The cannabis beverage industry is booming, with THC-infused drinks projected to reach $5.6 billion in sales by 2035. However, doctors warn of potential side effects like impaired memory and coordination. Recent studies examined the effects of high-potency cannabis use, the efficacy of a CBD:THC extract for pain relief in dogs, and the impact of cannabis use on respiratory health and lung cancer risk.
On today's Cannabis Boomer's Journal of News and Reviews in Cannabis Science, Dr. Alex Terrazas PhD gives his take on the latest findings in cannabis research.
But first. here is The Cannabis Boomer's top cannabis news story.

First up is High potency cannabis flower use is associated with heavier consumption and risk for cannabis use disorder among young adults in California, United States by Dunbar and collageus. This study examined the associations between the frequency and quantity of cannabis flower use with different levels of delta-9-tetrahydrocannabinol (THC) concentration among young adults in California, United States. The findings were: High potency cannabis flower use was associated with heavier consumption and increased risk for cannabis use disorder. This study was a cross-sectional survey of young adults in California. The findings suggest the need for public health interventions to address the potential harms associated with high potency cannabis use. Some methodological challenges are that the study was cross-sectional, limiting causal inferences, and relied on self-reported data, which may be subject to recall bias.
The next article today is Efficacy of a 20:1 CBD:THC cannabis herbal extract for pain and inflammation in dogs following tibial plateau leveling osteotomy by Lyons and others. This study evaluated the efficacy of a 20:1 CBD:THC cannabis herbal extract in reducing pain and improving mobility in dogs undergoing tibial plateau leveling osteotomy for cranial cruciate ligament rupture. That's a complicated term but you can think of this a surgery. The main finding was tha the 20:1 CBD:THC cannabis herbal extract significantly reduced pain and improved mobility in dogs following the surgery compared to placebo. This was a randomized, double-blind, placebo-controlled study in which dogs undergoing surgery were administered either the 20:1 CBD:THC cannabis herbal extract or a placebo. The 20:1 CBD:THC cannabis herbal extract may be a useful adjunct therapy for managing pain and improving mobility in dogs following surgery. The results are interesting but keep in mind that the study had a relatively small sample size and did not assess long-term outcomes or potential adverse effects of the cannabis herbal extract.
Next up: Cannabis use and its impact on respiratory physiology and lung cancer risk: Mechanistic and epidemiological insights (Review) by Georgakopoulou et al. This review article examined the impact of cannabis use on respiratory physiology and lung cancer risk, providing mechanistic and epidemiological insights. This is what I found interesting. Cannabis smoking is associated with respiratory symptoms like cough and wheezing, but the link to lung cancer remains inconclusive; chronic cannabis use can impair alveolar macrophage function and increase susceptibility to respiratory infections. The article summarizes findings from epidemiological studies and discusses potential mechanisms underlying the respiratory effects of cannabis use.The review highlights the need for further research to clarify the respiratory and oncological impacts of cannabis use, particularly in the context of legalization and increased social acceptance. The results are interesting but keep in mind the article notes that epidemiological studies on the link between cannabis use and lung cancer have presented conflicting findings, and more robust research is required to draw definitive conclusions.
