“Escapism is fine up until a point where it turns into avoidance.”
One of the leading voices in sobriety Millie Gooch joins The Joyful Drinker to share her personal journey of quitting alcohol for good. Founder of the Sober Girls Society and the author behind the Sober Girls Society Handbook published in 2021, Millie’s story is proof that life after alcohol doesn’t have to be boring.
From becoming entrenched in the boozy nightlife of student culture at University through to the normalised day-drinking of working in PR and journalism, Millie describes her break from the bottle and the biggest positive changes to her productivity, mental and physical health ever since.
In this episode, Millie talks openly and honestly about the lows of getting blackout drunk and going to work hungover; and the positive reaffirming steps that she took to overcame the self-imposed stigma of not wanting to be seen as the boring sober one in her peer groups.
