CB and Gary recap and SBC series win and a week with two walk off victories. Brody Connors and Maddox Jack hop on to tell their ODU story.

Transcripts

Speaker:

This episode is brought to you by the Old Dominion Athletic Foundation.

Speaker:

Because of you, we create winners in the classroom in

Speaker:

athletic competition and in life.

Speaker:

Become a member today.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

What's up, Monarch fans?

Speaker:

Welcome to the Hudson Homers Podcast.

Speaker:

We're coming to you from a victory Sunday, recording a day- Yes.

Speaker:

... early after the second walkoff win of the week and a series win.

Speaker:

CB, how's it going?

Speaker:

It's good.

Speaker:

I usually have time to get my, my voice back from yelling and I don't

Speaker:

feel it's- I feel extremely sunburned from actually having sun today.

Speaker:

Uh, but yeah, we're great, man.

Speaker:

That was, uh, yeah, second walk off of the week.

Speaker:

That is, so that's four walk offs in our last nine home games.

Speaker:

It's pretty

Speaker:

solid.

Speaker:

We didn't have won all last season.

Speaker:

Now four in the last nine home games, and we won seven of those nine games.

Speaker:

Um, so that's, you know, for a team that's been inconsistent and been struggling

Speaker:

all year, this is what you wanna do is win some games and, and show the grit.

Speaker:

We've had to come from behind in pretty much every one of those too.

Speaker:

It's not like we've been tied.

Speaker:

I mean, so I think, I think almost all of them have been, we were

Speaker:

f- behind and had to then win.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And this, today is definitely no different.

Speaker:

We were down four to one at one point, made it four to two.

Speaker:

And honestly, it was looking a little bleak there in the later innings.

Speaker:

But then just get some magic there in the ninth inning.

Speaker:

You get a guy on and Scotty Young comes through for a second walk off of the week.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Can't believe it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, that's, you know like I said, that's, that's just magic.

Speaker:

That's, you know, when you ... And, and Maddox Jack who had not had a win

Speaker:

in Kaiser's first year and after being hurt last year, hadn't had a win and

Speaker:

now he got two this week in the same- That thing didn't even last two minutes.

Speaker:

That's crazy.

Speaker:

Oh,

Speaker:

man.

Speaker:

The underbetters of clean house today.

Speaker:

We're two minutes on the timestamp and the

Speaker:

curtain's falling.

Speaker:

That, that barely lasted.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But, but yeah, so for Maddix, I mean, again, just the, the weirdness of baseball

Speaker:

that you don't have a win in your career.

Speaker:

Again, not a very short career, not like he's had a lot of opportunities,

Speaker:

um, but he only had one other decision.

Speaker:

But it gets two this week and, and both of them walk offs by Scott.

Speaker:

Scott Young is gonna eat for free at the Jack household for the rest of his life.

Speaker:

That's for sure.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I think so.

Speaker:

And, uh, this is the first conference series that I have not been able to

Speaker:

get down there for at least one game.

Speaker:

And then of course, naturally, that's the Sunbelt series that go and win.

Speaker:

But have no fear.

Speaker:

CB was there getting all the great shots today.

Speaker:

I don't know how far

Speaker:

that-

Speaker:

I

Speaker:

mean, as we know, he's a expressive guy, he's a fun guy and he's, he's

Speaker:

great for some walk off shots.

Speaker:

I mean, he is, he does some, he has a good time.

Speaker:

He's out there.

Speaker:

I told him today he's aura farming, he's out there-

Speaker:

To really make sure everybody knows how, how cool he is

Speaker:

and how much fun he's having.

Speaker:

Like, it's great.

Speaker:

I mean, there's never any doubt.

Speaker:

Always high energy, always super positive guy.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So for him to get the two walk offs this week, in his final

Speaker:

season of playing collegiate baseball too, I think that's big.

Speaker:

And we talked to him earlier this year, he's like, "I just wanna go out and

Speaker:

have fun. I wanna play baseball." Yeah.

Speaker:

And it, it took a little while to get there, but he

Speaker:

is definitely doing that now.

Speaker:

And to have two, uh, photos walking off the field covered in, uh

Speaker:

water from the Gatorade cooler, you've done something right.

Speaker:

Well, a lot of guys run, he's the guy that just stops and says,

Speaker:

"Hit me with that water." He's like, he's like, "I, I deserve it.

Speaker:

I got it.

Speaker:

" Yeah, this one, and this one actually ended up in the, uh, the

Speaker:

newspaper the other day, apparently.

Speaker:

Yeah, Virginia Pilot, which is-

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

... it's

Speaker:

cool.

Speaker:

I think he got accredited to ODU Athletics and not CB

Speaker:

Wilkins, but

Speaker:

that's okay.

Speaker:

We're not gonna, we're not gonna have the whole thing about how

Speaker:

nobody ever credits it ever.

Speaker:

You see a bazillion pictures a day and nobody ever knows what photographer

Speaker:

took it because nobody cares because they only care about the subject.

Speaker:

So I'm not gonna ... I never worry about it.

Speaker:

I appreciate, I know that our, our guys, Aaron and, and, uh, and Mike and

Speaker:

the monarchist and you all care, uh-

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

you know, which is nice.

Speaker:

But again, I, it's one of those battles.

Speaker:

It's like, man, whatever.

Speaker:

It's like it's cool.

Speaker:

That's a picture of Scotty doing a cool thing.

Speaker:

That's what matters in the picture.

Speaker:

It, it is.

Speaker:

And I'm pumped for Scotty.

Speaker:

I shot him Instagram message the other day after VCU.

Speaker:

I guess old heads still care about beating VCU.

Speaker:

I know- Yes.

Speaker:

... that really isn't a rivalry anymore, especially for the younger crew.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But, uh, to get the season sweep of VCU and the way we did was pretty awesome too.

Speaker:

We, we didn't walk him off obviously because we're on the road in Richmond, but

Speaker:

the 9th didn't come back to go ahead- It's

Speaker:

close.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Walk him off this week.

Speaker:

That, that just felt good, but really, really important win today.

Speaker:

We were down four to one and body language on the field wasn't super great.

Speaker:

Uh, I was like, oh no, if we lose this one, I mean, it, it's gonna be tough

Speaker:

to just to get in the tournament.

Speaker:

And now- mm-hmm.

Speaker:

... we were doing some calculations, still some games to go, but kinda

Speaker:

sitting in that seventh, eight spot with a whole bunch of other people.

Speaker:

Yeah, I think coming into today, we were like down in 11, like tied for 11th.

Speaker:

Um, and then you see how bunched up it is.

Speaker:

You end up, you know, I think, I think we're tied, currently tied for seventh,

Speaker:

but all, with Arkansas State who we beat with Marshall who beat us in our series.

Speaker:

So I'm not s- again, if it was last weekend, we might try to figure out

Speaker:

this out because we still have two more weeks, we'll worry about that.

Speaker:

But just to point out, you know, I mean, and, and let me see, I pull it up in front

Speaker:

of me this, you know, you're talking about there's only a few games between anybody.

Speaker:

It's, it's such a bunch that, uh, you know, you, you win some games.

Speaker:

I mean, yeah, but they, they still only two games away from

Speaker:

being in, like, fifth place.

Speaker:

I mean, it's-

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

... very tight.

Speaker:

It doesn't take much.

Speaker:

Um, you got six more games, you go out and you can win, win, I mean, win a

Speaker:

series or two, hopefully win both of them, you put yourself in a good spot.

Speaker:

I mean, again, getting there is great, getting out of that first game, uh,

Speaker:

single elimination is even better.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And we still have a chance to do that.

Speaker:

It's, it's getting longer, I think, as the, the day goes on here, but,

Speaker:

uh, sitting at 11 and 13, if you can find a way to win four more games,

Speaker:

you're 15 and 15 and probably right on the borderline of s- of six,

Speaker:

seven, getting another episode here.

Speaker:

Um, and that, that's big.

Speaker:

I think if we lose today, we're on the outside of 10 looking in and a tough

Speaker:

road ahead with three at Coastal and then three at home against the Rival JMU.

Speaker:

And that's the thing is, you know, I mean, Coastal, obviously, they,

Speaker:

I mean, they lost a game today.

Speaker:

They've, they've been losing a few games in some of their series here.

Speaker:

Uh, they're not, like, totally unbeatable, uh, but they're extremely

Speaker:

good baseball team and they, you're gonna go on the road to their place.

Speaker:

It's gonna be a tough series.

Speaker:

So yeah, if you lost a day and you're sitting there outside of it, gotta go

Speaker:

play one of the best teams in the country at their place for a whole weekend,

Speaker:

you're really asking a lot of yourselves.

Speaker:

And, and, and like I said, we keep, you know, he keeps getting to the

Speaker:

point where it's like, I'm asking, we're, we're hoping for the team to

Speaker:

do things they haven't done all year, which is like right now, what we, I

Speaker:

don't think we won a, a road series.

Speaker:

Um, so that's, we want that next weekend, but it's also like we haven't done that.

Speaker:

Now again, you, you don't do it till you do it, so go do it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

They were two outs away from it though at Georgia State.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, so it's obviously better to play the last couple weeks, uh, and it's

Speaker:

leading to some good results of what we can do in the, in the postseason.

Speaker:

Um, but-

Speaker:

Yeah, I saw, speaking of Georgia State, I saw, uh, Jason Hartline, um, who of course

Speaker:

we remember as the, the great lefty, uh, from Greenbrier Christian holds the record

Speaker:

for, um, appearances for a career for old.

Speaker:

I mean, he was at the game today, he was here for the alumni weekend

Speaker:

that kind of got a little messed up.

Speaker:

Um, but he, he told me he was at that game last Sunday because he

Speaker:

said they get, they always give him a hard time about being bad luck.

Speaker:

Um, but he's like, he was at the games, right?

Speaker:

He lives in Atlanta, so he was right at that game at Georgia State on Sunday.

Speaker:

He's like, oh, that was-

Speaker:

Oh,

Speaker:

poor

Speaker:

Jason. That's not gonna knock that monitor off.

Speaker:

He, I think he had to leave early today, so I will, I will next time I see him

Speaker:

give him hard time about the fact that they didn't win till after he was gone.

Speaker:

Uh-

Speaker:

Gotta, gotta keep him out of there just watching the ESPNs feed.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, well, uh, Coach Finwood not joining us today.

Speaker:

Obviously, he's just wrapping up from the ballpark.

Speaker:

Has plenty of other things before they, uh, have a midweek this week,

Speaker:

uh, but we're gonna have a couple guys stop by here throughout the episode.

Speaker:

So stay tuned for all of that.

Speaker:

Uh, but wanna kind of flash us back a little bit here to the VCU game- Yeah.

Speaker:

uh, just because that, that was looking like some of our midweeks that we've

Speaker:

had against some other teams where we're down four to nothing and we kinda look

Speaker:

dead and we get two there in the fourth.

Speaker:

And I, I feel like that, that changed the momentum and a pretty big

Speaker:

wave for us early on in that game.

Speaker:

Yeah, we're, I mean, again, we've, we've had too many

Speaker:

games where we've gotten down.

Speaker:

But this whole week, I mean, you think about when they gave up six,

Speaker:

uh, in the mid week, which is very impressive for a midweek game.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, gave up, uh, what, none in the, in the first game Friday, um, gave

Speaker:

up six, was it in the second game?

Speaker:

Yeah, six

Speaker:

in second game.

Speaker:

And then four in that game.

Speaker:

So that's, that's a very

Speaker:

I like math is hard, but that's what, uh, 10, um, 16 runs and four games.

Speaker:

I mean, that's, so it's like a four yard- Four, four runs

Speaker:

a

Speaker:

game.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's

Speaker:

not bad.

Speaker:

Yeah, something like that.

Speaker:

I mean, that's, that's pretty great.

Speaker:

Uh, we, we, if you had a four year for the season, we'd probably

Speaker:

be a, have a much better record.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, so that's showing things are moving in the right direction.

Speaker:

I mean, for the weekend, it was like a 3.3 three year A, I think.

Speaker:

Um, so 10 runs of three games and, and a shutout involved.

Speaker:

So yeah, things are, you know, yeah, it's too, too much of getting behind

Speaker:

early and having to fight back.

Speaker:

I mean, that, that wears you out, but at least they're getting used to doing it.

Speaker:

Yeah, they're not dragging their heads or not putting their head down, like, "Oh,

Speaker:

there's no shot." Now they are coming back and, and saying, "Hey, we got this.

Speaker:

" There's a lot more situational hitting, a lot more refusing to lose, a lot, a lot

Speaker:

less trying to hit it over the fence, um, especially this week because it was cold.

Speaker:

It wasn't going over the fence.

Speaker:

Yeah, cold, windy, had all kinds of things, uh, this weekend to keep the

Speaker:

ball in the ballpark for the most part.

Speaker:

And yeah, I mean, I, I think also just defensively, we

Speaker:

played a little bit better too.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Like, uh, I was just looking through.

Speaker:

We didn't really have- Well, Nick

Speaker:

Felton, center field, we'll do that.

Speaker:

I think we finally put it out of, you know, two thirds of the earth is covered

Speaker:

by water and the other third is covered by Nick Felton because it's accurate.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, number three on sports centers, top 10 plays on Friday night and Saturday

Speaker:

morning, very well deserved there.

Speaker:

I mean, I don't know how he got-

Speaker:

But that day, um, he had that amazing catch, which was, by the angle, you

Speaker:

can't tell because I, I wasn't there either, but that, that's a lot deeper

Speaker:

in center field than you realize.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

He was out there pretty much on the warning track, um, in right center.

Speaker:

Um, and then TJ made a great play, I'm not sure, I think it was in the second

Speaker:

game, the beginning of the second game.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Um, and then that was about like the first or second inning and they were coming in

Speaker:

from the outfield and Scotty runs by me, he's like, "No, I gotta make a great one."

Speaker:

And he goes out, they go hit, then he goes out the field and

Speaker:

then he makes a great catch.

Speaker:

So it was like a lot of really good defense.

Speaker:

And, and, and again, we were strong around the infields.

Speaker:

Um, Tylers Zedalis had a couple of phenomenal plays.

Speaker:

He had that one, uh, leaping grab he got, um, and then he had

Speaker:

another one that was just like a

Speaker:

Yeah, that one where I just happened to get lucky.

Speaker:

I was already looking at Tyler because I, I kind of figured maybe the guy

Speaker:

might hit the ball at him and so he made this nice leaping catch.

Speaker:

Um, and he had one like an inning or two later that was like a screamer he was

Speaker:

able to just kind of catch at himself and, and easy, easy play after that.

Speaker:

Um, so yeah, I mean-

Speaker:

He's, he's been so good at third base defensively since he came in there.

Speaker:

And like you're just seeing the defense start to step up, like Will and Mav

Speaker:

look a really good up middle, um, just looking like a much better ball club

Speaker:

over the last couple weeks and then just, I think it paid off in a big way this

Speaker:

weekend and then Friday in that first game, we got the, the, the appearance of

Speaker:

the year from Darin Kuskie, six innings pitch, no runs, three hits, one walk, 11

Speaker:

strikeouts, 90 pitches for Darin Kuskie.

Speaker:

Uh, easily his best outing of the year and Ben Tanton came right behind him,

Speaker:

slammed the door and shut him out.

Speaker:

Yeah, I think they said that's the most strikeouts the team has

Speaker:

had in the game since like last March at, uh, Norfolk State.

Speaker:

We had like 17, so that was 15.

Speaker:

Um, yeah, I, that was one I had to watch that.

Speaker:

Um, I was working for sure, but it was, it was on the phone there at

Speaker:

work while I was, you know, in front of me doing my emails or whatever.

Speaker:

Uh, and yeah, I mean, it's, that was nasty.

Speaker:

That was, that's the, that's the, that's the Kuskie that frankly, I think we

Speaker:

thought we were gonna get all year.

Speaker:

I mean, back in the fall, that's kind of how he looked.

Speaker:

You know, there, there were a lot of scouts were following him.

Speaker:

Um, you know, it's still the kind of thing.

Speaker:

Somebody might, if he pitches like this through the end of the year, it

Speaker:

still might be a scout that's like, "Hey, I like him. Maybe now we can get

Speaker:

him out of the bargain. Who knows?"

Speaker:

Yeah, I mean, couple more solid outings for him.

Speaker:

And I mean, I think the big test for him will be Friday down at Coastal Carolina.

Speaker:

Yeah, for

Speaker:

sure.

Speaker:

You know, playing one of the best teams in the country, if he can go

Speaker:

replicate that, he's gonna pop back up on everyone's radar pretty quickly.

Speaker:

But he-

Speaker:

Which is funny, because I was pointing out to you that if you look at

Speaker:

Coastal's numbers, they aren't super impre- like they're hitting, it was

Speaker:

now 270 of the team, actually went up a little bit, but like 270 is a team,

Speaker:

their ERA is, it was a little higher.

Speaker:

I mean, it's, they're, they have a couple of guys having like solid years.

Speaker:

Actually, two of their better hitters only have like half as many at bats.

Speaker:

I don't know if they were hurt or they worked their way into it,

Speaker:

but like, they're not like a team where you look at it like, man,

Speaker:

these guys, this is Murderers Row.

Speaker:

Every single guy in this lineup is hitting 350 with 10 home runs.

Speaker:

Like it's, I, I think it's just a case of what we saw when we played them, when

Speaker:

we played them last year, they get hit by pitches, um, they grind, they go out and

Speaker:

they fight, they're just a, a good team.

Speaker:

So with, with Kuskie, his big thing is that he did it on Friday, just

Speaker:

don't walk, guys, don't beat yourself.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

And even when he had cut back on his walks towards the middle of

Speaker:

the year, he was getting hit a ton.

Speaker:

I mean, giving up seven, eight, nine hits and outing, and I think he's

Speaker:

found the, the happy medium there.

Speaker:

Uh, Coastal's dealt with a lot of injuries this season.

Speaker:

I think, uh, Cameron Fluke pitched for them today and they lost to Georgia

Speaker:

Southern, but I think that was either the first or maybe the second time

Speaker:

Flukey's pitched since his injury.

Speaker:

So I think they're, they're gonna get better, at least from a pitching

Speaker:

perspective, but they play like a team that doesn't have the best talent in

Speaker:

the Sunbelt, even though they do have the best talent, but they- Right.

Speaker:

... crowd the play, they get hit by the pitch, they do all the dirty work stuff too.

Speaker:

And that's why they're, that's why they made the College World

Speaker:

Series final last year because they, they do all the things- Yeah.

Speaker:

and they have the talent to back it up.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

They're, I mean, that's the thing.

Speaker:

The, they're a great example of, like, just fight, just refuse to lose.

Speaker:

Um, I'm, I'm having trouble right now finding, uh, the number of hit by pitches.

Speaker:

I know they have 112, which sounds like a crazy amount.

Speaker:

It's, it's a lot.

Speaker:

They were up there last year too.

Speaker:

That's, that's bananas.

Speaker:

Um, where are we at just for, you know, I feel like we've been hit a fair amount.

Speaker:

We're at 75 and I feel like we've been hit plenty.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So just to tell you, they, they're racking up 30 more than

Speaker:

we have, 40 more than we have.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's their thing.

Speaker:

And then they, and they said they're

Speaker:

I did not enjoy their fans last year.

Speaker:

I'm glad that frankly, they'll be on the road.

Speaker:

They, they were complaining, complaining about getting hit by pitches, like,

Speaker:

man, you guys are leading the entire country and getting hit by a pitches.

Speaker:

Like, you think it might be you and not us.

Speaker:

Like every, y'all do ... Oh, to me, it was like, are y'all doing this every week?

Speaker:

You're out here every week, like, complaining about this?

Speaker:

Yeah, well, 1:12, right?

Speaker:

And depending on what happened this weekend, they would be

Speaker:

leading the country with 112.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, it's part of their approach.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

They stand right on top of the plate and force you to throw strikes

Speaker:

to throw it away, one of the two.

Speaker:

And we just didn't.

Speaker:

We want to throw inside on them, and if breaking ball cuts

Speaker:

too much, it is what it is.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, but then- And then,

Speaker:

and then, uh, there you go.

Speaker:

You, you're right what I was gonna say, go for it.

Speaker:

My

Speaker:

bad.

Speaker:

I was like, the, the baby faced assassin if you dumbed him and that

Speaker:

caught on with someone on social media-

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

but

Speaker:

three innings save, no runs, no hits, one walk, four- I

Speaker:

caught on with his, his dad is who it caught on with.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

All the dads like that one.

Speaker:

There were some other folks too, but that was, yeah.

Speaker:

Well, if I felt like leaning into some AI, I'm sure I could, you know, implement

Speaker:

the little baby sticking the gun out of the crib like you described last week.

Speaker:

Shooting like a baseball out would be, yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Someone I think is managing his social media because I was getting a, a

Speaker:

tweet from him while I was watching him pitch on TV- That's funny.

Speaker:

... for a second, I thought ESPN+ had betrayed me with a long delay again, but no.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

No, it's, uh, somebody else is on there.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But just really a perfect game for us on that first game on Friday.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, you've got seven runs on the board by the end of the third.

Speaker:

It's seven nothing.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Tanton just eat the final three innings there, you don't burn

Speaker:

any arms and you get a shutout.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Game two-

Speaker:

And I, and I saw some people arguing that like, "Well, why are you

Speaker:

throwing Tanton in that game when you're already up by that much?"

Speaker:

And it's like, I guess it's a fair argument, but what you just

Speaker:

said makes the most sense, right?

Speaker:

It's like you need somebody, you need those last three

Speaker:

innings to get eaten, right?

Speaker:

Put Ben out there, you know he's gonna do it, you know he's gonna win.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Then we got our other arms available.

Speaker:

He's been kind of throwing consistently on Fridays.

Speaker:

He's still a freshman.

Speaker:

I mean, we forget that because he's been so good, but like let him have that

Speaker:

routine, let him go out and dominate.

Speaker:

And we, we take the first game of a series, which we need.

Speaker:

We need to win the series.

Speaker:

We need to win the games.

Speaker:

So I think there, there's an argument for, you know, you throw somebody

Speaker:

else out there and you know, but we also, we saw last weekend how hard

Speaker:

it is to get five out, uh, to get two outs without giving up five runs.

Speaker:

So- Yes.

Speaker:

With one of your better

Speaker:

pitchers

Speaker:

too.

Speaker:

Yeah, right.

Speaker:

So sometimes like, hey, who looked dominant again today, right?

Speaker:

So, um, yeah, sometimes it's just go out and get the win.

Speaker:

And any of those arguments were a moot point after game two- Right.

Speaker:

... because we did not score.

Speaker:

So you could have brought Justin Herlander back out and we,

Speaker:

we

Speaker:

might still be playing that game, but uh, it's not like, you know, we, we lost like

Speaker:

an 11 to nine game or something like that.

Speaker:

It was six to nothing in game two.

Speaker:

The guys just looked kind of beat.

Speaker:

They look like they didn't have any energy left, especially towards

Speaker:

the second half of that game.

Speaker:

And, you know, give, uh, Arkansas state credit.

Speaker:

I mean, their pitching staff was fantastic in that second game.

Speaker:

Uh, Tyler Weimer, five and a third, no runs, two hits, no walks, six strikeouts.

Speaker:

I mean, just, just kind of filled the zone up a lot with strikes and if we were

Speaker:

making contact, it was right at somebody.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Their guys look pretty good all weekend.

Speaker:

I mean, we, we just didn't in that game, because that, that was, I was able

Speaker:

to get to the ballpark for that game.

Speaker:

Um, a lot of hitting it right at guys.

Speaker:

Um, it was a very cold, I mean, it got cold again for, it was warmer

Speaker:

today, uh, but, you know, the ball's not going anywhere, cold and windy.

Speaker:

Um, and, and again, just some bad luck maybe, but also maybe not

Speaker:

having the most competitive at bats.

Speaker:

Um, yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, because I, I didn't think the pitching staff did that poorly.

Speaker:

I mean, JJ Gatti went four and two thirds, only allowed two runs.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, I'll, I'll take that on a Saturday start all day.

Speaker:

Uh, you know, Jason is a little bit rocky letting two runs in, but for the

Speaker:

most part, we were, we were fine as a pitching staff the whole weekend.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And Chris Cavalcante looked very nice at the end of the game.

Speaker:

He's got a bright future ahead of him.

Speaker:

S- I tell you, he's one of those guys gets you excited every time you see him.

Speaker:

It's like, man, if you can just lock in and then really, you know, hopefully

Speaker:

whatever, if he's ... I, I, I doubt he's gonna go throw this summer, but

Speaker:

if he's gonna go work out and, and get bigger and stronger and, and work on

Speaker:

his pitches, I mean, you could really see some, a guy that's got a lot of r-

Speaker:

talk about a perfect pitcher body too.

Speaker:

The guy's like six, seven or whatever he, six, six.

Speaker:

I don't know what he is.

Speaker:

Um, he's too big for shoes.

Speaker:

I know that.

Speaker:

Uh, he's-

Speaker:

Wingspan's insane.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

He probably, he, I bet he could do like a 360 dunk on somebody.

Speaker:

Frank, frankly, the basketball team should be trying to get him.

Speaker:

I don't know.

Speaker:

The kid, kid is, uh, uh, yeah, he, he looks good.

Speaker:

That ball's already like touching home plate as he lets go of it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's not coming from 60 feet, six inches, so I'll tell you that.

Speaker:

It's much, much closer and right on top of your head, uh, as he's delivering it.

Speaker:

So, and, and Tyler Stott came in, he got two outs as well.

Speaker:

I was, I was glad to see him get another shot after last weekend- Yeah.

Speaker:

just to kinda maybe just get that bad taste out of your mouth from last

Speaker:

week and kinda go back to the, the happier times of the weekend before.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, but, you know, obviously not, not a good one and that made today's

Speaker:

game all the more important and-

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

... got it done today.

Speaker:

I mean, off the jump, it was in good shape.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And Okownkwo, you know, he gave up three runs, only one was earned.

Speaker:

So again, not, you know, not like last week where he threw threes scoreless

Speaker:

twice, you know, uh, and Bailey gave up one run and two and a third.

Speaker:

Uh, but then Slopezio came in and looked, uh, outstanding- Yeah.

Speaker:

... three scoreless innings.

Speaker:

Um, Max Jack came in, again, earned that victory because he looked really

Speaker:

good at the end when, when Nick just maybe ran out of gas a little bit.

Speaker:

Um, and yeah, the pitching was, was good.

Speaker:

I mean, again, you give up four runs of a game, like, you should win that game.

Speaker:

In a college game, especially, you give up four runs, you should win that game.

Speaker:

So I'm glad that we worked that out at the end to make that happen.

Speaker:

Big hits.

Speaker:

Um, yeah, Brody Connors had a great day playing second base, two for

Speaker:

four, had a big hit there at the end.

Speaker:

Um, I think his run was the one that, um, TJ drove in to Ty it.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

I'm pretty sure.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's when, yeah, um, Cole McKinnon came in to run for him.

Speaker:

Um, TJ, you know, again, he's, he's been sucked.

Speaker:

It's not, I was talking to him right after.

Speaker:

I was like, "Hey, man, just having fun, right?" He's like, "Yeah, it's

Speaker:

like just see the ball, hit the ball, be athletic."He's like, "It

Speaker:

take, took me a minute, you know.

Speaker:

He did be the first one to tell you, he's a little slow sometimes.

Speaker:

He forgets sometimes.

Speaker:

So he's, it's, it's hard.

Speaker:

It's hard in the moment to remember, like, just be an athlete.

Speaker:

He plays a more emotion than you sometimes see, especially if you're

Speaker:

just watching the TV broadcast.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Like he cares a lot about- He

Speaker:

really does.

Speaker:

about how he plays, but all right, uh, you wanna hit players of the week real quick?

Speaker:

Uh, sure, unless we have somebody waiting.

Speaker:

Is nobody waiting or-

Speaker:

Uh, Brody's actually on, is on-

Speaker:

Let's do it after the, let's do it after the fact.

Speaker:

It's not keeping guys waiting.

Speaker:

They got stuff to do.

Speaker:

All right, awesome.

Speaker:

Well, we'll bring Brody on here in just one second.

Speaker:

Brody, welcome to the show.

Speaker:

Hey, how we doing?

Speaker:

Brody.

Speaker:

How y'all doing?

Speaker:

Uh,

Speaker:

look at rep in California in the back.

Speaker:

We love it.

Speaker:

Here we go.

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

Did, uh, were you forced to put that up today by Scotty or, or what's the deal?

Speaker:

No, I've had this thing up, but I think he'd appreciate it.

Speaker:

S- him and Zach.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I say, it's, we got a lot of California guys.

Speaker:

It's kinda, it's kinda great.

Speaker:

We all live, we all grew up in like a 20 minute circle and I, I didn't know

Speaker:

either of them, which is hilarious.

Speaker:

Yeah, a little older.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's funny.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That is pretty awesome.

Speaker:

Well, are, have you recovered your voice a little bit?

Speaker:

I'm sure you were yelling in the dugout the end of the game today.

Speaker:

I'm trying.

Speaker:

You, you heard me cougher.

Speaker:

There it is.

Speaker:

Yeah, yeah.

Speaker:

A little bit.

Speaker:

I was a little fired up, but- Yeah.

Speaker:

No, me too.

Speaker:

I told him the same thing.

Speaker:

I usually have a day before you do this.

Speaker:

I can recover

Speaker:

a little

Speaker:

bit.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

100%. No, yeah, that was a fun game.

Speaker:

Yeah, you definitely played a big part in the, in the win today, getting the start

Speaker:

today at second and going two for four.

Speaker:

I guess, uh, when did you find out you were starting today and, and how were

Speaker:

you feeling leading up to the game?

Speaker:

Uh, I walked down to the field and y- and Mav's, Mav's been

Speaker:

unbelievable rec- as of recently.

Speaker:

His, his glove's amazing.

Speaker:

I got, I was really confused for a bit.

Speaker:

But yeah, I, I was super, super stoked and had a lot of fun doing it.

Speaker:

That was, that was kind of what I was trying to, like, do is try to have

Speaker:

as much fun and then see how I could, you know, help and contribute today.

Speaker:

Yeah, I have to imagine, you know, this is your second year here, um,

Speaker:

few less at bats this year, but you've been a lot more productive actually

Speaker:

this year with the batch you've had.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You know, as a guy who, in high school, you're probably playing

Speaker:

every single day, I have to imagine.

Speaker:

How has that been trying to adjust to not always being in there, never really

Speaker:

knowing when you're get, sometimes going weeks without getting a chance.

Speaker:

How have you made that adjustment?

Speaker:

I mean, first of all, it's not like, it's not a lot of fun.

Speaker:

It's not a lot of fun at first, but- Yeah,

Speaker:

that's fair.

Speaker:

Honestly, it's just, just being ready, trusting your process, kind of what

Speaker:

you're doing every day and, you know, just kinda being a good teammate that b-

Speaker:

uh, yeah, being a good teammate always is ... If you could, if you could help,

Speaker:

if you can help some people, you'll end up helping yourself at some point, so

Speaker:

Yeah, and then, you know, just working every day, been getting stronger.

Speaker:

So that's been a big thing, just trying to be ready every chance I get.

Speaker:

Well, definitely

Speaker:

look like- Yeah, as I say, you always seem like a great teammate.

Speaker:

You seem like you're always, like, involved.

Speaker:

I've never, I've never once seen you sitting around looking like, wow, Brody

Speaker:

looks like he's feeling sorry for himself.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Like, that's, that's,

Speaker:

that's, that's how you stay ready too.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

There's that and, like, when I ... Uh, I did a little bit as a freshman

Speaker:

just because, like, I was- No, like, really early on, I was just

Speaker:

like, "Oh my God, this, this, what am I doing?" But, um- You're on the

Speaker:

other side of the country too, yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, too.

Speaker:

That, that, that was a big adjustment.

Speaker:

But at the end of the day, it's just if I, I, I wanna give

Speaker:

more th- more than I take it.

Speaker:

If I can be, if I can help someone else that I c- I'm contributing

Speaker:

to the cause of the team.

Speaker:

If I can help someone out or I can kinda talk, talk to some guys through

Speaker:

some stuff, and that's always a way that you can kinda stay involved.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Seeing the game from a little bit different perspective-

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

definitely.

Speaker:

... kinda not getting locked in too much on the actual play on the field.

Speaker:

Yeah, definitely.

Speaker:

You can also see a bunch of stuff that you can't see when you're playing.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

So- What are some

Speaker:

examples of that?

Speaker:

Just like, um, s- say like when runners are like rounding bases,

Speaker:

like backpick opportunities, just stuff that you can kinda see and

Speaker:

then like picking up pictures, like patterns and stuff like that.

Speaker:

Sometimes you're, when you're, when I'm playing, I get a little bit, I don't

Speaker:

look at, look at the big picture, but-

Speaker:

You're thinking more field the ball, where's it coming from?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Those kind of things rather than

Speaker:

like- Yeah, I'm very- ... What's this

Speaker:

runner behind me doing?

Speaker:

Very one, one dimension, not one dimensional, but like-

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

you kinda, oh, this guy, this guy throws 91.92 with the slider.

Speaker:

Okay, let's go.

Speaker:

But where, when I'm kinda watching from afar, I can kinda see like, all

Speaker:

right he's throwing this and this count, he's kinda working hitters this

Speaker:

way and that way, stuff like that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So I think that kinda helped a little bit, uh, especially as a freshman now,

Speaker:

kinda just being able to kinda like think about, think about stuff more like

Speaker:

as a ball player and react in that way.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, kind of an unusual schedule for you all this week, playing two

Speaker:

on the Friday, having the rain out Saturday, then coming back Sunday.

Speaker:

Uh, what did you do on the off day yesterday, a rare weekend off day?

Speaker:

It was weird.

Speaker:

I, I, I like, I, I had like time to do stuff.

Speaker:

I, uh, woke up, hit in the morning, um, kinda just laid in bed.

Speaker:

I've watched a movie.

Speaker:

That was weird.

Speaker:

What'd you watch?

Speaker:

The Gentleman.

Speaker:

It's like a, uh- Okay.

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

yeah.

Speaker:

It's like with like Matthew McConney, it's a good movie.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And then I end up- I think

Speaker:

Finney told us about that one time.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's a good movie.

Speaker:

And then I went down to Virginia Beach, me and my girlfriend

Speaker:

went down and had dinner.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Nice.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

So you had

Speaker:

nice- Yeah, got to be relaxed.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

I know.

Speaker:

Gorgeous some points there on the random Saturday off

Speaker:

day during the season.

Speaker:

Oh, yep.

Speaker:

Love, gotta love that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So Brody, we, we haven't had you on the podcast for, so I tell everybody,

Speaker:

like you said, you're from California.

Speaker:

How in the world do you end up on the other side of the

Speaker:

country coming to Old Dominion?

Speaker:

Yeah, it's kinda, it's kind of a long story, but-

Speaker:

That was you asking yourself that, that first month as a freshman.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I had a, I had a weird, I had a really weird first couple months as a freshman

Speaker:

here, but I know, I committed pretty late.

Speaker:

I committed my Jan- in January of my senior year.

Speaker:

Oh, wow.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So, because I thought, I thought I was gonna go somewhere on the

Speaker:

West Coast, but then, um, you, you guys remember Ryan Fineman?

Speaker:

Yep.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

He's, he's a California guy, so he's out there a fair bit, so he kinda just, he,

Speaker:

he ended, he talked to me about all the good stuff that, that this program had to

Speaker:

offer and it sounded good, came out here.

Speaker:

I, I like Norfolk a fair, a lot compared, compared to what I thought it

Speaker:

was gonna be, so that was pretty cool.

Speaker:

And, um- What did you think

Speaker:

it was gonna be?

Speaker:

Just curious.

Speaker:

Not,

Speaker:

not like, not, uh, uh, I don't know how to, I don't know what I, I didn't

Speaker:

really have like a mental image.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I thought it was gonna be, I thought it was gonna be a little bit less industrial.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

Like, but with the military, the military town around, I

Speaker:

think the area's really cool.

Speaker:

Downtown's really fun.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Got some good restaurants and stuff down there.

Speaker:

But yeah, I mean, I thought it was, I didn't think it was gonna

Speaker:

be as, I, I didn't think I was gonna enjoy it as much as I did.

Speaker:

So I ended up committing at breakfast on my last day of my visit, so

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

Well,

Speaker:

that's awesome.

Speaker:

That was fun.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, I know you all kind of live there close to the ballpark, but

Speaker:

who are your housemates this year?

Speaker:

I'm with Hunter Baynes, Cole Lanford, and Chris Cavalcante.

Speaker:

Ooh.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

I'm the all- all pictures.

Speaker:

I like the house.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But- You just, you just walk

Speaker:

around telling them they're not athletes all day?

Speaker:

Oh, the entire day.

Speaker:

The whole time.

Speaker:

They-

Speaker:

I mean, there's two guys in your house that throw 90 plus.

Speaker:

That's not a, that's not a bad spot to be.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

It's, it, it's also really cool, especially because I can kind of bounce.

Speaker:

Like I, I just, uh, Hunter threw live for the first time that, uh,

Speaker:

the other day and I, I faced him.

Speaker:

So him and I like talked for like an hour about every, like ev-

Speaker:

everything that kind of went on.

Speaker:

It was really cool.

Speaker:

Kind of getting to bounce ideas off of everything, kind of seeing

Speaker:

a different perspective too, so

Speaker:

... Little self scouting there.

Speaker:

Kind of.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Hunter, Hunter looked really good.

Speaker:

Yeah, so I think Finny said he's gonna throw on, uh, Tuesday, so that'd be

Speaker:

pretty good.

Speaker:

Yeah, we'll see.

Speaker:

I, I mean, I, I, that he's always so much fun to play behind and watch.

Speaker:

Mm-hmm.

Speaker:

When you're playing behind him, you don't really have to do too much.

Speaker:

Hang out.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, that's, that's gonna be a little reality check for Richmond.

Speaker:

I mean, playing in the 810, they played against us a couple times-

Speaker:

Oh, that's what I told him.

Speaker:

was 98, the first pitch.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's-

Speaker:

I told him the other day, the first guy's gonna poop himself.

Speaker:

Yeah, I still remember his first time appearance at Georgia Tech.

Speaker:

He, he went like 98, 98 and then like big curve ball, just the guy buckled.

Speaker:

I'm like, "Oh my God, this guy's disgusting."

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, that's almost like a, a Trade deadline acquisition for us as we

Speaker:

get near the end of the year- Yeah.

Speaker:

getting ready to go to the Sunbelt tournament.

Speaker:

I mean, it's a pretty damn good arm to be adding back.

Speaker:

Uh, that's not ... Yeah.

Speaker:

No, I don't think anyone's gonna complain with him.

Speaker:

Him on the bump.

Speaker:

It's, he's not ... For as much as I face him, I still haven't figured him out.

Speaker:

It's the, it's not ... The, the fastball is just, you guys all see it, but it's,

Speaker:

it's off speed stuff that's so good that gets you just off that fastball.

Speaker:

That's just, it's 97, 98.

Speaker:

And, and if you're kinda, if you've seen a lot of soft stuff or anything like that,

Speaker:

which none of this stuff's soft, but-

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

I mean, he's throwing a, he throwing a cutter at like 90 miles an hour.

Speaker:

I'm like, it's crazy.

Speaker:

Not even, not even fair.

Speaker:

No.

Speaker:

Not even

Speaker:

fair.

Speaker:

Oh.

Speaker:

But he, he's a good guy.

Speaker:

Um- Yeah,

Speaker:

I love Hunter.

Speaker:

I'm a big fan.

Speaker:

Cole- Cole's awesome too.

Speaker:

He's great to live with.

Speaker:

Chris, Chris is awesome too.

Speaker:

So I got, I got, I lucked out with my house.

Speaker:

Not saying I would-

Speaker:

Good house.

Speaker:

I wouldn't like living out there, living with anyone else, but I'm

Speaker:

really happy with these guys around.

Speaker:

Uh, d- who helped Cole pick out his outfit for the, uh, Golden Monach Awards?

Speaker:

I have no idea because I, I have no idea.

Speaker:

I, I don't, I wasn't at the house like before for like long.

Speaker:

I just, I saw him there.

Speaker:

I'm like, oh boy, this, that's about as cool as it gets.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And then they get him best dressed on top of it.

Speaker:

Oh, dude that, that, that, that just made, that made everybody's night.

Speaker:

It was a good

Speaker:

time.

Speaker:

Oh, fantastic.

Speaker:

Oh, don't worry.

Speaker:

I'm, I'm about to have the picture up, so don't worry here.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

Uh, so Brody, you know, you, you played, uh, second to day, you played mostly

Speaker:

third, a little bit of second too.

Speaker:

What position do you like playing?

Speaker:

From lacrosse.

Speaker:

Yeah, you're good.

Speaker:

Kia and then, and then- Okay, cool.

Speaker:

Cool, yeah.

Speaker:

The mustache place- I think he actually like has a good s- yeah, mustache is just-

Speaker:

Mustache is awesome.

Speaker:

Love this kid.

Speaker:

It's like he,

Speaker:

he's on the

Speaker:

rodeo maybe actually.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

On the, the steer team, yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

no doubt.

Speaker:

But what position do you, do you like playing best or do you

Speaker:

feel like you're the best at?

Speaker:

Um, I don't, I don't really have a preference.

Speaker:

It's just kind of playing it a little, you kind of just play it a little different.

Speaker:

Uh, there's no real like preference.

Speaker:

I think, I mean third base you have less time to think.

Speaker:

So that's kind of funny you kind of let, let it eat across the diamond.

Speaker:

The second, I like, I like second because I have more kind of freedom with how I

Speaker:

move to, to attack the ball, but I really don't, I don't really have a preference.

Speaker:

Third base, I, I do like the third base like kind of stuff gets hit

Speaker:

really hard at you, so you kind of got to make do with what you kind

Speaker:

of, the situation at hand, but-

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I, but I like both of them a lot.

Speaker:

Now I heard, um, you and a couple of our freshmen who are red shirt in

Speaker:

this year, Case, uh, Cam Telefon and, uh, JJ Hand, you guys are going to go

Speaker:

play for the Winchester Royals- Yeah.

Speaker:

in the Valley League in the summer.

Speaker:

Yeah, you're looking for, I have to imagine, if nothing else,

Speaker:

looking forward to go up there and hopefully just get to play a lot.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's kind of the main thing I kind of, being able to play every day should be

Speaker:

a ni- a nice thing along with kind of being people I know, so that, that, that

Speaker:

always helps and like, yeah, coming, compared to coming here, know, knowing

Speaker:

no one, it, it'll be cool that I have people around plus I have a couple buddies

Speaker:

that live close, girlfriend's family lives close, so I'll, I'll be around

Speaker:

people, so I'll be, I'll, I'll end up seeing, uh, Rocky Green, remember him?

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

A lot.

Speaker:

Is he gonna play there too?

Speaker:

Or is he-

Speaker:

No, he, he, he's, um, he's like a 45 minute drive away, so-

Speaker:

Okay, yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, we're, we're gonna probably golf a couple times.

Speaker:

Heck yeah.

Speaker:

Good kid, man, like

Speaker:

Rocky.

Speaker:

He's one, he's awesome.

Speaker:

Did he end up playing somewhere this year or,

Speaker:

uh- No, he, um, he had the, he had the surgery and he's returning to throw now.

Speaker:

He's gonna play at BMI next year.

Speaker:

Oh, good for him.That's a

Speaker:

great hot,

Speaker:

that's a

Speaker:

great spot for guys.

Speaker:

Real stoked for him.

Speaker:

I was on the phone with him for that.

Speaker:

That's really

Speaker:

cool.

Speaker:

Yesterday catching up.

Speaker:

That's awesome.

Speaker:

That's exciting to hear that.

Speaker:

Good

Speaker:

for him.

Speaker:

For sure.

Speaker:

Absolutely.

Speaker:

The Valley's such a fun league to play in too because there's so many of those

Speaker:

like old like small town ballparks that still exist there with like 500 seats and

Speaker:

most people are standing with like coolers at their feet and things like that.

Speaker:

Just a, it's a cool, cool vibe for a summer league out there.

Speaker:

I'm, I'm excited.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I, especially because I'm gonna go to some of the parts of the

Speaker:

country that I've never been.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You

Speaker:

will, you will see some places that nobody's ever been.

Speaker:

I'm excited.

Speaker:

I, I think- Yeah.

Speaker:

I, I didn't play summer ball last year coming in.

Speaker:

I had a broken thumb.

Speaker:

I was

Speaker:

... So

Speaker:

I, I'm excited to kind of experience that now.

Speaker:

Kinda, kind of a more, not lackadaisical, but like kind of a more relaxed, just

Speaker:

get, going out there doing, playing baseball, hanging out, no school.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Nice.

Speaker:

I was

Speaker:

gonna say no classes is probably a

Speaker:

good

Speaker:

little boy too.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I was d- before, uh, before I hopped on this, I was getting

Speaker:

most of my homework done.

Speaker:

Yeah, no, we appreciate you.

Speaker:

I know, I knew that was a thing in the finals right now.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But yeah, I'm just trying to get all of it done before head out to Conway.

Speaker:

Yeah, because yeah, it's finals week and all that fun stuff, but

Speaker:

pretty soon you will be free and just be able to play baseball.

Speaker:

Like that is on the horizon for you.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

That's, that's what's, that's what's getting me through it.

Speaker:

Almost there.

Speaker:

Almost there.

Speaker:

Can see the light.

Speaker:

Awesome.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, Brody, we greatly appreciate your time.

Speaker:

Yes.

Speaker:

Uh, congrats on the win today and, and getting a couple hits and, and, you

Speaker:

know, playing a big, big part in that comeback win today to win this series.

Speaker:

So thanks so much, Brody.

Speaker:

Thank, thanks for having me on.

Speaker:

Have a good day, y'all.

Speaker:

Yeah, Brody.

Speaker:

Appreciate you, man.

Speaker:

Take care.

Speaker:

Oh, that's all right.

Speaker:

He's

Speaker:

a good kid, man.

Speaker:

Uh, he's, he's a dog.

Speaker:

He's, I didn't get bring up, but he's, you know, shoot for four today, he's four of

Speaker:

his last six with a double and two RBIs.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Um, and, and two runs scored in that time.

Speaker:

And he's, you know, he, he doesn't get a lot of chances, but it's one of those,

Speaker:

like, every time, I think last year we talked about it a few times where

Speaker:

it's like every time you see him we're like, man, there should be a way to

Speaker:

get this guy in the, in the game more.

Speaker:

And again, it's hard right now.

Speaker:

He plays second and third, um, and you got Zadalis and, and Stallings, um, but he

Speaker:

should definitely be a pinch hit option.

Speaker:

I mean, he's a guy that you just, he's a gamer.

Speaker:

He's just one of those guys that when you see him, if you get to see, I think if

Speaker:

you got to see him play over the course of like a whole weekend, it's like you'd

Speaker:

like him a lot and he's just who he is.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And, you know, I, I said on last week's podcast, I was standing

Speaker:

behind the, the screen watching the guys take batting practice- Yeah.

Speaker:

... and Rody Connors was pretty consistently having the hardest hit balls there

Speaker:

and hitting them to center, left center gap, right center gap.

Speaker:

I mean, really crushing the baseball.

Speaker:

So I was glad to see that pay off and-

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

... you know, he, he gets to start today and he steps up in a big way and it pays off.

Speaker:

I mean, going two for four is not an easy thing to do.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, sometimes in college baseball with the, the guys that are throwing out there.

Speaker:

All right, well, we're gonna take a quick break.

Speaker:

We're gonna get back.

Speaker:

We're gonna talk players of the week.

Speaker:

We got another, uh, ODU player hopping on potentially, so we may have that,

Speaker:

but we'll be back here in just a minute.

Contact the ODAF and become a member today.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Welcome back.

Speaker:

Thanks Blaine.

Speaker:

Thanks, Blaine, as always.

Speaker:

Uh, we got a Maddox Jack here in just a minute.

Speaker:

Um, but I want to show one thing because I will forget later

Speaker:

and I'm hoping to do this now.

Speaker:

But you got potentially my favorite photo that I've ever

Speaker:

seen at OD Baseball and you got.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Oh yeah, that's

Speaker:

fun.

Speaker:

It's fun.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And you, you didn't notice Bud was in the background at the

Speaker:

time?

Speaker:

No, what's, that's so funny is, yeah, I was just happy that like, because I'm kind

Speaker:

of looking down the line at an angle where the net really could be a problem, and

Speaker:

so I was just happy Scotty was in focus.

Speaker:

It's a pretty cool shot of him making a hard catch.

Speaker:

And then, you know, you crop it and share it that way.

Speaker:

I'm like, oh, I didn't realize the picture of Buds in the background

Speaker:

like made it look even better.

Speaker:

Like, I'm just totally focused.

Speaker:

It's kind of what I'm, I'm focused on the guy.

Speaker:

Like, I'm not the artistic photographer.

Speaker:

I'm, I'm focused on, I want the player doing the thing they're doing so

Speaker:

them and their family can enjoy them.

Speaker:

Um, you know, it's not about being an artist or whatever, I think, which,

Speaker:

yeah, some of the photographers do that and they're phenomenal at it.

Speaker:

I'm not gonna, it's just not who I am.

Speaker:

Um, but yeah, so it's funny that you did that, you're like, "You didn't see that?

Speaker:

" I

Speaker:

mean, it's, it was kind of like a foreshadowing for what was about to

Speaker:

occur because he hits the walk off- Yeah.

Speaker:

in this game against VCU, hits the walk off today.

Speaker:

Uh, it's all out there on social media and, you know, feel free to take a look.

Speaker:

If you're listening on audio, only hop over to YouTube real

Speaker:

quick and, and check it out.

Speaker:

But, uh, I just, just thought it was just the perfect picture and then for what's

Speaker:

transpired, it's even more fitting now.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's great.

Speaker:

So.

Speaker:

Good job, CB.

Speaker:

We appreciate it.

Speaker:

I like when I do cool stuff.

Speaker:

Yeah, it's, it's fun.

Speaker:

I mean, I really enjoy it.

Speaker:

I get to go to games and hang out and watch sports and take pictures and,

Speaker:

you know, it's, it's a cool thing.

Speaker:

I said, you know, a lot of the players, some of, a lot of them appreciate

Speaker:

it now, but I was like, no, I was, I was talking to Garrett Spar's

Speaker:

dad before, uh, Grayson Sparkary.

Speaker:

Grace and Spahr's dad before the game and I said, you know, they'll, they'll

Speaker:

appreciate it more than a few years.

Speaker:

Like, you know, parents, everybody, y'all appreciate it now, which is,

Speaker:

you know, so it's, how it goes.

Speaker:

It's cool.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

They'll have all those for their LinkedIn photos and stuff later on if

Speaker:

they're not playing pro ball somewhere.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Awesome.

Speaker:

Well, we want to bring on our second guest of the episode today.

Speaker:

Maddox, Jack, welcome to the show, sir. This guy.

Speaker:

Hey, what's up, guys?

Speaker:

Thanks for having me

Speaker:

on.

Speaker:

We're going, we're going to the three man front here.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

Figure out

Speaker:

how

Speaker:

too much face.

Speaker:

Keep sliding away.

Speaker:

We good?

Speaker:

Have this back a little bit or something.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Maddox, how you feeling after the game today?

Speaker:

Feeling good, man.

Speaker:

I'm pretty pumped up after that win.

Speaker:

It was a pretty exciting win there.

Speaker:

Hey guys.

Speaker:

Yeah, how do you like that?

Speaker:

You get two walk offs, giving you two, two victories on your, on your ledger.

Speaker:

That's, that's pretty neat, man.

Speaker:

Oh yeah, I know, man.

Speaker:

It's exciting.

Speaker:

First two career victories of my college career, so it's exciting.

Speaker:

So Scotty Young is gonna eat ev- eat at the Max house or the,

Speaker:

the Jackhouse forever, right?

Speaker:

I know, right?

Speaker:

I know, right?

Speaker:

Just

Speaker:

drop in anytime and have dinner, you guys, like, we have to give him food, I guess.

Speaker:

I guess, yeah.

Speaker:

It's pretty exciting.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's great, man.

Speaker:

Maddox, you come in, you get the final two outs of the game here, earning the win.

Speaker:

Uh, take us through kind of getting ready in the bullpen.

Speaker:

What were you guys talking about?

Speaker:

And then of course, once you got on the mound, uh, what

Speaker:

was your mindset from there?

Speaker:

Yeah, so I knew I was coming in if, if Sulpizio got in a sticky situation, so

Speaker:

I was just out there, me and Pawn get in the pin working, just got in there

Speaker:

and I knew I had to do my job to get those two outs and I, I knew as soon

Speaker:

as I got those two outs that we were gonna come back in and score and do

Speaker:

what we did against VCU, which is cool.

Speaker:

Would you, would you call it CB earlier quiet confidence with this team now?

Speaker:

That sounds like it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's what, yeah, that's what it feels like.

Speaker:

I felt really confident going into the bottom of the ninth there with those

Speaker:

guys and the situation we had for sure.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And that's when they were coming in from the field.

Speaker:

I was like, all right, we get it right here.

Speaker:

We're walking it off.

Speaker:

Let's go.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That's what I was feeling too.

Speaker:

So Maddux, have you been getting meaner?

Speaker:

'Cause I mean, I know you're like a nice, you are, Maddux is no, I'm not even

Speaker:

like, Joe Maddox is one of the nicest human beings I think I've ever met.

Speaker:

Like you, like his face right now, he's smiling, that's like always smiling.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I think Finny even said that at one point, like, I think

Speaker:

Maddox needs a little meaner.

Speaker:

Are you get, are you feeling like you're getting meaner on the mound?

Speaker:

Man, I feel, I feel like in the mound I'm a little different.

Speaker:

I'm a different guy.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Going to get into someone's, you know, but you know, person, I like to be who I am.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Change a little bit on the mound.

Speaker:

You get the Ricky Vaughn when you come in from the bullpen now.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, what, what is your music when you come out?

Speaker:

I can't remember off the top of my head.

Speaker:

It's, uh, it's a rapper.

Speaker:

It's Louisi Vert.

Speaker:

It's, uh, called 20 Minutes.

Speaker:

Sure.

Speaker:

Vinny isn't too big of a fan of it, I reckon, but- Oh.

Speaker:

It's for you, so it's all right.

Speaker:

It'll be okay.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

All I know about that guy is it, it seems like the most ... I mean, obviously

Speaker:

it's a made up name, but it's like the most made up name of all made up names.

Speaker:

It's like little Uzi for ... You just, that was like, like you just had like the

Speaker:

word board and just threw darts at it.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

The, the youth seemed to like it, so we're not gonna ... I don't

Speaker:

know, I don't even know a song to, to comment on it other than- Gets a

Speaker:

little rhythm going.

Speaker:

Sure.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

Whatever it is, it, it's work for you.

Speaker:

Uh, two outings in a row here getting a walk off wind behind you too.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's pretty good.

Speaker:

So, yeah, can't, can't change it now even if you stop like Nancy, sorry.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well- Yeah, so, well, well, speaking of that, you, you've had a, a pretty

Speaker:

great season for having, you know, missed last year with the, with the

Speaker:

injury, recovering this year you had a few weeks ago, a couple of hiccups,

Speaker:

like you had, I think it was Georgia Southern Eastern, East Carolina.

Speaker:

That's about it.

Speaker:

And then you've been right back to ... So what, what do you think was

Speaker:

going on that kind of caused that?

Speaker:

And then how have you gotten back to where you were when you started the year?

Speaker:

Well, those two, obviously they weren't my best performances.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

And me and Marin met after those performances and just talked

Speaker:

about what I needed to lock in and fix and almost be like more

Speaker:

focused and attacking the hitters.

Speaker:

I felt like I was kind of a little back and not being who

Speaker:

I am as a pitcher, you know?

Speaker:

And like we kind of just look back at what I used to be as a pitcher

Speaker:

and it was just like I need to get back there and attack the hitters.

Speaker:

And, you know, I just feel like I was lacking a little bit of

Speaker:

confidence that I usually have.

Speaker:

So it was like, I, the last couple outings I've just been, man, just letting

Speaker:

loose and being free and being who I am and who I know I am as a pitcher and

Speaker:

just attacking the guys and going out there for a force and just knowing my

Speaker:

stuff's good and then I'm better, so

Speaker:

... I mean, sometimes that's the thing is like, failure's not bad

Speaker:

if you alert and grow from it.

Speaker:

Indeed.

Speaker:

I felt like I grew from those outings for sure.

Speaker:

I feel like it wasn't like I needed those outings, but like- Yeah.

Speaker:

... I definitely grown as a pitcher from those optics and took, took a lot of

Speaker:

lessons and a good talk with Marin and it helped down the road, I guess.

Speaker:

There you go.

Speaker:

That's what we want.

Speaker:

Well, we asked Brody this question a little while ago, so I asked you too,

Speaker:

with the weird schedule this weekend, two Friday, one Sunday, what'd you do on your

Speaker:

random off Saturday during the season?

Speaker:

Uh, so I mean, we still had to go to the field and get our work in.

Speaker:

Oh

Speaker:

yeah.

Speaker:

So Philly got my work in and my, my, my dad was here this weekend,

Speaker:

so I went and hanged out, uh, hung out with him and just went and ate.

Speaker:

Other than that, just hung out.

Speaker:

It was pretty gloomy day, so- Yeah.

Speaker:

... had a whole lot going on, but went to the field and then went and

Speaker:

got some food with my, my dad.

Speaker:

There you

Speaker:

go.

Speaker:

Not too bad.

Speaker:

It's pretty

Speaker:

solid off day.

Speaker:

I mean- That's not bad at all.

Speaker:

So, uh, I'm not, I'm honestly not sure if I ever knew exactly.

Speaker:

So you had an injury that caused you to miss last season.

Speaker:

What was that injury?

Speaker:

So the senior year of my high school, I didn't get to play at all and I, I

Speaker:

got, uh, the internal brace surgery.

Speaker:

It's not the, it's basically Tommy John, but not the same.

Speaker:

I got the internal brace and completely missed my senior year

Speaker:

high school and then got that surgery in the May of 2024, so year two.

Speaker:

Yeah, so it took about a year of recovery.

Speaker:

Yeah, okay.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So how do you, how I mean, do you feel like you're kind of back to how you were?

Speaker:

I mean, hopefully, obviously more, you know, physically mature and,

Speaker:

and have learned some things, but do you feel like physically you're

Speaker:

kind of back to being yourself?

Speaker:

Phys- physically I feel better than ever lately.

Speaker:

Like my body's better, my arm, my strength, I feel a lot like better than

Speaker:

I did coming back, so that's a plus.

Speaker:

Had to be rough to go two years not playing when that's

Speaker:

like your thing, right?

Speaker:

It was, it was difficult for sure.

Speaker:

I mean, taking two years off of baseball, it really-

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

... perspective and changed my identity for sure.

Speaker:

Well, and last year had to be strange too because like you guys who were

Speaker:

red shirting, you really weren't like dressing with the team, you really

Speaker:

weren't like tra- like you guys didn't go on the road, you even, even here

Speaker:

at, at Harbor Park and, and y'all were in the stands a lot of times.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

That had to have been strange too.

Speaker:

It, it was odd.

Speaker:

It was different for sure for me and some of those guys.

Speaker:

It was.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So it's, I mean, it's nice to, gotta be great to feel like, okay, now I'm, I am

Speaker:

part of the team and contributing, right?

Speaker:

Oh yeah, it's a blast, especially traveling with the guys and being a

Speaker:

part of a team like this, it's fun.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I mean, if, if they're all like this week, I mean, you're set, right?

Speaker:

Oh yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah, that's a good, good weekend right there.

Speaker:

Yeah, definitely.

Speaker:

Well, tell us a little bit about what your pitches, what you're throwing and,

Speaker:

and like what's your pitch you throw and I just, I gotta have a strike right here.

Speaker:

So lately I've been more of like a fastball slider using

Speaker:

the four seam fastball and then going with that gyro slider.

Speaker:

And then I also have a curve ball on the chains up, so yeah,

Speaker:

throwing that hard gyro slider.

Speaker:

Gi- what makes it a gyro slider because I do not even begin to know-

Speaker:

It's not, it doesn't have the sweep.

Speaker:

It's more of like the, the bullet stuff.

Speaker:

Okay.

Speaker:

Hmm.

Speaker:

Interesting.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's the same one as like Kellen, Kellen and, uh, Darren.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Oh,

Speaker:

okay.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Interesting.

Speaker:

This is where pitchers have too much time in their hands.

Speaker:

They just come up with new names for things and-

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

I was

Speaker:

actually-

Speaker:

That was actually a pitch we, uh, built over the off season.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's pretty cool.

Speaker:

That's great, man.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

So, um, how, so you're from Hickory, North Carolina.

Speaker:

Um- Not too far away, not quite, we had, we had to Brody on minute goes

Speaker:

from the other side of the country.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh, but still, how, how did you end up at Old Dominion?

Speaker:

Oh, so I mean, I was getting recruited my freshman year of high school.

Speaker:

I committed here actually sophomore year before my high school season,

Speaker:

so I committed here really early.

Speaker:

That's a really,

Speaker:

yeah.

Speaker:

I remember coming here visiting a few times and then going to

Speaker:

a camp and I was talking about- Yeah, I can remember seeing you

Speaker:

at the camp, yeah.

Speaker:

I was talking to several, several colleges and I remember like

Speaker:

at that time, you can't really, you can't really come on visit.

Speaker:

So I came to the camps and met with the staff and I felt like me and Maren

Speaker:

clicked the first call we had together and it was pretty cool connection that

Speaker:

we had and yeah, so I thought this was the spot to be at and I felt like

Speaker:

this would help my development in a different way than the other schools

Speaker:

and just that connection with Marin and then initially Robin, uh, Logan Robbins

Speaker:

recruited me as well, so but- Wow.

Speaker:

Yeah, so I committed here a long

Speaker:

while.

Speaker:

It was an early commit.

Speaker:

Like we keep, yeah, we keep hearing Fineman lately and then

Speaker:

yeah, you don't hear a lot of-

Speaker:

Yeah, actually yeah,

Speaker:

Rogan

Speaker:

came to a lot of my games early on as a freshman and then like once

Speaker:

we started to keep going into our games, he got a connection with Marin

Speaker:

and then me and Marin just clicked.

Speaker:

That's great, man.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, obviously a long journey back for you to get to this season to where

Speaker:

you're throwing so much, but what was the toughest part of that like recovery and

Speaker:

rehab to get back to where you are now?

Speaker:

Toughest part, man.

Speaker:

It was just being away from baseball and having to figure out who I am

Speaker:

without it was definitely a struggle for me and, but yeah, I felt like,

Speaker:

uh, it's made me who I am and made me a, like a better baseball player.

Speaker:

So, I mean, but it was definitely tough being away from it and watching these

Speaker:

guys go out and play and me not able to compete, especially my senior year, just

Speaker:

missing all of that was, it, it, it hurt a little bit, but it was, it was good

Speaker:

for the long road and it just made me who I am today as a pitcher and player, so

Speaker:

I have to imagine, especially in high school, because I have to believe

Speaker:

you were probably the best pitcher on the team also, so not having that,

Speaker:

that the team probably didn't have quite as much success as maybe you

Speaker:

could have if you were available.

Speaker:

So yeah, that's the kind of thing.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It was, it was definitely difficult, especially for the guys around me.

Speaker:

Right.

Speaker:

But I do like, I love that the reality of like being forced to come

Speaker:

to that realization that, you know, you are a person without baseball.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

And I think personally, a, a fantastic person.

Speaker:

I think you're one of the, one of the best guys.

Speaker:

Um, and so having that, being able to know that in yourself that like, "Hey,

Speaker:

I want this to work because I love this thing, but also whenever it's done,

Speaker:

you know, whether it's, you know, 20 years from now, if it's two years from

Speaker:

now, three years or whatever it is, um, you'll still be a great person.

Speaker:

That, that's a big, that's a big deal." Yeah.

Speaker:

Sometimes guys don't realize that.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It really sh- once I got injured, it really shifted

Speaker:

my perspective of everything.

Speaker:

It's changed my perspective of life and who I am and what I, what

Speaker:

I do and why I'm here, you know?

Speaker:

It's good, man.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, well, how excited are you to be playing in the new stadium

Speaker:

next year and finally be done with all this construction?

Speaker:

Oh man, I'm excited.

Speaker:

It's crazy to see all the work they got going on back there

Speaker:

and the progress they're making.

Speaker:

So I'm excited for that new locker room and everything-

Speaker:

Oh, I'm sure.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It's been cool, but it's, it's gonna be, it's gonna be cool.

Speaker:

It's gonna be cool.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

But I feel like it kinda makes us the team we are right now with how

Speaker:

we're, the conditions we're in.

Speaker:

I feel like it gives us little of that grit, you know?

Speaker:

Yeah,

Speaker:

the lunch pail thing, right?

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

A year of being road warriors, then you come home and it's like

Speaker:

this modified home with all kinds of power tools going on behind you

Speaker:

during midweeks and things like that.

Speaker:

So-

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

You, you will be like, you're gonna be too comfy in the new ballpark.

Speaker:

I feel like you gotta rip up some of the, the couches or

Speaker:

something in the locker room.

Speaker:

Put some pine tar on, we'll be good to go.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It'd be great.

Speaker:

Well, Max, we, we appreciate you, man.

Speaker:

We're, it's been very exciting to see you have the success you've had, um,

Speaker:

you know, again, because you're just, you're an awesome guy and knowing that

Speaker:

what you had to fight through to get to, it makes it even more great to see.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Thank you.

Speaker:

Thank you, Stevie.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Thanks so much, Maddox.

Speaker:

We appreciate it.

Speaker:

Uh, good luck next week and I hope to see you again here soon.

Speaker:

All right.

Speaker:

Thank you guys for having me.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

All right, thanks.

Speaker:

Thanks, Max.

Speaker:

Appreciate you, man.

Speaker:

See you guys.

Speaker:

See

Speaker:

you.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Literally the nicest kid.

Speaker:

He really, I mean, like, he, you saw you smiling the entire time.

Speaker:

Like, that's, he's all, like, he's never not smiling.

Speaker:

It's so, like, what a good guy.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

It, it, you'd love to see the guys who have had those injuries and had

Speaker:

to, you know, fight their way back.

Speaker:

And then you're hearing about missing, you had to miss your whole senior year and

Speaker:

then your whole freshman year and then, and didn't even really get to be like

Speaker:

I mean, this year, some of the guys that aren't playing or heard, they're

Speaker:

in the dugout and all still, it's like, man, that's, uh, that's, that's rough.

Speaker:

And for him to come through it is, is awesome.

Speaker:

So that's a lot about who he is as a person.

Speaker:

Yeah, definitely.

Speaker:

It was really funny you asked, did you get meaner?

Speaker:

And just his face lit up with a big smile, and I was like, "Well, I think

Speaker:

that answers your question, right?"

Speaker:

It's like who said I mean?

Speaker:

Yeah, who said you- Big

Speaker:

smile.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Uh-

Speaker:

Nobody Max, nobody ever would.

Speaker:

Yeah.

Speaker:

Well, we definitely appreciate, uh, Brody and Maddox hopping

Speaker:

on with us during finals week, literally a couple hours- Yes.

Speaker:

after the game is over, so greatly appreciate

Speaker:

that.

Speaker:

I'm literally asking them as we're like leaving the field, like, "Hey, are you

Speaker:

available?" Like, typically we have a little more, this was just kinda, you

Speaker:

know, just things ha- you know, obviously schedules happened, this is how it had to

Speaker:

go, and frankly, I think it's fantastic.

Speaker:

A couple of great guests, and we're doing great.

Speaker:

I think

Speaker:

it's, it's worked out perfectly, and it is completely my fault, because I have

:

30 flight to Chicago for work in the morning and will not be available, but-

:

We went to Chicago.

:

I, somebody asked earlier, and I was like, I'm not, in my head, I

:

was like, Chicago, but I had, I was not confident enough to say that.

:

Yeah.

:

It's, uh, yeah, I was, I'm disappointed for two reasons.

:

One, PJ Higgins got sent down to AAA by the Reds.

:

Yeah.

:

And I'm going to a Cubs Reds game while I'm up there.

:

And the other side, I think the, the highest temperature I'm going

:

to see is like 55 or 56 with wins, so basically- Give me like

:

80 here, be nice again.

:

Yeah, naturally.

:

Naturally, that's how it works out.

:

But-

:

Well-

:

Flip over players of the week.

:

I was gonna say, speaking of nice again, uh, some guys did great.

:

So we actually, oh, look at us doing whatever, because we, we

:

make the rules, so- That's right.

:

So, uh, well, we'll start with Pitcher.

:

It was, the pitcher of the week, I think was pretty obvious.

:

Uh, Darin Kuskie, six shutout innings, uh, 11 strikeouts, so season high.

:

Um, he was, he was dominant, he was phenomenal.

:

Um, Maddox Jack was right there in the conversation, had two appearances,

:

two wins, uh, one and two thirds scoreless, um, one strikeout,

:

only gave up a hit and a walk.

:

Ben Tanton, as you pointed out, had a great appearance there, uh, and relief

:

of Kusky, um, got the save, three scoreless innings, no hits, a walk,

:

four strikeouts, um, and Sulpizio.

:

Sulpizio had a great week.

:

He had two games, um, five innings pitched, no runs, four

:

hits, no walks, three strikeouts.

:

Um, so coming off of, you know, having a, a rough time down there

:

at Georgia State, got right back on the horse and looked great.

:

So I mean, so again, the, the pitching is moving in the right

:

direction for a lot of guys.

:

Um, yeah, any comments you want to say on the pitching, I'm sorry.

:

Uh, just Darin was scary good on Friday.

:

Yeah.

:

Like, I mean, just blowing dudes away at the plate, they had

:

no idea where it was coming.

:

Uh, I think, like, he's been, I think he's been unlucky as a pitcher

:

too with some of his nasty pitches getting hit in, in several starts.

:

It was good to see that come together and really happy for Nick Sulpizio

:

to be able to bounce back- Yeah.

:

... from last week and just shove this week for us.

:

I mean, it says a lot about your mentality, right, that you're not packing

:

it in, you're not whining and, and moping and saying, "Oh, man, I'm terrible."

:

You're just like, "Hey, you know what?

:

That, that happened.

:

Get back at it, you know, they still need me.

:

" Yeah.

:

That's the reality.

:

Every guy, if you have bad outing, it's like, "Hey, man, sorry that happened,

:

but we got another one coming up and we need you. We need the whole staff."

:

Yep.

:

So everybody's been throwing easy to keep throwing.

:

Um, so as far as players of the week, so the, I guess the actual

:

player of the week for the hitters, uh, would have been Will Johnson.

:

Will, uh, had a great week.

:

I, I actually made this graphic with, with, uh, Kuskie and Will before

:

the game even today because I knew we had to have a quick turnaround.

:

Um, I just assumed he was gonna have another, he had two more

:

hits today, so he was on it.

:

Um, so Will was seven for 13, uh, two doubles, four RBIs, couple

:

of walks, hit by pitch, couple of runs, so just a great week.

:

You hit over 500, you're doing some, something correctly, right?

:

Yeah.

:

Yeah.

:

That'll, that'll work.

:

And played pretty great defense on top of that.

:

So, so Will is, uh, really a lot ... We've had some other guys that have kind

:

of been struggling and, and kind of moving in the wrong direction.

:

Will has been getting better as the year goes on, which is, is cool.

:

So, you know, and maybe that's being from Texas, it's getting warmer.

:

Uh, it's kind of the kind of thing that happened stalling the last couple years.

:

Amen have.

:

Yeah.

:

Um, so, well, speaking of Mav, he, he was on here list.

:

He was five out of 12 this week, had a double, uh, two runs, had

:

a steal, so he had a nice week.

:

Um, Efrain Morales, yet again, uh, seven for 16, a double, two

:

RBIs, a walk and hit by pitch.

:

So again, he's just continuing to be phenomenal.

:

Um, and then the guy who, who kinda literally shoved his way in the middle of

:

these two guys, we had to, we had to put him on the board here- ... Scotty Young.

:

Uh, Scotty, I mean, he was

:

So for the week, four for 12, four RBIs, a walk, hit by

:

pitch, a couple of runs scored.

:

Uh, but two of those four hits were walk off winners.

:

I mean, you can't do much better than that.

:

Uh, uh, I think what three of those four RBIs were, were walk off RBIs?

:

Yeah, they were.

:

Yeah.

:

So, I mean, that's, it's amazing.

:

Um, we, we hadn't had a walk off all last year and all the way up until,

:

what, a week or so ago, uh, now four last night have been walk offs.

:

I mean, that's, uh, one of our, one of our coaches, I don't want to call him out, one

:

of our coaches, you know, we're talking about the next homestand, uh, we're gonna

:

have JMU, and he was like, "I hope we walked them off three times." I was like,

:

"I personally wouldn't mind just like 10 nothing, you know, wins and, and, uh, just

:

seven run rule them, but, uh, you know, three walkie, he, he gets the assignment.

:

He understands we wanna beat them." Yeah.

:

Um, couple other guys point out ... Yeah, make it hurt.

:

Um, Jack Slater, uh, again, not a ton of chances, but two for three,

:

double RBI, a sacrifice, uh, and Brody Connors, two for four, the run scored.

:

Um, so a couple guys, you know, very limited time, but Slater

:

had, uh, big moments in both of the, um, the walkoffs, so

:

Yeah,

:

he had the big sack bun today to put the runner in score- Yeah.

:

... position to eventually win it.

:

Uh, and that was, that was a weird inning too because, uh, Arkansas State went

:

to the bullpen twice during the inning.

:

Yeah.

:

Uh, so it was really kind of a funky situation, but, you know,

:

Slater coming in kind of cold off the bench and get, does his job and

:

then sets it up for the game winner.

:

I mean-

:

If they hadn't have brought the rightie in to face Die, they wouldn't have pinched,

:

they would've been facing Di, um, and to ... I'll be honest, right now, Slater has just

:

been showing up better late in games, so you kinda worked right into where ... It's

:

almost like we banded him into that.

:

It did seem that way that there was some, there was some gamesmanship

:

going on that I don't think a lot of people caught onto there.

:

Mm-hmm.

:

Um, but worked out and Scotty coming up clutch.

:

I think we'll, we'll just make the rule in the podcast.

:

If you hit two walkoffs in one week, you get on the players on the week slide.

:

Yeah.

:

I mean, that's, yeah, that was ... I mean, well, it's like, I think what

:

was it Uh, last week when Nick had hit the, uh, the two home runs, my mom was,

:

uh, I was, I was there watching the game at their house and she's like,

:

"He's gotta be playing the week."

:

And I'm like, "Mom, I have to see the stats." And like- ... Realistically.

:

Fortunately, he did have enough hits the rest of the week.

:

But yeah, with Scott, he was like, yeah, he, you know, I, I, I wanted to

:

make sure Will gets his acknowledgement because Will was phenomenal.

:

Will is the, Will is the hitter of the week.

:

Uh, I didn't have enough to

:

If I had, if this was happening tomorrow, we'd have had some kind of

:

special, like, walk off player of the week for, for Scotty or something.

:

We just had to kind of shove him in there because it just happened kind of fast.

:

Yeah.

:

We've done, we've done

:

Bunter of the week before, so we can-

:

Yeah.

:

He definitely was gonna have his own.

:

Yeah.

:

And again, we make up the rules, we do whatever we want.

:

This is- Yeah.

:

We'll, I'll have 17 guys on the play of the week if I want.

:

I don't ... Whatever.

:

I'll put the whole picture of the damn team up there.

:

I don't, you can't stop me.

:

Yeah.

:

Um- You

:

have no power here.

:

So yeah, so big week, you know, three and one, uh, what, but again,

:

what matters more is won the series.

:

Uh, gonna play Richmond on Tuesday.

:

Uh, they, looks like they won their series.

:

Yeah, they won two out of three against Davidson this week.

:

Uh, they have not been much competition when they faced us.

:

We, well, I guess we, well, we walked them off.

:

They were competition that

:

one.

:

Yeah, we've, we've

:

had two, two ladies and come back against them as

:

well.

:

Yeah, that's fair.

:

All right.

:

So it does, maybe I'm just, I'm feeling that way because I don't ever think of

:

Richmond as being much competition, but we actually, you're right, we actually have

:

had to like beat them up a little bit.

:

Um-

:

Yeah.

:

And they took, uh, they took two out of three from VCU the weekend before.

:

They're, they're playing pretty good baseball right now.

:

They're playing a baseball on

:

the 810.

:

Yeah.

:

And then they won, actually won two out of three against Dayton.

:

They're on a roll actually.

:

Um, but we're gonna stop their role because, uh, Hunter Baynes is

:

about to start that game and gonna make the first guy, uh, tinkle

:

himself when he sees that in 98.

:

Uh, I, I kinda wanna tell him like just throw it at his head, but I

:

want him to make sure he knows that he's, he's throwing strikes, so.

:

Yeah.

:

Just kinda do like a nucleus and like have the, have, uh, whoever's

:

behind the plate, like, you know, I don't always know where it's going.

:

Give one of those.

:

Yeah.

:

So I think Mac- Mack or Slate can do that for sure.

:

E-Hole can too.

:

Yeah,

:

for sure.

:

Uh, but yeah, I guarantee they have not seen that kind of

:

Elo in the A- 10 this year.

:

Um, maybe some non-con, but definitely not in the A- 10.

:

Uh, in the Sunbelt now, everything is final.

:

Southern miss did beat Louisiana Monroe, so Louisiana Monroe

:

falls a game behind us.

:

Yeah.

:

Which is good.

:

You want those teams to be, you know, you want them to be a win or two behind you

:

and that way it's just more space for you.

:

So, yeah.

:

Yeah.

:

So we're, we're clearly, we're, we're coolly in a tie for seventh place-

:

Yep.

:

... uh, with two other teams.

:

Um-

:

Arkansas State and Marshall.

:

We are one game behind Louisiana who's 12 and 12 and sitting in the

:

sixth seat and we're two back of Troy, I guess technically really three

:

back from Troy with the tiebreaker.

:

Yeah.

:

Well, and then you got, um, four teams behind us at 10 and 14.

:

Yeah.

:

It's a lot.

:

I mean, the only, the only team that's really out of it is Georgia Southern.

:

Georgia Southern, I don't think has any avenue to come back.

:

I mean- I mean, if they won the last six games of the season, they'd be 12 and 18.

:

This doesn't seem like a record that's gonna get you in the tournament.

:

No, I mean, they're, they're not mathematically eliminated, but

:

they might as well be at this

:

point.

:

But they might as well be, yeah.

:

But everybody else, it's, it's still open.

:

You gotta go out and you gotta compete.

:

I mean, let's be honest, like, we would be a lot better off.

:

We went down there and beat Coastal.

:

Uh, and that would be something.

:

Yeah.

:

This, and, and as weirdly inconsistent as this team is, that's a possibility.

:

We know they're good.

:

We know when they play right, they're, they, they can play well and beat anybody.

:

Um, yeah, I don't, I'm not gonna sit here and be like, "Oh yeah, we're

:

definitely gonna lose the series or we gotta just hopefully win one."

:

It's like, no, we can win the series.

:

Why not?

:

Yeah.

:

I mean, uh, they've ... Coastal almost lost the series to

:

Georgia Southern this week.

:

Yeah.

:

I mean, they did three runs in the eighth inning to come back

:

and beat them in the first game.

:

They handled business in the, in their secon game of series.

:

Second one, yeah.

:

They tend run with them, but then they lost 74 in the finale against Flukey,

:

who, you know, was their starter obviously coming back from injury.

:

He's not, not what he was.

:

Right.

:

But they've lost, uh, a couple, three s- they've lost three Sunday games in a row

:

here, uh, with Georgia Southern, they lost a Texas state, uh, and they lost

:

the Georgia state and Arkansas states.

:

It's actually four straight, uh, Sunday losses.

:

So-

:

Which they hadn't, they even lost a game in conference before, they guess

:

they got five, so they maybe had, but-

:

They lost one Saturday game to South Alabama.

:

Yeah.

:

Uh, but that was, that was it.

:

And that was a weird game.

:

They lost 15 to two.

:

I believe that may have been a game one of their starters got hurt again.

:

That

:

hurt.

:

Um, but definitely, uh, you know, they're, they're clearly

:

top of the conference right now.

:

Um, you know, they're 19 and five.

:

They got a three game lead over Southern Miss who's 15 and eight or 15 to nine now.

:

Or no, they're 16- Well, how much

:

would Southern Miss love us if we went and swept them?

:

They would, they would be our best buddies.

:

Oh, yeah.

:

Yeah.

:

Um, that'd be fine.

:

That, that'd be a good bye product of, of going out there and doing that thing.

:

Yeah.

:

Uh, but really, like, if you're, if you're looking around the rest

:

of the scoreboard and you wanna go route for some other teams, just

:

root for the teams in the top four.

:

Coastal, Southernmiss, Appi, and, and South Alabama, and anyone

:

that's tied with us or below us.

:

I don't know what the matchups all are, but you, you need

:

them to lose or do something.

:

You need, you need to get clear the, clear the roadblock a little bit.

:

And again, all that's great, but if you don't go out and

:

win your games, doesn't matter.

:

Correct.

:

Number one priority.

:

Games left.

:

You got seven total games.

:

Uh, go out, you know, we've been, like I said, we've been doing these

:

walk-offs, we've been doing some winning, uh, been going better here

:

in the second part of the season.

:

I mean, what are we now?

:

We're, we're now ... We're still ... I mean, it's 24, 23, you know,

:

we're, we're kind of, that record I think is indicative of who we are.

:

We're a very- Yeah.

:

Who knows?

:

I think if it's a coin flip, right?

:

Um, and so we don't want that.

:

We wanna, we wanna show, have a good last seven games and show we're

:

not a coin flip or a winning team.

:

Um, I mean, you can get yourself to 30 wins if you have a good couple weeks here.

:

Yeah, you could.

:

Uh, you talk about a coin flip.

:

I mean, Friday's a perfect example of that.

:

Yeah.

:

Eight, nothing win in the first game, they can't do anything to us.

:

We lose the second one sixth to nothing and we can't do

:

anything right in that game.

:

Yeah.

:

So it's, it's funky, but I, I feel like we have to get one at coastal.

:

Like we have to get one, have to avoid being swept because then that's

:

gonna put us at 12 wins and give us a chance to get to 15 and 15 with JMU.

:

It'd be real great if we got two though and won that series.

:

It might, might screw over the rest of the conference come selection time, but I'm

:

not too concerned about that right now.

:

You know what?

:

We won't, uh, we're not getting that large bit this year anyway.

:

No.

:

So that's ... The, the more winning we do, the more chances we have of winning,

:

uh, when it matters down to tournament.

:

So yeah, win that series, then you're feeling really great going to JMU

:

and feeling really great going down the tournament and that's what you

:

want because that is your only path to playing more baseball after that.

:

We're trying to, we're trying to get more baseball and then more and more baseball.

:

Yes.

:

Yeah.

:

We need, we need to just keep it rolling because it's, uh, it's

:

gonna ... If we can somehow sneak into that 60 like we did last year-

:

mm-hmm.

:

I mean, that's a game changer, especially Hunter Bain's coming back into the fold.

:

We're getting some other guys healthy.

:

Uh, you know, Patrick Johnson being back again too, that's been helpful

:

to have him, um, and just, you know, guys coming in to form, like Gaddie's

:

looking good, Koski's looking good.

:

Like the pieces are there, but again, they've, they've

:

got to just go do the thing.

:

And you're seeing the bench is stronger.

:

I don't know that you're saying seeing like every number looks great, but

:

what you see is like, okay, so when there's a lefty starting, you can have

:

Grace and Sparr playing right field.

:

And then Scotty can come in later in the game when they bring a ready in.

:

Um, you're seeing, you know, Slater and Holman, you know, depending on the day,

:

either one of them can start and catch.

:

Um, and especially late, you know, against a Righty pitcher, you're seeing

:

Slater come in and, and pinch it because he's also, he can catch, he's played

:

first base, he's played outfield.

:

So you can pitch in him in several spots and kind of put him in some places.

:

Um, you see Brody Connors is showing some ability.

:

Um, and so he's able to come in and play second or third.

:

Um, and then, you know, Colin McKenna, it's been a while since he's been

:

in the field, but remember he's played second, he's played short.

:

Yep.

:

He's played third, he's played left field.

:

Um, he's, you know, pinch running, got some ability.

:

So you're seeing a little bit more versatility out of the bench and you're

:

kind of seeing how guys ... I think at this point, guys are understanding how

:

they fit in and then you see them kind of their, as they're in the, in the

:

game being aware of like, okay, this is probably what's going to happen.

:

You see him, you know, as they're moving around, getting ready and

:

understanding that like, okay, these things are going to happen.

:

And, and I think it's good from a, a coaching perspective of knowing like it's

:

the first time at the beginning of the year, it's kind of like, I guess I'll put

:

so- and-so in this spot because who knows.

:

And now it's like, okay, if this comes up, you know, Grace is gonna play.

:

If this comes up, Brody's gonna be there.

:

If this comes up, Jax's gonna pinch it.

:

Like this is having that, that sure thing, kind of the same thing's happening with

:

pitching, you know, like on a Friday, it's probably gonna be 10 at some point.

:

You know, you know, as you get later, it's, it's gonna be, you

:

know, Sapizio, it's gonna be, um, Kellen, gonna be Bailey, whoever.

:

Yeah.

:

Um, so seeing that, again, it takes a long time for, uh, a team to show

:

itself and it feels like they are.

:

Yeah.

:

We were just a little bit slower on that curve, I think this year.

:

Yeah.

:

And it, you know, you just think pack, you, you pick this up one week earlier,

:

two weeks earlier, you're having a completely different conversation

:

about where we are in the standings.

:

Yeah.

:

Um, you know, I won't harp on last Sunday's loss to Georgia State too

:

much, but like one game right now would have us tied with Louisiana for six.

:

Yeah.

:

So it, but, you know, there's probably a game or two weeks that

:

we probably should have lost.

:

So it all comes out in the wash eventually there, but-

:

Well, there's other games we should have, we should have, uh, won that we

:

lost that are for other parts of the, you can point to a bunch of other ones.

:

Yeah.

:

Oh, yeah.

:

There's, there's tons.

:

Yeah.

:

But I would rather be starting to look our best now than maybe like in Arkansas

:

state that came out of the gate super hot.

:

Yeah.

:

They're still playing good ball, but they're not playing what

:

they were earlier in the season.

:

I think Texas State is probably in a similar boat.

:

I know they lost at least two out of three to South Alabama this week.

:

Mm-hmm.

:

Um, but like starting to peak now would not be the worst thing, but the real

:

test, like, can you go on the road and beat the best team at the conference?

:

Yeah.

:

Like that's, that's your biggest test of the year, I think.

:

I mean, to your point, how many times in major leagues, um, you play this

:

162 game season and then it's whoever's hot in September, October is who wins.

:

I mean, they're just all of a sudden some, you know, I think the Marlins

:

did that, like their, their two times they won the World Series.

:

It's like they were not the best.

:

They were wild car teams and they, but they're hot, you know?

:

I mean, now the Dodgers have upended that the last couple

:

years by just being so much better than they won and more talented.

:

Billion dollars more talent than everybody else

:

at helps them.

:

You, you break the curve when like every other guy in your

:

lineup is a Hall of Famer, uh-

:

Yeah.

:

I look at like the Nationals when they won it in 2019.

:

Yeah.

:

I mean, they were well below 500 going into the middle of the season and they

:

came back and beat the best Astros team that's ever been assembled in, in 70.

:

Well,

:

and you know why because they made the best acquisition anybody could

:

have made was they, they picked up all Dominion alum, Daniel Hudson

:

and made him their closer and he was on the mile when they won.

:

So I, there's only, the only time somebody actually shared that with

:

me the other day, a picture of that, that was like, that's the only,

:

the only reason I was ever rooting for him was because for Huddy.

:

Um, and speaking of, um, just since we're talking about big league stuff

:

for a minute, uh, tonight, I, I think it's tonight, uh, is, um, Trey Gibson,

:

uh, who's local here from, from Gloucester up in, um, Newport News.

:

He is making his major league debut tonight for the Orioles.

:

Uh, so that's pretty, that's a guy.

:

I saw him pitch several times, uh, saw a couple of games and he, he, he

:

pitched against, uh, Gio Rivera who played Early Main for a little bit.

:

Um, and yeah, Trey is, he's one of those guys we really wanted, that's for sure.

:

Uh, but he was, you know, he decided, he decided to go to Liberty, and I would

:

say picking Liberty, you kind of got other stuff on your mind that you want

:

to go for, but good kid, good pitcher.

:

I mean, it's, it's cool to see a guy that you saw in high

:

school is now a big leaguer.

:

That's pretty neat to me.

:

Yeah.

:

Gloucester, middle peninsula up my way there a little bit.

:

Yeah.

:

Um, that's kind of wild to get a good baseball prospect out of there.

:

Yeah.

:

Um, yeah, it's not a, not a big area.

:

Yeah.

:

When you're, you're 6'6" and throw some cheese, you, you,

:

you, you're a good prospect.

:

They'll find you.

:

They will find you if you can do that.

:

Find you.

:

Yes.

:

Well, I'm hoping we, uh, we see Hunter Baynes back to form on Tuesday.

:

Yeah.

:

I hope everything is going well with, with that.

:

And that is still the plan.

:

Obviously, I guess I, I don't know 100% because Fenny's not here, but-

:

Yeah.

:

Uh-

:

Well, I talked to Hunter yet on Friday, it, they told me that was the plan.

:

But again, you know, who knows what happens between Friday and Tuesday, but

:

sounds like everything's good, sound like he feels good, and yeah, he seems excited.

:

Yeah, I'm, I'll be watching that from my phone somewhere while I'm supposed to

:

probably paying attention to something work related on this trip, but- There

:

you go.

:

Yeah, I'm not going to miss Hunter Baynes coming out with throw.

:

Yeah.

:

All right.
