out and like Shu said, he, he's very, very
Speaker:good at his job and he is very good at, at getting people to come here.
Speaker:Um, and I, I, I really liked him and as soon as I, I got to campus, it
Speaker:just, it kind of reminded me of back home of Philly, like the city and,
Speaker:um, like the row, like the row home houses and, and, and stuff like that.
Speaker:And plus we were near the beach and I don't know, the environment
Speaker:seemed, seemed very great and I just, I just wanted to be a part of it.
Speaker:That's awesome.
Speaker:And yes, Mike can, I think Mike can get anyone to commit.
Speaker:I think at this point.
Speaker:He's, uh, he's pretty, pretty solid at that.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Uh, well one thing I think mainly 'cause I wasn't paying attention with, uh, the
Speaker:chatter that was going on in the left field stands and, and other things like
Speaker:that, but, uh, intro songs for you all.
Speaker:Connor, I'll start with you.
Speaker:What's your out of the bullpen song that you've got for this year?
Speaker:Um, mine is Fortunate Son, um, by Creedence Clearwater Revival.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I've had that for three, three years now.
Speaker:And, you know, I felt like it, it was perfect at first.
Speaker:I just liked the song, you know, and then the more I listened to it,
Speaker:you know, I felt like, you know, I haven't been the most fortunate
Speaker:player through my college career.
Speaker:So I feel like that kind of fits, fits me as a person.
Speaker:And, you know, I, I'm gonna ride with that song until, until I'm done.
Speaker:I bet you that's one of Finny's favorites.
Speaker:I bet you when he sees the list he's like, oh yeah, there's a good one.
Speaker:Yeah, that, and Scotty was Southern Knight, probably.
Speaker:I think I saw Finny dancing a couple times with that one.
Speaker:Yeah, that was a good one too.
Speaker:And Jayce, what about you?
Speaker:Uh, mine is, uh, it's Delta Dawn.
Speaker:Uh, I don't know, not really any backstory behind it, but I just, I don't know.
Speaker:I heard it and I was like, I think this would be, would be
Speaker:sick for, for a walkout song.
Speaker:And it's a little slow.
Speaker:It's not really like fast paced, but I don't know.
Speaker:I, I like it, so.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Well it works well.
Speaker:It gets you in the right space.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Oh
Speaker:man.
Speaker:All right guys, well, we, we appreciate you joining us.
Speaker:Um, you know, obviously Connor been a blast having you here all these years
Speaker:and, and listen, I'm hoping for year six, I hope you, you, you make that choice.
Speaker:If you don't, that's great.
Speaker:We, you know, we enjoyed having you and, and Jayce you know, obviously
Speaker:got this year and a few more man.
Speaker:And you're both just good guys and I always get enjoy getting to watch you
Speaker:getting to hang out and see you, man.
Speaker:Yeah, thank you for having us.
Speaker:Yeah, absolutely.
Speaker:It's fun.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Thank you guys.
Speaker:We'll see you Wednesday and then all weekend.
Speaker:So Connor, Jayce, have a good rest of your night.
Speaker:You too.
Speaker:Thank you.
Speaker:Thanks guys.
Speaker:All good kids.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Awesome.
Speaker:Talking to them both.
Speaker:I mean, great.
Speaker:Just, I was just so happy to see both of 'em come out and,
Speaker:and do well, uh, this weekend.
Speaker:And you know, that's, if you, if you followed along for anything for the
Speaker:Sunbelt tournament the last couple years, the more arms you have, the
Speaker:longer you last in that tournament.
Speaker:And we had some guys show up this weekend that maybe we
Speaker:were, might be good, might not.
Speaker:We'll see.
Speaker:But a lot of guys stepped up in a big way on the mouth.
Speaker:No meltdown innings this weekend.
Speaker:Not a one.
Speaker:No, no.
Speaker:Like I said, uh, you know, Patrick had a little bit of, Johnson had
Speaker:a little bit of trouble there, but again, you know, it's like 30 degrees.
Speaker:Like I can't use, it's hard to even judge.
Speaker:I mean, there was one, uh, at the end of the game, uh, yesterday, the Quinnipiac
Speaker:third baseman dropped a fly ball.
Speaker:And I'm like, it's probably 'cause his glove was a block of ice.
Speaker:Like, it's just like a certain point.
Speaker:It's just like, I mean, I, I think I went, I went home Friday night
Speaker:and went to bed at like nine o'clock because I was, you know, your body
Speaker:spends the whole day trying to not die.
Speaker:Like I was exhausted.
Speaker:So I don't know that they're actually out there playing.
Speaker:Uh, yeah.
Speaker:Yeah,
Speaker:trying to stay alert.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:But you're right.
Speaker:Every, every year when people ask like, how's the team gonna be this year?
Speaker:I'm like, we'll see how the pitching does it.
Speaker:That's really what it's about.
Speaker:You know, you can, if you pitch really, really well.
Speaker:I mean, Southern miss that a few times and they had like not great lineups,
Speaker:but had phenomenal pitching staffs and they played really well in one
Speaker:tournaments and, and got in the regionals.
Speaker:Uh, so yeah, if your pitching is good and then your hitting is also good,
Speaker:which, you know, we got a, a shot for both of those to be true this year.
Speaker:Yeah, I mean, I think we saw up and down the lineup, there's some guys
Speaker:that can hit, um, you know, kind of, kind of fell apart a little bit, the
Speaker:second game of the double header.
Speaker:But, you know, what's kind of missed when we don't have the ESPN plus broadcast?
Speaker:You're just looking at the live stats or tweets is we were still
Speaker:hitting the ball very hard.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I mean, I don't know.
Speaker:TJ Aiken probably had three or four Adam balls that Yeah.
Speaker:You know, exa vilo of 95 plus just right at somebody.
Speaker:Uh, even the, the last bat of the game in the second game of the double
Speaker:header, Evan Holman squared, one up to go opposite field, and it just,
Speaker:they, he hit right into the shift.
Speaker:Otherwise that gets down and the game is tied.
Speaker:And,
Speaker:oh, there
Speaker:were, there were several in like the
Speaker:eighth, eighth, ninth, and 10th innings that were like, which frozen ropes.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:They were, they were those hard line drives.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, speaking of our, our hitter, you got, you got our graphic with
Speaker:our, uh, our players of the week.
Speaker:I do.
Speaker:Can't forget, there we go.
Speaker:Players of the week.
Speaker:Players of the week, Kellen Davis, obviously.
Speaker:Uh, which, uh, let me, I had it right in front of me where it says Kellen
Speaker:had what, two and a third innings?
Speaker:Uh, no, that screen.
Speaker:Uh, two and a third innings scoreless, right?
Speaker:Uh, one hit, one walk, four strikeouts.
Speaker:Just absolute dog.
Speaker:I mean, this guy has been a huge part of the bullpen.
Speaker:Again, just a lot like, uh, Connor, he's had a, he's in his fifth year and he's,
Speaker:you know, had more success to this point, but it took him a while to get there too.
Speaker:Uh, so again, great to see Kellen doing all that.
Speaker:And then, uh, Zach late with, you know, picking up right
Speaker:where he left off last year.
Speaker:I mean, we had, he was our, our player of the year, the
Speaker:hitter of the year for the team.
Speaker:Um, he was what, seven for 12?
Speaker:Two doubles.
Speaker:Uh, nine rbis, two run, scored a couple of walks.
Speaker:I mean, so was that 5 83?
Speaker:Average 1350 OPS for the weekend.
Speaker:Uh, you know, again, just right where he left off.
Speaker:And, and as Kenny pointed out, you had kind of a bro broken handmaid
Speaker:bone in his hand last year.
Speaker:So he may actually be better this year, which is shocking.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I mean, drove in five runs there that Friday game, like really set the tone
Speaker:for us driving in runs, uh, Friday the wind was kind of blowing in so it, or
Speaker:I guess it was blowing kind of across the field from left field over to Right.
Speaker:So I think there, he had at least one that probably would've been a home
Speaker:run if we would've had the mm-hmm.
Speaker:Wind we had for the first game Saturday, which is blowing
Speaker:kind of out to right center.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, yeah, he looked good.
Speaker:I, I will say it was, it was not super easy to pick the
Speaker:hitter of the week this week.
Speaker:I mean, Scotty Young has a great outing, was he was a five for 10 with two doubles.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:You know, Mav Stallings, he was six for 11 Stallings.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, yeah, he, he got hit by a pitch twice that did not feel good, I
Speaker:promise you, on those cold days.
Speaker:Uh, but Fra Morales, um, Mac Dye and I think CJ played
Speaker:really well, hit well cash.
Speaker:JI
Speaker:mean, tj, like I said, had a bunch of production.
Speaker:I mean, when the team hits three 80 with a 9 91 OPS for three
Speaker:games, you're doing pretty well.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah, they, they did well.
Speaker:Um, so it was tough and tough on the pitching too.
Speaker:I mean, Kuski, I think he looked really good for his first out here.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Like to get five in February is tough to do as a starter.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Kuski and Sulp, PIO and, and Park, they were all in the conversation
Speaker:that, you know, we, Gary and I kind of, we put our list in some weeks.
Speaker:It's easy, which is, it's either a guy was amazing or everyone kind
Speaker:of sucked except that one guy.
Speaker:And, uh, it's much better when we have these weeks where it's like, man, a
Speaker:lot of guys were really good this week.
Speaker:You know, you just, okay, these guys were maybe just a little bit better.
Speaker:Um, so yeah, we like doing this every week.
Speaker:It's fun to, it's, it's good to point out the guys who are doing great.
Speaker:Yeah, and we'll be, uh, sharing those on our social media channels for Hudson
Speaker:Homers on Monday, right before we record.
Speaker:Um, also feel free to use those channels if you're thinking of
Speaker:a question during the game that you want us to ask Coach fitting.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Great platform to do that.
Speaker:If you're shy, our dms are open.
Speaker:You can slide right in there with your questions.
Speaker:Just tell me if you do or do not want me to say your name.
Speaker:I know some of the questions are, uh, a little, little interesting sometimes.
Speaker:Uh, but Wednesday, Manhattan will be in Norfolk.
Speaker:Guys.
Speaker:They're already there.
Speaker:I'll be playing.
Speaker:That game is on ESPN plus.
Speaker:I don't know which games this weekend are on ESPN Plus yet It
Speaker:is not indicated on the schedule.
Speaker:Don't wanna put anything out there.
Speaker:Um, obviously it's the weird time of year, they can only
Speaker:broadcast one thing at a time.
Speaker:So Saturday basketball, double header, conference game, gotta put those on.
Speaker:I'm not sure what else is, is out there, but, um, we're getting, is
Speaker:that typically just for, uh, the games that are on campus?
Speaker:I mean, we might have the, yes.
Speaker:Lacrosse has a game Saturday, I think at six, so that possibly
Speaker:could be an interference with Saturday, but theoretically Friday
Speaker:and Sunday shouldn't be a problem.
Speaker:Well, I guess, well, like I said, we'll see, I don't know.
Speaker:We don't, I don't make the schedule, but Yeah, hopefully, hopefully they're
Speaker:gonna put 'em on and if, and, you know, either way get, get out to
Speaker:the bud, uh, you know, if you can.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And obviously everyone can, some folks are, you have plenty of, plenty of, uh,
Speaker:family and, and friends and all that can't make it, uh, to Norfolk, which is fair.
Speaker:But if you can.
Speaker:To the park.
Speaker:Yeah, definitely.
Speaker:And, and check out that outfield.
Speaker:It's nice back behind those bleachers.
Speaker:The big concession area with multiple places to go purchase it.
Speaker:There were no long lines, nothing like that.
Speaker:It is cashless to make sure you got your cards with you.
Speaker:You can go inside in the gym, jarret to the bathroom.
Speaker:You don't have to go use a porta potty.
Speaker:You can use the, the, the volleyball bathrooms.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Nice.
Speaker:Or you can use the Porta johns too, if you just wanna run down between innings.
Speaker:Uh,
Speaker:yeah, that's,
Speaker:yeah.
Speaker:They got it.
Speaker:They got it all there.
Speaker:But like, it, it's very well done.
Speaker:The, the wrappings make it feel like it's permanent.
Speaker:Uh, it creates just kind of some good vibes, uh, especially kind of
Speaker:between the two seating sections where you got a lot of visiting fans
Speaker:and the one in right center gets, gets some fun yelling back and forth.
Speaker:Uh, there was a drop fly ball down the left field line on Friday,
Speaker:and the fans definitely let that guy know what he did wrong.
Speaker:Um, so it, it's fun.
Speaker:It's a good time.
Speaker:Um, you just can't recommend enough.
Speaker:Go out there, find you a seat.
Speaker:You like, uh, because there's, there's plenty of, plenty of good spots there.
Speaker:I was asking my parents that I was like, where you got, because you
Speaker:know, they have their one spot.
Speaker:They always like to sit, you know, kind of looking right down the first baseline.
Speaker:Uh, and so I was like, what's your spot in the outfield?
Speaker:Like, we don't know.
Speaker:I think they sat toward the top.
Speaker:That was all they want.
Speaker:That was what mom really wanted.
Speaker:So, who knows?
Speaker:Mom's cookies, uh, remain undefeated.
Speaker:We had brought a bunch of cookies out Friday for the boys.
Speaker:Uh, they dropped 15 runs for her, so she was happy.
Speaker:Well, we're
Speaker:gonna give her, she gave, she, she did give, uh, TJ a big, uh, bag of gummies.
Speaker:Uh, I thought she was like, I got some gummies for tj.
Speaker:I thought she'd have like a couple.
Speaker:She gave me like a giant Ziploc bag full.
Speaker:Um, so, you know, gotta gotta love mom.
Speaker:She takes care
Speaker:of, oh yeah.
Speaker:She's gonna be working like the Ebler ELs here soon, if that, uh,
Speaker:undefeated Street keeps going, honestly.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Just gonna need to hire some assistants, uh, in the kitchen to get those.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:Um, yeah.
Speaker:Great, great stuff.
Speaker:I think like, the only other thing I wanted to, to chat
Speaker:through is like defensively.
Speaker:Uh, we got, we got some work to do there.
Speaker:There were a lot of errors, especially on Saturday.
Speaker:Um, those are things that come with early in the season.
Speaker:They cash Jay at third.
Speaker:He had two web gyms for sure.
Speaker:Uh, he also had a couple errors.
Speaker:Um, so he cleaned those things up, but he showed why he started a third.
Speaker:I mean, that, that slow roller down the line that he was able to pick up.
Speaker:And Chuck the first, you got a great shot of the throw.
Speaker:The first, uh, he's, he, he hit the ball well too, aside from the, the last game.
Speaker:So a lot of, lot to like there at third.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:And, and ka and you know, I, we talked to him, I think at the, the banquet.
Speaker:I will, I think we'll definitely have him on here again at
Speaker:some point during the year.
Speaker:'cause just a great kid to talk to.
Speaker:Um, he was saying this first time, this is his fifth year playing college.
Speaker:First time he ever gotta play at home an opening weekend.
Speaker:They were always on the road.
Speaker:'cause wherever he was playing was too cold.
Speaker:Um, but yeah, I, you're right.
Speaker:I mean, just a lot of it is early season, you know, number one, you're
Speaker:not in those game rep situations.
Speaker:Number two, uh, I think you're a little too amped up 'cause
Speaker:it's a for opening weekend.
Speaker:And then number three, it's cold and it's hard to stay and focus in perfect mode.
Speaker:Um, and maybe number four, they're college kids.
Speaker:Some mistakes are gonna happen here and there, but yeah, I, I, you're right.
Speaker:That was, if you're gonna take one thing away, I think Yeah.
Speaker:The, the, the focus, right?
Speaker:I mean, the focus is where the defensive errors are coming from.
Speaker:The focus is where the, the hitting, um.
Speaker:The hitting focus was not there for the second game Saturday.
Speaker:So I think that's what it comes down to, is just, Hey, lock in.
Speaker:We're here.
Speaker:You wanna be a good team and win every game.
Speaker:Like realistically, they, they should have come outta this weekend with a sweep.
Speaker:I think we all kind of know that.
Speaker:And, and so you can say, you know, Hey, the reason we didn't is because
Speaker:we didn't lock in and didn't focus.
Speaker:Right.
Speaker:Get, get yourself locked in is the kids say
Speaker:yes.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:I think six seven.
Speaker:So, uh, I think that's finally phased out because I said it enough to my 16-year-old
Speaker:niece that it's not cool anymore.
Speaker:So you're welcome America for that one.
Speaker:Uh, yeah.
Speaker:But no, the, I I just, I know some guys pressing a little bit the end
Speaker:at the plate in those later innings, chasing a lot of fastballs up in a way.
Speaker:Mm-hmm.
Speaker:Uh, and swinging through 'em.
Speaker:There was a couple strikeouts like that, but I'm, I don't hate that
Speaker:as much as what we saw last year with guys freezing on strike three.
Speaker:Yes.
Speaker:And going back without taking the bat off their shoulder.
Speaker:So I'll take, you know, if you're gonna occasionally swing at one up in a away,
Speaker:uh, 'cause you know half of those, you're gonna go putting the seats anyhow.
Speaker:Yeah, I think I only saw, there was only like maybe once or twice where I was
Speaker:like, ah, you can't watch Strike three.
Speaker:Um, and one of 'em was, I think I, I don't wanna call him out, but I think
Speaker:it was Nick Felton, you know, he was freshman, like a second at bat ever.
Speaker:Maybe he's third at bat.
Speaker:Um, you know, it's like, hey, you gotta know.
Speaker:It's like it's too close.
Speaker:Um, and again, he's learning that, and not that to say that plenty
Speaker:of other guys don't do it too.
Speaker:Uh, but yeah, there were a lot of, a lot of really good at bats.
Speaker:Like you said, we didn't, you know, we, I think we still struck out plenty.
Speaker:I mean, what do we have?
Speaker:We still had, still had 32 strikeouts on the weekends, so
Speaker:you're talking about over 10 a game.
Speaker:Um, but that's just kind of modern baseball that I don't feel like a lot
Speaker:of 'em weren't like bad strikeouts, you know, it's just like, Hey, we
Speaker:struck out, you know, it happens.
Speaker:You were, you were trying.
Speaker:They were, they were throwing better than you think.
Speaker:There's also a lot of wind.
Speaker:They were, yeah, of course.
Speaker:The cold, poor Scottie, I don't know.
Speaker:He, he hit like a q shot down the right field line for a double and I saw him
Speaker:shaking his hands the rest of the game.
Speaker:So I know that one did not, did not feel great.
Speaker:Um, and you know, we're, we're not gonna sit here and bash the umpires,
Speaker:I think, I don't think they were a big factor at all this weekend.
Speaker:But, uh, leader Cola behind the plate for game two of the double
Speaker:header had a varying strike zone at times, as I heard from the dugout.
Speaker:Yeah, no, yeah.
Speaker:You pointed out the, uh, the umpire for that game looked a lot
Speaker:like Fargo from Super Coopers.
Speaker:Oh.
Speaker:Which dead on dead.
Speaker:The second you said it, I was like, oh, okay.
Speaker:I was trying to think, 'cause I saw him really like guy's, an interesting
Speaker:looking guy and yeah, he did look like, uh, gimme a say Car ramrod.
Speaker:Come on.
Speaker:Say car ramrod.
Speaker:Um, but yeah, so you're, and you're right.
Speaker:I mean that's, you know, you, especially these early ones, you always get.
Speaker:Mixed bag and umpires.
Speaker:But in general, you know, they weren't too bad.
Speaker:It wasn't anything where it was like, man, you gotta stop this.
Speaker:You're ruining the game.
Speaker:So that's, that's a nice thing you say about umpires.
Speaker:Yeah, they're, they're tuning up as well.
Speaker:It was a Sunbelt, uh, umpire.
Speaker:So hopefully we see them again.
Speaker:Okay.
Speaker:Um, if we see his name on a box score, we'll let you know.
Speaker:You can get your littering in best up, Vermont State push roll
Speaker:uniform on or something for em.
Speaker:Um, yeah.
Speaker:Ow.
Speaker:But that's the, that's the best way to, to end it here today.
Speaker:But appreciate everyone listening.
Speaker:Appreciate everyone that came up to us at the games and chatted with us for a while.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Um, you know, I know I'll be back down there for at least Friday, Saturday, keep
Speaker:fingers crossed on, on all the weather that's coming through and it'll be mm-hmm.
Speaker:Watching just like everyone else on ESPN plus Wednesday.
Speaker:Unfortunately, I won't be able to get down there for that one.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Well, I'll be there Wednesday.
Speaker:I, I'll be there all weekend and, uh, looking forward to it.
Speaker:It is nice when you're leaving, you kinda walk through and you can see everybody.
Speaker:It's kind of, everybody's in a central place that, that is nice.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:It's, it's a good setup.
Speaker:So definitely make some plans to get to the bud.
Speaker:Uh, we've got a good team this year.
Speaker:We got a fun place to come watch the games at home.
Speaker:Uh, no excuse and thank you to everyone that came out Friday, Saturday.
Speaker:Man, those crowds were awesome and y'all were into it engaged and it was the
Speaker:ninth inning of the second game of the double header and I looked to left field
Speaker:and it was still more than 50% full.
Speaker:And that is,
Speaker:yeah,
Speaker:that's awesome.
Speaker:Pretty
Speaker:great.
Speaker:That deserves some recognition.
Speaker:That's commitment.
Speaker:That's the kind of thing that, you know, we have the fans, we, ODU, we
Speaker:know we support the basketball even when they're not doing great, so we
Speaker:can come out and support the baseball.
Speaker:I know it's, uh, it's not inside.
Speaker:It's a little cooler sometimes, but we can put some layers on.
Speaker:It's fun.
Speaker:Uh, so yeah, we love it.
Speaker:We love to see it.
Speaker:Yep.
Speaker:And uh, we do have a final in the ODU men's basketball.
Speaker:They beat Louisiana 83 72, so they end the season with, uh, back to back home.
Speaker:Wins.
Speaker:Pretty convincing wins.
Speaker:Uh, also shout out men's tennis season.
Speaker:They four games.
Speaker:Oh yeah, they just into their home season, I guess last uniform.
Speaker:Oh yeah.
Speaker:Men's tennis.
Speaker:Yeah.
Speaker:Men's tennis Friday, uh, goes down to the very last singles match and
Speaker:they get a win over Virginia Tech.
Speaker:It's like a four hour match, wasn't it?
Speaker:Uh, it was nuts.
Speaker:Like I was, I kept, I went over there for a little bit, then I was watching
Speaker:the live stats the rest of the night.
Speaker:I don't think I've ever been that engaged on, uh, attendance, live stats in a while.
Speaker:But yeah, congrats to them.
Speaker:Great.
Speaker:Great win on Friday.
Speaker:Um, yeah, but appreciate everyone tuning in.
Speaker:This is fun.
Speaker:Uh, definitely hop on our new socials.
Speaker:If you have not checked that out, create your Instagram and Twitter accounts.
Speaker:If I can do an Instagram account, anybody can trust me terrible at that thing.
Speaker:Uh, yes.
Speaker:But thank you for tuning in.
Speaker:And go Monarchs.
Speaker:Go Monarchs.
