Transcripts

Speaker:

We're introducing

ourselves to the neighbors.

2

:

Hopefully they won't say

there goes the neighborhood.

3

:

All right, but we are

new neighbors in town.

4

:

And as we were going around

meeting people in the area, that's

5

:

how I would introduce myself.

6

:

I said, Hey, we're your new neighbors

because our church is meeting right there.

7

:

And we hope that we can be a

blessing to the neighborhood to the

8

:

communities in which we worship in.

9

:

And so we're going to talk about

this idea of neighboring because

10

:

we've also had the opportunity.

11

:

To read a book together called the art

of neighboring and this book has been

12

:

really really good This is the the cover

right here And it really talks about the

13

:

idea of when Jesus says that the second

greatest command is to love your neighbor

14

:

as yourself What if we actually took that

literally and actually love the neighbor?

15

:

That we live next to And so it was

really good because we can kind of

16

:

over spiritualize it because Jesus

expands the idea and definition of our

17

:

neighbor, but now sometimes we can make

it so far out that we forget the people

18

:

that actually live right next to us.

19

:

And so we've been learning a lot

and it's been encouraging and

20

:

exciting and challenging in many

ways and very practical on how we

21

:

can love our neighbor as ourselves.

22

:

So let me ask you this question here

as we're thinking about neighbors.

23

:

What would be the ideal neighbor for you?

24

:

What would be the ideal neighbor for you?

25

:

Let's go ahead, let's get a couple

people to answer that, alright?

26

:

What would be the ideal neighbor for you?

27

:

Yes, Jayden?

28

:

Quiet.

29

:

I appreciate that.

30

:

See, if you're visiting here,

we keep it 100 up in here, okay?

31

:

We're honest.

32

:

I want them quiet.

33

:

I don't want them making loud noise.

34

:

Okay, alright, cool.

35

:

Alright, yes, in the back.

36

:

Who's that?

37

:

Gabe?

38

:

Yes.

39

:

Lots of power tools that seem to

have some type of self serving

40

:

intent behind that, right?

41

:

You can help me out.

42

:

Okay.

43

:

All right.

44

:

Yes.

45

:

Others.

46

:

Yes.

47

:

Friendly.

48

:

Okay.

49

:

Yes.

50

:

We want some friendly,

uh, neighbors there.

51

:

Okay.

52

:

Others.

53

:

What else?

54

:

Your, your ideal neighbor.

55

:

What would that be like?

56

:

Yes.

57

:

A good cook.

58

:

There you go.

59

:

Invite me on over, huh?

60

:

Every Thursday I'll be on over.

61

:

Come on.

62

:

All right.

63

:

There you go.

64

:

Yes.

65

:

One with the boats.

66

:

Okay, are you noticing a trend here?

67

:

Man, we love the neighbors that will

somehow provide some benefit for us.

68

:

Okay, alright, here we go,

alright, one more, yes.

69

:

When you would get along with.

70

:

Yes, yes, you definitely don't

want that neighbor that, mm hmm.

71

:

Yeah, that makes you pray, right?

72

:

Alright, so we want neighbors

we want to get along with.

73

:

Let me ask you this.

74

:

What would it be like if

Jesus was your neighbor?

75

:

Wow, all those who might

not have heard that online.

76

:

What would it be like if

Jesus was your neighbor?

77

:

Think about that for a second.

78

:

Some of us, we got scared.

79

:

I, we were talking with the kids, uh, kids

class teachers earlier and I asked that

80

:

question and she's like, I'd be scared.

81

:

Why would you be scared?

82

:

Uh, because Jesus is next door.

83

:

And so basically like I gotta make sure

I act right, you know, and so some of us

84

:

we might think that fear But let's think

about all of the ideal Characteristics

85

:

of our neighbors with Jesus perhaps have

some of those Maybe not power tools.

86

:

I don't know but it Earth

that was a carpenter, right?

87

:

So he probably does have some right?

88

:

I think he was friendly right quiet He

had a lot of people over probably you

89

:

know to me And so you think about it,

Jesus, there's so many things, yes, maybe

90

:

we're challenged, but also I think Jesus

would be a blessing to his neighbors.

91

:

I think Jesus would be a

blessing to his neighbors.

92

:

And so now as we start to think about

that, we can start to go ahead and hone

93

:

in and funnel in and think about what

does that mean for us as a church and what

94

:

does that mean for me and my neighborhood.

95

:

And so the title of the lesson,

we'll just stick with the book

96

:

here is The Arts of Neighboring.

97

:

The Arts of Neighboring.

98

:

Let's go to God in prayer.

99

:

Father, thank you so much for

allowing us to worship you already.

100

:

God, it's been encouraging to think about

the Holy Spirit filling up not only our

101

:

lives but this room with your presence.

102

:

Father, we've been able to think

about how you so love the world

103

:

that you gave your one and only son.

104

:

And father, we can think about

being in the river, how we come

105

:

alive in spiritual waters that Jesus

provides, but also the river, the

106

:

waters of salvation that saved us.

107

:

God, we're already so grateful for

the encouragement, the fellowship

108

:

that we've been able to have, the

new people that we've been able

109

:

to engage in conversation with.

110

:

God, I pray right now though, that

your spirit is not done working, that

111

:

you will communicate your message.

112

:

Father, that we will all come away

inspired by Jesus and father that we

113

:

will make decisions to be more aligned

with your will in Jesus name, amen, amen.

114

:

Let's go ahead.

115

:

Let's get into it.

116

:

So the first observation I

have here is that Jesus was

117

:

a blessing to his neighbors.

118

:

Jesus was a blessing to his neighbors.

119

:

Let's go to Matthew chapter four church.

120

:

Are you with me?

121

:

All right.

122

:

If you're not, if you first

time visiting here with this,

123

:

this is an interactive time.

124

:

And so we, we interact, right, that, I

don't just go over here and speak for a

125

:

couple of minutes, but I'm, we're gonna

have some conversations, right, and so I'm

126

:

gonna need you to say some good things.

127

:

Uh, please don't say any bad things,

okay, like get off the stage, please

128

:

don't say anything like that, alright?

129

:

But let's go ahead, let's

get into the scriptures.

130

:

This is Matthew chapter 4.

131

:

Matthew was a letter, uh, written

by one of Jesus followers.

132

:

He actually was a tax

collector, so think about it.

133

:

He used to work for the local IRS.

134

:

And so he was not a huge, uh,

uh, uh, you know, popular fan.

135

:

Uh, not popular fan.

136

:

He wasn't a popular

figure in his hometown.

137

:

However, Jesus calls him

to be a follower of his.

138

:

He becomes a Christian.

139

:

And then he has the privilege and

honor of being able to write down

140

:

a lot of Jesus Ministry in life.

141

:

And so here we have this letter

that we call the book of Matthew.

142

:

And so it says in Matthew chapter

4 verse 12 when Jesus heard that

143

:

John had been put in prison He

withdrew to Galilee leaving Nazareth.

144

:

He went up to live in Capernaum Which

was by the lake in the area of Zebulun

145

:

and Naphtali, and Naphtali, excuse me,

to fulfill what was said through the

146

:

prophet Isaiah Land of Zebulun and land

of Naphtali The way of the sea, beyond

147

:

the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles, the

people living in darkness have seen a

148

:

great light on those living in the land of

the shadow of death, a light has dawned.

149

:

From that time on, Jesus began

to preach, repent for the

150

:

kingdom of heaven has come near.

151

:

So I wanted to get a little

picture here of the scene.

152

:

So this is Galilee, this is the

area during the time of Jesus.

153

:

And as you can see there, this is

where Jesus, he first was in Nazareth,

154

:

but he says he moved up to Capernaum,

and here's the Sea of Galilee.

155

:

And so he moves in there, and

so this is his neighborhood.

156

:

He moves into town, he's like, uh, our

church, we're moving into Placentia.

157

:

So this is his new neighborhood.

158

:

And so we get a glimpse now of what he

was like as a neighbor in his community.

159

:

And so what happens, he first

calls his, uh, first disciples.

160

:

To follow him.

161

:

And so now he has a group of people

that are following him and we take it

162

:

up in verse 23 Church Are you with me?

163

:

Okay, Matthew chapter 4 verse 23 Jesus

went throughout Galilee Teaching in their

164

:

synagogues proclaiming the good news of

the kingdom and healing every disease

165

:

and sickness among the people News about

him spread all over Syria and people

166

:

brought to him all who were ill with

various diseases those suffering severe

167

:

pain The demon possessed those having

seizures and the paralyzed and he healed

168

:

them large crowds from the Galilee, the

Decapolis, Jerusalem, Judea, and the

169

:

region across the Jordan followed him.

170

:

Let's stop right there.

171

:

What's taking place?

172

:

Jesus is going around.

173

:

He's teaching.

174

:

He's preaching.

175

:

He's healing.

176

:

And not only is he hitting up his own

local town of Capernaum, but he says

177

:

he's going around all of Galilee.

178

:

And what happens is that in this area,

now other people start hearing about him.

179

:

And so we have another map right here.

180

:

And so again, remember,

he is in Capernaum.

181

:

But now it says people from Syria.

182

:

So that's up here.

183

:

Now Syria are coming.

184

:

Then it says the Decapolis.

185

:

There's a bunch of cities over here.

186

:

Then it says beyond the Jordan River.

187

:

So probably most likely the

east of the Jordan River.

188

:

Then it says all the way down to

Judea, right here in this area,

189

:

and all the way to Jerusalem.

190

:

Now this is a nice little

trek, wouldn't you agree?

191

:

And so Jesus, remember

he's just over here.

192

:

He's going around being a

neighbor, hitting up this area.

193

:

However, people from all around are

hearing about this and now want to

194

:

know some more about this man who's

preaching, teaching, and healing.

195

:

And so what do we see?

196

:

What can we take note of?

197

:

Well, let me ask you this question.

198

:

What happened to the communities

and neighborhoods that Jesus

199

:

lived in and was a part of?

200

:

Well we see that there was healing,

there was teaching of God's

201

:

truth, there was a message being

preached by Jesus of empowerment,

202

:

of hope, and of transformation.

203

:

And Jesus touched those who were lonely.

204

:

He reached out to those who

were suffering emotionally.

205

:

He helped those who were

hopeless and in pain.

206

:

Those who had lost their faith

or maybe drifted in their faith.

207

:

Those who maybe had money but yet

had family members that were now

208

:

outcasts or maybe on the outside

everything looked good but on the

209

:

inside things were in turmoil.

210

:

And Jesus teaches, He

preaches, and He heals.

211

:

People are affected.

212

:

Lives are impacted.

213

:

Lives are changed forever.

214

:

People's faith in God is different now.

215

:

Whoa, there's a God who is doing something

incredible through this carpenter's son.

216

:

As we can see, neighbors

were blessed by Jesus.

217

:

So what would it look like if Jesus lived

on your streets, lived in your complex?

218

:

Live on your block.

219

:

You know, it's incredible as I was looking

at this and thinking about this, and there

220

:

was this song that we were in the car

the other day, and it hit me, I was like,

221

:

you know, this is exactly what Jesus did.

222

:

You know, he was in the public squares,

he was in the synagogues, he was out

223

:

on the mountains, he was in the plains,

he was preaching to large people.

224

:

However, what he did is that he went And

he turns living rooms into life rooms.

225

:

Jesus turned living rooms into life rooms.

226

:

You see, he did a lot of stuff in

the public arena like we have here.

227

:

But then we know there were

countless times in which something

228

:

incredible took place in a home.

229

:

That's where much of

his teaching took place.

230

:

Much of his training took place.

231

:

And many healings took place.

232

:

You can go ahead and

take a picture of this.

233

:

Here are some, some examples.

234

:

There's so many in scripture,

but here are some examples.

235

:

With Peter's mother in law, he healed her.

236

:

In Jairus house, he raised

his daughter from the dead.

237

:

The paralytic was also healed

and as well as he taught there.

238

:

Zacchaeus house.

239

:

He brought salvation to

him and his household.

240

:

Simon the Pharisee's house, he's

anointed by the woman there.

241

:

And then he uses that opportunity

to teach about forgiveness.

242

:

Mary and Martha's house, he teaches

and brings them to be disciples,

243

:

which was radical to have women

disciples during that time.

244

:

But he teaches them the

importance of following his word.

245

:

And not only did he do this, but

then he called his disciples.

246

:

To also turn living rooms into life rooms.

247

:

You see, he goes and he,

he, he, he sends out 12.

248

:

And the Bible records

where he sends out 12.

249

:

And then he has another

time where he sends out 72.

250

:

And they're supposed to go

preach and teach and heal.

251

:

And look what it says here when he

gives them some direction about what

252

:

they should do as he sends them out.

253

:

When you enter a house, first

say peace to this house.

254

:

If someone who promotes peace is

there, your peace will rest on them.

255

:

If not, it will return to you.

256

:

Stay there eating and drinking

whatever they give you, for

257

:

the worker deserves his wages.

258

:

Do not move around from house to house.

259

:

When you enter a town and are

welcomed, eat what is offered to you.

260

:

Heal the sick who are there and tell them

the kingdom of God has come near to you.

261

:

You see, Jesus had modeled it.

262

:

They were along with him, a

part of all of these things

263

:

that he was doing in the home.

264

:

And he says, all right, now when

it's your turn, I want you to go out.

265

:

You're going to reach the masses, but

you also need to make sure that you

266

:

turn those living rooms into life rooms.

267

:

You see, there was perhaps in the public

square information or inspiration, but

268

:

in the homes, it was transformation.

269

:

And so we're out.

270

:

Yes, I want to inspire the masses.

271

:

And yes, there was transformation

in the public square.

272

:

Don't get me wrong.

273

:

But this is going to be where I give

information or I give inspiration, but

274

:

it's in the home where we're eating

and breaking bread together, where

275

:

we're talking, connecting, relating.

276

:

That's when a transformation

is going to take place.

277

:

That's when I'm going to heal those.

278

:

That's when I'm going to give

these an opportunity to teach about

279

:

the depth of the kingdom of God.

280

:

And he says, not only me,

but you guys do the same.

281

:

You see the art of neighboring

for Jesus was transformation.

282

:

In the homes, life together,

service, God's word, and

283

:

connection through relationship.

284

:

So what would it be like for

Jesus to be your neighbor today?

285

:

Well, in many ways, and definitely in

a spiritual sense, Jesus is present

286

:

in your neighborhood and block today.

287

:

Amen?

288

:

Might not be recognized,

but he is present.

289

:

But let me ask you this.

290

:

What would happen if your neighborhood,

your street, Your block, your

291

:

community had a neighbor like Jesus.

292

:

What would happen then?

293

:

It hit me so hard as I thought

about this question and I thought,

294

:

Whoa, here's the crazy part.

295

:

Here's the phenomenal part.

296

:

Is that the church, God's people, Have

the opportunity to continue the legacy

297

:

and example of Jesus By being a blessing

to our own neighborhoods as well.

298

:

You and I have the opportunity to

continue the legacy, to continue

299

:

the example of Jesus by being

a blessing to our neighbors.

300

:

That was so incredible.

301

:

It stood out to me.

302

:

I thought, wow.

303

:

Because think about this.

304

:

What if a bunch of people, let's

say a bunch of people who, who,

305

:

who follow Jesus teachings and

example decided, you know what?

306

:

I'm going to actually love my

neighbor the way I love myself.

307

:

What if a bunch of people in our

neighborhoods who claim to believe in

308

:

Jesus and follow his teachings decided,

you know what, I'm going to actually

309

:

love my neighbor as I love myself.

310

:

What might happen in that community?

311

:

What might happen on your

block and in your complex?

312

:

If you, those in our church, those

outside of our church, what if

313

:

we all decided, you know what?

314

:

Let's follow Jesus teaching and example

and let's apply it to our neighborhood.

315

:

You think there might be a difference?

316

:

At worst case scenario, worst

case scenario, there's now a

317

:

truer sense of community because

we're engaging with each other.

318

:

We now feel a sense of

safety with each other.

319

:

We now feel a sense of good

obligation for one another.

320

:

Because we have a

relationship with one another.

321

:

And we're looking out for the

greater good of the community.

322

:

At best, many souls will

come to saving faith.

323

:

But man, even if I just get the worst

case scenario, I'll settle for that.

324

:

And you see, you and I, we

have a great opportunity.

325

:

To be a part of something that can

impact communities and lives that will

326

:

lead to change for all of eternity.

327

:

And so what can you and I do today?

328

:

I believe we can do this.

329

:

Let's turn living rooms into life rooms.

330

:

Let's turn our living

rooms into life rooms.

331

:

Yes, in the physical sense, in our homes,

having people over, people in the church,

332

:

our friends over, our neighbors over.

333

:

Yes, let's apply that to this, to this

area of our lives very practically.

334

:

But let's also apply it where it

becomes a mentality of hospitality.

335

:

Or even if I'm walking down the street,

yes, I might not have the time or

336

:

capability to invite you over for a

meal, but I want to be hospitable to you.

337

:

What if we had that mentality?

338

:

Well, we're going to share life together.

339

:

We're going to break bread together.

340

:

We're going to be

hospitable to one another.

341

:

To those in my neighborhood, to

my neighbors, to my friends, to

342

:

those in our churches, what we call

them, family groups and beyond.

343

:

I believe we will see some change and I

think every soul will be blessed by it.

344

:

And so how can we do this?

345

:

Let's get real practical here.

346

:

Engage, listen and offer support.

347

:

The very first thing I appreciate

in the book is that, you know, it's

348

:

hard to love your neighbor if you

don't know your neighbor's name.

349

:

Hey, Johnny!

350

:

Oh, your name is Eric.

351

:

Alright!

352

:

Now that's me.

353

:

I mess up people's names all the time.

354

:

At least I tell them, look, I'm gonna

mess up your name at least six times.

355

:

So please forgive me.

356

:

On the seventh time, if I don't

get it, then you can get mad, okay?

357

:

But it's hard to love somebody if

you don't know their name, right?

358

:

But it's so much easier to connect when

you know their name, but what, if you

359

:

know maybe a little bit about them.

360

:

And so if we just decided, you know

what, the way I can turn my, my, my,

361

:

my lifestyle into a living, into a life

for me is let me just first engage,

362

:

let me just say hello and allow that

to slowly but surely be able to grow

363

:

and develop into a relationship.

364

:

And then let me listen, let me

hear the joys, let me hear the

365

:

successes, the triumphs, but let me

also hear your pain, your sorrow.

366

:

And what you're struggling with.

367

:

Because what does that do when you

hear somebody's joy and their pain?

368

:

It draws you closer to them, doesn't it?

369

:

And they are drawn closer to you.

370

:

And we know there's so much going on in

Orange County, we can be a little deceived

371

:

because we have nice homes or apartments,

and we think everybody has it together.

372

:

But until we engage in conversation

and listen, we go, wait, there's

373

:

a lot of deep waters here.

374

:

Just like you have a lot of deep waters.

375

:

And you're grateful for the people

in your life who have listened,

376

:

therefore being the arms and feet and

hands of Jesus by providing supports.

377

:

And that's the third thing you do is

offer support in a very tangible way.

378

:

Hey, here's how I can maybe perhaps

help, but then also as Jesus told them

379

:

to show people that the kingdom of

heaven is near to also offer support

380

:

by pointing people back to Jesus.

381

:

And this applies to us as individuals.

382

:

But this applies to us

collectively as a church.

383

:

We can invite people to do life together.

384

:

We can invite each other

to do life together.

385

:

Helping one another.

386

:

Helping each other's kids.

387

:

Serving in our communities

and our local family groups.

388

:

Loving our neighbors as a goal in itself.

389

:

And in preaching, teaching,

and healing of Jesus.

390

:

All of that will be seen, heard.

391

:

What if we became neighbors like Jesus?

392

:

You know, we want to be

a blessing to Placentia.

393

:

We want to be a blessing

where our family groups live.

394

:

We go all the way from Santa Ana to Brea

to Fullerton, Placentia and everywhere

395

:

in between Anaheim, Anaheim Hills.

396

:

What if us, what if we decided,

you know what, let's just be

397

:

like Jesus in our neighborhood?

398

:

You know, this is the type of church

that I think you want to be a part of.

399

:

This is the type of church I

believe Jesus wants us to be.

400

:

This is the type of church that

the community needs us to be.

401

:

And this is the type of church

that we are going to be.

402

:

And if you're visiting here with us

today, we want to invite you to join

403

:

us to be a blessing to our neighbors,

to be a blessing to our neighborhoods

404

:

so that God can be glorified, our lives

around us can be changed, and people

405

:

can be impacted for all eternity.

406

:

Can I get an amen?

407

:

Brothers and sisters, I'm excited about

what God is doing and what he wants to do.

408

:

And so let's just get real practical here.

409

:

Let me give you some action

steps here for the week here.

410

:

And similar to last week, I want to

give you some questions to reflect upon.

411

:

Maybe you can discuss here as you

get some cone of ice, alright?

412

:

But here's some questions.

413

:

Why has God sent us here?

414

:

What are the possibilities?

415

:

What do you envision or what can you

envision God doing with all of this?

416

:

And then who is God calling

you personally to be?

417

:

And what is God calling you to

do in this new era of ministry?

418

:

Take some time today, tomorrow,

think about it, pray about it,

419

:

reflect, answer these questions,

allow the Holy Spirit to guide you.

420

:

And we'll all be amazed at our

true, living, most high God.

421

:

And like we talked about

last week, it will lead us.

422

:

To praise right now.

423

:

We're going to take communion.

424

:

This is where we remember Jesus death

upon the cross for our salvation.

425

:

And hallelujah for his sacrifice.

426

:

But hallelujah for his resurrection.

427

:

And we take the emblems that

represent his body and blood that

428

:

was sacrificed for our salvation.

429

:

And we see here in this passage, it

says, this is how we know what love is.

430

:

Jesus Christ for us.

431

:

And we ought to lay down our lives

for our brothers and sisters.

432

:

Let's pray.

433

:

Father in heaven, thank you so

much for the example of Jesus.

434

:

God, I'm inspired, I'm encouraged,

I'm challenged, but, but, but I really

435

:

get, I get geeked thinking about all

the things that you want to do in

436

:

my life, in the lives around me, in

our church, in our family groups.

437

:

In our community, even in

my family who maybe doesn't

438

:

have a relationship with you.

439

:

God, it gets me excited to see

the example of Jesus and the

440

:

opportunity to continue that.

441

:

I thank you for that.

442

:

But we thank you that

Jesus modeled this for us.

443

:

Thank you that he was a

neighbor of all neighbors.

444

:

Thank you that he was only

a blessing then, but he is

445

:

a blessing to our lives now.

446

:

Thank you that he lived a sinless life.

447

:

Thank you that he went to the

cross, but thank you that he

448

:

rose from the grave for that.

449

:

We say hallelujah.

450

:

We thank you for our chance to raise up

spiritually from our own life and that

451

:

we can to raise up to a new life and look

forward to eternity in the name of Jesus.
