Nutrition Nugget! Bite-sized bonus episodes offer tips, tricks and approachable science. This week, Jenn is talking about cozy cardio, the viral trend of trading intense workouts for pajama-clad walks, candlelit stretching, and low-key movement paired with your favorite show or drink. It sounds too easy to work, so does swapping intensity for comfort really move the needle on your health, or is it just a trendy excuse to skip the hard stuff? Jenn breaks down the biochemistry behind why gentler movement might do more for your cortisol, consistency, and long-term results than you'd expect. Still, she also flags a few situations where leaning on cozy cardio alone could work against you. Is this the missing piece your routine has been needing, or a trend best kept in moderation? Now, in this week's full episode, which was volume five of [00:00:30] the Next Frontier Files, that episode brought us a reflection on [00:00:35] the expert predictions from year five of Salad with a Side of Fries. And one expert said [00:00:40] cozy cardio as part of her idea of the next frontier in wellness. And in [00:00:45] listening back, it occurred to me there's quite a bit for us to discuss about this trend.
[:Hope Zuckerbrot is a wellness influencer, and I [00:01:25] believe she was the first to talk about this concept of cozy cardio, and she said [00:01:30] for her it was a way to heal her own relationship with exercise, and then it [00:01:35] turned into a form of self-love. And the idea is essentially [00:01:40] to help us enjoy movement. So let's break down what [00:01:45] cozy cardio really means.
lar exercise, the purpose of [:So the trend has us pairing [00:02:25] exercises like walking, jumping jacks, cycling with [00:02:30] cozy settings and clothing or drinks or entertainment. [00:02:35] Now, I'm in the camp that jumping jacks is probably more intense [00:02:40] than walking, so you could do what works for you. I think for me, [00:02:45] if I'm in comfy clothes versus workout clothes, I'm probably gonna opt for the [00:02:50] walking versus the jumping.
s could also qualify or some [:And frankly, [00:03:15] you can do whatever you want and then you can figure [00:03:20] out the element of cozy that works. So maybe it's a lighting thing, a clothing thing, [00:03:25] maybe it's your favorite beverage or what you're listening to or watching [00:03:30] during the activity. So why might we opt for cozy [00:03:35] cardio? Well, on the cardio front, any cardiovascular exercise, especially [00:03:40] though moderate intensity, helps lower blood pressure, improve cholesterol [00:03:45] levels, and increase your heart strength.
What I love about [:It can also help [00:04:15] us dramatically when it comes to stress. So there's an [00:04:20] interesting study from a gym in the UK where they asked more than [00:04:25] 700,000 members of this gym, clearly a huge gym, about their [00:04:30] wellness goals, and over 40% said regaining [00:04:35] calm. And this stood out to me because I feel like we all need that these [00:04:40] days, no matter what phase of life we're in.
Now biochemically, cozy [:So tremendous benefits [00:05:25] there. And then on the metabolic front, cozy cardio supports NEAT, which [00:05:30] is non-exercise activity thermogenesis, which [00:05:35] we see increases from activities like walking and light movement. Now [00:05:40] I believe the critical piece for the benefits is [00:05:45] habit. You've heard me say a million times, consistency is [00:05:50] key to so many of our health efforts, and I think maybe one of the greatest [00:05:55] benefits of cozy cardio is that it can help us find consistency by taking the pressure [00:06:00] off while also adding enjoyment and ease to the movement.
[:Be sure you schedule [00:06:35] it, create reminders, and if you're a longtime listener, you know I love [00:06:40] an appointment in the calendar with an alarm and Post-Its to remind [00:06:45] us. Now one question people ask me about is they'll say, "If we're wearing our comfy [00:06:50] cozies, right, the comfy cozy clothes, at what point are we pushing beyond the cozy [00:06:55] cardio and need to change our clothes?"
To that I say if you are [:If you finish your cozy cardio [00:07:25] sesh and your clothes are damp from sweat, next time change your [00:07:30] clothes. So with all of this, are there any times where cozy [00:07:35] cardio is not a fit or not supporting us? Well, one [00:07:40] thing that pops to mind here for me is Pavlov's dogs, that [00:07:45] if you're exercising in the same clothes that you're sleeping in, notice [00:07:50] if when changing into those clothes at night is triggering [00:07:55] sleep or triggering movement.
If it's [:Resistance [00:08:25] training too is important. So worth mentioning, a complete movement routine [00:08:30] includes cardio, using your heart as a muscle, resistance training to build [00:08:35] strength, right? Muscle dictates metabolism. Muscle is the organ of longevity. [00:08:40] Flexibility so that we have functional muscle, and balance to [00:08:45] help us with our longevity and independent living and a whole host of things later in [00:08:50] life.
